The amazing thing is to watch the ridiculous stuff he is playing.... then realizing how effortless it is for him as he smiles like a kid on Christmas day.... Pure Joy.
It's his more subtle techniques that melt my brain. In the mid section covering Elton John, notice his thumb stays firmly planted while the rest of his fingers move up and down 4 frets?! Yeah. Try that just once and you'll need to wear a brace on your hand for a week! For most of the song he plays so fast you don't notice that he's playing the melody with the bottom two fingers on his right hand and strumming rhythm with his index and hitting a percussive string with his thumb pick... dude does like 5 things all at the same time with each note he plays. Then he puts the guitar down and acts like it's no big deal and grabs a drink with a guy at the bar.
The story goes, at one of his concerts after playing the first piece Tommy asked if there were any guitar players in the Audience, a loud voice yelled back "Not anymore"
G'day shakes, he hasn't blown you away yet. Listen to imitation, then you'll be blown away. You'll think he's looping but if you look carefully there are no loop peddles. Truelly amazing
Initiation is Tommy's best instrumental where he gets the most bang for his buck, soundwise. Listen, imagine that you're at a sacred aboriginal ceremony where a boy becomes a man
A young Aus player coming through, with a huge and dedicated worldwide supporter group already, is Tash Sultana. Tash plays twenty plus instruments. "Jungle live bedroom concert" is most popular worldwide, it's REALLY complex and interesting, but if you just want pure guitar skills, "Blackbird, 7 Layer Sessions" 12 string.
I'll never forget the day I was casually wondering the aisles of the local supermarket listening to this album on my Sony Discman and nearly walked in to Tommy himself, all I could say was "hey I'm listening right now". As he walked by with his groceries.
Something similar happened to me once. Was listening to the CD McLemore Avenue by Booker T and the MGs, an Abbey Road cover in my car, pulled into a parking space, walked into a bookstore and out walks Steve Cropper....the guitarist for Booker T.
The Emmanuel Brothers played regularly at a club I went to in Sydney in the 1980s, or they'd get up and play with other bands if they were just in the club having a drink.
He’s the master of the acoustic guitar, watch his version of Michelle (Beatles song) he shows why he’s the man with his harp harmonics or cascading harmonics, he also does an unforgettable version of Over The Rainbow with the harmonics technique 🔥
josh cohen and john butler are out of this world and tommy did a gig with kid named i think billy strings tommy pulled him on stage to cut heads mind blowing!!
Yes, Tommy is universally regarded as the best or at least one of the best. Another gifted Aussie fingerpicker you should check out is Joe Robinson. He has played with Tommy, and he's right up there too.
@@Shakes-P Marcin was playing a guitar with Tommy Emmanuel's signature on it at age 14 or 15! You can see that signature on that guitar in Marcin's YT Innuendo nd Master of Puppets tracks. :-))
I see you've discovered Aussie pub rock. If you want your face to melt and your head to explode you gotta do "Take a Long Line" by the Angels. Great Aussie band .
If you pay close attention he is playing the bass line with his thumb and the rhythm and melody with his fingers, he can read music and learnt by listening to the radio with his brother Phil from around the age of 5 and thought the bass and rhythm were all played by the one person so that is how he learnt. i last saw Phil in 1999 and Tommy in the 90's both together are truly mind blowing. A MUST watch is Initiation the sounds he gets from a guitar is truly amazing
Tommy has been playing since the age of 3. never learnt to read music and doesn't want to..or did his brother Phil..and that's an Australian made guitar that he plays..a "Maton" 808 . he's very well respected in the guitar World..
Welcome to Tommy Emmanuel, Shake. I dare say you've already researched Tommy a fair bit by now. You'll find that Chet Atkins bestowed upon Tommy a "Certified Guitar Player" (CGP) status - something that Chet didn't give to everyone. Tommy has a great story of his life growing up. He's performed professionally since aged 6.

You literally could not have said it any better lol
Thanks for reacting to Tommy he’s been in the space for such a long time it’s about time he gets some acknowledgment. This dude is a freak
He really is!

Very good observation. That thumb is planted and his fingers reach frets that would break most people's fingers lol.

Australian artists are underrated ❤️
I swear I cried with laughter when I first saw this video a while ago🔥 tommy is a living legend.
Just wow!
When Les Paul, Chet Atkins and Eric Clapton say you are one of the best ever, you are.
Agree!
Acoustic guitar goat. Love Tommy
His brother was also a fantastic guitar player though he played more electric guitar. RIP Phil Emmanuel 👍🏼
Seeing them together was a joy.Phil was the wild child.

Does Tommy enjoy playing that guitar or what? Phenomenal.
best of the best!! I'm seeing him again in less than a week and I can't wait.
Tommy is the guy that artists who have already sold over 100 million albums got to for guitar lessons. He is a Master 👏
Tommy never ceases to amaze! ❤
A master musician showman and entertainer. Kind of like Roy Clark.

On the “note bend” it wasn’t the tuners. He was bending the neck. Loved your enthusiasm for this humble, living legend.
his left hand is great but it's his right that makes it awesome
Great guitarist, great reaction. Thanks. By the way, Tommy signed on Marcin's guitar when they met..

He is one of only 5 Certified Guitar Players ever, and it is definitely earned.
He doesnt bend the notes with the tuners, he bends the neck of the guitar itself
Simply the best in the world. Have seen him live, nothing like it ever! B. AUST
Agreed. 100%
Check out Journey and Initiation by Tommy Emmanuel. Initiation is just incredible.

Tommy is SO good his guitar needs to practice!
Treat yourself and watch tommy play a slower song... Like ( somewhere over the rainbow ) ... Yes he can play slower ..
My God I had to turn off. You totally spoiled it with your gibberish
