I should have drafted matt linart but my real life biased took over and took jay over linart and Young but he fits my scheme. But ill probably trade for a journey man and develop Smokin Jay for a few years but hes better than kelly Holcomb.
Absolutely agree. I played this game at a time in my life when I actually coached football. It was almost as real as a video game could be about coaching. A couple of thing hurt it if I remember things correctly. First, it came out deep in the off-season when no one was thinking about football, 2. Madden had a great franchise mode that satisfied most people, NCAA existed and was a formidable game itself, and most people want to be the players not the coaches. I stopped playing because I found it too easy. As long as you participated in everything and tried hard you would win. I never lost a game and never had an injury. Maybe the base settings allowed that but if I simulated games I would get tons of injuries and actually lose games. But I wanted to call the plays and when I did, I won. Who knows, maybe I missed my calling, but I think the game was flawed in that way. Otherwise it was a phenomenal game!!!
This game was so legendary and all it does is frustrate me at how bare bones franchise mode is now. This game just shows what a football sim should be like, and is like when EA actually tries. Weird how the stronger and more powerful the consoles got, the worse franchise mode got and the less features we got.
I played this game for so many hours back in the PS2 days. I still remember coaching the Eagles for 19 seasons, because that was when the last remaining players from the original game had retired, and only randomly generated players were left (I think Robbie Gould and Nate Kaeding were the last two). I also remember creating a play on defense where both cornerbacks blitzed, and Sheldon Brown ended up winning DPOY with 12 sacks my first season. Good times.
NFL Head Coach was amazing. I loved playing it and building my own dynasty. It really put you on the hot seat and made you become an expert scout, play designer, and team builder.
My dad bought me this as a kid, and I could never figure it out. But looking back at it at the age of 25, I really appreciate EA making this game. It has more quality to offer than the new titles.
I need this game in my life, I started playing madden with 17 and all I want is an immersive coaching experience. Also, it would be really cool if 2k made something like this. Thanks for the vid
I played this a bit when it first came out and I remember being so shocked by how detailed the game was. This was franchise mode was supposed to be and I wished they could have took some of these and kept building on it and adding it to future Madden games. I hope you do the NFL Head Coach 09 too
I was just remembering this game. I never played 09 but this game was so unique. This was at the height of Maddens success and innovation. I really liked how they had their rating system for instance players would be rated let's say 80-90ovr,they didn't have one number for their rating but it could fluctuate depending on how they practice and play. I'd like to see Madden implement a rating system in the same vein cause just like IRL a great player might have a bad game or vice versa. It was so much fun being a football fan that played video games back in the PS2 days.
Yeah, this and head coach 09, amazing. And probably super cheap to make, they already had the NFL license and just lifted most of the graphics from madden
I loved both of them!! I remember coaching New Orleans, I drafted Reggie Bush with the 2nd pick and traded for the 4th pick and drafted Matt Leinhart . the rest of the draft beefed up the O line and secondary. first season I went 6-10, next two seasons 8-8, third season I went 11-5 made it to the NFC Championship... I LOVED that game!
Please review 09 NFL Head coach. I bought both games cause of this review for my backwards compatible PS3. Both underappreciated titles. Keep up the excellent work bro!

I had no idea this game existed. when I was big on madden franchises / ncaa dynasties, I would often set the control to 'neutral' to watch the CPU play. just to see how my team would perform in a matchup given recent roster adjustments, progressions, etc. so awesome
Great Video as always! I don't know what's more shocking, the fact that EA still owns the ESPN license or that they still haven't used it in 2020!!! 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️😡😡😡
This game and the 09 version of it has to be the most creative and different licensed sports game I have ever played! I still play both games to this day.
Sad the series didn’t sell well. It would sell much better today with everyone dying for a halfway decent franchise mode. And for all the sim heads like myself. Would love a new Head Coach.
2+ years after your comment, and Madden continues to produce god awful nonsense, a game like this nowadays would be golden. If they were going to destroy franchise mode so badly, they could have at least released a head coach game each year along side Madden so that folks who want a deep franchise mode would still have it
As a Raiders fan, I was happy that I saw the baseball diamond finally put into the Raiders stadium in a football game (Around 3:12) but the Raiders logo was there at the same time and the baseball diamond is facing the wrong way LOL.
