I did the jmt in 2015 after watching every video you posted. I went from happy isles to horseshoe in 19 days. It was the trip of a lifetime with my daughter(16yrs) and two sons(13 and 30). Glad to see you back in the range.
Believe it or not, most ultralight hikers bring a pillow. Inflatable pillows are so light these days there's no need for any UL hiker to leave them. Some ultralighters even have tenkara rod setups they bring along, but sacrifice comfort elsewhere to do so. That said, no need to justify yourself whether you're going ultralight or not. You've been doing treks like this for literally years and its how you enjoy backpacking. At the end of the day, you're the one hauling it. Thanks for once again doing a very thorough overview of your setup for this hike.
Always excellent info Glad your doing the JMT again I did HI to Reds in 2017 thanks to your last JMT video that was my inspiration to go I just turned 60 and hope to do all or finish next year Thank you!!!
Hi John, good informative video as usual. FYI I read the 70% heat loss refers to head and neck together. One of my favourite pieces of gear is a Polartec buff which I can wear when cold weather kicks in on a hike. Thanks 👍
I enjoyed your JMT 2021 video SO much! Great videography, it takes a lot of extra energy to stage the scenes, thank you for that! I smiled a lot while watching.... thinking of memories of the JMT.... me catching a huge Brown at Cathedral too..... loving Garnet and Marie Lakes.... and the "oh, we had lunch there" spots (by the way, did you see all the fish at the inlet of Marie?!?!) We hope to finish the JMT in August of 2023, the Bishop Pass to Cottonwood section. Thanks again!
Awesome John!!! Looking forward to it Man! I was supposed to hike it last summer but due to the pandemic was not able to get coming from Canada. Hopefully I can get back out there to hike it when the borders open up again! Your videos are amazing! Hope you Guy's have an amazing hike!!
Good to see you getting out again. That's a great setup, vaguely similar to mine. Love the Exos 58! Was hoping your start date was earlier with the hopes of crossing paths, but we start July 13. Good luck and be safe out there.
One of the best vid's I have seen... Very well thought out. Just a thought. I would put the clean clothes in the very bottom of the pack. And then the quilt would go in the dry bag. It will keep you alive in an emergency. imho.
Always appreciate seeing hear videos. Wanted to point out a couple of things: you’re only filtering 1 liter of water but often with all the available water sources which makes sense but your 4 liter water system does not. Based on what you’re describing you want quick filtering not walking away filtering. I’d suggest the katadyn befree. Filters a liter in 20 seconds or less. -stuff sack. You’re thinking about replacing seatosummit with dyneema but in the mean time you have a water bottle that weighs 8oz and 3 cook pots. My point being the stuff sack will save you 1oz but a smartwater bottle over the nalgene would save you almost 7oz. Also good call on the wide pad. I am in full agreement the arms falling off the side of a regular width is not a great experience.
Thanks for the tips, I will take a couple in consideration. I only have two cook pots (Jetboil & the 16oz. titanium). That is b/c I do not want to cook food or any flavored liquid in the Jetboil, it only heats water and is not good for cooking other things anyway, like Knor Pastas that need to simmer for 10 minutes. I know, why carry the Jetboil then... b/c I like to have the ability to heat a cup of water in under two minutes, which ultimately saves me from carrying a bigger can of fuel, so it all works out weight wise. As far as the filter goes, I carry the 4 liter so I can filter all 4 liters at once when I get to camp and have water for the whole night and in the morning. It also gives me the ability to carry 8 liters of water in an emergency, which I know I don't need in the Sierra, but have gotten use to doing as I hike in the southwest desert a lot. I carry that 7oz. water bottle b/c I can't tell you how many times I've smashed or cracked a lighter bottle like the smart one. Again, it's just something I've gotten use to carrying due to the desert hiking I do and don't want to push my luck in certain situations, like Death Valley or Utah. Thanks again.
man, you and I really see eye to eye on so many gear options - what a smart guy you are! I wish I was young enough to keep up with you - I'd love to do a hike with you some time.

Hey john great to see you its been a while. I'm surprised as much of an experienced hiker as yourself that your water system is still so big and bulky...the nalgene bottle? Awesome video man. I’m planning on doing the trail NOBO out of Cottonwood Lakes next July. Was just wondering if you’ve ever had to use gaiters while out there.
Thanks... I have never used gaiters in the Sierra, but I have used them in Yellowstone. I would imagine you'd want them for an early season trek after a heavy snow year though.
I might see you out there. I’m SOBO starting Happy Isle on Sept 9. I picked up a lot of good tips from your video (all your videos) but will only mention where our setups are different for the JMT. I have Exos 58 too, but mine is green and the previous version. I usually leave the lid at home to save 4 oz. I have an EE enigma too, but will I use an Arcteryx SV puffy with it as I’d think we could see 20 degrees at worst in Sept. I’ll bring 2 Reynolds Oven bags in case there’s a freak snow storm for my feet. They weigh and cost nothing. You might want to look at a polycryo ground tarp and compare the weight to the silnylon one in the video. I use that with an O.R. Interstellar bivy plus dyneema tarp setup. The tarp is just ‘in case’ like the oven bags.
Thanks Lloyd... I wouldn't waste your time with the two oven bags for your feet. They'll end up soaked anyway from perspiration, as plastic bags don't breath... I know this from experience in 4 straight days of rain in Northern Cascades. Have a great JMT.
Very useful video, John. Thanks for going into so much detail. Helps a lot in giving me ideas on saving on space and weight. One question. Is it a concern your quilt getting wet if it rains while you're hiking? Is your pack waterproof at all?

Really enjoyed the 2013 video. My sister and I leave July 23rd out of Tuolumne Meadows on the JMT. I have two questions. What tripod do you bring as I know you are a serious photographer. I’m bringing my full frame Nikon Z7ii and my Peak Designs Carbon fiber tripod weighs 3 lbs. I’m looking for a lighter weight alternative. Also, are you re-supplying at Onion Valley this time and where are you placing your re-supply. I’m hearing that the rangers are no longer allowing you to store re-supply in the bear boxes in Onion Valley parking area. Thanks
Hey Lawrence... I carry a tiny pocket tripod, which allows me to level the cameras still, but I have to find something high off the ground to place it on for some shots. I'd rather have that task than carrying a 3lb. tripod, which I have done before. Yes, we are resupplying around the Kearsarge area, but not from Onion Valley. I haven't heard anything about the bear lockers there and if the rangers are not allowing food storage anymore. Call the visitor center in Lone Pine and they will let you know for sure.... don't believe everything you hear on the FB group pages. Good luck out there.

Lol... unfortunately Squeaks doesn't hike much anymore and Fake Chow lives in Tennessee and is married with 3 kids now. Gregg & Randy are an awesome hiking crew and we had an amazing trek... stay tuned!
@@JohnCantHike55Amorosano if you ever get a chance to come out to Tennessee, hit me up. I live in East Tennessee and my favorite place to hike is the Roan Highlands.
John,
any idea what happened to Joey C?
Thanks
No idea.
@@JohnCantHike55Amorosano Thanks, hope he is ok.
What pot is that?
The really good stuff from Cali... oh wait, LOL.
Not sure what the brand is, but it's a 16oz. titanium pot.
@@JohnCantHike55Amorosano those Cali pots are the best!
