- Well we bought 2 Honda Choppers, the CB750 and the CB450, with little history of the bikes and this is what we found. Whenever we buy older bikes, it seems they are all just neglected and come to us with many issues. Oh well. Another day in the life. Back to Harley Freaking Davidson, American Iron! when it was still American!
Happy 4th of July, and hope everyone celebrates their freedoms across the globe!

Who we are:
Old School Bikes and Old School Ways! Ride hard, wrench a lot, and always having a blast.
Bike camping, wrenching, and shenanigans. My husband and I create motorcycle content for people that are tired of seeing all of the fake insta accounts of sponsored boring yuppies.
Here's some realness, we are just broke bikers living the low life and getting by. I ride a 1985 Ironhead Chopper as my daily, my touring bike is a 1984 FXR. We have lots of Ironheads and FXRs and are constantly building more, trying to keep these old neglected scoots on the road instead of rotting away in a garage.
Appreciate all the love & support

Thanks for watching!! 🇺🇸💚🦅 happy 4th of July! Enjoy your freedom!
I love your enthusiasm Sally it’s contagious lol😁😂
I love that you guy's show your hardships and problems with these bikes.
Appreciate it! This is just our life, real and raw with all the BS and fun! 😁🦅💚🏁
When I had my V Star 650, there were nothing but problems. When I would have it taken in for service, the previous owner(s) had royally screwed it up, and it was pretty much all unfixable. I had to fully replace the bike. Sold it, let them know what had been found wrong with it and bought a Triumph. I learned that having a Triumph is way too expensive to maintain and buy parts for. Nobody in the US had any parts, so they all had to be shipped from UK. Never again...
At least, if I learn to work on a Harley, I can generally fix it myself for a reasonable price.
Thank you for teaching us alongside you.
Ohh thats a good point! Not a lot of triumph parts and swap meets or affordable anything in US!
Happy Independence Day this 4th day of July 2024! It's always kind of a gamble when buying old used bikes. Sometimes you strike gold, sometimes it's all dirt. I know how it goes. All I ride or drive is used. I know there will always something that needs fixing. I always have to put more in it than I hoped I wouldn't have to. But it usually evens out in the end. Sorry you guys are having issues on the new choppers but look at it as learning something new on Japan bikes. Y'all ride and stay safe! Peace!
Definitely a learning experience lol thankfully we still have other bikes to ride, thank youuu and happy belated Independence Day! 🇺🇸🦅
I have a wagoneer and 2 yamaha enduros I am working on. Glad we have the Buell and Harley to ride.
I always tell guys "get the drive train right", and then work on cosmetics. Amazing how many people go the other route. Its always a grind guys ... keep at it!
Absolutely true!! All that pretty stuff dont help the thing go down the road 🤣🤣 thanks!!
@@ironheadsally How true. Thanks
Lol, that's exactly why I buy used bikes as cheap as possible cus when I do, I do it with rebuild in mind. I have 8 running Harleys and three bikes in different stages. The past almost two yrs, I've been wanting to get into building a Honda chopper, 250, 500 just cus I been wanting to for a long time. I'm 60 now so I'm in no hurry but I would like to build a lil chopper for a granddaughter, lol, I hope she'll even ride it cus she has no idea what I'm doing.... Y'all take care n hang in there yea
Hey listen! Build your own Japanese powered chopper! I can see you two riding rigid choppers powered by 1000cc+ sport bike engines!
I just love the look of a Honda 4 in a chopper frame, peanut tank, sensible width tires, minimal fenders and stepped seat. And the sound with open pipes is, dare I say, way more glorious than a potato maker. Happy 4th you's two's. Thanks for the video update.
Damn, can't catch a break huh? I feel your pain...
Have a good 4th and relax around the campfire with a couple beers. Make this a good lesson and learn about all of them. You will be better off in the long run with that knowledge!!!! Keep on truckin'.
Thanks Bruce!!! Happy 4th
Damn man, the beginning of the video, looked like you were panning for gold, I believe you guys will find something good with those 2 bikes.....🍻
Sorry y’all are on the struggle bus right now but things can only get better. At least you have a cool shop to work in. Keep smiling and push through it. Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate it!! Thanks, all the ups and downs of doing this is still better than slaving away for huge bike loan payments 🦅🏁💚😁 its a mess but its our mess LOL
Happy 4th to you guys . Don't let the bikes get you down , it will work out . Enjoy your holiday . also check your clutch before splitting the cases could be your problem .
