    If you stay away from the MSPORT and Dynamic Handling options, the 230i is the best deal. Plenty of performance as a daily and great mpg. Mine has the Convenience package and heated seats and it’s $39k. Feels good dynamically and looks really nice too. An M 240 starts at about $10k more but most are around $55k. So more like $10-15k more then add taxes and dealer fees. I found mine with only a few basic options and love it.

    3k more than my M240i was in 2017! Car prices have gone mad.

  • @postalpancho
    @postalpancho 2 года назад +15

    Here in the USA I got a 230i M sport with the dynamic handling which includes the bigger Brimbo brakes and ELSD, and I deleted the sunroof and the price was under $42k! That is about $10k under the m240 with the track pack for additional cooling and wider tires that you will need if you plan to hit up track days. That extra 10k does go a long way with BMW as far as raw performance but I don’t think it is 10k worth of fun. Personally I rather save that money and blow it on more tires and more track days. I think the 230i is the sweet spot as long as you don’t go crazy with the options. As far as the 220i we don’t get it here in the States. Not sure how 180hp in a 3500lb car is a fun proposition. That sounds like Miata like acceleration (not a complement) At that point just look for a lightly used 228i or 230i, you’ll be much happier.

      You are correct, totally correct but you have to understand that the average gas price Europe is around 10$ per gallon and wages are about half US so as you can guess "running" a car is super expensive and makes that much of a difference

    • @postalpancho
      @postalpancho 2 года назад

      @@PromethSunrise fair enough. At least you guys get the 130ti. If I lived in the EU I’d likely take the 130i over a 220i. The interior isn’t much smaller and the power to weight ratio would be much better.

    As it happens I recently spent about 10 days in a G42 220d whilst my M240i went to BMW HQ for some specialist coding. I was so sceptical about it initially as it was the new generation car and a diesel of all things but within a day I was fully sold.
    Very efficient with a strong torquey motor. I got around 47-50mpg driving with absolutely no consideration to efficiency whatsoever. It’s about 100lb-ft shy of my car but as mine is manual and this has the auto, up to about 45mph there is little difference in acceleration. The motor is smooth and any vibrations are distant but it doesn’t make a good sound at all. If they made a 230d it would be the ultimate daily.
    Everything else echoes what Joe says. Build quality, tech and interior mood are massive pluses. I felt like I hand ample room but it felt like the bat mobile inside and far more expensive than what I’d expect something bearing the 2 series badge to be. Up close and in person it really is quite an item. To mee the car is more neutral out of the box than the F22, I had to mod mine to get it to a point where I liked it but I did buy it with intentions to modify.
    Steering is dead as a doornail and really hurts the car as everywhere else is a highlight. It’s a great successor to the original and I fully understand why someone would choose to buy it. It may be expensive but it feels expensive so I guess it’s justified. But honestly just by used and get an M lite it’s so much more fun 🤣

    Hi Joe. I test drive the 240i x drive and found it very disappointing. It lacked feel and connection and the adaptive dampers are virtually useless. In the hardest setting the ride is ridiculously hard. Why BMW have this type of set-up is a mystery when most people will never use this setting. By all means have 3 setting but make them relevant. I got back into my 12 year old 135i coupe and it felt so much better.
    It would be interesting if you could compare these new models to some of the older BMW models. I know that in many ways there have been improvements, however, in driver connection and enjoyment not so much. I’m another Aussie. Thanks.

    Prices for a 230i and an M240i are very similar, the only issue in Italy is the extra-tax you pay every year if the engine power is more than 250hp. That's what makes an M240i very expensive and less affordable here..
    I ordered a 230i and the official BMW dealer suggested not picking the head-up display. Because of the chip shortage he could not estimate a sure delivery date. In the end, I decided not to pick that optional. Nevertheless, I have to wait at least 6 months.

    • @BennyStLeger
      @BennyStLeger 2 года назад

      Out of curiosity, what would you expect to pay each year in tax on the 240 & 230 in Italy? I remember reading an article about the Alpha Romeo Quadrifoglio costing around €6K per year!

    • @xoldan
      @xoldan 2 года назад +1

      @@BennyStLeger It's true. Consider that you pay the normal property tax until 185Kw. Then you add an extra 20 Euros for every Kw. The property tax for a 240i is around 2.300 Euros per year, 650 Euros for a 230i. Furthermore, you must consider all the extra costs related to insurance, maintenance, etc. How much is the property tax in your Country?

    • @BennyStLeger
      @BennyStLeger 2 года назад

      @@xoldan wow; that’s crazy! And your cost of fuel is really high in Europe too. What is your current fuel price for 98 Unleaded? Here it’s around A$2 per litre or about €1.35 per litre. As for car tax, we pay around A$800 per year (about €530) for Registration & Accident Levy (covers all medical costs in the event of an accident) and that’s all. We then have to pay our own insurance to cover damage to our car or others in the event of an accident, which would be around A$1.5K - $2K on a new M240i.

    • @xoldan
      @xoldan 2 года назад +1

      It's something like 1,7 € per litre just beacuase the Government cut some taxes on it (until july), otherwise it would be 2-2,2 per litre.
      In Italy insurance cost is very variable. It depends on many factors (the age of the driver, previous accidents, the area of the Country you live in, etc.). Where I live (north of Italy), it's around 2.000 € per year (all inclusive) for a 230i. I don't know insurance costs for a 240i, I never asked for a quotation once I had found out how much the property tax would have been

    • @BennyStLeger
      @BennyStLeger 2 года назад

      @@xoldan wow; everything is even more expensive in Europe! Our Government also reduced the tax on petrol otherwise it would be around A$2.50.

    • @leccybadger
      @leccybadger 2 года назад

      Yes and no; they do add a wee bit of visual width, however the 240 does sit higher than the 4cylinder variants. I collected my 240 straight from the showroom, where it was parked adjacent to a 220i, the ride height difference was noticeable. Measuring mine, approx 168 mm from floor to bottom of side skirt, approx 46mm from bottom of arch to top of front tyre. I don't have the adaptive dampers, btw.

I didn’t upgrade for the speed but mainly the character and sound of the engine. 230i was also far worse for depreciation but it’s hard to compare as covid has thrown out any consistency. There’s no bad choice but the M240i was a cut a above the others in the previous generation. I suspect it’s the same way with the new car.

      I have a 2018 125i, same B48 engine. I would imagine the performance will be similar to the 230i.
      The car is more then quick enough for every day driving. 0-60mph in 6 seconds flat or under.
      I recently went up to liverpool from London (200miles) with a mix of eco mode and heavy foot mode and got 46mpg average consumption.
      Insurance was almost half the price compared to its big brother m140.
      Only downside of getting a 230i is every time you see an m240i it feels like you have the smaller package.... literally.

    With all due respect, You have to be an absolute stingy ... to be able to get 60 miles/gallon. You'd barely be touching the gaspedal. I've owned a 320d. 45 is best You can do longterm with city and freeway/highway mix. Still pretty good, though.
