A tip that I learned is to take the respiration rate while you still have your fingers on their pulse, that way they just assume your taking their HR and are breathing normally. I also sometimes say to them “I’m just going to be quiet for a minute while I take your pulse” and this usually prompts them not to start a conversation as your a concentrating 🤗 but you’re right, it can be so easy to lose where you are up to sometimes 🤦🏻♀️😂
Oh, yeah I did then when I was in community last year. However, when I'm on the wards we use machines so I can't do that then. That's what I meant. That's a good idea. Maybe I'll say that next time I have to do a manual pulse 😊
@@BeingLouisa We do manual pulses at times too so you can feel the pulse i.e. is it thready or bounding plus you can also still say you are having a feel of their pulse
I’m only a freshman in high school but midwifery is something I seriously think I’d be interested in
Starting midwifery in September 😊 I'm so scared but I'm hoping for the best
Good luck for September! You'll do great 💕
Good luck!
I was going to start in September but it got pushed back a year

@@BeingLouisa thank you!! ❤️
I’m only 11 but I really, really would like to do something with babies. I love this video, thank you so much, I really appreciate you making these videos. 🥰☺️
I'm 13 and I as well want to do something with babies, I'm so happy there is someone else that has a similar interest as me! :)
Monica Sanchez awh yay it’s not just me I’m now 12! It was my birthday April 27th my. My friend wants to be a pediotricion I didn’t spell that correctly! 😂💗
Lily Cainer what do you wanna be?
Monica Sanchez idk probably a midwife! :)
xlily.angelx, that’s a wonderful job! I hope you don’t give up on your dreams! :)
Hiya, my name is Katie. I'm only 16 years old and my long term aspiration is to become a midwife. I'm currently in the last of secondary school and next am hoping to move on to a new medical school in my area to study health and social care and then follow it up with a midwifery course at university. I just wanted to know the insides and outs of the career and how much you enjoy the job; what the job really requires you to do and well whats it all about really. You sound like such a loving person so I guess you are the perfect role for midwifery... I love your videos they are very helpful, thank you!! XXX
Aww, thank you! You sound like you have a plan to get there which is great. There is a lot to midwifery and it all depends on where you will be training and working but it requires you to be patient and kind, to be knowledgeable and understanding. You will be doing long hours and sometimes you will be worked off of your feet. Sometimes you will feel like you’ll never know enough because more people are getting pregnant who have higher risk factors and complications that wouldn’t have been able to get pregnant in the past. It’s stressful but it’s worth it xx
Good luck with your GCSES!! Good luck with everything, I’m only 14 and in year 9 but I want to be a midwife xx
Me too except I’m almost 17 and I’m not going to graduate high school until I’m 19 due to disability
@@jessfrost6573 i have my gcse's in 2 months im literally soo stressed!
Thank you so much for this video, I'm really interested in midwifing and your video has really helped.

Congratulations!! I'm so happy the videos could help. Good Luck for September 💕
Great video. I am very interested in becoming a midwife and I know now what comes with it. Thank you Louisa
I want to become a midwife. But I’m scared if I’m not gonna be able to spend time w my family or have time for myself. Do u have time for yourself? And is it fun to be a midwife?
As long as you make time for yourself then yes you have time to do things. You would have to define fun
I am an old midwife, and time with family can be cut short when you are on call, same thing with time for yourself if you do not have a backup, so no, family life is not fun when your mind is on dashing off to attend to a woman in labor who you are responsible for and the family 'feels' it. This is not a job, it is a commitment so do not take this lightly just because you want to 'become' a midwife, What do you hope to 'offer' pregnant/laboring women?
@@deborahamilton5491 I am sophomore in college, and doing pre-reqs. This is one of the things that always make me doubt the profession, I want time for family. Do you know how does being a Labor and Delivery Nurse is? How do your shifts/schedule work? What does being "on call" mean? Do you think you could give me your email so we could talk (if you have time)? I've been trying to find more information about the profession around here in my local area by probably volunteering or trying to do a job shadow, but nobody gets back to me, sadly. Probably because of the current situation in the world right now.
@@durazno6897 I’m a freshman doing my prereqs. Let me know what you find out! It would be nice to talk! Email me. Or send me contact info
@@durazno6897 there’s a group known as maternity mates where you can volunteer and support birth next one starting April and last fir three months or so so call then Asap ,good luck.

