Kart Fighter (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Yoko Soft's 1993 unlicensed versus-fighter for the NES, Kart Fighter.
Played through as Mario.
Everyone's favorite NES-lockout circumvention artists at Taiwanese company Hummer Soft (developers of the unlicensed 1992 Street Fighter II NES port) brings us an original fighter, this time featuring the cast of Super Mario Kart!
The cheesiness of brazenly ripping off another company's IP aside, it's clear that the devs learned a lot from their previous project: put alongside SF2, Kart Fighter is undoubtedly the superior game. It makes far better use of the NES hardware with huge character sprites and better animations, fun and familiar music, and the controls are much easier to come to grips with. The whole thing feels much more polished, and favorably compares to Konami's NES TMNT Tournament Fighters, which is no small feat.
But isn't that mushroom background from Little Nemo? That was a bit unexpected, I've gotta say.
The game got a lot of internet attention awhile back when people began drawing comparisons between it and Super Smash Bros. And, while it's clearly not on par with a first-party Nintendo release, there's no denying the similarities between Kart Fighter and the N64 Smash Bros. game.
I really like this game. It looks great, the sound is a big improvement over SF2's, and who can deny the appeal of beating a friend to a pulp with their favorite Mario characters, all in strangely charming 8-bit graphics? Especially when you can knock around a "fun-size" Bowser, or nail the princess with a Shoryuken as payback for the number of times you've have to save her?
Some of these character names are pretty classic botch jobs too - who doesn't love Yossy the dinosaur?!

Lol
Just Fighting. Except that all characters used in Super Mario Kart are in the roster. Like he said (|No Karts Included|).
Kart Fighter is a huge step up from the company's previous unlicensed SF2 port, and is surprisingly close to the level of quality you'd find in officially produced titles. And who can say no to laying a smackdown on the Mario Kart cast years before Smash Bros.' release?
NintendoComplete I also heard that made sonic the hedgehog for nes
Please tell me you're being ironic about this, I've played this game before and the controls just felt straight-up janky and hard to play.
You should try Mortal Kombat 2 Special, I think that's one of the most polished games Hummer has developed
+SpunkyBandy I dunno, after I got used to them, I thought they were pretty okay!
NintendoComplete i dont know about that, its ok compared to garbage like cheetah man 2 or something like that but its pretty glitchy
1:51 Luigi really said "YOU THOUGHT KOOPA WORKED ALONE??"
1:50 Hummer team predicted i hate You.exe
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was an influence
I know whenever I played any Mario Kart, I always asked myself "How do I get out and start a fistfight with one of the other drivers?"
The answer to that question has finally been answered in high fashion & in genuine NES style👍😎👌
Answer: either play this or play Grand Theft Auto Online and dress up as Mario.
If you still have that thought of fighting one of the other racers, Super Mad Champ is definitely the way to go.
This is a true surprise. They managed to put 8 characters in and, even if they look out of some crap made under Nintendo's license during the same years, those sprites are so big. It's fun to think of it as a proto-Smash Bros, even if unofficial.
The real smash bros game before the official one I did a search this one came in 1993 and the first smash game on N64 it was in 1999 wonder if Nintendo saw this and got the idea for smash
@@baders3274 look for Masahiro Sakurai's channel, he and his team created a generic fighting game first, but then to show to Nintendo's big bosses they decided to use Nintendo characters in order to showcase their idea
I surprised this even exists. This would be the type of game my buddies would of played when we were teenagers.
Absolutely, I'm going to get a copy right now if I can👍🙏😎😁👌
I played this on Gameboy Advance and I can't believe I played this as a kid, realizing that it's not officially made by Nintendo. So basically, that's my first Super Smash Bros game.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 You mom buyed this game?
@@thedude14972 No. But my cousin switched cartridges.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 oh
I remember buying one of those cheap 500 in 1 GBA cartridges, and this was one of the games that I played the most lol and now I’m here searching it up at 6am from random nostalgia
Gotta say, I'm loving this interpretation of the Mario universe.
Me: Mom Can we SSB?
Mom: No, we have SSB at Home
Smash Bros at Home:
Not bad
Better than nothing
I love how everyone is about the same height and then Bowser is almost a head shorter than Mario
LMAO'd this!