Thanks James! Yes gonna check the clutch next and try to bump start it and see how she does. The carbs were gummed up from sitting when we got it, so who knows last time anything was checked lol thanks for watching! 😁🦅🏁💚
Been a lot of water under the bridge since those motors were new!! Starting to look like my shed with all those projects🙀. Good move to step away for a day or two👍
Yes, getting away to come back with a fresh perspective is necessary! 💚😁🦅🏁
Your almost speechless.. well i am speechless.. that sucks its hard to know whats really wrong with a bike till you dig in. Just wish you could trust the guy your buying from. Anyways happy 4th and in the end this will give you more content for RUclips
Best motor ever when in doubt evo it out 🤘🤘🤘
I think the clutch is your problem. On the early Hondas the clutch is integral to the kick start. If the clutch slips, the kick cannot turn the engine. Most of the time you will have glazed steel plates in the clutch causing the slip. I would take the steels and cross sand them to rejuvenate the grip. Just subscribed now. Nice to see your work.
Sweet thanks, yes clutch is next to check, try to push start and see what happens, these bikes were neglected like most of em lol! Thanks for watching!! 🏁🦅😁💚
Gotta love it. Listening to some Motley Crue while working on a chopper!
🤘💚🏁🦅😁
for me a big consideration when buying an older bike is parts availability.... a reason why I have 3 shovelheads and got rid of a Moto Guzzi...
Panning for gold.
I would put another filter on and recheck . I have worked on everything built my Panhead from baskets worked at an Indian dealership and yep they all are pains
This is all I do every day. Fix the last owner's lies or " didn't know" problems with the bike
Yup, can definitely get old! lol
Triumph was my first bike when I was 15 , then went to Harley & never looked back . Raised around clubs & the mc lifestyle and in the early 70's , you only seen a few chopped Hondas , but they wasn't treated real good by anyone . Or much liked as far as street bikes go . In my 60's now & still haven't thrown a leg over one ! But you mentioned the tires being low on air ? That's how ya ride a chopper with a hardtail frame . Gives you a little smoother ride & better handling in curves . Stops the bounce , if that makes sense to you
Yeah but 3 psi is pretty damn low LOL i keep my tires aired up in my hardtail ironhead. Thats what i was worried about, these things were beat to all hell! lol! Thanks for watching!
The honda would look cool as shit with a shovel head motor on it
Man oh man. This takes the wind out of my sail of thinking about getting an old 80's to 90's Honda Rebel or any other kind for that matter.
It never fails, just be ready to rebuild the whole damn thing 🤣 even when they say its ready to ride anywhere. Those cracked tires that still have tread say otherwise lol!
Omaha Nebraska for 40 years don't worry about that metal in the oil that metal didn't come from the bearings of the engine that come from the clutches you probably have to put a new clutch in before you drive it because they eat the s*** out of them
I’m so sorry you’re having issues with the newest purchases but also, at least I’m not the only one. 🥴
Any bike older than 20 years that’s got ‘age related marks’ on the outside is gonna have age related marks on the inside too. Bikes seem to be more neglected than a lot of things and the lack of care over time is mind blowing. Also design flaws are not just reserved to one make.
I’m fighting a Honda Super Dream from 1980, I think you called it a Hawk? And a ‘Restored’ Classic Mini. Both were bought as runners and both need pretty major work to move to be useable😢
By old, expect trouble 👿
Gotta say though, I love the springers and wheel on the 750. Can’t say much nice about the 450 so I won’t say anything 😂
Good luck, we’re all right behind you, having the very same issues! 😖🤬😤
Keep practicing your smile 😁😬
Appreciate it thank you so much!!! There’s plenty of us scratching our heads asking “what did they dooo!” LoL the joys of motorcycles. Ride free and happy wrenching!! 😁💚🏁🦅
Sally, the only thing I can say is put the 2 Honda’s on the back burner. Stay of Craig’s List and FB Market Place for a while. Get some of your Harley projects done first. Maybe some Honda engines will become available.
😎Dave H
Dave that is EXACTLY what we planned!! We rode away from town and said, nope, everything can wait behind our road worthy bikes lol!! Thanks!! 💚😁🦅🏁
Funny how you talk to bikes like I do. Don’t piss off your main ride.
LoL! They have personality and attitude just like us! 😁💚🦅🏁 keep ur main happy and she’ll take ya far!
my 1st chop was a 450. On adjusting the valves...... simple way thats as accurate as need be- turn the concentric until you here a tapping /clicking...then back off til it quits and a titch more- thats pretty much spot on and will save you a lot of time and effort.
