The Cancelled Dr. Dre and Ice Cube Album

- 1994 brought about a period of transition two of the biggest breakouts of the previously-dissolved NWA. Ice Cube and Dr. Dre had united to create an album darker than that which we'd perhaps ever heard from the West Coast titans. Unfortunately, this album would never see an official release.
The D.O.C., a long-tenured lyric writer for Dre going all the way back to the NWA days, was poised now to return to rap after a tragic car accident that destroyed his vocal cords and a falling out with Death Row Records.
Helter Skelter would have had 1994 in a chokehold.
Yeah No question but if Eazy survived Dre likely would've taken concepts from the album and likely brought it to the N.W.A Reunion project
Dres been saying and not putting out records for 30 years . Brutal
Does producing em for the last 26 years not count ?
I remember when this album was supposed to come out. I was waiting patiently every week for it to drop at sound Warehouse . Too bad it never was. It probably would have been one of the best albums of the '90s
Me too. Inside the sleeve of my Chronic Album, or my Snoop album I cant remember which one now ? Had a coming soon Helter Skelter advert. So like you was always waiting for its release.
I always was waiting for that album think it was going to be called heltah skelta
@@GekoPish Yep, inside the Doggystyle cassette sleeve I remember seeing "Coming Soon - Dre Dre/Ice Cube." That would have gone down as an all time classic.
My pops till this day still talks about how he was ready for that album lol I remember being a kid going to sound waves with him asking did it come out when was it dropping lol I feel his pain.
Oh and I'm still waiting for this album to come out. Just not at sound Warehouse
Cube mentioned a few months back that Dre had agreed to produce his whole debut album but Eazy/Jerry axed it. He went to NY w/Bomb Squad and the rest was history. Now I wonder what a full Cube album with Dre cookin sounds like
It would sound like Natural born Killaz with doc writing all Dre verse
@@jonnykilroy9762 straight outta Compton..? 😂
@@descolabandz8855 not really. Dre got his trademarks but N4L and Nobody Does it Better don't sound the same as Straight Outta Compton. And those don't sound the same as Chronic and Doggystyle. Just curious where a solo Cube project woulda fit in this scale
No One Can Do it Better was a great album. Grand Finale had the whole NWA crew on it.
Dam Straight!!! one of the best hip hop albums ever made in my opinion
Helta Skelter from DOC IS DOPE!! I still take that album with me.
I love that album, too bad DOC himself hates it
In that interview they mentioned that the next single was "THEY CAN'T SEE ME" with George Clinton for HS. It was never released. When 2Pac made All Eeyz On Me, Suge had Dre's and Cube's vocals removed and Pac did his thing.
NWA was the best thing ever in rap music. Nothing can compare to them! I wish Eazy never died, and they were still making albums today
What a Damn shame. What could have been
Helter Skelter I wish that album came out!! Would have been crazy
100%. Dre was at his peak and coming up with some of his strongest beats. Cube’s rhymes were as sharp as ever, and with D.O.C. writing most of Dre’s parts, the original Helter Skelter could have been another West Coast classic
@@adarkerstandard exactly yo me that both them peaking!!
💯
I have always liked that first D.O.C album. Had no clue bout the history behind Helter Skelter. Hope you have another video cooking man! 👍
Here we go 🔥
Dre and Ice Cube's voice are special
Cant C Me(unheard)
Endonesia(unheard)
Gimme Fifty Feet(unheard)
Game Over(used on Scarface album)
All tracks that were recorded for this album
Can’t See Me was originally a Dogg Pound track that never made the Dogg Food album
@@dawgpound187 true but it is on the promo version of dogg food
Can't C Me (if I'm not mistaken, with the Can't See Us title) was originally a Dre & Cube song featuring George Clinton. That production was given to Tha Dogg Pound for their version, that eventually didn't make Dogg Food (1995) album. Then, it was given to 2Pac and was included on what became the All Eyez On Me (1996) double album. So, there's actually 3 versions of the song with 1 being officially released, 1 being leaked in poor quality, and the original take being unheard/unleaked. The production of that song goes back to 1993.🤷🏿♂️
I saw somewhere that gimme 50 feet became 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted
Also there are a couple instrumentals recorded that leaked. D.O.C basically used the concept for his own album of the same name
That oj clip was legendary
Yeah, I aint gonna lie to you if I was kind of hit it when that album. And come out because it was so much hype around him
Arabian Prince was first to leave NWA, followed by Cube
Of course, but to keep a more succinct pacing of the video I simply kept only what was the most necessary to sum up the NWA story. There’s plenty of details I could’ve included in that portion, but I felt it would’ve overshadowed the story of Helter Skelter if I dwelled upon it for too long. Let’s just say Ice Cube was the first key member to have left.
nice little doc (pun intended).natural born killers is a classic; I think one of Dre's best from that era. cube's verse goes soo hard.
i was aware of this song but I did not know the history of it so this was pretty interesting to me.. would have been great to get an album full of bangers like that, or if it had turned into an NWA album...eazy would sound dope over that bea
great job!