Great game had it first when i was a kid. Then bought another ps2 recently just to play this game. This game is what coach mode in franchise for madden should be
I rented this game from blockbuster back in middle school, I thought it was just ok back then, but I would probably love it now. I didn't appreciate the depth of franchise mode back then.
Anyone else remember buying that thick ass strategy guide book for this game?😂😂 it was like an encyclopedia the amount of depth in that thing but I had a blast reading it

There are two games I can't wait to play again, that's why I'm hoping the PS5 has full backward compatibility. This and NCAA 2014!!! But this game was so on point, NOTHING like it since😩. Great video👍🏾✌🏾
Never played 06 but 09 was one of the best times I had playing that generation era football. The draft classess were a work of art. The 84 qb draft class. You could draft "Bo Jackson" and "Barry Sanders". The share features were awesome as well. You could dl other ppl's plays they created to create your own unique playbook. The only down side to 09 was the fact that it only allowed you to play 10 yrs.
Oh man I had this game on my ps2. I had so much fun with it. The problem was though eventually it got scratched to the point that the game would freeze upon trying to play the first real game of the season.
They still have similar things to this for Soccer and Motorsport (Football manager and Motorsport manager) I have been waiting for years for somebody to come along and make a game using this formula for any of the US sports especially Football (because the coaching side of it is probably the most important, in-depth and layered in sports) but there hasn't been anything for over a decade
Since getting more into football and learning more about the coaching side of things, I’ve found myself tinkering with sliders to create a genuine coach mode experience in these old Madden titles. I even use external software to create my own playbooks. I have drawn up a couple unnecessarily rude blitzes where the idea is to overwhelm one lineman with like three guys. Hit the RT with an ILB, OLB, and a DE out of a 3-4, someone’s getting through. For games where I play against other people, I’ve even worked to disguise my playbook. If there’s a blitz on the same page as just a standard play, I have those players set to show blitz so even if you’re looking at my playbook, you’re still going to think blitz when you see the guy that was designated as blitzing is now showing blitz. I’ll even use them as decoys on pages with two blitzes. You’ll see someone show blitz, you think you got your slide protection set right, you have the TE assisting, then you find out you’re protecting the wrong side. I do the same thing on offense. If I’m going to have a play action, it’s going on the same page right next to a run play that looks similar.
You should do a colab with Ryan Moody for the Madden 21 review. I’ve commented this on other videos and I think we all can agree that it would be sick!!!
DynastyKit that’s interesting. I think it’s the opposite. You’re right that Ryan Moody gives off a hater vibe, but that’s cus he’s so invested into making a point. He always tries to give a way for EA to improve. Soft Drink seems to review more from the POV of a casual fan. When there is a problem or a missing feature, he’ll simply say that they should just simply put it back in h the game.
Since Head Coach was only done for 2 years & it was so in depth I wonder if it was a passion project for someone at EA or very influential. Like how a movie director will make several hit movies for a studio, so they greenlight a small budget/production for the director to make the type of movie they always wanted to
I think what happened with 09 is they spent all the effort on the gameplay and just did a functional UI. Which is fine it's a great game. But that engine with this UI would have been a magical. Head coach 09 is kind of a misleading title though that's really more of a general manager game.
Make a video on Head Coach 09. I must have sunk 500+ hours in that back in the day. Occasionally returning to it once every now and then. The depth, the attention to detail with the players was so great. Players had attitudes that reflected how the team functioned. Was wildly underrated.
I wish. Sadly 2009 is hard to emulate and physical copies run for like $100. I'm not sure how many more features are in the 2009 version vs the one simply named "Head Coach", though. So this info may not matter too much if they're equally awesome.
NFL head coach was a cool concept that I wish they would bring back. Heck like one year they do Madden, next year head coach. IDK how many Madden fans would but it still give them something to put out every year.
I remember having this game and I enjoyed playing it at first but idk if it was just me but it felt like I was putting in so many hours and I could never get tot he actual season. I’d be in the off season foreverrrr. For me it was to the point where the game is so in depth I feel like I’m working a job with no pay and I was not feeling that shit 😂
you should make a video about Madden 07 Superstar mode. I played the hell outta that when I was younger, especially on the Wii, making RBs and trucking everybody lol, nah but the superstar mode was amazing and had a lot of depth too from what I remember. you even got to choose both your parents to see how you'd turn out based on their genes!
