Just got my Pelican 30 quart cooler today Held my breath when I came across this video cooler not working out Whew !! joust the size Happy with what I got Just the right size Awesome
Loved your 1st one too, that’s why I bought the 50qt‼️It’s big but does it do the job! Once a week buying ice on long trips, plenty of drinks and food no problem. Fortunately I’ve got a bit more room in my van. Love my Pelican ‼️😎
OMG. I have spent so much money on things I don't need. Just because all the van dweller vids said you just have to have these things. Have had my solar getup for 2 years and haven't used it yet. A big fan, too big and it is 18 volt. Not good. Portable shower, that I might keep. But I don't know how much money I have invested in this lifestyle, that ends up being given or sold to someone else. When you are a city style van dweller, fast food is a norm. BUT that is about to change. I am now starting to cook. Yikes! But 7-8.00 for fast-food crap meal. Not good. My ice is lasting maybe a day and a half. But that's ok for now. Well I have rambled on enough. Stay freely my friend.
An electric compressor cooler/freezer from Dometic Whynter Engel etc works awesome and would require battery and solar to maintain it. Doesn't require much though
That's exactly why you live in it first and figure it out as you go, like you've always said. Gets ya in the VanLife sooner and saves $$! Nothing wrong with that! 😚😎🐶🚐
I'm a huge fan of your videos and van build .. I'm getting my van in a month and converting it for van life in Florida .. I seen the video where you installed your side decorative plywood and I just love it so much that I am buying the same type and using it in my van as I love love love the colors .. you also bought a bunch of stuff from IKEA like your shelfs and storage .. so you inspired me to shop at lowes and Ikea for all my van build .. I'm also gonna try and install the isolator for my house batteries since I'll have 2 of them with an inverter .. I am so excited.. hopefully I find a electric cooler/fridge that is easy to install and use less power.. thank you for doing everything your doing and I hope to meet you one day ..
Chrome, i am so glad that you continue to keep it simple. Before i began watching your channel i was always telling myself, "i cant do this becuase of that," or "i need solar because i want this." Now, instead of doing that i ask myself, " if i want to have this in a van what is the simple solution?" Crazy thing is, i always find one!
I love your sincerity in wanting to help us with all the basic things to consider for van life and for sharing your honest opinion about the products you use. Thank you so much for that.
Suggestions for saving space...what if you took your greens out of those plastic containers and just put them in big freezer bags .... and for your bacon fix, for omlettes and things, buy the REAL bacon bits, in grocery stores where the salad dressings are. You fry some of these up and put them in your eggs, you won't notice the difference from real bacon.
Hey, Chrome. When my van build was finished last month, the first thing I did was buy a 30 quart Pelican cooler. The reason I chose Pelican--your videos! Thanks for the advice. The 30Q is great. Hopefully, Pelican will send you the cooler given the adverts you have given them. And, hopefully, they include the wire rack with the cooler--a must have. Take it easy, I will be hitting the road soon and will try to come by your way.
Avon Skin So Soft.....That is the BEST thing to keep bugs away especially mosquitoes. I saw coolers at Wal-Mart that hold ice for 10 days for much cheaper. :) The Wally World one was about $75 USD.
Good morning Chrome and disco I got a life hack for your eggs take an empty water bottle crack your eggs put them in the water bottle put the top back on it and put them in your coolant then just pour out the amount of eggs you want to cook no eggshells no carton life hacks really work man love you guys from South Carolina
you should get a 12 volt 1 cubic foot freezer only... that way you can make your own ice and use power only when you need to make ice that way you get to keep the cooler you have. there around $180 but with ice being 2-3$ per block it would take 5-6months to pay its self off before making money (not including the gas money used to drive to pick up ice)
Great video, really enjoyed waking up with you ( 3 hours later in the morning though ) 😊 the lyrics to the music you chose where so goodl and went perfectly with your video! And your practical advice is priceless!
I’ve watched a lot of van life videos and your set up is the most simplistic, functional, and aesthetically pleasing that I’ve seen. Very cool! I love the bond you and Disco have. Bull Dogs remind me of Edward G. Robinson lol
Oh good grief my son looks just like that when he emerges from his room first thing in the morning too haha. You know you dont need to put eggs in a cooler don't you? We never do at home and haven't for years. Also onions ,carrpts ,spuds dont need a fridge. Could you make a reflectix cover for the outside of the cooler? Mine is made of polystyrene about 2 inches thick and lined inside and out with reflectix which is really not very space hogging. You could even make a cushion for the top so it is a seat too and that would help its insulative properties.