My favorite part of this video is Mario's post round win celebration where he looks to the screen and gives the thumbs up (albeit not directly at the screen) just like Ken from Street Fighter. Classic. Just classic right there. LMMFAO!!!!
"Obviously, There was no mode-7 on the original Nintendo NES, so we turned it into a fighting game!" - Hummer Team
Bowser Needs some Mushrooms.
This by far is the coolest thing I've ever seen done unofficially on the NES period, now somebody tell me where the hell this game was 30 years ago🤔😨👍😎😉😁😊👌
Out of 10 games presented for licence only usually 2 or 3 were approved ! The rest went goodness knows where but anything not deemed as wholesome or out of the normal was dismissed. So that’s why homebrew is so good it’s out of the censors hands
@@tabsntoot Thank the heavens for Homebrew games. This one in particular was so we'll made it should of been an actual release just like the Super Mario Excitebike game that was made exclusively for the SNES Satellaview. It was a grand tragedy they didn't capitalize on how big of a deal that would of been. I guess they figured they would use that game as leverage in an attempt to sell the Satellaview but it backfired on them.
Wow, Bowser is not as big as he should be.
CNFunnyJon he felt so ashamed over the years that he felt so belittled
He's all short and fat
The real reason is they were running out of graphic space, and he was the last character added to the game.
You mean Koopa
@@thatonestockphoto6143 Yes, but in North America, he is also known as Bowser.
My 5 year old ass way back when tried to tell my family about this game and all I could form was “Mario Fighter.” We found it eventually and they were surprised to see it exist
0:17 Sonic Got Chaos Emerald.
Sonic can now turn into super sonic
This is an unused sound effect in Somari.
Jajajajajaja el Super Smash Bros para la PolyStation
This is the Super Mario Kart's intro screen lol, I didn't see this before
Nintendo should have licensed this. The only critique I can really give it would be the music being pretty horrendous. But man, this should have been the precursor to Smash Bros.
+MFields2178 Who knows, maybe someone at Nintendo was inspired by it :) It's not like they'd ever admit it, but it's possible. They had to know this existed when it was so widely available
Peach fight being Koopa Beach counts?
I think the music makes it hilarious!
The music is not just horrendous, it’s also stolen from a bunch of random games
Songs such as Super Mario Kart, Songs Without Words, and Momotarou Densetsu II. The others, unknown them.
1:51 "You thought Koopa worked alone?"
*Ignited hatred theme plays
This is probably one of the few fighting games without the "ready" screen.
The Kart is the friends we made along the way. Which is none on this one-sided massacre.
I never thought this game exist back then.
The sound that plays when you press start is the Chaos emerald jingle. God I love bootlegs.
Select the highest difficulty for a “proper” the end screen after you beat the last fight!
The Game Grumps brought me here.... I especially love in that episode when Luigi defeated Peach and Arin says,"I deed it, I beat up a waaaman."

Shut up mentioning anything that has to do with crappy sega is an insult to Nintendo.
The graphics are so amazing
Dude… I JUST found out about this game, and it looks like it was amazing. I will track it down!
This is what happens when the road rage gets physical
this game needs to have tournaments
I just noticed that the sound quality of this game sounds like a Game Boy
*game boy sounds like nes
I noticed the the sound quality of this game sounds like ass. (Because it’s made by hummer team)
I remembered playing this.
Whoever created this game predicted one of the best fighting games
Brilliant
The very first Super Smash Brothers
I just remember this game being bizarre af but really interesting
9:42 wow Bowser is like really small compared to Mario err I mean Koopa
Mario isn't' in this game there's only Mari
I liked this version. Even being a hack game, its quality is good.
It’s not a hack.
@@jadsi you're right. It is a unlicensed game
I miss playing this on Gameboy 😭
LMAO, shame you couldn't throw Luigi into the lava there. xD This is... well, quite something else. Famicom really had it all. :D
Ok 2 Questions(If this account is Active still)Number One: Throw luigi in the lava like the I hate You creepypasta.
Number 2:I agree
3:24 Mario on the Lava
I REMEMBER THIS GAME 😱😱😱😱😱😱
Where did you play this?