I'm a 3rd year Mid student and all of these points are so true!
Hey Luisa I started watching you last year when I started my access course. So far I have 2 uni offers for midwifery which I am extremely happy for. I just wanted you to know that your video very extremely helpful for UCAS,access course and midwifery related. Thanks

Thank you sister, HI from a student midwife from Palestine :)
I love this video! Thanks for all the tips & tricks for when starting uni😁 I'm soon to be a student midwife starting this September! I'm super excited! Do you have anymore tips or good to know things before I start?
Good luck!! Just take it in
Interesting to hear your perspective and feeling emotionally drained by the job because I perceive it as being a career that will emotionally fulfill me
It can be emotionally fulfilling at times but then sometimes (just like when you’re supporting a friend or loved one who is going through something) it can be emotionally draining if you are there for that person giving them all you have. It’s only happened a couple of times but it still happens
Im 16 and I recently started getting interested in midwifery. I’ve always wanted to do something with babies. Im about to graduate from high school but I just dont know the steps i have to take to get to that point. Like what school major? What degree do i need? Stuff like that i feel like no one really teaches you.
Areyou based in the UK or the US?
Thank you so much
I'm starting midwifery this coming August. I'm so freaking nervous and scared too. Good luck to me 🙏🙏🙏
I’m sure you’ll be fine. Good luck anyway!
@@BeingLouisa Thanks
I love your personality! 👌🏻
Aww, thank you!!
If you’re a little shy but can sometimes be confident would you advise to do midwifery (is it a grower)?
I’m a final year student midwife, finishing in a few months and I never thought I was shy until I started midwifery. When I spoke to the women I use to be so worried that I would say the wrong thing and that my mentors would judge that I never wanted to talk I just wanted to observe. After speaking to mentors about it and asking for support they really helped me to come out of my shell and I have grown so much. Don’t think because you’re shy you can’t do this, it’s an incredible journey and amazing job role just be vocal about how you’re feeling and don’t keep it to yourself.
Emily Williams thank you so much for the reply! I won’t let it put me off! :)
I'm doing my Bachelor's in Nursing atm. This is one type of nurse I am considering to specialize as.

