Pirates came up with rum literally by accident because they were trying to keep their water and fruit juices clean and sweet, they failed at the clean part, got rum which was still drinkable and alcoholic and were very of the mind set well this is not half bad. But I very much believe it was the British navy who figured out the gun powder check trick some short time after because well, military supplies are not always honest, especially to the invading military 😂 or at least that is how both stories go as far as I have heard, I'm not sure of the historical accuracy, but I've been to sea and she can B**** nasty so you might as well drink if your on her bottoms up.

But they weren't. Or at least not all of them.
Really the central villain was a drug lord who wanted to make all drugs legal so she could run a legitimate buisness instead of an underground one and the final 'twist' villain was the Statemen whose goal was to kill all druggie because his wife (and yet to be born child) were killed by heroine addicts.
Technically they were all of Americam origin, but that's not saying much since both of those villains are just as likely to kill each other since their goals don't align.
I will say not have Channing do more in the movie was the real mistake.