Sweet, appreciate it Steve! The books makes it sounds wayyy more involved. Thanks for watching!! 😁🦅💚🏁
I did it by book first time... took me half the day.. .. local indy shop taught me that trick.
You guys are fuckin Awesome! Real Deal Bikers that encapsulate the whole energy of Motorcycle Culture. Absolutely love you dudes vibe. God Bless y'all 🎉
Thank you Bobby! Appreciate that!! 🦅😁💚🏁 ride free
Stick to the shovelheads, at least you know what you have then. Also most parts are interchangeable. When you get them sorted they are reliable
Number one!!! Happy 4th kids!!
Wooot! Thanks Charles! Happy 4th!! Ride free
Ouch!! Sorry for the run of bad luck, here's hoping it turns around for you!!
Change the oil and try running that 750. Worst case, engines for both these bikes can be found for next to nothing. Engine swap, way cheaper and less time consuming than rebuilding.. great video. Keep em cheap and fun.
Yeah gonna run it and see, the cam is toasted and discolored like hell. Clearly beat the heck up lol thanks for watching
Liking my EVO more with each episode you guys post. Seems choppers are for people that would rather wrench than ride.
Yeah, I have a SOHC 750 Honda 1976. It’s gone through 3 sets of coils in one year. I’ve stripped out the ignition system only to find that the previous owner fitted DOHC 750 ignition coils ( they’re weaker so burn out on a SOHC)
People! Indeed , it was built by an engineer too. These old Hondas are a bunch of maintenance and heartache , but I love mine - wouldn’t part with it.
Oooof! Always something, no matter what u ride lol!
The 450 clutch is slipping when you are kicking it. The kick start drives the crank thru the clutch. Take the clutch apart and rough up the steel plates on your grinder - will get you going.
I wouldn't take a grinder to any part of the clutch. It could be the fibre plates have had their day, or tired springs.
Engine has been overheated and ran real hard I would say over revved it's hard to say but abused comes to my mind
Happy Independence Day! Glad you found a great engine shop!
Rember the old saying. Trust No One , especially if you’re about to hand them money! Happy 4th of July
Aint that the truth!!! Happy 4th!
Shit girl dont feel bad .i just bought a nice old school 76 ironhead chopper not running .determined to get her back on road .just service ,do carb and breather was upward facing stack. Suprise it had been in rain at sometime and the intake u could see rust stream n flaking .fu....... gotta tear it down . I should took time to look into it further. Damn it sam.haha shes still getn fixed.
Awesome!! Happy wrenching, they are worth saving 🦅🏁😁💚
I've had the best luck with Evo Sportsters. Got an S&S Evo powered custom while chopping my old Sporty and that turned into a money pit. Chasing leaks, toasted tranny, bad stator and so on. 2 years in and it's finally reliable and set up to fit me. I finally feel like I can vibe with the big twin.
Hopefully the Sporty chopper is on the road before anything breaks on the S&S. Lol
you might try changing the clutch cable on the 450. ive saw a 5550 do that very thing. SOHC cb750s are as easy to repair as a harley. do a top end on it and youll love it. i once was called honda troy in the old days. if i had the time and money id get them going, they arnt as bad as you think.
Sweet thanks man
If the 750 Honda motor is in bad shape it will break the bank to rebuild - just for parts. You will be better off locating and buying a running used motor.
That’s why that guy left it with his neighbor so you couldn’t show up and haggle, he knew
Right!! Prick got us
I dunno about metric bikes, but for Harley, you can put a sick into the oil tank and scrape some sludge from the bottom of the tank and read it's whole history. It's like a geological record. Hahaaa
Check the clutches I had 1 do the same thing clutch was slipping
Ohh snap!! Thank u, i’ll check that for sure 💚😁😁😁😁 didnt even think of that
Dachte ich auch bei der 450 er.
The welds ? Well, make weld inspection part of a pre ride check or post ride one a week maybe and I hope you had a good fourth.
Weld inspection before buying a bike? Like scrape away all the paint and see? Not likely
@@ironheadsally pre ride
Ouch...... Old bike.... Always something until you get it dialed in. ...
On the 450 check clutch then adjust valves
Thanks man! Checking clutch next!
God Bless America .
I feel your pain . Went to ride my panhead and developed an intake manifold leak. Now heads are off and waiting on parts. Happy 4th of July. Keep the rubber side down!👍🏻
Oh gotta love it right!! lol happy wrenching and happy 4th! 🦅🇺🇸😁💚
I had Honda’s when I was way younger the main thing you will need is an impact screwdriver. Just like Harley’s swap out the screws with socket head screws.
