When i was 11 years old a guy across the street had a CB 450, and i really thought it was cool. Less that a year later Dad bought me my first Honda Mini bike :)
I would go with an original seat cover to keep it stock. Love the CB450❤ it reminds me of my old CB250K4. I'm still riding 44 years later and currently have a Honda CBF600SA inline four. 🤘
I have a 74 CL450 that I have restored over the last year. I also have a 72 SL350 that I like very much. Hands down, as much as I like the SL350, the 450 is heads and shoulders above it. A much overlooked bike from that era. The old man in me (I'm 66) says to go original on the seat. Love your videos!
Sounds great. If you're going to leave the original paint on the tank I'd keep the seat stock, just get a new cover. If you're going to do a custom paint job on the bike, then a different seat would work. I'd figure out a way to get that dent out of the tank. Seems like you could pop it out from the inside.
My Cb450 K2 had a dent hammered out by cutting a square hole on the inside of the tank and then rewelded. This was before my dad bought it way back in the mid 70s
Had a CB 450 in the seventies. Oil line clogged and hoed a piston. Rebuilt it and sold it As mentioned in the comments it was reluctant to corner, but tires played a role. Definitely nice acceleration for it’s size and vintage.
Ooh, a later model "Black Bomber" CB450! Not seen one of these in a long, long time. Never saw one with a disk brake or that tank shape before, either, so this one must be one of the last of them. What a find, and in great shape too! Fixing that dent will mean respraying the tank and new decals maybe, but it looks simple enough to reproduce. Likely you already made your seat cover choice by now, but if not, go with stock as most of the bike already is. What a beauty, and sounds great too!
I’ve just bought a 1974 CB450, I have sorted through some things myself and your video on your 450 has answered some things I was wondering about. Mine has a bit of hesitation but I’m sorting it out. Thanks for your knowledge.
Thank you!, that was a project of mine as a bigh school boy, back in the 70 ties had the cl 450 with the scrambler exhauststs, didn't like that and got the downswept exhausts, m 27:59 y buddy had same as you with disc front brake, his ran beautifully, we reringed and ground the valves with new gaskets etc, mine never wanted to rev beyond about 5-6000 rpm ,fidlled with the carbs and ignition but to no avail, i eventually thought it must be the torsion bars valve return system, the torsion bars being not as springy as new,i just rode it that way for the year or two i had it and then sold it! It was ok i just couldn't get it into it's powerband which was at around 6000- 8000 rpm ,it got up to about 5500 at that was it, quite disappointing,my buddy died unnaturally and i don't know what his father did with his CB 450 that didn't have the problem , so that was the end of that! I once rode a Yamaha 500 twin and felt the kind of performance that size of parralel twin could make! If you have any thoughts on it i would appreciate some feedback!
@@BrickHouseBuilds Eyy, heck yeah! Love that you're sending these machines appreciation too. I loved the tank shape of the 500T. Plus, the oddly cool brown color with that factory diamond stitched seat got me.
Back in 80s a mate of mine had a CB250 Man that thing was Fast the 450 looks fantastic considering it's age the weirdest thing about buy old style bikes is the rim sizes with a nice set of 17" rims laced onto those hubs and maybe triple discs and some 4 spot calipers that bike would be ready to take on many of our modern day 450 & 650 twin counterparts. It was great hearing it come to life when you got the other carb working no rebuild 😅😁 classic Great video really enjoyed watching cheers mate
I always wanted a CB450 of that vintage, never found one, but had an '81 CM400t and an '84 CM450e, loved them both, but they weren't a CB. Thanks for putting out these videos!
My bike! Hurts to see these. Passed on a marketplace one last year because of too many projects. Bought mine with a few thousand on it and rode 64 miles to work and back for several years in decent weather. Sold in 1980 for some stupid reason. My favorite, thanks for the video.
Make sure the chain, wiring harness, brake lines /pads, wheel bearings, steering head bearings, tires, clutch/throttle cables, valves are adjusted and RIDE IT. The bike has beautiful lines. RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