There’s a version of the song with a verse or two from Sam Sneed too.
I remember in the deathrow booklets of albums that were gonna come out. One of them was helter skelter by cube and dre. Never got released, shame.
I had the promo Tshirt and wore it to school in grade 8 and the principal made me take it off cause of the pot leaf 😆
Dope video also If you didn't notice Cube and N.W.A members still traded shots Post No Vaseline
When Will They Shoot has a slight jab (Cuz I Bust styles new styles standing strong while others run 100 Miles)
The Predator (He dissed Jerry Heller)
Dre dissed Cube throughout The Chronic
On Dre Day him and Snoop got at him on the end
Dre dissed him on Let Me Ride and Nuthin' But A G Thang
Kurupt also took some shots at Cube on Puffin On Blunts and Drankin Tanqueray
Ice Cube wss in the "Let Me Ride" video
And Da Lench Mob dissed him back on Guerrillas Ain't Gangsta track from the Menace II Society soundtrack
@@qcrepresenta734 the video was made after the album came out and by that time, they had squashed it, hence Cube's appearance to confirm that it was over.
@@carljohnson8997 Thank You
@@jl9602 Really I what diss was on Guerillas Ain't Gangstas?
I need a cube and Dr. Dre album
dr dre is still working on it, he's trying to make it perfect and is schedualed to drop in 2049
I'm getting tired of Dre working on albums that never get released. Dre hasn't produced anything memorable in years.
Mothafukas act like they forgot about dre lmao
Well, he did give us that project on GTA 5.
It was called the Fix or Contract
It's pretty good
I was just happy to hear some new Dre produced music
Lol you sound like 2 Pac😂😂
He just did a whole R&B record with Marsha Ambrosius called "Casablanco"...🤟🏾🛸👁️
Bruhhh I FORGOT ABOUT D O C SECOND ALBUM!!! 🤯🫡
It's been years since N.W.A. break up before Ice Cube started the Westside Connection group he & Dr.Dre plus Snoop Dogg could've been did an album together my opinion I think right now Ice Cube, Warren G, DJ Quik, & Dr.Dre should all come out with a group & album together they all can help produce the album in that order.......
I remember reading the source magazine and at the end it said coming in (whatever month it was) natural born killaz.i waited and waited and it never came out. I think that was the first time Dre got me on believing an album was coming out 😆
This doc album was tight AF !
I heard bout this project between the both of em and I was waiting fo it to drop but it didn't as we'll know
Dre would be living on the moon if he released a third of the projects he was rumored to. So much money and respect left on the table. "He won't be starving anytime soon".
I hear ya. 😒
Didn't the d.o.c put out an album with the same name but spelt differently as a jab to dre after he left death row
Yes. Also supposedly used a bunch of the beats and song concepts also.
The West coast sleeps on DJ Quik, Warren G, & Daz Dillinger, they produce a lot of rappers from coast to coast put some respect on their names if I was an rapper I'm the industry I'll get intouch with them producers with other producers as well.......
Other than Dr. Dre, what other West Coast producers get more props than Quick, Warren G, and Daz Dillinger? Those 4 producers were critical in the formation of West Coast rap.
@@butchvitoBattle Cat fool
Dre is not as good as people think he is if he put out all those albums people would have figured it out.
As much as I love his music, I reckon you might be kinda right. He also stopped producing all tracks on his albums and had other people do the beats
Well all the greats say he is great Quik, Daz, Premier to name a few
Dre hasn’t handled lone production since EFIL4ZAGGIN. It’s been daz sam sneed and Scott storch ever since
@@claudegrinnell9602 don't forget Mel-man he's dope asf !
And your point is....hell he helped other mfs eat.
I'M HATING THE MUSIC INDUSTRY THEY HOLD BACK SO MUCH STUFF
Their version was slated to be spelled “Heltah Skeltah.”
I definitely didn't see ice cube in the video of 'let me ride' I was definitely slipping on that one lol
Damn right it was a good day.
He says that as he is waling out of the bathroom with some ladies, picking his hair.
Iheard back then that a lot of the beats on 2 Pacs All Eyez On Me were mostly from the Helter Skelter sessions.
How?? When most of those beats were made by Johnny J, the other cats Waz Doug Rasheed, Devante, Rick rock,Bob Cat, QD3 and all these cats wazn't working with dre
@@paulchipulu9392 Yeah it didn't math with me either after looking into it more. But I do remember it being claimed or I wouldn't even repeat it. It could well of been in the ''Have Gun Will Travel'' Book. Can't recall the author now. But he was a Bodyguard or something back then. I agree with you. But that is something I remember reading back then. I can imagine California Love being a Dre and Cube track though. I have always been a fan of Dre, but was never really a fan of Ice Cube. Just didn't like his style, voice or his acting roles. So I am sure I would of loved Heltah Skeltah but Cube would of made it less likely for it to be like The Chronic or Chronic 2001. I even liked The Firm. Has anything from Heltah Skeltah ever been leaked ??
