Why Do South Park Fans HATE Wendy Testaburger?

  • Back when Matt and Trey released the Spirit of Christmas, the South Park boys weren't the only characters introduced. A group of unnamed children waiting in line to see Santa Claus is also featured, as is a little girl sitting on Santa’s lap wearing a distinctive pink beret. Before there was Butters, Tolkein, Clyde, Tweek, Craig, Jimmy, Timmy, or even Ike Broflowski - there was Wendy Testaburger. Wendy is NOT a particularly popular character amongst fandom, but is the hate justified? Let's explore.

    If you see Cartman as the hero of the show, Wendy is a villain. I think that sentiment explains some of the hatred of her. Regardless of how people feel, it’s hard to deny that she’s one of the most well-written characters in the show, and that she fills her role perfectly.

      I just see Wendy as the female version on Kyle. They would fill the exact same role if one them went away, the only difference is that Kyle cares more about Cartman than she does, and she doesn't have that many worthwhile moments in the grand scheme of things.

      It genuinely chills me to the bone to think that ANY South Park fan could possibly see Eric Cartman as the hero of the show. If you don't see that the whole entirety of South Park is Matt and Trey relentlessly ripping on the pathetic self-serving sociopathy of Cartman and ripping on society for tolerating it, you're not watching the same show I am.

      Wendy is easily amongst the top100 most annoying characters because that's her role. She's meant to be the one that brings things back to reality, who snitches, who brings up real world issues in a comedy show. That's part of the joke.
      But Johny also seems to think there's this great plurality of people who identify with Cartman and genuinely believe he's a good guy, so there's that too.

    I think what makes Wendy a good counter against Cartman is that she ISN'T the polar opposite to Cartman, a lot of people say this, but I disagree. KYLE is Cartman's opposite, Cartman is often compared to the antichrist, he's the most chaotic, evil, unapologetically selfish character in the show. He's evil, knows he's evil, is open about being evil, and just thinks that's how the world works, and that everyone is out to get him from the get-go and he's simply adjusting to the world around him. He's capable of absolutely tormenting and straight up making other people kill themselves just by a singular conversation with them.
    Kyle is basically the opposite ideology pushed to it's extreme. Kyle's known for his "I've learned something today" speeches, he's overly obsessed with bettering, not only himself, but others. Like how Cartman can get the worst out of seemingly innocent people, children and nannies, Kyle can get the absolute best out of literal dictator of Cuba, but Kyle's obsession towards bringing justice sometimes makes him seem even MORE selfish and delusional. Even if a situation has absolutely NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM, he'll help, not because he wants to do the right thing, not even because he wants glory, he literally just wants to feel as if he's the best guy ever, Ginger Cow delves into his mentality the best. Kyle is the most lawful mf ever, he won't stand for anything that isn't total justice.
    Wendy doesn't really give a shit about that, if Cartman is slandering her, she doesn't care, if random Muslim kid is being bullied by Cartman, she doesn't care, if Cartman INSULTS THE CAUSE SHE BELIEVES IN, oh it's game on bitch, and she is willing to be just as manipulative and as deceptive as him to beat him, like in Smurfs episode where he straight up uses Cartman's strategy to demolish HIS reputation, Kyle for instance would NEVER EVER do something like that, instead what he would do is make a poetic speech about being an individual and not trusting everything the media says to the school.