Yossy, mon personnage préférer de Nintendo.
I wanted to make a petition... Its possible that you could continue doing the complete walktrought of NES' pirate or unlicensed games? Pleaseee :-P. Congratulations for your work playing the games from the star to the end. Its a Titanic work.
Zebastyan I've done quite a few, you can find them in my NES playlist. I dunno if I'm going to go all-out with them, but sure, I do have some more coming up in the near future.
Thank you much friend. As a sugestion try Mortal Kombat ports for NES :-D
Didn't realize the title theme is a remix of Super Mario Kart's years later
Mario's been drinking again!
And who can say yes to laying a smackdown on the Mario Kart cast years before Smash Bros.' release?
I love Mario
My favorite character is Nokonoko.
Jajaja.
Kart Fighter deserves a remaster with Smash bros psychics.
Peach has strength when she fights Bowser
1:51 no way this bootleg predicted the I HATE YOU creepypasta
A prequel of world heros 2.
Best game ever
other ideas for pirate games is, kof 98 and 99 and top fighter 2000 for sega, dbz final bout too
Game:A sky arena
Also Game:"SNES Koopa Beach 1 and 2 plays"
Better than the first Street Fighter for sure!
Who’s here after seeing Kung Fu Peach in the Princess Peach Showtime trailer?
Little wonder why Capcom never did an NES port of SF2. Imagine playing this with just two buttons.
I'm surprised and also disappointed that Luigi's the second fighter making him place or look like a weak early fighter, but damn, I got lost to him as a noob on my first try for only knowing basic attacks
Mario the fighters.
I remember this bootleg.
Before SSB64, There Where Kart Fighter
Final boss: Stunted-growth Bowser!
you know all the moves while i only know like 3
Top game nes 100%.
I wish Nintendo licensed this. And what if they added it for switch online?
ScareScraper Totals of F2 14:47 Penguin Toadette
Short for " Kartridge"
One of the few decent fighters on Family
This game does not show the V.S. screen and the winner screen.
"Yossy" is a mistranslation of Yoshi's name that was seen on various official things in Japan. Well, not really a mistranslation, just rather a mishap with how Japanese people used to write Romaji.
More info about it here: legendsoflocalization.com/qa-why-is-yoshi-sometimes-called-yossy/
As for "Nokonoko", "Kinopio" and "Koopa", those are the original Japanese names for Koopa Troopa, Toad, and Bowser respectively.
I for the life of me can't explain "Mari". I guess that one is just a random mistake.
The reason behind mari because it is a translation of mario into taiwanese also mario in taiwanese is malio and mari was one of mario's names in taiwan and this bootleg is by a taiwanese company called "Hummer Team"
mind of developers of this game
NOW I HAVE BECOME DEATH THE DESTROYER OR WORLDS!!!

@@dmcmusiclover2995 True
It's funny how they base the game on Super Mario Kart, which is all about Mario characters racing around Mario environments, but without the gokarts, leaving only a Mario fighting game. It would make more sense to just call it "Mario Fighter". Were they trying to avoid getting noticed by Nintendo?
i know this game because of wii nes emulator
Where’s the tier list for this?
Its pretty odd to see Bowser I mean KOOPA being like 3ft only and a being a dwarf compare to Mari
Street fighter for nes
That sky stage music sounds so familiar but i can't telk
It's from the first Mario Kart!
👍👍👍
It's the worst rendition of the Koopa Beach music I've ever heard.
The title music, also ported from Super Mario Kart, is pretty decent though.
So the health does go down fast if you know how to play it ;)
The controls are actually fine, not too complicated. You just need to find the instructions and practice a bit to get used to them.
This is just street fighter but with Mario characters
Yeah, exactly, because it reminds me of that game.
WHY MARIO?! WHY WOULD YOU FIGHT YOUR BROTHER?!
Ask Ryu why he fights Ken.
Super Smash Bros you dummy!
When I hear that name I think of battling race cars.🚗🔥. Who agrees with me?
Graphic remind me first Mortal Kombat bootleg
It's rather like street fighter 2
@Joey The Marill Fan it uses the same engine as the street fighter 2 bootleg they made.
Street Fighter but with Mario. Hmmmmm.... $$$
