The performance issues are because I used the pure C version of the source without the assembly optimisations - might be trivial to re-add them if someone wanted to put the time into it (and fix a few UI issues, etc). I'd love to know if there's some kind of documentation for that mercury switch on the driver disks, I have ideas for how to make it switch orientation at runtime (I'd need a spare weekend and more beer...) Huge fan of the channel, and I'm glad this made your week :)

Actually videos with inherently vertical content are best shot in portrait. It also increases watchability for mobile users in that context, since phones like to be held vertical, and fullscreen keeps its orientation with vertical videos, while horizontal flips between 90 and 0 when going for comments. On PC and tv it's a little awkward if it's any more that 3:4 vertical. 9:21 on pc/tv is ridiculous. But 3:4 is quite serviceable

@@HappyBeezerStudios I would imagine that most will scale perfectly fine. You need to remember that the video card doubles the resolution before it is sent to the monitor, so half the scaling process is the same as viewing on a CRT.
If it can be done on an oscillioscope, if it can be done in super ultrawide on a mac touchbar, if it can be run on a car, then somebody will port it to a WWII navy computer

I was seeing posts about "Tate Doom" as it was happening on twitter, so I'm stoked to see this video so soon! What a cool development this whole thing has been.
Not only is this awesome because... it just is, and props to the coder for doing such a good job so quickly, but the more I watch the more I think "This is absolutely how DOOM should be!" A follow-up with Quake I-III if possible on your portrait mode TFT and of course a higher-spec machine would be wonderful.
This makes it look like a homebrew version of Doom for Nokia phones, specifically the N-Gage. Except bigger screen, better gameplay and not having to use the N-Gage's phone buttons

I had a collegue at the place where I worked with delphi development say to me that I was likely the last person to stop developing for symbian LOL. I held on to my nokia e72 far longer than I should have. After way too long, I finally joined the dark side and sold my soul to Google and got a samsung galaxy s3 to replace it. These days I am rocking a unihertz titan as it reminds me of the e72.
Joe Redifer, over on Game Sack, would yell "TATE MOOOOOOOODE!" when there are games in portrait mode. He pronounces tate as "tate" instead of "tah-tay"

Not bad for a quick turnaround. That's some good coding! Also, i knew getting a mount that lets me rotate my monitor would be 100% worth it for something! Even if the "newer" way means changing the display manually.
Tbh, I'm diggin the portrait video idea for this. It's more relaxing to watch for some reason. Similar to tiktok but the run time is no comparison. Might have to incorporate this feature in more of my content.
I took some inspiration from some of these portrait monitor videos and stuck one of our old 19" Dell UltraSharp monitors in portrait next to my 24" 16:10 monitors. Works great for Teams/Skype and not bad for RUclips either in theatre mode. For this video, I just had to full screen it and enjoy the full resolution!

Wow, that was amazingly quick! I love the lore addition for it situation :D I remember the phone Doom game, a friend of mine had it on his phone and showed me once. It looked like a old school dungeon crawler, you took steps one block at a time or something like that... It was a long time ago, I don't remember much. 13:15 - hehe, cute Doom figure ther :)

It pretty much already is. If it can, someone will figure out how to run doom on it. From copiers to pregnancy tests and many devices in between.

You can use an old lcd on a dos pc and tilt the display

I have a 4k portrait monitor next to my landscape one for gaming. Always useful to watch full screen portrait video which I like the look of.