Definitely go custom with the seat. The tank and side covers are such gorgeous colors that the black seat is an eyesore. Matching the seat color to the side covers and match the stitching to the gold on the tank... Subtlety beautiful (IMHO).
That bike is super fun! One of the first CB's I customized. Mine had a '75 CB500T motor with a '71 CB450 frame. First built a cafe racer then I turned it into a brat. That was funny watching you cruise around with a nurse tank on it! lol
A shop mate of mine bought one of these in the crate. He left everything but the engine and frame in the crate and built a cafe racer out of it. Put an old "Rickman" tail on it and a "Malcolm Smith" tank with a set of straight pipes. The thing was epic... you could hear it from orbit! Great vid as usual. You could name it after my late mates cafe..... "The Bouncer" Thank you for the mem's!
I saw the post on IG about losing all the files, thats tough but the video is still great even without it! that 450 absolutely wasnt done being on the road!
My first bike was a 1970 CB 450 w/ front disc brake. Purchased at Anderson Sales in Pontiac MI. Had no trouble keeping up with friends 650 BSA Lightning. Sold it after 3 years to purchase a new Iron Head Sportster.
My first “big bike” was one of these in 1970 I think, hmm maybe 71, although it was a CL which wasn’t different than a CB except for the pipes and bars, and it would run down a 650 Bonneville. Wonderful. But, honestly, old Hondas steered like dump trucks. I loved that bike and was happily unaware of the steering being something that might be improved. DOHC hoo yah.
If I was buying that bike I would wince at any custom work. It'll sell much quicker as close to stock as possible. And great work by the way. What a score!
my first street bike was a 450- that brings back memories. I painted it black with light blue trim on tank and seat, put on TT pipes and terrorized the neighbors lol. Can't say it ever let me down and never had to mess with much which was a good thing as I had limited knowledge at the time.
A mechanic friend of mine had good luck removing dents from his gas tank by first cleaning the inside, but then filling it with water and freezing it... nice job on the bike!
good vid despite the missing footage; would retain the original seat cover but then add a little stitching to match tank stripe. enjoyed the free spirit riding with the 'pup' gas tank :)
I put 30,000 miles on one of these back in the day. It would run effortlessly at 7000 rpm all day which was 85 mph plus. They were an expensively overbuilt engine.
I love an original looking cb but if you could make a custom seat cover that is removable so you can always go back to a factory look, then by all means go for something unique maybe period mod? Great job, if you do the seat up I think the tank too deserves some work as well, but it's on it's way to become a great little bike again. All the best. Colin.
i knew the instant I saw that impact driver that someone would bring up JIS bits...😊 Stock seat So few originals left because people customized them over the years.
Love it but it does need a seat re-do and maybe take the dent out of the tank. So, just a suggestion: pull the dark brown into the piping and the strap as subtle accents. The black seat body balances the black tires. So, that modest change may be in the ballpark of intent. Subtle tends to be elegant for me. It has great character for sure.
Clean up the tank (leave original paint/patina) and do a basic seat cover replacement. What ever you do dont fix the cracked gauge paint! I have the same exact bike...Orange sparkle tank...such a great motorcycle!!!
Hi BJ original on the seat sounds right but defo wouldn’t look out of place with a change to match the tank actually I think it would look pretty sweet to be honest , cool looking bike man and very clean for the time it sat also like the look on the dials with age gives it character take care and ride safe guys all the best 👍👌🏍️🏍️🏍️🔧🔧🔧❤️
I would keep the shape of the seat the same so it looks factory, change the cover to original looks BUT use some very suttle customisation with the stitching. If I were buying one of these I would prefer it to be as near original as possible and not customised .
Yeah, and still keep the patina.

Same here!

It is still an adequate bike for most things. Today’s motorcycles are just monsters.
Original seat, different pipes. Thanks for the great content.
Agreed. Those pipes sound pretty rough...at least on the video.

I've already had the tank at a PDR guy and unfortunately it's too creased to push or pull out

Id love to get the dent out but as we have tried that already it would take more substantial bodywork which is unfortunate
