The Cancelled Dr. Dre and Ice Cube Album

  • 1994 brought about a period of transition two of the biggest breakouts of the previously-dissolved NWA. Ice Cube and Dr. Dre had united to create an album darker than that which we'd perhaps ever heard from the West Coast titans. Unfortunately, this album would never see an official release.
The D.O.C., a long-tenured lyric writer for Dre going all the way back to the NWA days, was poised now to return to rap after a tragic car accident that destroyed his vocal cords and a falling out with Death Row Records.

Can't C Me (if I'm not mistaken, with the Can't See Us title) was originally a Dre & Cube song featuring George Clinton. That production was given to Tha Dogg Pound for their version, that eventually didn't make Dogg Food (1995) album. Then, it was given to 2Pac and was included on what became the All Eyez On Me (1996) double album. So, there's actually 3 versions of the song with 1 being officially released, 1 being leaked in poor quality, and the original take being unheard/unleaked. The production of that song goes back to 1993.🤷🏿‍♂️

Of course, but to keep a more succinct pacing of the video I simply kept only what was the most necessary to sum up the NWA story. There’s plenty of details I could’ve included in that portion, but I felt it would’ve overshadowed the story of Helter Skelter if I dwelled upon it for too long. Let’s just say Ice Cube was the first key member to have left.

Much appreciated, man! It was probably 2010-ish and I was in my early teens when I really dug in to hip-hop. I had always been exposed to it, but hearing the song Friday by Ice Cube at the end credits of the movie was a huge moment for me. I explored quite a bit and discovered so many artists, but the West Coast style has always been my favorite.
I was raised in a working class neighborhood and was never really exposed to the realities of that kind of life, but the music broadened my horizon and understanding of other ways of life, certain struggles I’ll never fully comprehend, and how important hip-hop was/is in bringing people together. To this day, I still feel no other works in hip-hop music can compare to the true creative peak it reached on the West Coast in the early to late 90’s.
Thanks for watching. I am actually in the writing process for a video on Westside Connection’s Bow Down record from 96. Stay tuned!