You should invest in a Frigid Rigid cooler. The smallest one will hold ice about 4-5 days, with significant melting by day 4. However, they are very pricey; you're going to pay well over $500 - $600 (over $1000 for their HUGE and solar ones) when all is said and done (including s&h). I've got the smallest one and if you keep things that don't need deep freezing (leftover pizza, sandwiches, bottled water, sodas, cheese (no mayo!) you should be okay. Be prepared to buy a full bag of ice once or possibly twice a week. See their website and their cooler comparison tests on RUclips. You rock, my friend! I wish I could do what you do!
Good morning from Long Island , NY. Invest in the dometic CFX 28, I put it in my conversion. It’s the right size and always on. Draws very little in power. Keeps the beer. COLDDDDD
unwashed farm fresh eggs will lasts a couple weeks if you wash them it takes away the protective coating that keep germs out .. as always enjoyed … be safe out there n have a ball doing it !
Watch the RUclips video on how to prep your pelican cooler! I had the same issue until I prepped the cooler. Ice latest twice as long! You should get at least 4-5days on hot conditions. Hope this helps.
The frig on my houseboat died and cooler life sucked for me. Mine was only $50 but I bought a double college size frig for $100. Couldn’t see spending that in a cooler. But ice every other day when Covid started was killing me. Good to know the small pelican is just good for fishing trips and stuff.
Bought the smallest dometic frig or freezer adjustable used on Craigslist for $100 US and it's awesome, they retail for around $360 on the low end, Walmart. The size is small but for one it's perfect, but the whole power thing applies. The inside build looks sweet btw.
You don't have to keep the eggs in the cooler. At least organic freshly laid eggs that were not washed. Unwashed eggs can be kept unrefrigerated for few months at least. In a way, a lot of food does not have to put in the fridge. Lettuce, veggies, fruits, butter, eggs, condiments, pickled stuff, olives, and so on. The only thing that should be kept in a fridge is raw meat. Have you ever thought of buying a Goal Zero Yeti charger with a small fridge? With the Yeti, you don't have to use solar panels but can be recharged via a wall outlet or even the car when its running. I like your simplicity. Using and buying things that are only necessary but not needed. Keep the videos coming.
I have the 70 and it holds ice for 7 days easily. You have to have minimum 50/ 50. 50 ice and 50 food. You can’t have more food then ice or the ice will melt quickly trying to cool those items.
Just keep that cooler dude ..... just get another cheeper cooler to keep other food or beer .. you can always move it anywhere in the van .. it can be a small cooler just to keep a few more things ... and that way the pelican you have you can still take to the beach without having a giant cooler.... 2 coolers best way ....
I agree...2 coolers! I have Pelican 20 and luv it. I can’t pick up/move the bigger coolers. And Pelicans snap locks are easy to operate if you have arthritis (compared to Yeti-like pulls locks that are rubber and can take 2 hands to open/close).
Keep it simple until the need arises to do something else. Do what is best for you and what you need not what others tell you, you need. Cheers Chrome and Disco.
I have a 20 qt and a 30qt, my 30 qt is the best cooler I’ve own, but my 20qt is a great contender! It does it’s job well, it’s a taller cooler compared to most 20 qts on the market but…. But the reason I bought the 20 qt because it’s tall enough to hold a 1/5 if Jameson whiskey and a bottle of my dew plus plenty of ice to drink with and keep the contents cold
Derby reach is 5 minutes from my house!!! There is a really great campground there along the river that is popular all summer, especially during salmon runs! Awesome video!
I bought a 30 quart pelican cooler, based on what I've heard & read. My 30 qt gets a new bag of ice every 3-4 days. On the 4th day it's 90% water. I'm pretty disappointed in it considering I'd read that it held ice much better than 3-4 days.
There are so many variables when dealing with coolers. I have the exact same Pelican cooler, same colour even...mine will hold ice for 4-5 days, easy. No point in bashing a company and their cooler before considering how you use it...
As a suggestion buy a cooler that utilizes 9 volt power (cigarette lighter plug). I used one for 38 years before I retired from the trucking industry. No buying ice, no soggy food inside of the cooler, uses very little power from the battery, and, you can buy the ones that heat as well as cool. They're not that expensive. Buying ice for coolers, in MY opinioon, is only good for one reason: cooling beer the right way---with ICE. Anyway, that's my two cents for whatever it's worth! Love the vids, Man! Travel and stay happy, love God, and, stay wierd! Adios! (7/7/2018 Saturday 10:56pmCST Houston, Texas, USA)
eggs dont need cooling, they will last ok for days, well maybe weeks...geography/heat maybe plays a part but ours just sit on the counter edit: ok so maybe American eggs need chilling. seems our European dont, in our stores they are not in the chilled sections with other meat / dairy there on the baking isle with the floor at store temperature...