I always wondered about this game when it was released and current; the fact that it had Cowher on the front cover drew my attention, but like many others at the time, I couldn't figure out why I would buy this game over Madden or 2K (which was defunct by then, but 2K4 was still a regular in my console back then). I may go back and pick up a copy now to give it a spin, thanks for the video!
This is a great game. Played the heck out of it on PC. My most memorable run was starting with the Saints, going .500 the first year. Then trading for Reggie Bush and Vince Young and reeling off 10 straight Super Bowl rings. Might have to see if I still have it somewhere.
Buy or download this for pc *only* as a piece of advice. You can download custom sliders to let you actually make the game difficult and can update the rosters if you want. The game on console has no difficulty slider but is set to rookie, so this is a must do if you want to enjoy this gem.
For some reason I always picked the ravens, because then you got Brian billick (who would be a coaching free agent) as your OC and then have Rex Ryan as your DC
FWIW, I loved NFL HC09 and played it as my main video game for about five years after its release, and I wrote about its mechanics and strategy extensively on the boards at Operation Sports. You obviously have affection for HC06; if you haven't given HC09 a serious try, I strongly encourage you to do so, and I'd love to see your thoughts if/when you get around to making a video on it. It's one of my favorite games of all time. Happy gaming! :)
Games like this show if EA would actually try to make a good game they could but instead they just care about copying the same games with a shit ton of microtransactions
I loved this game. Still do. I like the strategy as I get older. Actually interviewing potential assistant coaches, deciding during the week which players are going to get more playing time, etc. Still a great game but unfortunately from another era. Everything today is for the young heads playing MUT
I own both Head Coach games, I'm a fan of both games. However the original game had such great concepts and presentation. Game is super detailed. Would be great as a youtube series (As someone in the comments is doing currently) and would be great to have streamed due to the game being very time consuming. The unfortunate one big problem with the original Head Coach, at least for my copy, the game would freeze in certain points, specifically during practices. Which was such a momentum killer, practices were super important you wanted to get all practice slots in, but with that type of glitch you had no choice but to skip it at times. Auto saving and saving between every assignment was an option, but saving took so much time to do. Only ONE big problem messed up what potentially was an incredible game. Only other problem was the loading times. I feel like if this game was released on the 360 and the PS3 it would've ran much better. The game was huge.
I would really love for the next generation of consoles to have this game back on the shelves. I was too young to appreciate this and head coach 09. Now I am 23 I am seriously contemplating going out and get a ps3 to play head coach 09 especially since Mr. Hurriicane started a series with the game
Still play this game and have a series going much respect for showing it love ✌
Agreed. I Do Wish EA Would Make A Head Coach Game For PS5 Since The Older Games Are Gaining Popularity.

Yep cause 21 i got a feeling it's going to be worse somehow
Ryan Moody gives off too much of a hater vibe while SoftDrinks has a more analytical approach in my opinion.
Drake Smith it’s gonna be like flight in June.
@@tennisweekly2012 flight the film ?
Since Head Coach was only done for 2 years & it was so in depth I wonder if it was a passion project for someone at EA or very influential. Like how a movie director will make several hit movies for a studio, so they greenlight a small budget/production for the director to make the type of movie they always wanted to
Head coach 09 is my favorite football game ever
Hey was that Mrhurriicane's Head Coach 09 vid at 0:54
Yes... yes it was
This game is great, I use to call plays through my headset & had 8 perfect seasons
Watched this video when you dropped it. Went to a retro game store today, saw it and picked it up for $4.99 on XBOX! Loading it in now, I'm excited!
I think what happened with 09 is they spent all the effort on the gameplay and just did a functional UI. Which is fine it's a great game. But that engine with this UI would have been a magical. Head coach 09 is kind of a misleading title though that's really more of a general manager game.
This video literally made me go buy this game for my ps2 two weeks ago LOL. The game is amazing
I'm going to buy it too after watching this. Can't wait to play it.👍
Just bought this game
Man I had so much fun playing this game I remember taking the Chicago Bears to the superbowl and winning it in my 3rd season
Love both of the head coach games I still play both 09 a little more sad they never made more, but guess it didn’t sell enough
I'm grinding in 09 on my channel right now.
