    I had the same problem a couple winters ago. about 3 feet of snow outside and my bathroom started spraying water! BAD! My wife and I dug forever in the snow. Water company could not find it. I finally went on google earth and saw its location from summer time. . I now put a car tire over it in winter. I also added a shut off to main water inside the house.

    I worked 16yrs for Darlington county SC water department. You need to look at the meter in the box. Whether its digital or has a analog gauge if you are not using water you shouldn't see the gauge or digital numbers going up. For your bill to go up it has to run through the meter. A leak before the meter is a leak but don't go through the meter. Its a leak and the water department needs to fix it but won't effect your bill. Good to see you video after a while!

    • @DoingItCheap
      @DoingItCheap  3 месяца назад

      The big leak is on them and not near my meter. Apparently if you leave a busted water hose running over 12 hours, your bill goes up. The leak detector was not moving on my meter.

    My water meter needed replaced after 20 years and some hot young cutie came out to replace it. The vault was buried in front of a landscaped island and she found it in 15 minutes using her metal detector. It just goes to show you that you can't judge a book by It's cover.

  • @CurtisHarrison-g2t
    @CurtisHarrison-g2t 3 месяца назад +1

    You'll have to dig out around that box,gently near the bottom.
    Was it wet in that housing?
    Their is a coupling threaded into the meter. They usually leave a couple of rubber o rings hung on a wire. It goes out the same. If it is leaking coming in,its on them. If it's leaking on the out,it's on Papaw.
    I've done a bit of this work. Usually the water leads directly to the problem. Whowever,if they have housed the line in plastic, it will lie to you.
    Hope you get it straightened out.

    • @DoingItCheap

      Sorry for a canned response, but I copied this off the internet. They explain it better than I do.....
      The process involves capturing water consumption data via sensors or transmitters installed in the meters, which then communicate the data to utility companies through various communication networks such as radio frequency, cellular, or satellite links.
      It is their leak, not mine. I think 12 hours of a busted water hose running was the reason for my triple bill.

    I had a water bill like that. Turned out the water heater (electric) had gone bad with a leak. Also. turned out the guy who built my house (jack leg electrician) built it without a ground rod. But he used the cold water line as a common ground for the box (even though it was itself "ungrounded." ) There were 3 unattached, burnt out water heaters in the crawl space. =The joker could not figure out the problem. He left it for me...

    Yep, to get that kind of bump in your water bill, it had to go through the meter. Now if they estimate water consumption based on historical data, that might be a periodic adjustment to get it right and current. But if it’s leaking on their side of the meter, you can bet they’ll be all over the issue! 👍

    I knew that meter had to be out close to the road. It has to be within the easement so they can legally have access to it without the landowner's permission. What if you had a fence there with a no trespassing sign on it? My In-Laws once had a water bill around $100 when it was normally about $30. The problem turned out to be that they had a small shop building way out back that was rarely used, but it had water run to it and a toilet. The float on the toilet had gotten stuck or something happened to it so that it was constantly running water.

    Paw Paw, got my water and trash bill was 50.00 and handwritten in red ink was leak. Called city they pumped the pit 3 times. Of course on my side, the pit they put in was on the water line to house with 6 hose clamps. City dug it up and did most all the work for free, but had me call a plumber. The plumber was here the next morning with a little back hoe and could not cut thru tree roots. City had taken out 2 pieces of sidewalk the night before and ended up taking out pit and told plumber what are you going to use to fix it. Plumber said two options and City guy said well “it’s your train Jesse!” Got the bill 1001.88. The joys of home ownership. Tried to pay in cash, hoping it be cheaper, said he like to, but his wife was an accountant and stopped all his play money.
