Unfortunately I haven't smoked a pipe for about 8 months, I'm just smoking cigars and puritos. Buying quality pipe tobacco in Brazil is very expensive. When I move to Spain, I'll go back to tasting my pipe because I'll have a lot more options and a very affordable price. Very good video.
Suggestion to the already-best reviews on YT: Record what it looks like when you first open the tin. Often, when you record that part there’s very little left-so not a great view of the product. Recording the part for that cut-away when you first open the tin would solve this first-world problem. Thank you.
Is it just me that finds that if I accidentally overdry a flake it tastes much better than 'normal' dryness?
No, not just you. I had a square SG tin burp without knowing and it was bone dry to almost dust. Smoked anyways and was very surprised how flavorful it was. This seems especially true for lakeland essense blends.
Yup!! This is also my experience.
With regard to thick flakes, I make a point of grabbing a strip whilst it’s wet, pinch it either side from the ends and and push toward the centre in an effort to creat holes and ripples without breaking it up. I don’t want to rub it out but I aim to make gaps in the flake to help airflow. Then I dry it and smoke it with less relights than I would otherwise have to make. That how I smoke Sam Gawith flakes.
SG produces some of my favorite blends. I’ve never minded having to relight one of their blends. Delicious!
I'm waiting on a tin of navy flake. Thanks to your videos I now have full virginia flake, squadron leader, and st james flake. All have been great! Although very expensive in canada, gawith blends have been readily available at my local brick and mortar store
Try Best Brown Flake when you can find it. It is very good.
Thanks for video! This is one of my favorite blend by SG. Never try navy blends with latakia before this one, but when I done it, I decided to pick up this awesome tea in my daily rotation) Try it after 1.5 or 2 years of aging - no rum at all, only delightfully virginia with a touch of latakia
Have you tried Sutliff Eastfarthing? It’s being lauded as a Frog Morton replacement. I wouldn’t say it’s the same, but it scratches that itch. It has become a favorite of mine to enjoy on the regular. You should try it out, and I’m sure just having Frog Morton in the title will get that video more views. If you have a P.O. box or something I’d be willing to send you a tin!
This review has the best sniff test ever from Bradley. Got me laughing hard!
I love how subtle the rum topping is. I've tried a lot of different blends with a rum topping that go completely "overboard" with it. I thought it had just the right amount, but I guess that's just me.
I love them but I’ve always had a hard time with Samuel Gawith tobacco. Even with adequate drying I was always relighting a lot and couldn’t quite get through that last 1/3 of the bowl. I feel like you have to dry it out well and catch it at the perfect time for it to smoke well. I do really like this blend though.
Thanks for sharing!
Totally agree. This blend was disappointing for me. That's my second SG blend that was a real let down, I love Squadron Leader though..
Thanks for the review! This is a blend that's somehow skipped past me though I've tried pretty much all their other ones. I'll have to give it a go!
I was going to make my 5 video for my channel, and it will be about why I motorcycle and how I got started. Then realized I really can make it personal for the man that got me in to riding. It was my first father in law and he was a career Navy guy and he took me to a memorial that I am adding in my video. Anyways, had to order a tin of this Navy flake for my video. Then thought of you and looked this full review as I watched first impressions also. Hope to finish this in the next two weeks. You are back to work on YT I saw today, so I know you made it back home safe. Can't wait to hear.
Cheers! Sounds like a good idea for a video!
I enjoyed this. You are not lying about the moisture. I really enjoyed the tin note and the people I was with (not pipe smokers) all mentioned they thought it smelled good when I was smoking it. I tasted the rum but it wasn't overpowering.
Great tobacco. It's supposed to be aromatised with a little rum, but I don't perceive it. A subtle touch of latakia, well, not so subtle but not a latakia bomb. Delicious, I missed it the last times.
Love the new camerawork! Keep experimenting!
Thanks! Will do!
In my experience, “navy” by definition means that it will have rum in it. I love this one, which I discovered when it was sold by Tavern Tobacco under the rather unwieldy name of Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge.
I seem to be enjoying the SG Navy Flake way more than when I first opened the tin. It is much drier now, but I’ve also added a little Evan Williams Bonded to the Falcon filter and in my glass.
Hey, Bradley! Please review Kajun Kake by Cornell & Diehl
My Navy Flake is still on its way, but Bothy Flake is my favorite tobacco. It seems to be basically the same thing with a whisky casing. Tastes a little like Islay Scotch. Shame that this kind of nuanced and mild topping on an English-ish base seems to be so rare.
This review was… interesting. 😀. I love Gawith. Looking forward to trying this one.
Very interesting indeed.
This is Virginia base is low Latakia
Very nice review, I fell this blend confuse my palette after i pass the Half of the bowl.
Nice review
Thanks for watching!
Hey Bradley, I’ve noticed you rarely note the age of the tin you’re reviewing and I’m sure you’ll agree, it makes a huge difference in a lot of blends. Just an observation.
Most are purchased right before the review is done, so they're all fresh. If there is any age, I try to remember to make note of it. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the in-depth review 👍👍
My pleasure!
Intriguing review !
Moist Towelette? I've had two tins and they were both, "Noachian Flood". It was absolutely stupid how wet they came. If you're ever going into the desert, carry a tin of Samuel Gawth, because it could save your life.
Great flake, one of my favorites.
Awesome. I've been wanting to see how you liked this one. I enjoy it quite a bit. Great review, as always.
I have like last two flakes of this blend in my jar and so far I think the fold and roll/twist method works the best. Tried cubing it or just rub it out and it burned too hot and it wasn’t enjoyable past the second third of the bowl. Just my observation. Puff puff. Good video.
It used to be no problem getting Gawith here in the States. A store near here kept it on hand. What happened in the past year or so to make it so hard to get?
The plague probably. Just a guess.
@@williamberry4597 I think it started before Covid. Whatever the reason is, it sucks. They have some of the best smoke on the planet.
It is possible that tin you acquired may have been an early tin in the Gawith Hoggarth transition. All of the recent production tins I've acquired (including Navy Flake) have a much thinner and more uniform cut than than the chunky monstrosities that Samuel Gawith was known for in the past.
It seems like recent production, but you're right, most of their flakes do seem to have thinned out a bit.
Wow… I wonder if the new packaging is drying out the SG blends as “Moist Towelette” is the driest SG rating seen to date.
Yes it does. That is very bad for aging. Idiots complained about SG being to wet. That was the genius of this blender. It helps you to rub flakes without turning a lot of it into dust. It keeps the flavor for a longer time. You can age it better. A lot of it is volatile oils not water. They listened and now all is lost.👍
Very interesting video...yes certainly intriguing. 🥴
Please review C&D Black Frigate.
It's a "VALataLake"! 😅
so cool
You can't have to much rum topping yum yum :P
Nice pipe. What make/model is it ?
It's a Peterson Sandblast Silver Spigot!
Arango Balkan Supreme review please sir!
Bradley. I love your reviews, but can you get back to reviews for tobaccos that people can actually buy?
Hey Bradley, when are we going to get to hear your intro song in full? :)
Interesting 😁
Poor smoking mechanics equal a waste of money and time to me.
Mushrooms, BBQ and teriyaki sauce? Where do you hipsters come up with this stuff?