im currently studying nursing at the moment for a year and am hoping to transfer to midwifery.Midwifery is my passion ive had my heart set on that job since seccondary year in highschool.Im studying nursing now and love it but i really want to work with women and help bring beautiful babies and joy to mothers
I wish you the best then on getting through nursing school and then transferring to midwifery
Hi Louisa! I start Midwifery in September is there any essential things you think I should buy?
Hey, if you're talking the small things I actually have a gift box for sale at www.beinglouisa.co.uk/shop it has some of the essentials for placement. If you're talking big things I believe I have a video on it, however, it would include notebooks, black pens, a good bag for uni and for placement, and shoes for placement
What uni do you go to? I’m kinda stressed because I’ve sent my application for primary teaching however I’m still finding it hard to decide if I want to do midwifery as I always did feel I want to do it but I had more than one careers in mind! Anyways I love how honest you are keep being amazing! 😍❤️🙏✅
I’m at Kingston university. Try to get some type of experience in the area. I always say if you’re not sure try to volunteer in a hospital on a maternity ward. Thank you 💕
I'm currently working towards becoming a primary school teacher and I'm seriously considering changing to do midwifery! x
I'm applying for midwifery college. Hope I get accepted I really want to be a midwife!!
Good luck!
Brenda Buenrostro good luck! ☺️💞
Is there a test you have to do to enter the course? Like how med students have to do ucat or bmat?
You have to do an interview and then a maths and English test to get onto the course
I'm in year 11 about to do my tests to get my grades fir gcses I'm considering becoming a midwife but I'm not sure
i say don’t stress it i just changed my career paths in the end of yr12 and it’s all possible (as long as you take the right A levels) i’m still trying to decide between midwife or nurse but there’s always different opportunities to train into a certain career x
23 years old and I am about to start applying to start with a pre health course first
Good luck!
One VERY important question, do I have to be able to do math well when I go into the nursing major? Because I am HORRIBLE at math.
Not really. To get into midwifery you have to be good with maths for the entrance exams but otherwise as long as you can do drug calculations you're good.
@@BeingLouisa Are the entrance exams hard ?x
hallé vallis as far as I know as I’ve looked into it you need a grade C on maths English and science and have two other C grade subjects. But that’s for Britain I assume it’s similar in America or wherever you come from but That’s all I know 😊
Hey!
I’m 12 and this year I choose my options for my GCSEs
I choose 3 (one for y.9,one for y.10 and one for y.11)
In my school Science Maths English is NECESSARY and we have to do them,no choice
But what 3 should I chose to help me get into midwifery? xx
I was thinking child care and 2 others, but what other two? xx
Lia Plunkett health and social care is needed and is best doing level 3 (: ( triple health and socialcare )
but if u want to do child care aswell then u can just do level 2 health and social
chels x thank you so much!! :)
Is midwifery a hard course, cause I’m doing a btec health and social care and I was wondering if it would be a hard transition for me!
It is hard because you’re doing a degree as well as being on placement. I’m not sure how you will find it transitioning because I don’t know what a btec is like. But if it’s like my access course then the first year shouldn’t be too hard. Here’s a video I did that should be helpful for you: ruclips.net/video/1V0igMTuYc4/видео.html
Being Louisa the btec is 3 days of school work (coursework no exams) being done and one day of placement, plus we have to complete our coursework outside school hours
Everyone is different but that sounds like you shouldn’t have too much trouble transitioning into the first year of midwifery
Do you have to go university to become a midwife? Are there any learning and doing exams and stuff in any collages and learning while watching or on the job kinda thing?
Also do you need specific GCSEs?
From what I know you do have to go to university to become a midwife. I know they were thinking about a midwifery apprenticeship but I have no idea if they are still going ahead with that
for most of high school i wanted to be an accountant but recently i’ve took an interest in midwifery however my school didn’t let me take triple science (biology chemistry and physics separate) because they made me take french so i don’t know if that will affect my chances 🤔
jiminspoom should have chosen health and social care :(
chels x that wasn’t a choice of mine but hospitality was however i didn’t really know what i wanted to be when i was choosing :/
That should still be fine as long as you did some sort of science
Being Louisa i’m actually trying to get moved because im not learning anything science but thanks for that :)
you’ll need two a levels preferably 1 science (bio).
hi i’m jess, I am doing my gcses next year. I have good predicted grades and my biggestu ambition is to become a midwife. i’m not too sure where life will take me, but all I want is to follow my dream and work with mother’s and their children. Child birth is a truly wonderful thing to experience and to work with it would be amazing
Go for it!
As of right now when i go back to school after this whole covid situation i will be complete my final year of high school and do all my GCSE's. I really want to do midwifery and have heavily looked into it but im not sure if i can do it. Im mainly concerned about what grades i have to get and what course i should take when in collage, anybody got any advice?
Look at university websites and see what they require. Usually for GCSE you need a C or above/whatever the equivalent is. As for college, biology is a good start.
Hi,i want to do midwifery but am going to do access to midwifery this September, what should i do? How do i start my journey to become a midwife and how do i get into the university.
I'm sorry I don't quite understand. You can still do midwifery next year if you do an access course this year.
To answer the second part of your question, here's a link (ruclips.net/video/1aGsOsLBqLA/видео.html) to a video I did explaining the different steps that happen to become a student midwife. I hope it helps!
SUBSCRIBED!!! IM a nurse assistant from holland. im really thinking abt starting a midwifery course, reading these comment looks like im going to do an acces course first. :D looking forward to watch your videos nd learn more
Oh I'm so happy for you!
Hi I’m a year 13 student and I got my first interview for midwifery next January
I’m really really nervous and scared because it’s such a competitive course
Do you have any tips and what to expect in the interview
I actually did a video about interview tips not that long ago. Here's the link ruclips.net/video/pZc0pshIp-o/видео.html

