Lol, yes Chihayafuru is probably why most of us here know about karuta, but karuta's been around way longer than that anime, and will probably be around for a good while too. I've been playing for a couple of months now with a deck in English that I put together, and I can say, with what limited experience I do have, that karuta is more than an anime, or even the traditional Japanese culture it was built on. Karuta is a great game that can stand by itself, which is why I don't like saying, "Karuta is a game from this cool anime called Chihayafuru," or even, "Karuta is this traditional game from Japan, and is composed of a hundred ancient Japanese poems." Sure, it's all that, but behind the kimonos and the dramatization, we find an intense game of concentration, memorization, strategy, and speed that far outclasses any other card game.
+meng commissaris sammmee, i just watched one like this reality queen match she looked like shinobu anyways they are much slower tham the queen which is understandable
Yes, actually! There are some great Karuta apps that will read out the poems similar to the video. There are two that I like "vsKaruta" and "かるた". Hope this helps!
Picking up karuta cards and a CD during my trip to Japan next month. :) Also yes, big brainers, we know karuta existed before anime, like most (if not all) Japanese culture shown in anime.
I did not come here because of Chihayafuru :D I'm just in the middle of making my own karuta cards. I hope that its good way to not forget hiragana. btw. I like Chihayafuru too~
Japan has so many unique things young and old can play. These things can be casual and also highly ritualistic with traditional dress. The only thing we have in the USA that even comes close that does not involve a sport is the National Spelling Bee. And that is only because the English language is a huge challenge itself being non-phonetic with lots of foreign parts.
I found another explanation... those are actually dead cards, or ghost cards. There are 100 yomifuda cards (for reading) and 100 torifuda cards (for playing). However, only 50 torifuda are in play (25 for each player). The other 50 torifuda not in play are the ghost/dead cards, as their yomifuda counter-parts are still read during a match.
Oh karuta yeah there's a anime of this the name is Chihayafuru it's kinda little hard to play cauze you need to know or memorized all of them haha! well I will just play Kendo...
They aren't technically hitting it, its to pick up the card, they swing their hand out to get it and sometimes people miss by just a millimeter and cant pick up the card, hitting the tatami/floor while practicing is a way to get your body used to swinging AND touching/picking up the card.
its a card game, 100 cards, with 100 poems on, the basic idea is that each side gets the came amount of cards, not all are used, then they are placed, and you have about 15 minuted to memorize the position of both your and opponents cards, you must clear the cards from your side, if you take an opponents card, then you give one from your side, until you have none, but all the poems are read, what makes it hard is how the card is read, like it can start with the of a , and it gets challanging
My idea for karuta is to keep everything in Japanese. Instead, on the cards, the words would be written in english phonetic so you can keep the everything else constant.
when you want to play karuta you dont need to remember all 100 poems just memorize the kimari-ji and learn hiragana. thats all, when you try to memorize all poems by poems it will take time and it will feel like its impossible to memorize then give up halfway. anyway, learn hiragana then memorize the kimari-ji. even your not in japan and dont have an opponent you can still play the karuta if you want to play.
Dud this is like the 10th video I watch about Kruta and I noticed that it is actually a ladies dominating sport, I thought that was only an anime thing, and to top it all off they are all cuties UwU I would play it just for that XD
Yeah, it's kind of a complicated game. There is indeed a relation between the game and the song. The song is actually several poems, one of which are on each of the cards. If you would like to know more about Karuta, here is a link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karuta Maybe I'll do a video explaining it in the future! Thanks for the question!

Anyone know a video with the readings? I finally got my hands on some Karuta cards, and I want to practice it, but I gotta have the reading.
Yes, actually! There are some great Karuta apps that will read out the poems similar to the video. There are two that I like "vsKaruta" and "かるた". Hope this helps!
Thanks, I'll give them a shot :D
Thank you Chihayafuru ^_^

btw. I like Chihayafuru too~
I love watching this game
OMG,I can't belive that Japan really have karuta ,I want to try and play!!!!
Why they smack the floor even not touch it or recite any poems?

And that is only because the English language is a huge challenge itself being non-phonetic with lots of foreign parts.
OMG! Ikr, it's real! I doubt there was something like that at first place but it's real :-O
I found another explanation... those are actually dead cards, or ghost cards. There are 100 yomifuda cards (for reading) and 100 torifuda cards (for playing). Why there are times when neither of them touch a card? (they move towards a card but neither of them complete the movement)
I know right, did u watch the anime on crunchyroll?
Chihaya!!! solo por ella, quería comprobar si realmente era tan intenso

i like how 4:15 the girl at the far end hits hers and it lands in place in the closest game.
Karuta is great ! I'll try it one day
awesome just awesome!!!! how i wish i could do that
FREAKING AWESOME *__*

probably because the poem being recited sounds like the card they were motioning to, but it actually isn't :)
do you know what the standard size of a karuta card is?
My idea for karuta is to keep everything in Japanese. Instead, on the cards, the words would be written in english phonetic so you can keep the everything else constant.
What i still don't understand why she gave him some cards
Ano osaka de doko ni koruta o benkyousuru no ka?
what are they doing??
deos any one know if you could pay katura in english with the poems if so were
Secretly the most intense game
