Create A Pattern Fill with Affinity Designer

- Filling your objects with a pattern is a pretty common preset for most graphic design applications, and Affinity Designer is no exception to this. However, pattern fills work slightly different in Affinity Designer than they do in alternative applications, like Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator.
In this tutorial I'll be demonstrating how to create a seamless pattern design, then I'll be showing you how to use it as a pattern fill with Affinity Designer.

Thanks for your Affinity tutorials.
Seeing how they are very generous in their pricing in those times, many of us have jumped ship for Adobe.
Many more to come!
I always love your presentation style. No fluff, just onto it. You are one of the best online tutors that I have encountered. Thanks bud !
Hey Nick, I know you from your great Inkscape videos and I am very happy that you are now making your Affinity Designer expertise available to us. Thank you for that, greetings from Germany.
This is an amazing tutorial. The way you put things, the whole flow of the information. Very well done. Thank you for sharing.
An excellent tutorial, thank you. Really answered my question about how to do a pattern FILL, not just create a repeat in the first place.
Just what I was looking for - you never disappoint Nick! Thank you :)
Excellent tutorial - pacing, scope, details, all perfect. I had no idea this was an available feature. Will use it a lot.
Such specific step by step instructions. You’re a fabulous teacher. Thanks again, Sarah
Thank you Sarah!
Well done Nick, fantastic tutorial. Very clear, can't wait to try it!
This is amazing! Really loved this one. Thanks!
Excellent! So easy to follow. Thank you.
Thanks Nick!
Thank you!
Clear and easy to follow!
You earned my sub. Thank you. This is what I'm looking for.
wowie - really enjoyed this, thank you! :)
Thanks for the tutorial. To address the lines in the pattern, all you have to do is adjust the slice outline so that there are no gaps on the boundaries of the pattern before exporting the pattern file. I think it's also important if the shapes are aligned to the nearest pixel because slicing appears to depend on this.
How do you adjust the slice outline?
thank you very much, it's really helpful for me.
thanks Nick!
Thank you! I don't use Affinity Designer but, I might!
Once you've filled the shape with the pattern, you can then save it as a style in Affinity Designer, so its at hand whenever you need it. However, you would first need to deal with the gaps between the tiles as explained in the video, export both layers as one image, then redo the steps to use it as a bitmap fill. Once the pattern has been added to a shape, right click on it and from the drop down menu, select Create Style. Use the fill tool to resize and angle the style fill as with ordinary fills.
You can also use artboards along with symbols in Affinity Designer to create tiled patterns. Set this up as a template and you're ready to go each time you want to create a pattern.
Thanks!
Is there a way I can make the triangles of the grid bigger?
I think the pattern came out too small so it was exported in low resolution. It will produce blurry results if used as a pattern for other larger designs.
I love your tutorial nick, keep up the work!
BTW are you planning to make Affinity courses like you did with gimp and inkscape?
Yes, in due time.
And what if the bitmap is already embedded on the workspace? Thank you so much for your work!!!
Hi Nick, this was an excellent tutorial. How can someone create seamless patterns in Affinity designer for a desktop PC?
Is it possible to save the pattern as a vector graphic and apply it the same way? I think in Illustrator it was possible to simply save the pattern as a new (vector-based) swatch.
As a full-time graphic designer creating patterns for socks and underwear, I really find this too complicated. I wish the pattern could be dropped in the Swatches palette to be used as a fill like Illustrator does. The Affinity trio is my way around for I can't afford Adobe's monthly subscription and I just hope it follows the ways we are trained to work all these years.
Cool.
How can I edit the pattern later on?
Affinity Designer is better then Illustrator ? or its just a new program ? (first time on your yt and i like your videous about illustrator)
And i want to ask another q , why is the quality of the exports so bad ? in illustrator to be more specific
a mi me quedo perfecto, sin linea blanca, no tuve que retocar