I’m thinking of applying for a level 3 BTEC extended diploma in health and social care to follow on to do a degree in midwifery. I have a daughter who’s nearly 2 years old in November, will I possibly be able to be a midwife and also have some time for my daughter on days off?
Definitely! There are loads of mums n my cohort. They do have to make it a point to spend time with their children when essays are due but it is definitely something that can be done!
Btw have you been using your stethoscope? I’m starting my course soon and thinking of buying one but not sure if you actually get to use it.
Hey, yes I have used it. I use it very often when I'm on the wards
Being Louisa thanksx
No problem x
Being Louisa pls how is d exams like pls I need to knw
Hey, love your channel, can't stop watching! Aspiring midwife here. Just wondering what you studied at Sixth Form? Thanks :))
Hey, thank you. I didn't chose my options based on midwifery so what I did I wouldn't suggest it 🙈
Would you need to do a science when doing a level to do midwifery?
I'm 38 and looking at starting midwifery. Not sure if I'm too old but always wanted to do it and not had the guts.
You are NOT too old! You can do it if you want to and can do the hard work
I heard that becoming a midwife means taking 12 hour shifts, is that true? Because that is basically my entire day and i want to have time to myself and don't know if I am up for that.
Yeah we do 12.5 hour shifts. Day or night :)
Why do you only have 3 weeks off during the summer? Is it a placement or something, because I’m a history student and I’ve always had 3 months off during the summer so I’m just intrigued as to why your summer is cut short? I’m also contemplating studying midwifery once I finish uni but I’m still not sure
Yeah it’s because we are on placement a lot
I have a question, do you need chemistry to be a midwife? Because I really hate chemistry, and if not what science should I take? (I’m in high school btw)
I don’t believe so. I would mostly say you need Biology
Hey! I’m really intersect in midwifery and I’m doing biology and childcare for gcse, but I don’t know if that’s all I need, what subjects do you need? x
At GCSE you definitely need Maths and English but for A Levels every university has different requirements and are looking for different things. What subjects you should do and the grades you need you can find on all of the university websites. It's best if you look at them x
Being Louisa thank you x
I was just wondering if it’s good pay? Because I’ve always wanted to be a midwife but I don’t want to be stuck in a low paid job for the rest of my life?❤️
Hey, it's okay pay. When you work in the NHS you really have to love what you do more than money. The average newly qualified midwife could earn anywhere from £23,000 to £30,000 depending on where you are working and at what band/pay grade
Being Louisa okay thanks because I’m in year 9 and am picking my options 💕
Being Louisa i heard it was about 100k?
I’m sorry but that’s not true in the UK. Not even at a band 7 would you get that. It’s more around £27K to £32K depending on where you work
@@karinau838 haha can you actually imagine! What part of the world are you from? I need to be there
I'm in grade 11 and want to be a midwife. Hope this will help❤
Do you have to do health and social care gcse to be a midwife?
No you don’t. However, you do need to do biology or at least double science GCSE
How did you know that you would be able to handle the responsibility that comes with the job? I am really considering starting but nervous about that part.
That is an amazing question. I didn't know. Sometimes it still hits me that I am responsible to some degree when/if bad things happen
Hello, Would it be better to apply for an apprenticeship rather than a full time midwifery student?
I don't know how the midwifery apprenticeship works so I couldn't give you an answer for that. I did the degree and I got a job
Is there a different between a nurse midwife and a midwife??
Haley Rose yes, a nurse midwife is a Nurse(finished medical school) that in addition has had midwifery training, nurse midwifes work mostly in hospitals and birthing center. Midwives usually don’t have nurse training but are certified as midwives and they can work in homes, personally hired by people or they sometimes work in birthing centers as well
Cate Saffer which one is easier? Nurse midwife or midwife
Cate Saffer which one do u spend more time at home?
Hey, I have an offer to do midwifery at the ONLY uni I want to go to. Just worried if I don't get my B in biology that they wont take me! DOD you do A-levels? And what did you get?
I did do A-Level but they were for when I wanted to do Photography in uni. I then did an Access to HE course and I was a couple of distinctions short of what my ONLY midwifery offer wanted but they still accepted me. Most unis will still accept you if you are only a grade off as they need to fill their quota. You can also apply through clearing if you need to
@@BeingLouisa that's good news, thank you! I'm doing my best but I might end up with a C rather than a B in biology despite my efforts :(
What did you study for 6th form to do midwifery I'm starting it next months please can you tell me.i was going to do health and social Care

Good luck! You sound like you'd be lovely as a midwife
do you get paid for your placement?
No. You have to take out a student loan
How Is the salary in the UK? Do they make respectable income ?
Hey, it's not a lot here. The average newly qualified midwife could earn anywhere from £23,000 to £30,000 depending on where you are working and at what band/pay grade
So that's it mean that if you want to become a midwife u can't get enough time to take care of your family? because of the night shift😢
What are the requirements to study nursing if you are from Kenya and if you studied Community Health and development
I'm sorry I wouldn't know as I'm a student midwifery. Maybe try to look up some universities on google and then email them to ask
Hi I love the tips thank you so much
Do you need to do science to become a midwife?
How long dose it take to become a midwife?
I'm a 13 year, i dont know what to become im thinking about real estate agentcy, medicine doctor or a midwife. Im doing okay in school im not the best also not the worst. I dont know what i should conceder researching about but i hope i can be succesfull one day.
It’s good to have options. I wasn’t always the best in school but if you try in class and do your homework and always try to learn something, you should be able to do whatever you want to do. You still have time to find what interests you! 💕

