    As a woman I appreciate this demonstration. It makes a good case for carrying a revolver. Paul has said many times to think about circumstances you might need to use a firearm and realistically point blank contact defense is something every woman should consider.

    • @Nipah.Auauau
      @Nipah.Auauau 6 месяцев назад +9

      One thing I'm wondering is how hard do you have to press to push the firearm out of battery? At least for some of them it looked like he had to lean into it pretty hard. If it's point blank against, say, an inch or two of soft clothes and skin or an inch or two of fur is that enough to risk out of battery?

    • @trevorgray4852
      @trevorgray4852 6 месяцев назад +13

      @@Nipah.Auauau good question. I would say yes even though you are correct he seemed to press into some of them kinda hard, but think about if a person/animal is charging you at contact distance,they going to be moving fast and with harmful intentions and most likely going to be throwing there weight into you and your most likely going to pull your pistol and stick it into them or they will run into your muzzle probably before they even realize you have a gun(if it's a person) up close fights are usually fast and violent and one of you is most likely going to be throwing your entire weight into the other if not both of you slamming into each other kinda like sumo wrestler style lol. Of course every situation is different but your likely going to be crashing into one another one way or the other plus your going to be gripping your weapon pretty tightly most likely with tons of adrenaline and a death grip, maybe literally 😮 not to mention you may be falling or your weapon may be twisted in a odd angle and that could increase/ Change the contact surface area. In sort surprise attacks at point blank range are fast and violent and will probably have a winner in less then 10 seconds, if you've ever been in a fight they usually turn into wrestling matches/on the ground and a true fight is usually over very very quickly, a true 30 second fight is very very long and tiring and even the winner will probably be huffing and puffing from physical exertion and or a huge surge of adrenaline

    This is a great video, and it brings up a valid point. I recently sold a .44 Mag revolver. I didn’t get a whole lot for it because there isn’t a huge market for them at the moment. What surprised me was the buyer said everyone is using 10MM auto loaders, to which I responded, “They are definitely awesome, until you accidentally eject the mag during an adrenaline dump trying to shoot a bear or your auto loader goes out of battery.”

    There's a trick you can do with the 1911. With the safety on, place the firearm against the target, hold the trigger down, and the release the safety. It will fire before going out of battery. Obviously that's not practical when you've got a bear or mountain lion in your face but it does work.

    • @HopeisAnger
      @HopeisAnger 6 месяцев назад +15

      True, but test it in a safe environment first. Had a burr in the safety divit on the slide. The safety hung up on that when the slide was in contact with target.
      Additionally, if you remain in contact, the slide will almost certainly not return to battery. Furthermore, the likelihood of a feed issue is drastically worse than normal.
      Expect to take an administrative action immediately to return weapon to a functional state.

      Very true. I am not sure, however, if the same is true for other guns with an external safety. Also, on mine I found that I need to press the trigger hard to make this workaround work. If I just press the trigger lightly to just break, the gun will go out of battery as soon I depress the thumb safety. So it’s true: “know your firearm “.

    The 1911's safety locks into the slide. This allows you to be in contact with the object you intend to shoot. You press the 1911 into your target with the safety on while applying a pull on the trigger, as soon as you disengage the safety with the pressure applied elsewhere the 1911 will fire. If the safety does not lock into the slide then you may be compromised in point blank distance...

    Threaded barrel pistols don't go out of battery when pressed against a target.

    • @LibertysetsquareJack
      @LibertysetsquareJack 6 месяцев назад

      They still will if the mass "wraps around" the muzzle and makes contact with the slide. Ditto for weapon lights and such: all these types of things do is provide a little extra distance between the slide and the contacting body; they don't eliminate the mechanical issue in itself of the pistol being out of battery with the slide pushed back.
      Again, the larger and more enveloping the mass making contact, the bigger standoff you'd need. So against a hard, essentially flat surface, yes, a weapon light or barrel extension will probably keep the pistol from being pushed out of battery; but if the body being contacted is very large and enveloping, such as a large animal, a fat man, or even a lean man wearing bulky and heavy clothing, there is still a very high likelihood that contact with the slide will be made.
      On a similar note, tests such as what Roy conducted premise a near 90° angle between the bore axis and the contacting body, and a non-moving body and/or shooter's hand, which is where some sort of standoff will really make a difference. In an actual fight, however, the angle may be very oblique, and both the target and shooter are likely to be in motion, both of which mean the slide is very likely to catch or have pressure put on it, regardless if the muzzle area has a barrel extension or weapon light or other sort of stand off.

    I've been in a debate with myself over this for several months now. Been thinking of switching to a revolver instead of my auto loader EDC. This is one reason I am thinking about because of the most shootings are three feet or less and three seconds and three shots. The hold back to me is low capacity six rounds. And the what if factor, because there is no way of ever knowing what is going to happen. Thanks Roy,and I saw the interview with Paul. It was great to see and hear him again. Paul seemed to still have his sense of humor and humility. He is truly the legend!

      Or just hold the slide and push it back into battery. I know that sounds sketchy as hell, but it won’t rip your hand off. You will have to manually cycle the action to Fire next round.

      There are now many options (including some light weight options) for 7 and 8 shot .357s. That’s a pretty daggone good compromise.

      There are several small weapon lights and other small attachments that go on the rail that could act as a stand off to keep everything in battery. I'd probably look into those first before making the plunge.

    My WML TLR/7 extends beyond the barrel, which mitigates the slide making contact.
    The S&W 640Pro (bug) isn't affected by contact either.

    Hmm, I wonder if my PX4 has that problem.
    Update: PX4 still works at contact distance. It will fire with the muzzle pressed against something.
    You actually have to move the slide back on it's own.
    I guess that rotary action has has it's advantages.

    Should like to hear sometime on your opin on a dream and perfect holster.
    For open say Range Carry and Concealed.
    Current topics in modern Engineering are Modularity, Ergonomics and Customer Feedback (statistical).
    Noticed a few options lacking on modern holsters such as retention straps, versatility for accessories, spare mag. pouch(es), removal w/out belt wear.
