    In my own experience...I have recently realized that it is important to accept every moment as it is...do not look for anything beyond what is there.Sow the seeds but dont chase the sunlight. To give up all the stories in our head is not easy but its rewarding. I have learned a whole new meaning of accepting Life as it is...I never connected it to 'Hukum' ...how wonderful!! Thank you so much for this. It has given new strength to me....

      If you get hungry,you say to others to eat food behalf you,no you eat yourself, because you are hungry as same if you are suffering and struggling in life ,just do pray for your self that will work for you, because you know your problems better .how strangers help you,they don't know anything about your pain and problems.... emotions plays an important role when you do mediation or prayers .next time do things for your self,be strong and don't depend on others.

    This is so wonderful. I am glad finally we have more clear Non Dual explanation from Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. When I was young I could see Non Duality in Sikh teachings but no religious service fully explained it. It was shrouded. We need this clarity. Monotheistic Worship with a Punishment and Reward plan.. is not what Sikhi is about. Very glad to hear this. I also practice Buddhist teachings. Now after 3 decades of my life I can see the common ground of these two paths. Such insightful clarification helps people to not fall for delusion. Devotion is not about worship its rather about cultivating and practicing the right view. I will share this with my family....

    Dear Satpal,
    Thank you for bringing Gurbani to light in a way that perhaps can be better understood for English speakers. However, Hukam in my eyes is not as you describe and relay it. It is a reality, but also "a destiny". Hukam is prewritten, based on Karam and our Father allows us an opportunity to change that Karam if we can find our right place in this world, by knowing that HE is the keeper "Karta Purakh", and what he has decided for us is what we should accept (call that Hukam or Destiny). Accepting his way, and saying there is a purpose to it, is not wrong. It shows that we have surrendered to his power and are willing to be in his command. That itself is what brings selflessness, love, and spirituality to life.
    The fish in the water cannot change the flow of the river, but HE who cares for that fish CAN, because HE believes the fish needs a different direction now. The Fish who understood HIM, would not ask the river to change direction, it would ask for guidance from the keeper on its destination.
    A mother disciplining her child does not mean the mother does not love the child. It DOES mean that the mother means well. A good child will accept that there is a reason for this anger and that the future will be brighter because of this. This obedience is the exact method a Gursikh must use with the GURU.
    Surrendering is acceptance and acceptance is not a compromise with the GURU for more, it is respect for his HUKAM, and hope that only HE knows best. Trusting in him as FATHER, gives us the right to believe that HE will always do what is BEST and that is not wrong.
    Sharing vichar with love and respect for THE ONE.

    • @RashminderKaurindia
      @RashminderKaurindia 4 года назад +5

      The point here is that...if we are hoping for something different...seeking justification...it is a sign that we are not accepting the reality as it is. When there is complete acceptance it brings both strength and clarity which is all we need to change what needs to change. Whereas in hoping...we want to be a small child and refusing to grow up and take responsibility for our own self. We want comfort and assurance. We want to take short cut....and not reflect deeper. There is no sepration between creator and creation. That is our dream...so as long as we need a Father or Mother Figure we will experience it...when we dont it will disappear...what will remain then?? It cannot be spoken....

    I’m currently experiencing a rough time in my marriage. I raised some points that were weighing on me for a long time. So I took the courage to express this. The response I got from my partner was that why am I to raise this now. Why should I have just raised this back in the beginning or should not raise it at all. But at that time it wasn’t feasible. But now with other factors this was something that I felt was feasible to raise now. I accepted that what I went through then was hukkam. But now where my feelings have resurfaced am I not to accept those feelings as hukkam now? I too want to believe what I am feeling right now is hukkam, it’s a part of my life and I’m to accept it for what it is right now. But my partner is convinced that I shouldn’t have raised this matter. Which makes me doubt myself. I am not the optimist or try to think something good will come out of this. I’m being made to feel guilty for this but not believe this is hukkam.

    My grandfather said always blessings in disguise. I think the key is to make the best out of even a bad situation. Something good is hidden even in what you think is bad and if I look back at my life everytime things happened bad to me in terms of the world
    ..in future it turned out to be a blessing and I think back it is due to the reason how i choose to react to it...i did get depressed and angry and went through the human notions as i believe it is not normal to suppress them. But aftermath should be to find the blessings in that and the reaction i choose to that worldly wrongdoing determines the real outcome to that doing. What seemed bad for me and everyone said poor Navi I turned it to a blessing in the future that great that it made my past wrongs as of they were blessings in disguise. I hope i make sense.

    I believe as long as the word 'GOD' is used, confusion will remain endlessly. We slipped up in the wrong direction from the very beginning by defining Ek Onkar as "there is one god". The rest of it made no sense. Whereas Ek Onkar was referred to as oneness, one power of nature, one universe, one existence, one life - and we are part of it as one. Its like you prepared yourself to set off on a journey and written the directions, but if you're starting the journey facing the wrong direction, then even with your written directions you'll never reach your destination.

