Aug. 19, 2019 | Abby O'Neill -- Hailing from the southwest region of Houston and of Nigerian descent, Tobe Nwigwe made his Tiny Desk debut a family affair, with an entourage that included his seven-week old daughter. The baby was in the arms of Tobe's wife, Fat, known for her striking beauty and lead role in the magnificently directed music videos that have paved the way to Tobe's rapid growth on Instagram.
Baby Fat shared the stage with Tobe's exclusive producer and emcee, LaNell "NELL" Grant, band members and backup singers who, like soldiers in arms, performed a tight, orchestrated and musically rich set. If there were any doubters in the office, they were quickly won over.
Tobe's performance was a five-song medley sandwiched effortlessly into a 15-minute block. Launching with "Houston Tribute," he used clever and evocative wordplay to rap about coming of age in the South. Accented almost hypnotically by a trio of harmonies provided by background vocalists Luke Whitney, David Michael Wyatt and Madeline Edwards, Tobe's mindful words are like a life hack for those seeking guidance. Throughout the set he offered pleas for listeners to look past inherent hardships and evil and to keep their eyes on the prize, while he reflected on his own decision to go against his Nigerian roots and parental expectations to pursue his dreams of being a rapper.
And through it all, young Baby Fat sat silently in her mom's arms, absorbing the spiritual energy of her dad's music.

Yahweh = Hebrew name for God. So he's saying while FAT (whom I'm fairly certain is his wife) may not have the baddest (bad meaning good) body of them all, she can call on God and get a response faster than the average (which is far more important...depending on how you living).
1mrgainey 🗣far more important!!

I’ve followed this brotha and his wife for about a year or two. I love how he professes his love of God his wife and culture. I’m so glad the world is finally taking note. He spits straight knowledge and his crew is just as 🔥 🔥 🔥 🥰🥰🥰
😃😍
Word about being glad the world is taking notice. I've been into them since like '16 and they just make me so inspired and hopeful. I tell everyone about Nwigwe.
And I'm not one of these guys that will trash the rest of the hip hop scene, I love hip hop and I think we're in a golden era of the underground (even though a lot of the really popular stuff is garbage), but I really crave and yearn for more faith in this music (to be fair if you look for it you'll find lots of rappers love Christ, and allude to it in their music, but obviously in the big leagues it's not fashionable to be so open about that, and I hope more folks are inspired by Tobe to go against the grain and tap into that well - point is though it's a message that is alive and well whether it's obvious to us or not).
And I gotta hand to you Americans - it seems only Americans are able to make giving glory to Christ really cool. Whether it's hip hop like this, Americana, alt country, folk, R&B, soul, gospel - us folks from the rest of the world are real thankful that Americans (mostly Americans from the south let's be honest) are out there giving us proper Christian music.
TOTALLY AGREE MY SISTER!!!

Those backup singers ain't no backup material tho. They deserve an album of their own.
HonestComment The blessed thing is that they know their part and play it well for the bigger picture. If one succeeds, than they all succeed.
I think Tobe knows that. Which could be why he made sure to say their full artist names before each of them sung, to give them the proper exposure.
NELL does have an album on Spotify and other music
They all have their own projects

Idk how tobe hasn't been in the top 5 at least. He's been speaking truth for years now
Im obsessed with these background singers
This is MUSIC in its purest form. Spoken word, jazz, spiritual, hip hop, melodies. What more could you ask for!!
No profanity or negativity in these lyrics. Inspirational and good vibes all the way. I'm here for all of this.
Tobe's authenticity is one of the reasons why I respect his craft. He's a true artist and a generational influencer. ✨
1. Lyrics on point. You can tell his flow is heavily influenced by Outkast.
2. She snapped on her verse.
3. Vocalists were smooth as silk and sweet as molasses.
That is all ❤
Not just OutKast but the whole southern rap culture in general, Texas to be exact. He shouts out a few thru out his set.
I peeped the OutKast references too.

It's like the 2021 version of Bob Marley and The Wailers... When I watch them perform I be grinning so wide!
Dammit every single one of those backup singers could have albums of their own 🔥🔥🔥
They do.... or at least their own tracks and aspirations. Good movement in each.

I keep coming back to this masterpiece.
A visceral, spiritual experience. This is my 1st time listening & gut reaction, in my soul. This is what racial reconciliation looks like, in any context. Music is universal. Peep how everybody just played their part and vibed in unity because what's understand ain't gotta be explained when a person speaks their truth in the affirmation of self-awareness + self-actualization. This is so beautiful. A timeless monument to a moment in time. Blessed work. Truly.
I feel like the bass player ain't getting enough love in these comments. Man was killing it.
You totally red my mind. Camera was more in love with the keyboard while man killing the guitar.
Could be as a result of corrupt footage tho. Filmmakers relate
He killing it...straight swagged out!
My father plays the bass for his gospel group...so I'm always on it in other songs.
He murdered it!
After reading your comment and pushing my earpod in a little deeper, I hear what you're saying. 🙂
This is Hip Hop.....progressive, expressive, poetic and jammin'. Hip Hop is a baby from Jazz so it should have always been a variation of this. Dope with uplifting thought provoking messages to grow the listener not mind fuck the babies into thinking it's cool to be a junkie and just blame it on your mental health and how depressed you are....while THEY collect checks from all the impressionable kids buying into their B.S. They scared to direct them to the Universe....to a higher power....to something that gave them naturally unique powers.....the secret is....we ALL have a super power....once you discover it....TRULY discover it....nothing stands in the way....but the devil is always working so that you don't have the time, energy, patience or confidence to discover who you really are....Hip Hop has to make being smart...cool to the kids...period...
