    I worked for scotts.... Crabgrass on lawn edges like yours is almost impossible to stop. Use a pre emergent in spring and reseed in fall. Leave your lawn at least 3 inches in late spring when crabgrass will try emerg. Keeping your lawn growing higher will stop crabgrass seeds from contact with ground in fall and lower your crabgrass chances for next year.

    I use a very strong dinner fork to remove them with whole roots which are rooted very deeply. Fork is a good tool if you have controllable number of them. You even can remove dandelions with a fork. So efficient! Try it.

    Roger is super knowledgeable. I would conceded to him any day but a lot of these tips are mostly for northern climates. I try to keep my Bermuda @ 1" and Centipede 2". We try to choke out the crabgrass. Also Bluegrass, Rye and Fescue is dead here by May if not March

    This is a very informative video on crabgrass. I have crabgrass in my whole backyard and try to pull-out as much as I can, but it always seems to come back the next year. I don't treat my lawn though the way Roger does, so that is likely why it comes back.

    My approach to crabgrass is a little different. First, get the PH right by adding lime to build the calcium in the soil, this discourages weeds. Spray the other weeds to knock them down and reduce the weed pressure. Get a pre-emergent down both fall and spring to help eliminate the problem. Put down a balanced fertilizer in late spring, around half the bag rate; too much fertilizer is worse that not enough. Once your lawn is healthy, it will look better and require less maintenance.

    Key word..SPRING time to Lay Crabgrass Preventer.. Is key.. You do it by or Before Memorial Day ..any later? forget it..Get ready to dig out alot of CG or having alot of Brown Spots, ave 2x2 sq ft spots all over your Nice Lawn and then Have to wait and did g it up and plant new Grass Seed and Moss ontop and water it every day for a week, EOD for 2 wks and Every week for a Month..Like roger says and a Real Big PIA..

    Just lay sod at that point. Most people don't just have crab grass on the edges. If you have crab grass in the fall, pull it out and add some seed. Or mow it super low and bag and seed. Next spring put down pre-emergent and you won't have an issue.

      Dethatching rake, dish soap and water mix and then you need to correct the underlying issue.
      Moss develops in environment of shade, moisture, and low PH. Use lime on the lawn, I also like Mag-i-cal from Jonathangreen . Com. If you can thin out the shade that would help.

      TheSacredBush hand pull it before it gets seed heads if that's doable. Or, use round up to kill it. Then reseed in the fall and put a preemergent down in the spring. Repeat process each year as needed. Took me 2 full seasons of pulling it out in summer, reseeding in fall and preemergent in spring. I still use preemergent every year but probably don't really need to.

After 20 yrs here and more then half going it myself and I started with a dirt and crab grass mess. No knowledge just did what seemed right. (I've never heard of emergent..Can't wait to see what that's all about!) Anyway right after make surgery last summer, it was fall, I rippedd out a giant square of the yard trying to figure out what I can do. It grew in worse- ikes! I'm not sure how I'll get the yard aerated no tools and pretty much no funds. But I'm despair to get her looking and feeling her best. I dream of walking on a soft , thick, healthy learn once again. @@kathleenchamp3764 you can get a Yard Butler hand aerator for $30. It is time intensive but on a nice fall day you can aerate your lawn 2 holes at a time. Over seed as you go or after. Milorganite works wonders and cover 2500sq ft for $9. Use it spring and memorial day at least. ortho weed killer worked for me, rip up by hand anything it didn't kill and reseed and you're set. Mow high spring until jacket weather, then cut short and that's it

    I have 400 pounds compost made mainly of oak leaves, little grass clippings.... Should I be CONCERNED about PH of my compost when doing new lawn. I assume I should be adding compost. • @frandanco6289
      @frandanco6289 7 лет назад

      Normally acidic plants or trees leaves, will tend to make the soil acidic and you have to put down lime to bring the PH back to where most grasses can get the nutrients better..
      If you had the soil tested correctly after the oak leaf compost was I assume rototilled into the soil, and let go for awhile before testing, and you are still coming out neutral, then go ahead and plant your lawn.. Are you going to use turf or seeds?
      Good luck..

      Crabgrass is only one foot tall when fully grown. Sounds like you have Giant African Creeping Fescue. If you don't do something about it, it'll eventually take over your neighborhood and lower property values. Might even get in your grown children's beds and promulgate unless you've raised them properly.

      You should be able to rent the machines for much lower cost than purchase price, I’d recommend a local shop rather than Home Depot or Lowe’s, who will charge much more.

    Way too much work for crabgrass. Just start using a pre-emergent regularly and using Quinclorac as a post emergent.

    • @Siyko

      Crabgrass cannot survive on a healthy lawn with thick grass, period. You will always have crabgrass seeds in your lawn, and in the right conditions they *will* germinate and start to grow. So you can either apply a herbicide every couple years, turning the crabgrass into brown patches, or you could fix your lawn once, making sure crabgrass cannot survive. This video takes the latter approach.

      do you know why he puts seed down after the compost, opposed to before the compost?

    • @Switch3000
      @Switch3000 6 лет назад

      Jesse Russell yeah I was thinking the same thing, instead of 1/2 first, maybe 1/4, then the seed, and another 1/4

    • @jimk5307
      @jimk5307 6 лет назад +2

      Jesse Russell most topsoil over seed should be 1/4”, almost 100% of people will overshoot this by a lot. Better to lightly rake to cover the seeds. (Back of rake)

    How do I get rid of ugly foreign grass that doesn't belong that is not crabgrass?

    • @Rearmostbean
      @Rearmostbean 2 года назад

      Dig up the spot and re seed. Hard to get rid of grassy weeds otherwise. Otherwise you battle with it forever.

    God forbid you use the back of the rake

  • @orangejuli07
    @orangejuli07 7 лет назад +1

    Yeah.. so what do we do if crab grass is like 50-80% of our existing lawn, and it's mature and drops seeds every time we mow?
    Do I have to basically rake and tear up the entire lawn and start over? that seems ridiculous

    • @forrestforrest7790
      @forrestforrest7790 7 лет назад +1

      Yes, that would be the easiest alternative otherwise you will be battling that crabgrass for years.

    • @brandon9715
      @brandon9715 6 лет назад

      If you ask me, easiest thing to do would be to "nuke" it with Glyphosate (Roundup) and start over with fresh seed and starter fertilizer.