    That's not really a statement of duality imo. When people say everything happens for a reason, they're not expecting pleasurable things to happen at some point...it's actually perfectly compatible with the Oneness and accepting the hukam. As finite, limited beings we can't possibly know what's truly good for us; the all-wise Master knows best.
    ਕਾੜਾ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਕਿਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਧਰਮਿ ਮਾਰਦਾ ॥Why should we feel any burning anxiety, since the Lord does not punish without just cause?
    This is the real source of contentment in Sikhi. This understand that we are individual vessels of perception for the Infinite One, and that one day we'll all return to the One, and that this One is control of everything is the reason why Har Bhagats are always carefree and accepting of the wider Hukam of the cosmos.

    • @heavymetaldeath4life
      @heavymetaldeath4life 7 лет назад +7

      This is where dharm(a) comes in. On the one hand we have the greater Hukam in the universe, which does its own thing and will continue to do so. In this hukam, there is both happiness and sadness, justice and injustice, good and evil, etc. This is just a fact of life. But within the individual sphere, we have our own hukam to follow. Guru Nanak says this earth is the home for dharma, of righteous living. So yes, we should get involved with politics and society, have a family and care for our loved ones. But at the same time, we must always remind ourselves that ultimately, it's the divine will. This is where detachment comes in. Guru Gobind Singh clearly loved his 4 sons and cared for them, but he was not attached to them, hence he didn't lament when he sacrificed his entire family for the sake of dharma.

      I agree with you Satinder Singh... To say everything happens for a reason fits perfectly with accepting hukam, its not that ur expecting a better outcome in the future. Its recognition that if nothing els, then this dukh i have suffered means i have paid the price for som bad deeds done by me in my past. So to have paid off that debt is a good outcome in itself.

    Well. yes and no. I can see how Bhai Sahib is responding to how many people may speak and perceive, on the surface of it. However, on a deeper level, everything absolutely always happens for a reason, and it is our job to figure out why, this is called antargat teerath mal naao. You need to ask why, you need to wash your perception of what is happening. This is being in the state of Saram Khand. If you just sit and shrug your shoulders, you will never progress. Sometimes we don't realise the why until years and decades later. In that sense, I fully agree with Bhai Sahib, we don't need to know that why. We just need to submit to Hukam. And being conscious of what is happening, being sensitive to it, and figuring out why it is happening and progressing, is also in Hukam. Some people don't have that sensitivity, they live and die in Maya, and that is also in Hukam. But that also happens for a reason. This whole system is set up for a reason.

    To me, this seems like hukam means things simply just are - and those things are written by god - but our reaction to those things is what we compartmentalize as "good" or "bad" . But maybe god is not trying to enforce good or bad upon us, his path is just what is what unravels in the present moment, and the only thing we can control is our reaction in the present moment. So we can be positive and trust the love of god or exist in our ego that distances us from god. Everything happens, but the WHY isn't what we should be focusing on, it should be WHAT should we doing in reaction to that thing that is happening.

    If I say "oh well, there must be a reason"- very high among those reasons is there may be a lesson that I need to learn - so God / the universe / whatever is sending me what I need, not what I want- and it may be a rough ride (as I get my bum metaphorically slapped. Also known as the last 20 years of my life Lol!).
    Is this not accepting Hukam? Things are rough at the moment but hey- Gods will?
    Many thanks for any kind explanations, and many thanks for the info you share.

    Obviously everything is open to interpretation. Labeling good and bad makes so sense as that's just our human judgement.
    None of us are God's so let God judge what is good or bad. But on our own end we must follow the guidelines and allow God to direct us in the truthful path.

    If we do not like the Hukum but we accept it and continue living it wouldnt that be a compromise. Its just a question that came after listening to this. Hope to get an answer.

    I think what ppl usually mean is that these things are meaningful and are happening according to some divine plan, and aren't just pointless suffering, not that they will necessarily lead to a good outcome in this life. Now what this "meaning" is supposed to be, I don't know, but I assume ppl mean for some "good purpose". And that usually means like a greater good, or some good beyond our understanding.
    But I do find your analysis to be interesting. And I agree that ultimately whichever interpretation one uses, it can become an empty coping mechanism. But if it makes ppl get through life easier, whom am I to deny them that?

    The Universe can not exist and function without factoring in randomness and free choice. Coincidences do exist. Yes, I agree with what is said here. The words chaos and serendipity are different connotations we use depending upon how we relate to a random event. Good luck and bad luck are both just luck. Luck depends upon randomness. We randomize playing cards when we shuffle the deck. Bingo numbers are randomized by tumbling in a rotating cage. Provided the dice in use is not unfairly weighted, there is no telling which side of the cube is on top after being rolled. Randomness is part and parcel of existence. Adding human free will into the equation either limits the possible outcomes of the action involved or increases the possible outcomes. Whether free will really exists or not is immaterial. It is the choice itself that is the factor. With an infinite amount of activities taking place in Existence and every potential outcome of those actions figured in, there is no way of predicting the future. God created the tree and all its parts and attributes. God created the Earth and the Sun. The general direction of the tree's development is upwards but God Himself neither knows and probably doesn't even care just how and where each root, branch, vine and leaf grow. The trees roots grow down. The trunk basically grows skyward but exactly how each leaf and branch grow is anyone's guess including God's. Ask yourself how boring it would be to exist eternally and to know just how everything in the Universe is going to work out beforehand. That would probably even drive God Himself nuts. Yes, there are coincidences because not only does God roll the dice, He lets us toss them now and then as well. This way, we're all sufficiently entertained.