That's why I gave up on old Hondas back in the 80's. God I hate those soft screw heads.
3:25.... Oops. 😁
09 xl883l still running strong over 20000 not one problem
The joys of choppers😅
Sally I ant no expert but I am 61 yrs old and had Choppers all adult life Triumph and Hondas CB750 like you have and the CB 750 is the Thoughest motor of any kind . Just put you a new filter in and oil and keep going it will take it .
Thats what he’s gonna do with that 750, it “supposedly” ran. Gonna clean up the carbs and see what happens…later. Its harley time now lol!!
If I was in your position, I'd get those hondas running and sell them. If you want to go the Japanese route, I'd look for an XS650 yamaha, they're bullet proof
Kawasaki Z750 twin if you can find one.
Happy 4th of July from over the pond 🇬🇧
Thanks Darren!!! Appreciate ya watching 😁🦅💚🏁
Camping, yes!!!
Amen
Well you know where the metel came from!
"Dealing with people is a pain..." For this reason, I hate buying or selling things to people. A year ago I bought a motorcycle, the seller assured me that everything was fine (I am pretty well versed in technology, but there are some nuances that show themselves only after the start of operation). I asked the seller, "Why did he remove the side cover of the engine?" and he answered me: "I was repairing the starter." I told him: "You could get the starter without removing the side cover..." In general, after buying this motorcycle, I rode for several days and on the way to the sea (far from home), my engine started pounding. As a result, I had to evacuate the motorcycle with a tow truck (naturally it turned out to be expensive for me). It turned out that for some reason this guy climbed under the generator to the overrunning clutch and he did not put the bolts on the "Thread Lock", from which the bolts unscrewed and staged a "Disco" in the engine. In general, I had to make major repairs. And this is only the third part that happened to this motorcycle. The guy was a fraud. I'm sorry if I wrote something wrong (English is my weak point).
Ohhh no! That is so aweful!! And sounds very expensive! Sorry you had to deal with that. The many dangers of buying used bikes from anyone!!
Happy camping on the 4th. I feel your pain. The brown bike I sent a pic of only had 13k on it. Its retired because it's a 77 750A. They say it uses a Civic torque converter. "Where u gonna" find that stuff? As bad as fixing an automatic Beetle. I also a VW trike😢. Great vids.
Oof yeah talk about parts digging!! 🔎👀 thanks for watching!!
Stick with what you know, EVOS' and Ironheads, it will be much easier keeping your parts separated.
Thats where we are at 😁🦅🏁💚 we just wanted some cheapo fun little zippers and that was the universe telling us that evo and iron is where we belong 🤣🤣 thanks for watching
At least on my 65 triumph doesn't need to split the case for anything other then rod bearings. I've rebuilt my Triumph hard tail chopper. Bottom end and top end. All I need to do is put the head back on. I just lost interest in it. I'll get it back together again when I'm in the mood. Girder front end and a new 21" front wheel. I need to put a tension pulley on on the cain to keep it from hitting my new oil tank.
Awesome! Yes it helps to be “in the zone” or in the mood with modding and working on bikes, break up the monotony and make it fun!! 🤩💚🦅🏁 happy wrenching
Wondering if you had put a little bit of oil in the cylinders to help build compression, wondering if it would have then started? Just a thought but yk!
Nice, thanks!!
Hang in there sally. You might want to check your clutch plates before you try splitting cases. Is the electric start still on the 500? If so. Jump it from a battery.
No electric start on either, gonna check clutch and push start it next and see.
I. Would bet that the metal came from top end and valve or cam or chain.
Yeah not sure, the cam is toasted roasted yellow lol! Did another oil change and still lots of metal, maybe bearings exploded, idk it runs for now 😂
Does the kicker use the clutch to turn the motor over? I like the looks of it. I'm glad you found a good machinist. The other bike, Change the oil and run it. Put say 100 miles on it change the oil again to see how much metal is in it. The carbon in 1 cylinder might be a carb. It could be oil, if it is how bad does it smoke?
Yeah we’ll check and see. The cam on the 750 is toasted and discolored, will try to run it and see…after the other projects thats all backburner stuff now lol, im hoping the clutch would be the issue on the 450, next to diagnose lol thanks for watching!!
