Thanks for educating folks on the difference in performance! Too bad we are so conditioned to spending so little on cheep, poor quality imports. I really appreciate that GEES provides a choice. Thanks for the vid!
jimrivergear No doubt...You get what you pay for that's for sure...At times a few extra bucks can make a big difference...The only reason I own a few Frabills is that's all that's sold around here now...Wish I would have went online and bought one of these...
Is it because the wiring of the frabill might allow smaller minnows to find their way out in the metal weaving? The Gees trap looks like the weaving is closer together maybe resulting in keeping the fish inside better?
Gonzo, the proof is in the pudding (or the Gee minnow traps)! What a dramatic difference between them and the cheap Fraibilll! I never would-a thunk the difference would be so great! Thanks for the excellent demonstration!
I've caught some in traps. Little things but a pain in but to keep. You are better off returning them when you can tell that they are bass. They will die from choking on their brothers or too big food. They swallow fish the same size then choke to death with fish hanging out of their mouths. They grow too fast too. They are always hungry. Just get a dollar store butterfly net and net up spongy seaweed by docks you will catch tons. They die off so fast only a few make it to adults. I prefer beautiful punkinseeds. They are more aggressive and live longer.
Things I noticed... Frabill was closer to shore. Both were thrown in the same spot so whatever is there will choose one or the other. There also was more bait in the Gee minnow trap. The area just might have more minnows than another spot as well. One is a different color than the other. So the comparison was faulty.
+Barry Wind "One is a different color than the other." Maybe that's part of the reason why one works better than the other. To catch different amounts, they must be different in some way.
bbcasting Thanks...I do believe the silver has a lot to do with it...The minnows can see through this trap...The black one they don't see through that's why they sit on top and eat the bait...The minnows see other minnows in the silver trap and it makes them feel comfortable going inside I believe...Thanks for watching and great question...
Gee's is just a better american made trap...Frabill is junk and has a plastic around it that the minnow's don't like...You will catch a few minnows in a frabill but 10 times or more in a Gee's...Proven fact with all the minnow trapping video's I have done'...
+Barry Wind Yes, they do. In fact, the Gee's G-40 was developed over 100 years ago for environments like streams. Place your trap in a place where the minnows are more likely to move thru. Be sure that the trap is in deep enough water so the minnows can enter, at least 9" deep. Your trap works best if you keep it in the direction of the current. Be careful that the stream isn't flowing too quickly. Calmer water is usually more productive. As far as bait goes, try dry cat or dog food. A 1/4 cup will do. Maybe try a bread dough ball. In many cases you don't even need bait. Watch some of Gonzo's other videos showing how. He is a seasoned pro with the Gee's G-40.Thanks for asking,Greg PopoviceTackle Factory
If you use it in streams make sure the entry holes are facing the way the water is flowing because minnows swim easily when going down and up not side to side
Gonna get one. Looks like fun for the kids and free bait for me. I haven't trapped my own minnows since I was a kid. Do you ever target leeches for bait? Use chicken livers and pantyhose to make a ball like a big spawn sack. Tether it to bank line and let it soak over night. Great demonstration.
MI Timberwookie The kids will have plenty of fun and like you said you will get bait out of it brother...I go after the leachs when the water warms a bit and the Walleyes are not as active...I will give that a shot this year...Thanks for the pointer...
Huge difference Gonzo! Great comparison and why quality and just a few more dollars can be a better choice! Thanks for sharing... nice looking leeches too!
I have to differ on that...I have did a number of comparisons and the Frabill is actually junk but that is just my opinion...You may do good with them or another brand...I'm hooked on Gee's for life now...
Heith Gagnon I watched another vid where this guy made a minnow trap w a two litter soda bottle. He musta caught like 30-40 minnows w it in his river.. of course location always plays an important roll. I think I'm gonna start off making one like that and see how it goes. I'm actually after a few baby largemouth bass and baby catfish as I collect lake fish and raise them in my tanks. I currently have a 6inch small mouth bass in a 70 gallon w two crawdads and in another tank, 5 baby 1 inch bluegill. I caught those w a net at my uncles pond. Wondering if these minnow traps would catch those types of fish I mentioned. Great video man
delicious fishes Mostly Brook Trout and on a jig head for Walleye when season opens but I do use them for Crappie also...I caught a few 12 and 13 inch Crappie today on accident and let them go...I will post that vid Thursday...Thanks for watching bud...
Ash Clemmons Yup...Frabill is like 8 bucks and the Gees is around 12 depending where you get it from...If you don't have any Gees traps around you then you have to go on ebay or amazon and they are around 15 to 20 bucks but you save a lot of money instead of having to buy bait in the long run...Plus Gees is made in the USA...Hope this helps...
Sorry It took me so long to respond and send a comment on this video . I think i just woke up !!!!!!!!! I passed out when I seen that huge leach!!!! lol cool video . ATB
I am trying to trap minnows for the first time. I have two of the Gee's traps and am using bread and/or dog food as bait. I'm placing them in a creek that runs into a large river. I am catching very few minnows and dozens of tiny bluegill. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can change that ratio to very few bluegill and dozens of minnows?
i gotta say, my 1st thought was, what could possibly be different between the two minnow traps, but wow! holy moley was that an amazing side by side comparison. Its Gee for me!!!!
Doesn't madder what traps you use I have a frabill and I throw it every after noon befor fishing the next day and last time in the frabill I caught 3.5 dozen chubs and bluegills
+LIam Vanmanen Is it possible that if you had a Gee's you would only have to trap every other day because you might trap twice as many in one soak with a Gee's which would mean you might save gas money for travel because you didn't have to go back but every other day... and if you were able to save the gas money from three trips in the week you might buy your wife and/or mother something nice for Mothers' Day like another Gee's so you could have two Gee's which would mean you would only have to go once a week. You are a genius. If I were you I would give your wife and/or mother a big kiss and hug and tell them thank you.
