  • A restoration team in Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre is trying to reach the original surface where Jesus' body was laid.
Many historians have long believed that Jesus' cave tomb was obliterated, but an archaeologist says ground penetrating radar has discovered cave walls intact behind the shrine's marble walls.
The restoration team broke through to find a more ancient marble slab, with a whitish layer underneath. Jesus' burial slab may be deeper still.
On Thursday the workers cut a window in one of the chamber walls so pilgrims will be able to glimpse, for the first time, a part of the limestone wall thought to be the actual tomb of Jesus.
A 12th-century building sitting on 4th-century remains, the Church of the Holy Sepluchre is the only place where six Christian denominations practice their faith at the same site. It is one of Christianity's oldest churches and one of its most important shrines.
