I had given up the idea of trying to learn to quilt, but this has inspired me, and I think I can do it. So many tutorials make it seem like everything has to be SO exact. For newbies, this just needs to be fun and comprehensible. I wanted to make a twin size quilt right off the bat. A lot of tutorials talk about blocks, but never talk about how hard it is to actually put a bed-size quilt together!! It's OK just to make smaller items! I owe you a lot!
You can do it! It is SO RIGHT to start small!! That way you don't get discouraged, learn Something, can practice and take your time, not spend a ton of money and at the end of the day, receive satisfaction ~ even it's not a 'job well done', you FINISHED it!! YAY!! And Strive for Progress, Not Perfection!!! :) All the best!! Remember. Make a coaster!! Then a mug rug. Then a Placemat!!! ............and so on!! :)LOL!
Marvelous adaptation! Your idea expands Susan's 5-10 minute quilt with lots of enhancement ideas for a beautiful and complicated looking quilt. Thanks for your time and sharing your ideas. Just love quilters because sharing is as important as the work making a quilt.
Oh Jean you are an angel. You replied "straightaway" unlike many others. I'm glad you figured it out. Hope the other viewers will read your explanation, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH. xx
I'm a 71 year old apparel seamstress who is brand new to quilting, so imagine my astonishment at this seemingly miraculous 3 seam block construction. What an exciting project this is going to be! I've been planning my first queen size quilt and really wanted to incorporate some curved seams into it but figured that would be too difficult. Not anymore! Thank you very much for this 2 part video that explains the construction so well.
I'm very new to quilting but can't wait to try this. I have watched Suzanne's video but like the variations and tips on removing the bulk. The fussy cut in the middle of the bridge block has so many possibilities. I have so many ideas after watching your video. Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome Crystal! This is my go-to easy and fast quilt for gifts and presents! :) I have made over a dozen, in all sizes and various fabric choices! They all made up pretty and different;)
Jean, thanks for a great tutorial. I came back from Episode 60 to watch this and am so grateful because I am now going to do the jelly roll quilt you modelled there for my 7 year old son. I loved your commentary, your passion and your sense of fun - thanks. IMPORTANTLY, I learned so much :D. Great work!
Oooops I forgot to say, tell Elliott he is doing a fantastic job of videoing. I like how he comes in and does the closeups. Maybe there is a career there??? Thank you, Elliott. You are a gem!!
It's just ME doing all of the filming, like I said! Eliot and Maxwell DID start filming me in the beginning, but got fed up with it and got me a tripod!! So its' just me!! :)
Jean, I just recently discovered your wonderful channel, and I love your work. You are an amazing instructor. I am a newbie quilter. Thank you so much for sharing so many wonderful quilting ideas and techniques with us.❤
Ah, thanks so much for finding me and taking time to watch! I do go on and on a bit, but as I say, I always get there in the end:) And some of my first videos...well...lets just say I do a BIT better now!! LOL! LOL!
@@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory No worries about going on and on. Doesn't bother me a bit! LOL! I'm gaining so much helpful info and appreciate it so much.
I think I lost my comment,so I will redo it again. I haven't been sewing for quite sometime but have always been looking for a project that would make me happy to sew again. I have been watching your videos and have been enjoying them so much. But, today while watching this 10 minute quilt square that looks as though it has a cathedral window in it, I was hooked!!!!! Thank you for bringing back the excitement and spark for sewing that I once had!!!!!?
I'm so thrilled about that ~ truly!! This craft should be fun and enjoyable and something to look forward to! This particular block works up so quickly AND magically!!! :) All the best and remember to start slow and steady ~ that wins the race!! Thanks for tuning in! :)
I loved your Basic beginner free motion quilting video, I had to watch more. This video was numbered next to that one and I am so happy I watched it!! Amazing!! You make it sound and look fun and easy. I think I will have to squeeze it in next instead of adding to bottom of my list. Thank you so much. Happy quilting!!💕
That was awesome......please don't stop making videos. I have an Dream machine and glad to find someone who is also using Brother. You did a fantastic job.
Hi Jean. I know this comment is way in the future of this video but I just want to tell you that I've enjoyed your most recent videos (late 2018) so much I've decided to go back to the beginning. I've started with EPISODE 1 and I'll work my way along, like binge watching!! LOL Who can help learning something new with any one of your tutorials, not to mention you are an absolute hoot. You're so funny, it's like watching a "feel good" movie. Thank you, thank you again. You take care and I'm sure I'll be chatting with you again soon. Can't keep a good talker down!! (me, I mean!) LOLOL
Oh dear....my first videos! My son, Dominic, came in and said "what are you doing mom?"....and started videoing me....aaarrrggghh! I was hideously uncomfortable in my messy sewing room! :) But now I do all of my videoing myself...just me, my camera and my tripod! :)
This is why I love you! Your quilts have a lot of life. I belong to a FB quilt group and was told my border is too busy. I ask should I rip a seam, not how my fabric coordination looks! I like a whole array of colors, not just 2 or 3! Love this, its beautiful!
Oh no! Quilt Police at their worst! Whatever colors, patterns, or skills we bring to the table should be commended, encouraged and, if necessary, critiqued kindly with the view to betterment, but NEVER TO BE PERSONALLY CRITICIZED!!! You'll never get that from us! We love quilts, whatever, however, whenever and by whomever just love to create~! :)
Taking out the middle is great. I also happened upon the notion of using four of the blocks with a fifth same size piece, but I like your color combinations. Your scalloped version is almost unrecognizable as having used this technique. It is truly "Mod". Your love of quilting and dedication to the art is evident. Great video. Thumbs up!