+LIam Vanmanen Hey Liam. Maybe you and Ethan's Outdoors could share the dictionary. madder means angrier. afternoon is one word. before has an e at the end. You should check with Frabill and see if they are looking for a spokesperson?? You never know.
+Greg Popovice yeah for sure but I mean I'll set it at night right where I go fishing. Then in the morning I'll pick it up and I fish twice a week on average and I end up putting a dozen back because I don't need 3.5 dozen.
Man, I've been looking for a good minnow trap. I never knew if the Frabills were worth it, but this helps me out big time. Funny: Rusty minnow trap beats the Frabill, lol.
Very great comparison. I would have never thought there would be that much difference in traps like that. Great video Heith. I'm gonna have to try trapping the Missouri river here and see what comes out of it for fishing. Still working on getting my home minnow tank set up to keep minnows around all summer.
Shawn Andera Thanks Shawn...I wish I could set a system like that up here but water in my town is so darn expensive when we go over our allowed limit per family...You should do a vid on your set up when you are done...Peps would appreciate that one brother...
You win and won't even argue. We wholesale fifty to sixty gallons at a time so yes we need lots of Minnows. We could never keep up with those dinky little traps. Be a waste of time. Less driving the better
I don't think my comment posted but I bought a frabil so I feel pretty stupid now if I can return it I will and thank u so much for this side my side comparison
DojoOG Just got around to answering questions...I hope you were able to bring the frabill back...You will catch minnows in it but not close to how many you will catch in a Gee's Trap...Plus the Gee's is made in the USA...
Right on brother some good catch there! Them frabills don't work to bad if you melt the shit off em in the fire pit. I gotta agree on the Gee's though they are the best store bought trap, cut the entrance hole out a bit bigger if you're after bigger minnows like suckers or creek chubs.
My last trap was a Gees and one thing to watch out for. I believe the fail on the Frabill is the welded 1" opening that complies with many state's regulations. I like the feel of the black coating but fish are all in on shiny stuff Haven't tried it yet. My open wire Gees was silver with 1" openings but with regular use use of loose internal weights and larger baitfish breaking in can increase the entrance/exit size. Easy fix as you go thing to do, I do believe the color and rough exit spikes on the Gees are an advantage in minnow retention. Might have to do a comparison myself as I have great luck with freezer bait. I save frozen shiners, chubs and suckers for the earliest Spring bite and the big dead minnie's rock! Deepest holes in tiny creeks with 5' holes! 4' works good in Ohio, USA. Pullies might be legal, LOL? I will ask!
I have 2 frabill minnow traps that I have had for a few years. I just bought 2 gees minnow traps to try out. I will use one frabill and one gees in the same location and show people the difference.
If you look at a Gee's G-40 galvanized original and compare it to the imported traps silver or black you will find many differences in the production of the traps. I know a little about this subject so please bear with me on the details. 1) Take a close look at the mesh on the Gee's. It is actually square. Most imports use expanded metal (diamond shape). The squares of the Gee's mesh offer a better visibility than the diamond shape. 2) The Gee's G-40 galvanized uses the "Big Ring" which is at the center of the trap with the hinges. The Big Rings are made on one machine only which keeps them virtually identical and ensures a tight fit. The imports use wire rings with welded hinges that are often misaligned and break off after a while. 3) The cone on the Gee's G-40 galvanized is left as rough cut open wire making it pointed and sharp. This prevents most baitfish from exiting the hole. The imports often weld a smooth ring on the cone which is less of a threat and makes it easier for escape from inside the trap. In addition the ring is visible and can lead the minnows to the exit. 4) The Gee's G-40 galvanized has a sufficient amount of galvanizing to prevent corrosion (within reason) but not so much that it decreases visibility thru the trap. Imports typically try to use a heavy expanded metal and or a vinyl coating which creates a smaller window of visibility. The Gee's has been around for over 100 years and is still being made the same way in the U.S.A. Just for kicks... If you know someone with a Gee's G-40 from some years ago... see if one half of your new Gee's G-40 will fit with it. I know it will. Thanks for asking,Greg PopoviceTackle Factory
There is definitely a big difference in those two traps. Nice bait Gonzo and hope you do well fishing. Later buddy and don't get your feet wet this year lol......Barry
He's calling the fish minnows but there were a variety of different types of small fish in those traps. I'd like to know what type of fish they really are. I'd like to put a couple in one of my aquariums and raise them instead of killing them. I'm gonna buy one of those traps.
Based on other videos, it seems like the bait likes the silver vs the black traps, so it probably isn't Frabil's issue, it is because of the color, so it is not a fair comparison, just saying.
Frabill was also black. Black minnow traps work less than standard silver ones. A brand of a minnow trap vs an identical rival company trap wont be that huge of a difference. Just the colorsm
Zombie Believer My guess is because it isn't made of a cheap black plastic and the Gees is silver...The black Frabill the minnows cant see inside...the Gees is being silver minnows get inside and eat the bait...The minnows on the outside see that and find the way in and they are comfortable that way knowing there are others inside...
Looks like you schooled the Frabill folks, but will they listen? Doubt it!! i think the Gee's are the only kind to be had around here anyway, that's the only kind i've ever seen...nice vid bud.
Ten dozen? I don't think you're able to count. Ten dozen would be 120. No way you have 120 between the two Gee traps. That water looks disgusting. Do you eat fish from there?
You showed the world things they never saw.
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Truth is reality. You nailed it!
Thanks for educating folks on the difference in performance! Too bad we are so conditioned to spending so little on cheep, poor quality imports. I really appreciate that GEES provides a choice. Thanks for the vid!

