Monoplegia - Localizing the lesion | Details

If a patient presents with monoplegia, how do we know where the lesion is that is causeing the problem?

Dose a lesion in brain cause loss of joint position sense( cortical sensory loss) ? Or its due to loss of proprioception in dorsal column injury of spinal cord?
