Just saw that drip edge at hd today when looking for flashing from wall sheathing to porch. Asked the worker if I could use it for this purpose, he didn't know. Nice to see you implementing a thought I had after I thought it. Makes me hope I'm on the right page. Trying to do things as right as I can. Edit: I will try to shingle house wrap onto the flashing or maybe tape if I need to.

It explains many issues I've seen. I wish I was this aware when I bought it in 1998 with the deck they had just added to the house. Oh well. I will watch the rest now to see what to ask about when we have it replaced.

Definitely true.. just helped my brother replace a new sliding door on the back of his house. House sits on a slab with a small porch that was previously installed. Once we took the old slider off the ledger board was against the siding and water destroyed the framing of the slider and a couple feet of joists and floorboard inside.

This is the first pro video I've seen where the ledger is placed entirely underneath the Tyvek, rather than the usual method of applying waterproof tape under the ledger, possibly with shims over that to allow water a pathway to trickle down behind the ledger without getting trapped. I can see the appeal, although it means the joist hangers will produce hundreds of extra holes in the Tyvek, and the contact between the end of each joist will be tight against the Tyvek. Waterproof tape is gaining traction for use over the top of each joist and to help seal screw holes, and installed with a shingle pattern should be as good.

  • @dougk1533

At 3:10, you install the drip edge over the Tyvek wrap. If you visualize a drop of water traveling down the Tyvek-wrapped wall from above, it may run down the front of the drip edge and then be deflected away from the structure. However, it is more likely that the water would pass behind the drip edge through any gaps and continue down the Tyvek.
Would it have been better practice to place a piece of Tyvek behind the drip edge, extending a few inches-perhaps 6 inches-above the top of the drip edge? Then, the larger piece of Tyvek covering the wall could be positioned above the drip edge, overlapping it in a shingled manner. This approach would ensure that any drops of water coming down the Tyvek are diverted by the drip edge, with the added protection of the additional Tyvek underneath.

My suggestion is to provide additional deck footings and columns along the building approx. 1 or 2 feet from the face of the house. This will provide a separate and independent structure for deck and house. There will be no ties to the house therefore no water getting into the house. It may cost a couple hundred bucks but a safer way.

    • @khanarch1

@@josiahutah3712 I'm a licensed architect for 30 years. If you make the deck independent from the house, you don't have to worry about future problems which may occur in your house. But make sure to install braces between deck columns depending on height in order to prevent lateral movement.

Someone added a covered deck (much lower than the one in this video, it actually has garden landscape timber I'm pretty sure) to our early 80's model house that has wood siding. The roof part where they have corrugated plastic for a roof wasn't attached properly and allowed water to run down the siding and water damaged a window and it leaks as well. Would this be the same thing needed? Just cut into the T1 11 (guessing that's what it is), remove extra to add that plastic and reattach? Or do you have a video for this that I've missed?

if you want to anchor your entire deck in posts you can. this allows you to reduce the number of posts and save money as well. Cheers!

How do you redo a garage apartment deck when the exterior is stucco? The apartment is on the second floor and the wood deck is rotting. Not the ledger board but I don’t want to have to do it again so I’m using Trex. How do you devert re seal the ledger board correctly again? I want to make storage under it.

use deck joist tape to seal the ledger. and then rebuild using joist hangers!

I used $15 joist tape to tape behind and on top of the ledger board. Tape should start from bottom to top and use round edge of the cutted deck board to give it some pressure after taping.

Hello. This is an unrelated question. Some fixer uppers are money pits and others have good bones and simply require updating. What are key features to look for in a existing home? Not a flipper, just do not desire to be house poor for retirement. God bless.

Jeff you nailed the J trim tight i thought siding nails were never nailed tight to the vinyl???

    • @lancejohnson1040
      @lancejohnson1040 4 года назад

That is only for the vinyl siding, so it can move with the expansion and contraction from heat and cold. That is why there are horizontal slots in the siding. Nail in the center of the slot and keep the nail 1/8"- 1/4" out

I put my ledger over my housewrap and then redguard it. And I redguard the top of the joists. Waterproof and separate from the house.

While your at it, make sure your siding lines up and is the same level on the corners

This comment has absolutely nothing to do with decks or ledger boards, but I swear your hair is a beautiful white when you're outside!
And it's white in all the right places the way it wraps around your head and sits on your chin!
But just to be polite.... Thank you for the video, Jeff! 😁

What is it that you would do with the ledger board now that the decks in place and finished. Are you covering they ledger board in siding in between each joist? My deck was installed slashed right up against the siding seems like a tough job to correct it if already messed up.

can be but if you remove a couple of boards you have access if needed. Cheers!

Just helped my neighbor with this issue. We built a supporting wall to hold up the deck. Then we removed the old ledger and replaced it properly with a new one. Then we re-attached the deck to the new ledger.