What is the difference between the two traps? Do the minnows escape through the sides or back out the end holes? Wondering....
We only have trout between 8 to 16 in , will minnows be good for them for bait???
rodney newbury No doubt...The trout there would go crazy that size over minnows...Best bait there is and better than spinners and spoons...
Ok..Thanks!
Is something wrong with the throats on the Frabill traps?
+WORM GITTER Yeah, they're connected to the rest of the trap:) D'oh!!
It's nice to see people showing what not to buy. Big difference in both traps. Great video buddy. Cheers
Rabbit Hunter Thanks brother and no doubt for sure...A few extra bucks well spent will save you time and money in the long run...Take care...
do you suppose any of those minnows could possibly be baby bass?
+Stanrossisboss 51 I have never caught a bass out of this pond in a minnow trap...
oh, i really wanna catch a mini bass and raise it, than release it back.
I've caught some in traps. Little things but a pain in but to keep. You are better off returning them when you can tell that they are bass. I made one but I didn't catch anything :-)
+Barry Wind "One is a different color than the other." Maybe that's part of the reason why one works better than the other. To catch different amounts, they must be different in some way.
Well minnow's tend too hold closer to shore anyway's, better chance's being off the old Lunch Menu !
Location, location , location
Nice haul of minnows. I'm going to look for some of those. Cheers.
MrPaulinmi Thanks and good luck buddy...
I had a frabill and put it off a bridge slowly and it broke in half. What do you use for bait?
End of The Line I have never had that happen but it don't surprise me...I use dog food and stale bread...best bait there is buddy...
Great video, but what causes the one trap to be better???
Maybe the silver color or the reflection???
bbcasting Thanks...I do believe the silver has a lot to do with it...The minnows can see through this trap...The black one they don't see through that's why they sit on top and eat the bait...The minnows see other minnows in the silver trap and it makes them feel comfortable going inside I believe...Thanks for watching and great question...