No you will need more than that. Look at university website for alternatives you may need
Hey I loved this video! I'd double thumbs if I could
For UK residents it’s the normal £9,250 a year for the degree. Which is a 3 year degree here in the UK
2:14 i was laughing so much 😂😂
My first year in midwifery school what am I supposed to do
Learn as much as you can from your teachers. Observe everything. Make notes. Ask questions
Do you know what age you have to be to start midwifery (I'm 12) I have always wanted to be a midwife because I love baby's and I have always watched one born every minute to try and teach myself before I am old enough to start and I think that its 4 years but idk. And is there lots of written work because I'm not that good at writing I am a very messy writer and not that smart x
(Btw I'm homeschooled so can I still be a midwife?)
You have to be at least 18 to start university. One born every minute isn’t the best representation of midwifery. Watch the BBC series The Midwives. they used to have it on RUclips. They 2 episodes on being a student midwife that are great to watch to get a better understanding.
Also, you have 6 years to get better at writing, which you’ll need to because there’s a lot of paperwork
Wowww my name's Louisa too and I want to become a midwife when I leave school!!!
It's so rare for me to meet another Louisa, especially whose name is spelt the same way!
@@BeingLouisa Ikr!! You are the second one I've ever talked to! Plus it's even more rare that we are both into midwifery. I'd love to talk to you more about midwifery out of the comment section in a message platform of some sort. That would be amazing and sooo helpful! :)
Hey, sorry I just saw this. You can DM me on Instagram @BeingLouisa
@@BeingLouisa oh thanks so much! I will do later today!
Hi i would like to know what a levels you need to become a midwife.
Biology is a good one to have. University websites will tell you what they need from you to get in
How did you get where you are today? I heard it takes 6-8 years to become a midwife
In the UK it only takes 3 years at university or 3 years at uni for nursing and then an extra year and a half studying as a student midwife.
What major did y’all need to take for midwifery
We don't have majors here in the UK. You just streamline into what you want to do
What subjects did u pick at a levels
I didn't do my A Levels with Midwifery in mind
What kind of experience and volunteer work should a student do before becoming a midwife?
If possible try to do volunteer work on a maternity ward. Even if it’s just making coffees and helping with parent Ed ( once everything is safer). You can then have access to midwives and be able to draw on their experience to write on your personal experience
@@BeingLouisa Thank you so much for the response! 😭 I’ll definitely look into it.

Where can you go to school for this
There are a lot of universities in the UK that offer Midwifery as a degree
M watching this video just beacause u r looking so beautiful ❤️ m not starting obg m starting nutrition
Do you have to do a A level science ?
It would be helpful. However, look at the university website that you want to go to and see what they require
I started my work as a midwife in labor session of hospital this week, i really need a good sourse of educational videos. If you know one, please intruduce it to me. :)
Can you please make a video about assignments and exams
In what direction would you want the video to be? What they are like? How many we have? Or how do I plan and complete them?
For example in assingments what to and what not to write
How to easily find what we are looking for in a question
How to study and memorise
....
I am in year 8 about to pick my options for GCSE I want to be a midwife when I'm older what would u have to pick for your options to become a midwife
For gcse's it really doesn't matter at all. Honestly do an option that is fun for you.
As Rusbina said, it doesn't really matter for GCSE's, however, make sure you have English and Maths. And then maybe science is good so that you can do biology in your A-levels
I have selection days coming in January iv applied for adult nursing and midwifery I'm torn between the two as I want to be working mostly in the labour and delivery unit
Did you manage to get any work experience in any of the fields? That's a great way to decide. Otherwise, universities may think you can do adult nursing and then do the 18-month conversion course for midwifery later
Being Louisa only work experiences I really had was in s residential care home but that was many 6 years ago I think I’ll go with the adult nursing then that course thanks girl
@@ddbabez No problem. But still maybe try to get some experience and be double sure it's what you want to do
Being Louisa alright thanks :)
Do you have to do injections I really want to be a midwife but I don’t think I could ever give people injections as I’m a bit of a wimp but I’m fine with someone else doing it
Cayla Rose yes we (i‘m a student midwife myself) do have to give injections! But you really get used to it!

It's never too late to do something you want to do. Plus, there was a lady in my cohort that was well into her 40s when she started
21? so you took a gap year ??
Not intentionally. I worked for a year whilst trying to decide what to do and then I did an access to HE course before starting the degree. So, I really had 2 years off between sixth form and uni

@@mhaameesi7182 I’m still not completely sure what you mean. If you’re asking who gives the degrees to people who graduate university in nursing and midwifery, then it’s the university who posts them.
I really want to be a midwife, i feel like its the only career i can spend my entire life doing
That’s amazing. You should go for it!