    • @thirdpedalnirvana
      @thirdpedalnirvana 5 месяцев назад +49

      Interesting take. I don't get from Wendy's actions in Dances with Smurfs that she's equal to him in terms of manipulation and deception. I feel like the difference is that Wendy has more of an "the ends justify the means" approach, whereas Kyle doesn't. He'd rather die on his hill alone than win down in the trenches. He'd rather rise above the problems of the world to set an example, which speaks to his egosim. Perhaps because I identify with him, I would argue that he isn't overtly egotistical, he understands that its not all about him cognitively, but he uses the emotional energy of his egoism to charge his batteries, so to speak. Wendy on the other hand really doesn't care who gets the credit, she cares about the result.
      This itself is sort of a commentary on how gender roles shape personalities. Society tends to care more about the egos of men, giving men credit and recognition for their work, than it does for women, who largely go uncredited. Even when Wendy genuinely destroys Cartman, she doesn't proclaim herself the victor, she doesn't gloat, she simply says "I'm finished!" and leaves.
      I actually think Kyle and Wendy would make a fantastic match. They understand how each other care deeply about the world beyond themselves, and they are both excellent communicators and deeply empathetic individuals. But because Stan is not, nor will ever be, mature enough to get over Wendy, dating her would undoubtedly destroy Kyle's friendship with him, so it can never happen.

Other characters, adults and kids, has absolutely no depth and are NPCs which can be replaced completely with other women in the entire plot. But she's not used for everything like how Randy is, well written character overall.
      Hate is a strong word(well, obviously whoring for clicks) but a lot of people tend to be annoyed by 'conscious' female character on their cartoon show that makes them think when they don't want to. Not in a Disney- /PC- fueled way.

    Another reason why Wendy is hated is because of the Style Shippers. I have seen in the fandom, both in the English and Latino communities, that they hate Wendy more than anything because of the fact that she interferes with the “romantic” relationship that Stan would have with Kyle, or that she is unfaithful, or as they say According to these people's arguments, Wendy is a “slut or bitch.”
    And really, I can understand that fans don't like Wendy because of things like she's too cynical or hypocritical, but hating her on a whim or that it's really stupid to hate her just because she's also Stan's girlfriend; Something that bothers Style Shippers and they detest Wendy to the point of insulting an incredible character like Wendy by calling her the worst possible names.
    Wendy may have her moments where she is hypocritical but she is really a good character, she is not a hollow or stupid girl, she has also shown to have concerns towards her friends and has been bullied by her own friends and very hard and sad moments with her that makes you have a lot of empathy for her.

      I think some people forget about the concept of the villain protagonist, a slot I think Cartman fits into. Yeah, the show has occasionally given possible reasons for why he is how he is, such as permissive parenting and a lack of a strong father figure, but most times there is no reason why Cartman is this way. He's just a pathetic a*s-hole because he wants to be. The show never treats Cartman like he's right about anything he says and viewers who understand thar DON'T like Cartman because he's right or a hero. They like him because he's funny.

    A rundown from someone who watched the show from her early teen years and who liked Wendy:
    1. Her and Stan's relationship got a lot less fun to watch over time (and she fell into the background for a while because of it).
    2. People preferred her back when she was "shy".
    3. Some Cartman apologists do not like her humbling him and for a show filled with people doing terrible things, they don't like it when the girls act the same as the boys.
    4. She has wonderful episodes like "Stupid Spoiled Whore" where she's passionate about the issues she believes in but other times, she's usually told off for going to far by another character.
    Don't know if that all tracks but something I've noticed.

    The show frames the boys as the protagonists and all the plots revolve around them. Wendy is either not present in an episode, or she is there just to be an obstacle the boys have to overcome to move the story forward or she is directly the antagonist in total opposition to them. It's not hard to understand why people don't like her because when you empathize when the protagonists all the time, you see her as a villain of sorts.
    She's basically Lisa Simpson. Full of herself, high on her own self-righteousness even when her hypocrisy is showing, and feels COMPELLED to interfere or intervene in anything she possibly can, while also portrayed as the smartest person in the room.
    But it's where she is different from Lisa that makes her more hated. Lisa actually has interests, hobby, and a personality beyond just being the annoying nagger. Lisa is also given her own episodes and acts as a protagonist as well rather than solely as an antagonist and because she is framed as the protagonist and the story is from her perspective, it's easier to get behind her and root for her even when she does similar things to Wendy because you're supposed to side with her. Wendy on the other hand is always an obstacle or antagonist. Maybe there has been one or two episodes over the almost 30 years of South Park where she was genuinely helpful or part of the team, but its extremely rare.