Great video, thanks for sharing. The leech is a nice extra bonus.
Fish OnLine Thanks...the leachs work great here in mid summer when the water warms up and the fish are not as active...

Walt O'bringer the color
Crap just bought a frabil I hope I can still make use out of it
Wow, what a difference. First time out paid for the trap easily. I gotta get me a Gee Trap this year. Thanks for the video Heith.
That was pretty impressive
Jason.
primalarcher Thanks bro...
All those end up in the washer. ?
***** Yes sir...Until they end up on my hook which some of them did already...
Where can I buy the Gee's minnow traps?
Straight forward demonstration! Well done Gonzo!
Todd Wittenmyer Thanks Todd...
What bait did u use
Bread and dog food☺
Huge difference Gonzo! Great comparison and why quality and just a few more dollars can be a better choice! Thanks for sharing... nice looking leeches too!
ok it's not about the quality but the fineness of the mesh
I have to differ on that...I have did a number of comparisons and the Frabill is actually junk but that is just my opinion...You may do good with them or another brand...I'm hooked on Gee's for life now...

Just look at the reviews on Amazon about the Frabill, It tells you everything you need to how they are not made very well.
I got a frabil and I thought the places I put them were bad! I'm gonna have to retry those spots with a better trap! Thanks
matthew zupetz I have did the same thing in the past...Spots that use to be good I thought went bad, it wasn't the spot it was the trap...
What are you using the minnows on? Crappie?
delicious fishes Mostly Brook Trout and on a jig head for Walleye when season opens but I do use them for Crappie also...I caught a few 12 and 13 inch Crappie today on accident and let them go...I will post that vid Thursday...Thanks for watching bud...
Holy crap man.... That's some minnows!!!! WOW... Good stuff Gonzo
Very cool! Buying one today! Thanks for the great video.
Nice haul of minnows bud!
Efish3 Thanks bud...
Is there a difference in price?
Ash Clemmons Yup...Frabill is like 8 bucks and the Gees is around 12 depending where you get it from...If you don't have any Gees traps around you then you have to go on ebay or amazon and they are around 15 to 20 bucks but you save a lot of money instead of having to buy bait in the long run...Plus Gees is made in the USA...Hope this helps...