      You say with authority "Luck depends upon randomness" or "Randomness is part and parcel of existence" and I say that is just your speculation. I believe it's more complex than what we characterize as randomness. I disagree. Everything that happens is reaction off an action. Listen to great katha vachiks like Sant Singh Maskeen, Sant Katar Singh Bindranwale, Giani Kulwant Singh Ludianeh wale. Also Gurbani tells that everything is a reaction of our own doing.
    ਦਦੈ ਦੋਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਊ ਕਿਸੈ ਦੋਸੁ ਕਰੰਮਾ ਆਪਣਿਆ ॥
    Dadda: Do not blame anyone else; blame instead your own actions
    ਜੋ ਮੈ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੋਸੁ ਨ ਦੀਜੈ ਅਵਰ ਜਨਾ ॥੨੧॥
    Whatever I did, for that I have suffered; I do not blame anyone else. ||21||

      You are correct brother. But beauty of Gurbani is that it speaks to all students (Sikh) at their stage of speritual journey.
      As per my understanding, as long as we have the ਮੈਂ, we face the consequences. But with Gurus kirpa when the ਮੈਂ is eliminated, consequenes are fully understood as the Hukum. In Rehras Sahib Guru ji says
      Jab lag janay mujh te kachhu hoye||
      Tab iss kao sukh nahi koye||
      Jab ih janay may kicch karta||
      Tab lag garabh jone meh phirta||
      Jab dharay kaou bairi meet||
      Tab lag nihchal nahi cheet||
      Jab lag moh magan sang maye||
      Tab lag Dharamraye dey sajaye||
      Prabh kirpa te bandhan tootay||
      Gurparsaad Nanak haou chhootay||4||
      Once we are free from bondages of subjective/objective (Maya) world we learn both ਮੈਂ and ਤੂੰ were illussions.
      All the so called "reasons" were human interpretation of Hukum.
      A wave may think it is broken because it hit the rock but the wave was acting as the forces of ocean. And we are nothing but waves of 1 ocean.
      Someone said it really nicely "a wave is what whole ocean in doing at a place & time, same way a human is what whole universe is doing in one place & time"

      Yes.. i agree. Every thing whatever happens in this universe happens for a reason. I feel these day anyone can come open youtibe channel amd can say whatever they percieved according to their level of wisdom. But that can be their truth? but thata not what is it. It is a scientific law aswell. We cant deny the laws of universe.

    I kind of disagree to this concept bcuz when bad happens human common sense tells us that wrong or something not very good is happening likewise for goodness. I disagree to the belief that humans don't address something as good or bad bcuz ppl won't address that issue and work on it . A very good example of this is how ppl abuse religious authority is someone has manipulated the religious books and then they spread the wrong message or wrong principle naturally it will destroy families it will hurt someone somewhere. And knowing this is onlookers or the person himself just thinks alright it's just happening noone will address it. We have to address it seek help support the right beliefs and negate the wrong doings

    I believe that Bhai Ji is trying to point beyond dualistic mental concepts towards the non-dual Existential, which I wholeheartedly appreciate. However, I’d love to see evidence of how this thought or no-thought paradigm actually correlates with Gurbani. He seems to be operating on an entirely different system of thought, and trying to bring Gurbani along with it. I empathize with the conflict but it appears to me that the duality of giver / receiver, I and Thou (hum / tum) is prevalent throughout Gurbani, and isn’t merely the result of mistranslations. That said, Gurbani does awaken the non-dual consciousness and realization of Ongkar (the unstruck sound) so the apparent contradictions may be a result of mistakenly identifying poetry as prose. Through Gurbani “I” easily “realized” Ongkar at the age of 20. However, lacking self-confidence and lost in myriad concepts and superstitious ideologies, I continued to seek “Mr. God” for many years. I think that this is an important issue to be discussed.

    Sorry paji I disagree when you say things dont happen for a reason. Gurbani clearly states what ever the lord does he does for our betterment but we do not see it that way, this is actually written. Also "Whatever is pleasing to Your Will is good; by Your Sweet Will, my affairs are adjusted."
    In every situation, with all that occurs there is room to learn, ti benefit and become more truthful. So nothing is bad, gurbani says this, see all that occurs as good.
    jo kichh keeo soiee bhal maanai aaisee bhagat kamaanee ||
    Whatever the Lord does, he sees that as good; such is the devotional service he performs.