    In an era, where rationality and honor have faded into obscurity, Eric Cartman has emerged as a beacon of truth. This assertion might appear paradoxical given Cartman’s often outrageous behavior and beliefs. However, I would argue that Cartman serves as a countermeasure to a society that has chosen to overlook the harsher aspects of reality.
    Cartman is frequently cast in the role of “the buffoon,” a character archetype that traditionally highlights uncomfortable truths through humor and satire. He is also often backed into the corner and forced into the role of “the bad guy,” not because he embodies evil, but because he refuses to truly believe in, and conform to, the absurdities of the world around him. His non-conformity, while leading to societal scorn, allows him to persistently articulate and highlight truths that are often overlooked, through a veneer of cartoonish exaggeration and childlike innocence.
    One of Cartman’s key roles in the narrative is to expose the realities of human nature that other characters would rather ignore. These uncomfortable and challenging aspects of our existence are brought to the forefront by Cartman’s actions and words. The other characters are then forced to either acknowledge these truths or choose to ignore and disregard them to maintain their own fragile worldviews.
    Cartman also manipulates societal constructs to his advantage, thereby highlighting their inherent absurdity and unfairness. This manipulation is not just a testament to Cartman’s cunning and intelligence, but also a critique of the unfairness of the societal conventions that allow such manipulation to occur.
    In a society that prioritizes appearance over authenticity, Cartman stands out as a figure unafraid to reveal the world’s true nature. He is a wolf, feared and misunderstood. Society has molded Cartman into a predator simply because he aligns with truth and reason, the very things that his era rejects and distorts outright. In a more honest and just era, Cartman could have been celebrated for his talents rather than scorned. Cartman’s potential for greatness, and the refusal to acknowledge this potential, the fault of a society that fails to nurture such potential. It’s a poignant reminder of how societal norms and values can shape our destinies. Cartman is defined by one thing. Truth. And he's become the buffoon, villain, the heretic, the madman, of his era, simply for that alone.

Even in my life as a medium-attractive woman I’ve dealt with countless occasions of mistreatment by men. Trolling, verbal, sexual, and physical harassment, blatant misogyny, etc. In her position, seeing a woman with breast cancer being bullied into suicide by a male within their community, combined with peer pressure, is reason enough to, in a way, “boycott” male relationships.

      @AutZentus 2 месяца назад +1

      And what good does boycotting male relationships do for the men that don't do/never did the heinous things that have been put upon women including you? What good does shutting out all men do other then create loneliness on both sides or even make men not want to date women completely and be single until death when women decide to stop being misandrists over what a small bad batch had done to them?
      Radical feminism is killing our ability to work together as people and sustain a relationship in any form. I get that there are men who act like POSs, and those that are such do deserve to be boycotted or be reminded to not be a POS. But let's not forget women are just as guilty of being POSs towards men by doing the very Trolling, verbal, sexual, and physical harassment, etc. and even pushing blatant misandry. Amber Heard is an example of a woman who was abusive both physically and verbally towards Johnny Depp. There are other women out there who are just like her.

    My earliest memories of Wendy hate are reading comments from Stan/Kyle shippers in DeviantArt back in the 2000s.
    Seriously, the fact that the shipper hate is still going on today makes me wish that Sarcastic Chorus would call it out if he ever covers South Park ships someday.
    EDIT: And you know what's really ridiculous about the whole "Wendy is to blame for getting in the way of Style" argument? *BOTH* Stendy and Style got fucked over over time, as the recent seasons put an ever-increasing focus on Randy, Cartman, Butters, PC Principal and Garrison, and not enough focus on them. It's real easy to feel less invested in both ships from that, especially since recent episodes like "Cupid Ye" and "Deep Learning" portrayed them in a negative light. (Yet somehow it's like the shippers are still stuck on Season 15 and never moved on since then.)
    No, Wendy is not to blame for getting in the way of Style. *Randy, Cartman, Butters, PC Principal and Garrison are to blame for getting in the way of Style and Stendy's screentime.*

    I personally dont hate Wendy. I do find her to be a bit of a hypocrite though. For example, the hobbit episode. She had an issue with Butters calling Lisa fat and ugly but she called her fat and ugly herself. She also could have hated on Kim Kardashian for anything but instead went after her looks. She was basically like "It's bad for guys to talk bad about women but I can talk bad about women." That did make her come off as a hater because the whole episode all she does is go for people looks yet say its wrong when the boys do it. I did enjoy the episode but I feel like it shows the hypocrisy of Wendy.