Solid gear review bud! I don't trap minnows much but I know which one I will buy if I start.
Semper Outdoors Right on...Thanks for watching...I'm waiting for the next slap...
haha I will send out a challenge tonight for the weekend!
Happy Fishing Mate.
VB Ed Thanks Ed...
So other than color, the main difference I see in the traps is the hole size in the mesh,Gees being smaller and keeping the smaller baitfish better.
Gees that's a lot more minnows! really nice side by side comparison brother
backyardmeat Thanks...
Awesome video. I will probably buy one. My black ones barely catch any compared to those

how many did you catch

I have the black trap , I threw it off a bridge and sat up there and watched it , the minnows swam in and right back out !!
nice haul what a difference a good minnow trap makes
cabotbluegill No doubt Cabot...A few extra dollar goes along way when it comes to a good trap...

I will certainly do a video. Just trying to find a decent, low budget aerator for the stock tank I have.

Well, iffin ya ain't got the time to do it you could always send em up my way I'll use em for ya ;) haha

Me too I had the crappy black one and I'd catch 5-10 or 1 fat crawfish
Great video!!!
U earned a subscriber!
Sternal Chunk Thanks for watching and subbing buddy...
I use tiny slices of hot dogs in a frabil. Works fine for me. Maybe paint it silver...
Based on other videos, it seems like the bait likes the silver vs the black traps, so it probably isn't Frabil's issue, it is because of the color, so it is not a fair comparison, just saying.
That Gees smoked that Frabill. Good stuff Gonzo.
mojsmg Thanks buddy...The Gees proved itself many times over for me now and I will never buy a Frabill again...
nice turnout cool video
WOW Thats a lot of minnows
renemanjr123 Its a start but will need plenty more once my buddies and I start fishing harder...Thanks for watching bro...
Frabill was also black. Black minnow traps work less than standard silver ones. A brand of a minnow trap vs an identical rival company trap wont be that huge of a difference. Just the colorsm
with my rectangle mino trap I catch around 6 dosen
I have a gees trap and i love iy
so the poor bastard the stole my Frabill did me a favore,lol....thanks
sunnylandcamper no doubt...Now you can up grade to a real trap...You got the last laugh here...
I enjoyed your video the only thing is in the vehicle the lighting is way too dark to see actually you very well overall not bad video
Do you know why the Gee's is better???
Zombie Believer My guess is because it isn't made of a cheap black plastic and the Gees is silver...The black Frabill the minnows cant see inside...the Gees is being silver minnows get inside and eat the bait...The minnows on the outside see that and find the way in and they are comfortable that way knowing there are others inside...
I always set minnow traps in my stream and catch trout fry
Looks like you schooled the Frabill folks, but will they listen? Doubt it!! i think the Gee's are the only kind to be had around here anyway, that's the only kind i've ever seen...nice vid bud.
SwampDonkey530 Thanks brother...Frabill makes a lot of great stuff but the trap gets a thumbs down from me
What are u useing for bait
crazzyass2024 I use dry dog food and stale bread...
I am starting my own bait shop up here in maine and been trying to find the right traps and what the best to use for bait
Results speak for themselves.
***** No doubt buddy...Thanks for watching...
I have a gees minnow trap and in 5 minutes I cought 10 huge minnows

anthony heath Right on brother...Great bait and a good trap will bring plenty of fish...Thanks for watching and the comment...
Well if I was a minnow trapper, I know what trap I'd be using.
NLGhostWolf No doubt brother...
$490 3 points plus seat belt fine
Shoot, I caught more minnows in a 2 liter minnow trap I made Vs That Frail Bill...
Gees La Wees great job.
TheBullFrogMan Right on Frog...
Ten dozen? I don't think you're able to count. Ten dozen would be 120. No way you have 120 between the two Gee traps. That water looks disgusting. Do you eat fish from there?
Paint the black one silver and redo the comparison.
WOW!
Rickshaw Jack right on buddy...
wow! for a few more bucks and look how much more minnows you get.you just paid for the trap.take care