American eggs are required to be washed before being sold to customers. Washing them damages a protective barrier, and that's why they need to be kept cold.
Eggs here in Sweden are also usually washed when you buy them from a store rather than straight from the farm. Still do not require refridgeration. So I think you're being told porkies from the folks wanting you to buy larger refridgerators. :P Washed eggs - keeps in roomtemperatures for a few weeks. But several months if kept refridgerated. So they sometimes recommend refridgeration, but don't require it. And, I mean, seriously. In a van, you buy the small 6 pack you're going to consume in the next few days to a week, rather than a big box to keep you in eggs until xmas, for space reasons anyhow.
If you coat Vinegar oil over eggs it will help keep them shelf stable much longer provided a cool dry place to store them. There are also a lot of shelf stable foods that can make some excellent meals since you're cooking at home more.
Buy a 100us $ Coleman or Igloo cooler that you plug into the cigarette lighter you never need ice and it keeps everything inside of it 20 degrees colder than the outside Ambient Air Temperature around the cooler and what I do is I point my air vents in my big rig right at the heat exchange on it and I can freeze stuff in it, they are rather portable but they don't have wheels. But I understand not wanting to have something plugged In most the time.
Moon Dancer yes you can unplug it when you stop but if you have the space might I suggest adding an additional battery which should allow you to keep it plugged in while you are parked but keep in mind you cannot use ice in the plug-in coolers
Update: Checkout the Pelikan 45 qt wheeled supreme cooler-built more vertical and up to 10 days keeping ice. It has both wheels and a handle that extends out the side. High rated. (See Amazon.com write up on it). Price on Amazon = $379.99, but worth it. Chrome, check out the Yeti Bucket 45 qt. cooler-it is more vertical & keeps ice better. Drain plug is quick & easy too. Takes up much less space because it is vertical. $199. is usually the price you can get one for. But, you have to buy the lid for it, an additional $49.95!Sometimes you can find them for sale after a group has a party. Portability is okay, but, not the absolute greatest and they’re only good for 3 days on ice. Best wishes to ya & Disco.
Hi Chrome! Take a look at the Suaoki 400w solar “generator” (lithium battery) on Amz.com. Great product and cheaper than goal zero. Watch for sale/coupon which happens often. You can charge when you’re driving or if you’re in a spot that has an outlet (or solar panel). It has other features as well... usb, ac , jump your battery. Pair it with 12v cooler/fridge. I will be pairing with 110 v bar fridge bc thats what came in my vintage trailer. You are full timing it and need a proper “home”...just like the wave 3 was the proper heating unit for your home. Cooking nutritious meals for yourself is crucial. Fast food is way too $$ in Canada and provides poor nutrition.
I was just looking at a 26 liter black cooler on Ebay. It's about $85. It stands upright and has a handle. It measures 16" x 13" x 17". If you'd like to search for it, use " Portable 26L Travel Car Electric Cooler Mini Fridge Food Warmer Camping Black US". For energy, the images show AC, DC and USB ports. I'm sure ice can also be used.
If it's that cheap it's only a peltier type. It can only cool 40deg below ambient temps(too warm like 90deg means 50deg) Look at the compressor cooler/freezer from Dometic Whynter Engel ARB etc they can run as a freezer too so you can swap frozen jugs into a regular cooler if need be. But they are expensive, apparently Trucker Fridge and Ideal b have cheaper prices.
Chrome, look into the Ozark Trail High Performance Coolers at Walmart. I've got the 26qt & 52qt and both are amazing. They're also much cheaper than the Yeti, Pelican, etc.
Yeti 35 349 or 45 399 at brasspro at tawassen cheaper then amazon. A second battery and a battery isolator then you drive it charges aimple cheaper cost is 100 for the battery isolator and what ever the battery is some zero gage wire and a fuse. You can mount the battery under the hood or under the van like an rv.
Get back a 30qt and put under bed. Or sort drawers and knock a block out just a frame to slide a 30qt into. Or roll with the 20qt and just put some grass fed beef in there, few cans of sloppy joe mix slide them under the bed. Then maybe some frozen broccoli for some greens but that takes return to a store but remember frozen veggies are perfect in a cooler. Cause already frozen. Shit I use to throw the beef into the ixecream section of the store so it'd be actually frozen by the time I was done shopping. Or chicken tends to be frozen. Just some adaptations bro 👍 you could grill your beef and use organic whole wheat bread for a sloppy joe like none other.