    I feel like this is coming at it from a bias perspective. South Park has never been shy of making characters be both right and wrong and I would say Wendy about an even mix of both. She has been wrong MANY times. Take for example when she fought to have the school menu changed. She didn't ask for an option to get the food she and the other girls wanted, she had them change the whole menu preventing anyone who didn't want that from having the option of getting the old food they preferred. When challenged on this she didn't say "oh I see your point let me change the request I made. Instead she doubled down thinking she had the right to dictate what others had the option of eating, only for it to be revealed at the end the fake meat she replaced their original food for was just a crappy for them as the old food was.
    There are plenty of other examples of this. People typically don't like her because shes arrogant and think her perspective on things is flawless. Even in cases where shes technically right she approaches it with such a superiority complex and is often times show to be hypocritcal when she only applies her standards one way. Another example. The episode where she crusades against image filtering on online media. Yes she technically right in that people in general should worry about their appearence to that degree but she only brings up the idealized female body and how it affects the self image of girls, never once addressing the opposite side of that coin, the idealized male body, rippling with muscles, and six pack abs and biceps the size of the head.
    That Wendy's biggest flaw and the source of why she is a good character, for everything shes right about shes also wrong about something, often because her arrogance and self-righteousness blinds her from perspectives other than her own. In a way shes actually like an opposite extreme of Cartmen. They are both largely about self gratification but where as Cartman just openly selfish, manipulative, and assholish about doing so, Wendy wraps hers up in appearing virtuous and morally superior. True some of it might be coming from a good place but there are many examples of her simply having a "I know whats better for you than you do approach"

    Who hates Wendy?

  • @ARandomPerson66
    @ARandomPerson66 4 месяца назад +2

    I think that one part of what you said is mostly the reason for everything, she is the main staying woman character of the show, and so she embodied a lot of the good and the bad caricatures, whereas the boys do not always embody many of them. If Wendy's bad traits were divided in different characters like it was the case as more female characters got the spotlight, I think she would be more bearable.
    Wendy used to embody every kind of stuff we can hate in a woman and in relation with them. And for a lone character, it was too much to bear.
    One second she is smart, and then in another episode she can go woke and overly agressive and it's that kind of lack of real ground that can make her feel be a nemesis for many fans. Since the demographics of the show is mostly men, I think many of us can see bad memories or what we hate in women in Wendy.
    I am kind of surprised that she has so much hate, because even if I hate her bad traits, I definitely like when she is right and outdoes the others in a good way.
    I also think your last statement is right, she is shown as an activist and she is very smart, so personally, I do feel hurt whenever she has some bad double standards and becomes what she tries to fight against.
    I have higher standards to her because she is proved to be right and smarter so many of the times. In opposition to this, Kyle and Stan are not known to be the smartest boys, Cartman definitely is and we know Cartman is all about him. Since Kyle never backs down from fighting Cartman, and is shown to be prone to anger and outbursts, whenever his actions have him turning like his mother slowly and slowly, I see that as something that HAS to happen, because Cartman is playing him constantly and because Kyle knows his mother can be bad, so it is ironical. Stan is a good kid with flaws, and he feels like the most grounded/average kid to me, he isn't special. Wendy is shown to be higher.
    Heidi becoming like Cartman was also progressive so I never hated Heidi for becoming what she was literally eating, she ate meat when she did not want to, and she was eating a piece of Cartman each day they passed together. Heidi's fall was something I could believe happening. And I think many Cartman's stans will hate Heidi as much as Wendy.