I bought this for Xbox back then. I still have Head Coach 09 for the 360.
Make a video on Head Coach 09. I must have sunk 500+ hours in that back in the day. Occasionally returning to it once every now and then. The depth, the attention to detail with the players was so great. Players had attitudes that reflected how the team functioned. Was wildly underrated.
Would love to see a retrospective of head coach 09'. Great vid!
I still have a ps3 with just a few games I'll play every now and again that I can't let go. NCAA football, Fight Night , and my favorite Head coach 09
Now that I've watched this video.....I guess it's time to dust of my PS2, fire it up and play some Head Coach! Thanks Softdrinktv.
WE NEED A DEDICATED COACH AND MANAGEMENT MODE GAME AGAIN! IF we can cross MANAGEMENT with roleplaying and customization. Please give us this!!
Awesome video as usual. Keep it up.
Had a blast playing this. I started with the Detroit Lions and traded for Reggie Bush. I just ran the ball old school
Ok now videos like this is why I subscribed to this channel. Don't go all crazy like the wii video
I loved the first game back in the day. Serious depth with picking coaches, drafting, training etc.
I wish. Sadly 2009 is hard to emulate and physical copies run for like $100. I'm not sure how many more features are in the 2009 version vs the one simply named "Head Coach", though. So this info may not matter too much if they're equally awesome.
I actually have this game, was the coach of the falcons, and in my first preseason game, deangelo hall got 4 INTs and tom Brady threw 6 INTs
NFL head coach was a cool concept that I wish they would bring back. Heck like one year they do Madden, next year head coach. IDK how many Madden fans would but it still give them something to put out every year.
This game would be insanely great as a mobile game. Keep everything the same. Just update the rosters.
That would be a smart idea
Make a video of head coach 09 please just got it for ps3 love it the depth is crazy
Love that you mentioned the late great Steve Sabol. Legendary name.
I still have this game sitting in my bedroom shelf! Great game to play back in the day.
Rip don shula
Nfl head coach was awesome
This is a great game. Played the heck out of it on PC. My most memorable run was starting with the Saints, going .500 the first year. Then trading for Reggie Bush and Vince Young and reeling off 10 straight Super Bowl rings. Might have to see if I still have it somewhere.
I loved Head Coach. I'd play through the night when I first got the game. Heck all I play in Madden franchise is coach mode.
I’m playing this game TIL this day. I say all the time madden should incorporate this into its coach mode.
I'd love to see a video on 09, mostly because I want to know which one is better so I can buy it haha
Buy or download this for pc *only* as a piece of advice. You can download custom sliders to let you actually make the game difficult and can update the rosters if you want.
The game on console has no difficulty slider but is set to rookie, so this is a must do if you want to enjoy this gem.
Still playing today!! One of my favorite sports games, as well for the Xbox
For some reason I always picked the ravens, because then you got Brian billick (who would be a coaching free agent) as your OC and then have Rex Ryan as your DC
I love this game and I still playing it thank you for everything
FWIW, I loved NFL HC09 and played it as my main video game for about five years after its release, and I wrote about its mechanics and strategy extensively on the boards at Operation Sports. You obviously have affection for HC06; if you haven't given HC09 a serious try, I strongly encourage you to do so, and I'd love to see your thoughts if/when you get around to making a video on it. It's one of my favorite games of all time.
Happy gaming! :)
That's cool
When I get the game in inevitably have to search something up maybe I'll come across one of your posts on Operation Sports
Games like this show if EA would actually try to make a good game they could but instead they just care about copying the same games with a shit ton of microtransactions
Yeah this is back when they cared, before the microtransactions, unfortunately I don't think they'll ever go back
I’m bout to go to Double Header tomorrow and look for this game
love your vids. Keep up the good work
I loved this game. Still do. I like the strategy as I get older. Actually interviewing potential assistant coaches, deciding during the week which players are going to get more playing time, etc. Still a great game but unfortunately from another era. Everything today is for the young heads playing MUT
Intresting this concept wasn't quiet abandon as they used it in there late NCAA football, but it was more if you play as accordnator
If it’s on steam or you can find a physical copy, I bet it would run on any sort of pc built within the last 10 years.