Even on their website, it says 2 days ice retention. It has less than an inch of insulation. That’s why I jumped up to the 30 quart. Has the thickest insulation of their coolers at 2.1 inches.
I'm in a class c, so pretty spoiled with the fridge, but I am considering buying a cooler to store more food. I don't want to trip over the dann thing though. I already have a big dog for that:)
I have the same cooler, ice retention 3 days easy in the sun. My bigger pelican keeps ice for 7 days. Maybe you got a dud but there is no way a cheap walmart cooler compares to this.
Another fantastic vanlife update. By the way, you should not refrigerate eggs.... leave them out of the cooler, and rather store them inside one of your drawers... R200 dollars is a huge price tag for a cooler box.... I hope Pelican will step up and send you one in exchange for a review...wouldn’t that be great? Hugs to u both.
100W solar panel 100Ah LiFePO4 battery 12V / 0.75 Ah/h Dometic fridge You can run that thing 24/7/365 or if you don't want a solar panel, just connect the external battery to the van's alternator with a battery isolator and it should charge it while the engine is running. 100Ah LiFePO4 battery fully charge should run the 12V / 0.75 Ah/h fridge for 130 hours!
I have a cooler that i CAN plug in or just use ice, multipurpose is something i like to look for. I have the mobicool that heats or cools with power cord for in the van or in the house. ..."see my old video, july reno"....i have to make a new video but thats the cooler i swear by. Ive seen people use insulation around them to keep them cold longer and use salt with the ice to last longer. Do some research...lots of cool stuff. Im gonna go make some eggs now...lmao
You don’t have to keep eggs in the fridge they keep fine out of it ... how long depends a bit on the weather but I’ve never had a problem at home and we don’t store them in the fridge. Disco is so cute! Do you find when you travel to parks/nature areas with water there are restrictions or bans on dogs Any so you have to choose elsewhere? In Oregon where I am at at least near Portland I’ve found a lot of parks especially with water that van dogs :-(
The cooler Exchange is probably not going to happen because you're not using it right. On the directions it says they're pre-cooler before you use it there's no way you're doing that I was in the band on the road. Just the opposite like when you use the thermos for something hot you put hot water in it while you getting the product ready to go in the thermos.
👍Disco waking up and climbing into the front seat...sooooo cute!!🐶🐾🐾💞
Just got my Pelican 30 quart cooler today Held my breath when I came across this video cooler not working out Whew !! joust the size Happy with what I got Just the right size Awesome
Loved your 1st one too, that’s why I bought the 50qt‼️It’s big but does it do the job! Once a week buying ice on long trips, plenty of drinks and food no problem. Fortunately I’ve got a bit more room in my van. Love my Pelican ‼️😎
Are Pelican cooler's similar to Yeti coolers?
iam going back and watching ur first few years , youve come so far , ! you have changed as a person!
OMG. I have spent so much money on things I don't need. Just because all the van dweller vids said you just have to have these things. Have had my solar getup for 2 years and haven't used it yet. Chrome ! ! Great video again ! Nice balance of your crazy self.... Disco ....and the beautiful place you are at. My daily delight.
Chrome, i am so glad that you continue to keep it simple. Before i began watching your channel i was always telling myself, "i cant do this becuase of that," or "i need solar because i want this." Man I bet you was a heck of a DJ the jams you be playing be working....!
I love your sincerity in wanting to help us with all the basic things to consider for van life and for sharing your honest opinion about the products you use. Thank you so much for that.
Awesome fog shots at the beginning. 👍
I have to say I am loving watching all your videos and see all the changes you went through in your van to the awesome one you have now

It's nice getting up early starting the day with the birds and experience of nature slowly waking up......Love it
Hey, Chrome.
Love your videos Chrome and Disco. It's a daily staple now lol. You have a presence/personality somewhat like Guy Fieri ! Keep up the good work bro.
Thank you for the advise
Good morning Chrome and disco I got a life hack for your eggs take an empty water bottle crack your eggs put them in the water bottle put the top back on it and put them in your coolant then just pour out the amount of eggs you want to cook no eggshells no carton life hacks really work man love you guys from South Carolina
DEE CRAVEN Yep
DEE CRAVEN or just go to grocery store that already has cracked eggs mixture in a cart jug
Where can I buy a food grade funnel to do that?
@@livefreeordie4850 napa
@@livefreeordie4850 probably a canning funnel might be large enough. Bring your bottle or jar to measure.
I’m happy to here that you are wanting to cook meal!!! Awesome!!!👠🚌👠

U can give him a box, some yarn and a toothpick and he tell who how 5 stars awesome it is for van life 😂😂😂
If you buy unwashed farm fresh eggs they will last unrefrigerated for weeks. Eggs come out of the chicken with a Special coating to preserve it.