Best era. I loved the horror gfunck tracks. I think that was Dre’s influence because or the relapse album. My second favorite em album. Second to the first lp
Dr. Dre seems to give validation to the claim that he works slow
Imo Dre owe 3 people an album
Ice Cube for Helter Skelter
Kurupt when he was at his peak
The Last of Rage. I had never heard a woman with the ability to challenge men on the track.
I give Props to Brat, Boss & others, but Rage was HER!!
Dre also has his own album Detox somewhere hidden on the back burner and even DOC as well, i forgot what it was called but its another comeback album. But those two are working with Snoop on his Missionary album
Only song made was u cant c me. Which was later cut by dogg pound and later recut again with pac
I heard Pac on All Eyez On Me had a bunch of recycled beats
Dre dissed cube on the last verse on dre day
Big hutch said in his diss song to dre that he scared to diss ice cube
That's referring to him being scared or dissing him while in nwa and being talked into it.
Dre never truly forgave Cube for Dee Barnes
Dre never beat no dude like that
That's why Luke and tim dog and tweedy bird loc dissed him
Woulda been a nuke. Historical even.
In my opinion tho I think that Suge vetoed it cuz he wanted ice cube too sign wit death row and Cube wasn't wit it at all and they said that he bounced
Eazy E
RIP⚡
Overall this was really good. I do want to point out that you said .NWA didn't respond to Ice cube. But that's not true. They responded a few times. They They responded on Niggaz4life
The point I was making is that they didn’t really respond as NWA after No Vaseline.
You're correct @@adarkerstandard
Captions say "Healthy Skeleton"project. Haaaaaaa
Nice
Uh you failed to mention the U Cant C Me George Clinton featured song that was slated to be the follow up Dre & Cube single for Helter Skelter album. That song ended up on All Eyez on Me, with only 2Pac and George Clinton vocals.
They tired again early 2000s and it didn't come out.
That would of been hard .in the year fit that album .they would of had some good features mc eigh ,snoop Shaquille o Neal he was with the magic back than .Redman in Warren g in phife
I think you’re doing a huge disservice by saying only lasted a fairly short time. Because even nowadays when artists get hot, they might be hot for a second. They cool down and then they come back. They were hot for four years. That’s a long time to be hot without radio play so don’t downplay that aspect
Wasn’t done to downplay their success at all…if anything it’s a huuuuge credit to their absolute staying power to have built a such a powerful and lasting legacy in a group that was relatively short lived.
@@adarkerstandard I didn’t look at it from that angle. When you say it like that, I get what you’re saying. I just finished watching video I thought it was really good. I got a command you on this video because you had information in there that I have yet to hear about. And for me, N.W.A. was my introduction to rap. I was like in the fourth or fifth grade on the West Coast and to this day I still listen to it. I no longer live that lifestyle because I was a one of those kids that fell into that trap coming from single mother parenthood. But as an adult, I still think it’s some of the best music out there as far as rap, and it had been the first time West Coast rap had been featured like that. Along with N.W.A. E-40 and Too $hort around the same time I remember my mother forbid me to listen to their music which only made me listen to all them more lol. But hearing about the last album and some of those other details about The D.O.C. had never heard of and I’ve watched multiple documentaries or what not on N.W.A. so once again, I commend you on your research and this video
To this day you have artists whose albums never saw a day of light
Much appreciated, man! It was probably 2010-ish and I was in my early teens when I really dug in to hip-hop. I had always been exposed to it, but hearing the song Friday by Ice Cube at the end credits of the movie was a huge moment for me. I explored quite a bit and discovered so many artists, but the West Coast style has always been my favorite.
I was raised in a working class neighborhood and was never really exposed to the realities of that kind of life, but the music broadened my horizon and understanding of other ways of life, certain struggles I’ll never fully comprehend, and how important hip-hop was/is in bringing people together. To this day, I still feel no other works in hip-hop music can compare to the true creative peak it reached on the West Coast in the early to late 90’s.
Thanks for watching. I am actually in the writing process for a video on Westside Connection’s Bow Down record from 96. Stay tuned!
@@adarkerstandard man that’s always kind of been somewhat of a fascination of mine because like you said you grew up a lot differently from what described in that music and I come from the other end of the spectrum as well from you I mean. And I always wonder what the allure was, but the way you said, I completely understand me it’s the opposite. I’m more into country music down. You would never guess it by looking at me but yeah that’s what I’m into now I mean, I still listen to all I consider the gold of hip-hop in the 90s when I grew up and I can’t really listen to the newer stuff. I don’t even really consider that wrap but. Once again, you did a great job.
Helter skelter
So Easy and Dre where both gay?
Anything Dr. Dre gets canceled.
Lmfao... most of your so called facts are all wrong and out of order!