Thanks; watched episode 11 at around 10mins it showed exactly what was puzzling me. At first i thought you just sewed on the big white square on top which i guess you can do too.
Thanks for sharing, I've seen Suzanne McNeil's You Tube video and even brought the book. I love how you've added and extra dimension to this block I will certainly give this a go. I thought I had a lot of fabric but after seeing your studio, I am an amature. My family are no longer allowed to complain about how much fabric I have. LOL. Oh and brilliant eliminating all that extra bulk in the centre, I'm a long arm quilter and it's so much easier when there aren't multiple layers of fabric to stich over.
You are explaining so good with great details especially for kinda new quilters like me, I checked all the videos on u tube and other and you are # 1 by far, tomorrow or next I am going to try this 10 minutes block, thank you for a great lesson.
I absolutely love your video. I will for sure be making one of these quilts and I have only ever made a pillowcase quilt before! I look forward to seeing more of your videos!!!
What a fun way to use a spare 10-15 minutes! And, to use up odds and ends from the stash. I am going to stock pile these, for quilts and pillows. Genius!
I just watched Suzanne's video on this block, and tried it this morning when I couldn't sleep. I liked it, but didn't like that bulky middle seam. I love your version, with the cutout and the added piece in the middle. And I really love that extra bridge!
Great tutorial Jean! Thanks for the tip for removing bulk in centre back of block... So many possibilities, using different fabrics and finishes. Will be adding this to my list of quilts for my family. Cheers, Chris
I love this tutorial, you explain in such a good way that even I can understand. I am 80 years old and have so garments for years, but I really want to be able to do good Quilting thank you so much.
Thank you for doing these tutorials. I bought Suzanne McNeil’s 10 Minute Block booklet years ago, but have never made it. I’ll enjoy following your tutorials when I do.
Please don’t mind the thumbs down , you did a really awesome job , I really enjoy watching you . Thankyou for all that you put out for the beginners 🌹💕💕💕
Thanks for the tip that gets rid of all the bulk in the middle. That was my complaint about this block which I love for all the possibilities. I'm currently doing the block with an embroidered sunbonnet Sue in the focus square in the window. The bulk under the embroidered square is going away tomorrow!! Now, my gift for you . . . The center square of fabric which you fold can be a different size than the other 4. I've made these smaller, but I REALLY like to make them DOUBLE the size of the outer squares. If I use four 8" squares, I cut a 16" square to fold. The resulting center window will be about 8." This allows me to do a nice fussy cut feature in the center, or to machine embroider a focal design on point, leaving a nice "empty" space around my embroidery. When I do this, I prefer 3 fabrics, 1 dark, a coordinating light, and the "frame" square that will set off the focal piece. This lets me have each focal piece be different and shown off dramatically. One dark and one light, all the same, also allows you to do different whole quilt design lay outs by rotating the light/dark placement.
Okay now I see how this comes together. I have this thing about flowers and birds. I would for sure put a bird or a single flower in cased that square. Thanks another lesson, your a great teacher, 👍❤️😊
Oh don't worry! That is my go-to popular video! Even if it was deleted somehow, I would do another in-depth tutorial on the block! I actually have just made a quilt with this block, however I used a Jelly Roll (strips) and then constructed the block. It probably will be my next tutorial! :) Thanks for watching! :)
Hi Jean! I love your variation of this ten minute block. It's so creative, looks complicated and difficult, but also so stunning a pattern. You have challenged me to try a new quilt pattern. Thank you and keep you videos coming. I like your style and creativity.
PS. I'm a little jealous of your beautiful studio with all your fabrics being visible and within arm reach. Great work space. This is the second idea you've given me, this time to reorganize my workspace and my fabrics. Merci beaucoup, Jean!
Thanks so much! My 'style and creativity' are somewhat all over the place and we certainly have not perfected our video quality, but we are working on it! Thanks again!
I love this block. I bought the book a few years ago. Can’t wait to see what you do with it. I used a layer cake. In one of her books or videos she shows you how to do the curved technique but I don’t think she added the insert fabric. You always come up with the greatest “up sews”! Cutting out the excess is a fabulous add.
I made this top about 6 yrs ago......It's still a top.....i kept looking at it like you did and thought where I connected them I would put another square in there...Well you took it the step further with the big diamond....I love that Idea!!! I think I'm going to let my seam ripper meet the quilt top? LOL LOL Blessed Day!
@@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory I was going to just top stitch other my errors but yesterday I just sat with Mr. Ripper for a couple of minutes and then reworked the blocks, they were perfect. Yes, it took a few minutes of fiddling with the second side but with you showing me the little "square", it gave me an end goal. I suspect with a bit of experience with setting that second side, it will be under a minute to position.
A little reminder and information for beginners that are following along with this wonderful block and/or comparing this to other patterns and instructions, a square on point is not the same as a diamond shape.

This is a beautiful pattern, especially with the 'cathedral window' center that you added to it. I would have liked to see how you added the four blocks together and made the larger center block. Why not do a part II video, for those of us who are more of a Visual person. Thanks for sharing.

Wow!! Just discovered your channel and this is great 😊 Will be following, thank you for sharing the tutorial ☺️👍☺️
Thanks so much! 😊 I appreciate that Sandra;)
I see where I had all the trouble with my blocks, marking the 5.32 timestamp to better understand. Thank you for the closeup and explanation.
So pleased it cleared thing up! I DO get there in the end!! LOL! Thanks Glory:)
You explained this so clearly. Thank you :)
i love the idea of taking out that center on the back, i will be doing this, thank you very much. love your tutorial

Thanks so much! I'll work on it! YES!