I’ve watched a lot of van life videos and your set up is the most simplistic, functional, and aesthetically pleasing that I’ve seen. Very cool!
I love the bond you and Disco have. Bull Dogs remind me of Edward G. Robinson lol
Caravan Carolyn just copied your floor plan. Check out her new video!
I grew up next to train tracks and I find the sound soothing also.

Onions Don't need to be refrigerated but if you have a problem with the cutting onions and crying keeping them in a cool environment helps.
Lovein on that dang dog

Interesting to see how your outlook has changed as I am watching this in August 2020.
trains are cool and relaxing love disco
Keep it simple until the need arises to do something else. Do what is best for you and what you need not what others tell you, you need. Cheers Chrome and Disco.
Your gonna go for a larger cooler. None of the 20 ish quarts hold for more than 2-3 days. Doesn’t matter the brand.

eggs dont need cooling, they will last ok for days, well maybe weeks...geography/heat maybe plays a part but ours just sit on the counter
edit: ok so maybe American eggs need chilling. seems our European dont, in our stores they are not in the chilled sections with other meat / dairy there on the baking isle with the floor at store temperature...
Project 806 Camper If the eggs are farm fresh and not washed they'll last for weeks on a counter.
Washed eggs - keeps in roomtemperatures for a few weeks.
Blah 0o yes. To both questions. Yes We are serious. And yes You've been missled. Lied to, if you wish.
@@dianadeejarvis7074 Apparently rubbing an oil on the eggs will help them keep for months
Thanks nice info .

Have you looked into the small camper/RV refrigerator?
Great vid! So informative! T4S!! 💖🚐🎞👍🏻 💟☮️🌿🌳🐶🌸
Disco is one funny character.
I lived on a boat for many years, you need to understand the things that do not need a frig, like eggs.
In the U.K. we don’t keep eggs 🥚 in the fridge and have no problems , if that helps you have a decent breakfast 🍳
helpful vid, thanks. try lemon juice instead of vinegar. that's what I always use for my counter cleaner
Good advice👍
I've been wondering about this 'cooler' issue for awhile, I usually only eat meat and veggies, I like beer too though; awesome insight bro!
They have coolers you can plug in and remove if needed. Also the GoZero is a small portable battery you can charge anywhere.
Thanks for the update. I had been wondering how you were liking your first Pelican cooler.
You could get some small solar panels and put them in the back windows since you don't use them, but I'm pretty sure somebody already suggested that.
That size/location would not produce much power.
VANCITY VANLIFE yeah, my 45 quart rtic is too big for just me. Good for a weekend trip.
I'm in a class c, so pretty spoiled with the fridge, but I am considering buying a cooler to store more food. I don't want to trip over the dann thing though. I already have a big dog for that:)
Have you ever tried camper or emergency foods that you just add water? Some of them are not to bad.
Go ahead and wreck the shot. Mosquitos are from the devil! Lol
vivian Kimberlin Yep
Just a suggestion but see if salad and greens come in bags instead of that plastic box. They take up way less space.
The 20 quarts universally hold ice for less than 4 days.
I have the same cooler, ice retention 3 days easy in the sun. My bigger pelican keeps ice for 7 days. Maybe you got a dud but there is no way a cheap walmart cooler compares to this.
Not the fault of the cooler. You'll find use for that size when you start beach camping.
Raise that bed up so you have enough room for a slide out cooler for food
Disco is so gorgeous!!! I swear he thinks he's human. Shhhhhhh!!!
100W solar panel
100Ah LiFePO4 battery
12V / 0.75 Ah/h Dometic fridge
You can run that thing 24/7/365
or
if you don't want a solar panel, just connect the external battery to the van's alternator
with a battery isolator and it should charge it while the engine is running.
100Ah LiFePO4 battery fully charge should run the 12V / 0.75 Ah/h fridge for 130 hours!
Except the battery is $1000
It’s a little expensive but the goal zero yeti is pretty awesome
In Oregon where I am at at least near Portland I’ve found a lot of parks especially with water that van dogs :-(
Rtic makes some pretty nice coolers and the prices aren’t to out of this world. Specially if you catch one of their sales.
Do you understand that you are supposed to have a 2:1 ice ratio?
The cooler Exchange is probably not going to happen because you're not using it right. On the directions it says they're pre-cooler before you use it there's no way you're doing that I was in the band on the road.
Just the opposite like when you use the thermos for something hot you put hot water in it while you getting the product ready to go in the thermos.
You only have to refrigerate eggs for long time storage 2 or 3 days without refrigeration no problem