Check the timing chain , if its aluminum shavings , the T chain could be too loose and hitting the head/cases ... Just something to check ... One thing for sure , Hondas can be owned by idiots too that dont do maintenance .... ... Happy 4th Guys ... Potato Potato ... Out on the road celebrating my independence ... Just me myself and I
Thanks man, we’ll check that! The cams are all toasted and discolored, someone beat the dog shi out of that bike lol. Happy 4th, hope it was a great ride for freedom!!! 😁🦅💚🏁
✌😬
h0w da hell did all dat stripper dust get in dat engine?!?!
🤪
my 750 yad as ntifreeze lookin shit in it
Live and learn, wrench and learn more. They all ran at the beginning now you know why they don't. They rode them till they couldn't then parked them. The facts of life buying old and vintage.
True!!! 💯🏁 bring em back to life like all the forgotten Harleys lo
Damn! Y'all can't catch a break. So much for Honda reliability 😢
Damn.. thar blows. I wonder if it will be as easy to get parts as it is for a Harley..
Try push starting the 450. Its probably slipping clutch. Ride it around for a while and then see if it is easy to kick start. Honda are super reliable but you bought bikes that God only knows how they were neglected and messed with over the years.
Thanks! gonna try that next, be great if it is just the clutch!! 😁🦅🏁💚
Patchem up. Sell em. Trade em.
Thats definitely on the table 🤣 but we are honest and upfront with people when selling, aint gonna paint a turd gold and try to make big money. Thats bad moto-karma lol!!
@@ironheadsally
Of course. Stop the bad juju in its tracks
@@westcoast3595 absolutely!! It aint the bikes fault, gotta reset the JuJu! 😂
My only question is why didn't you try and push start the little Hiroshima Screamer , that would confirm if your assumption on the kickstart cog is right I guess. That 750 is gonna need new bottom end bearings at the least , chances are they flogged that thing with low oil or the oil journals were blocked at some stage , hope ya didn't pay too much for 'em.
Thatll be next is push starting it, need to do a service and the carbs are gummed up too, everytime someone says its “ready to ride”… oh well, add em to the list lol
@@ironheadsally Well 1 things for sure...the rebuild manual is gonna be a bit more trickier than the home maintenance one to negotiate.
But can you get part???????
Sometimes in the translation of early Japanese bike workshop manuals into English they get a little 'confused' and even put the wrong English word in the wrong place etc.... Are you certain that when it says 'split the crankcase' it doesn't just mean take the right hand side cover off the engine ?.. Might be worth a try before you take down the top end and do a full engine teardown?..
Nope i showed the diagram in the video, is splitting cases to get to those gears. But sold it already anyways haha!?
I would own rice anyday bought one harley in my life , yeah a amf 900 sporty. talk about shit stomper. back then it rode nice, until ir didn't. but the 750 and 450 are easy to work on after yea know the tricks. hell I owned the widowmaker for twenty odd years. never left me walking. that harley would go more then a mile from oriy steels shop. hell even nicky nute couldn't fix that pig. but if you keep up the tune then the honda rubs for days. had over 300 grand on it when //i gave up the ghost. yeah an't easy, but riding a mush tail for that long does the body in. I would love too ride another. but those days are done. youth and will, run those dazes and knights willing to treck the miles, and smiles.
bekind rewind ,ya never know what the dazes will bring/ ?
Don't get too disheartened, even if it comes to having to split the cases it's not as big a deal as it sounds. Still more than you wanted to do I know.
Yeah just a project on the backburner now lol add it to the list, cuz its riding time lol cheers!! 🦅🏁💚😁
Entertaining and informative video! BMW airheads are also simple machines and easy to work on like Harleys. If you're not familiar with the term "airhead" its just BMW speak for their air cooled push rod actuated opposed twin engine. I bought a 1986 BMW R80 (which is an "airhead") a few months ago for a cheap but it did need some fixing and cleaning. I posted a walk around video of it on my yt page. Please check it out!
Ohh that cleaned up nice!

Buy a Honda 😂😂😂
Right haha
You find out, before you hand over the money. And if you don't. Point your finger and go stand in front of the mirror. It's not a harley problem or a Honda problem. This is like going to a strip club and marrying the girl with the biggest hooters. But but but it's a chopper and looks really cool man. If you're 15 years old and you've been saving up your hay Hauling money , you get a pass. If you're a grown 🫏 man well... it is what it is
No shit, just like we said in the video we’ll fix whatever it is. Clearly these bikes needed someone to actually care about them.
U guys need to quit buying other peoples worn out junk. Wasted money that could've been used on other things! Those old Hondas are way past their prime.
Yup, we were kicking ourselves for sure.
You two need to stop pretending to be bike mechanics
