I was a middle finger skratcher too for years, until i noticed how qbert was all pointer finger too, so i made the transition and i concur with all your observations. It allows for better precision and less exertion. There's an economy of motion with the pointer finger simply by virtue of being closer to the thumb as well, so it's a much more efficient way of skratching. I think us middle finger skratchers were a byproduct of being from the pre-vestax era, where faders were stiff as hell and required more strength and dexterity just to execute fast transforms. That's my theory.
I started with my middle finger my first year, then seen d-styles and qbert, so i tried it and liked it, ended up switching. Even tried to switching to the right turntable, but didnt work out.
I've been trying to use my index finger for my two clicks, transforms, and stabs, but I feel like it's just slower and weaker and wind up using the middle finger to help it out. Gotta be stubborn and keep at it, I guess.
Yeah it'll def be slower and weaker initially. But give it a try and see whether there is potential to sound better this way. If so, the strength will surely catch up. - Mike C
Go for it 👍 Will probably get tired quickly in the beginning, but definitely worth a try. I still use my middle finger if I’m about to do a crab; somehow it makes for an easier transition to that movement. - Mike
Yo, thanks for the tip! I was just thinking if it's worth re-learning all scratches with the index finger. I guess I'll invest some time in it after all. Also, what's that fancy device you're using? Never seen a needle not touching the record. How does it respond?
What up! I don’t think you’ll have to actually “re-learn” any techniques; it is a pretty easy transition. Initially I would get tired faster, because I wasn’t used to using that finger; but now it feels completely normal and natural. The device is called a Phase, just came out this year! It isn’t perfect but it works pretty well for cutting, and they will be upgrading the firmware soon. - Mike C
What up Omarock! You’re correct about the one click. It is a one-click orbit flare: one click forward and one click back, so 4 notes per cycle. Good eye! - Mike C

Yeah man, just like you said 💯
Be versatile same goes with record hand and what fingers you use and hand position every technique has a sweet spot
Dope! See you got that phase too!
Had to do it, lol! - Mike
Cool advice 🔥i have not practiced for a long time... good idea start again with this and the Phase dj! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Word! I like using mine, it'll be even better when they make firmware updates. - Mike C
Always scratched with the pointer finger on the fader but some years back started bringing in the middle if I need to transition into certain things.
Easier to transition into a crab for example, right?
@@SkratchSnobs Exactly!
Thanks guys for all these vids! This is such a logical tip and I will definitely start on this :)🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Glad that it's helpful! We'll keep makin em if people like em. - Mike C

There are dope lefty cutters for sure, such as Babu and Excess among others. Just gotta determine what works best for you. - Mike C

I’m back and forth with using my index and middle finger. But imma practice with just my index finger and see how it feels.

Can you break down the scratch at 4:32? It sounds like there are 2 clicks but I see you click once.

@@SkratchSnobs Thanks for clearing it up!
The same applies to hamster?
Possibly! Doesn’t hurt to try, right?
@@SkratchSnobs I guess so :)
Was that supposed to sound better because it seemed off time. No offense.
