" Fire Woman" and " She Sells Sanctuary" are a must. Great band and vocalist.
Great band. Thanks for getting the Cult on here! Check out the tune “She Sells Sanctuary” or “American Horse”. They got a long list of great tunes. You guys rule. Keep it up 🤘😎🤘
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
Live at the House of Strombo

This and She Sells Sanctuary as well as Wild Flower just kick it. Plain and simple.
100%. My two favorite Cult songs - this one I can never get enough of and same with She sells Sanctuary, which was the first one of their songs that I fell in love with when I heard it in the summer of 1985. 👏👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤❤❤🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
and Fire Woman!
Ian Astbury is a very underrated frontman. He still sings with the same power today.
_'Electric"_ by _'The Cult'_ is one of my favorite hard rock albums. It sounds like a more varied and melodic _AC/DC_ at it's core, with a sprinkling of other rock influences... 🤘
The lead singer, Ian Astbury, toured with the surviving members of The Doors for a while. He definitely gave off some Morrison vibes while performing.
I saw Ian with the Doors. He knocked it out of the park. In fact to be honest that performance even eclipsed the few Cult shows I attended. Its as if Morrisins spirit was with him.
The Cult and The Doors - 'Soul Sister' Bands..🖤🤎
Yup I saw him play with them too in London in 2003
There are definitely some Morrison-esque characteristics about his voice. Same with Billy Idol.
Yes! He's really the only one who gets close to Morrison, the singing, the presence and vibe. The Doors' members loved working with him.
Great live band music sounds great song
The Stones song is "Start Me Up". Yes the riff is very close and this is not the only song that borrowed it. Stones came first with their song but you could even find Chuck Berry riffs similar. Love the video version of this song !!!
And…the end reminds me of old school AC/DC.
They did not leave the tapedeck in my car for an entire summer.
Summer and 17.
ALL the feels.💜
The Cult in this album, Electric, brought clear influences of bands like AC/DC, Doors, Rolling Stones and a bit of the 80’s glam rock era. For those who love a good hard’n’heavy rock album, this is a must!
This entire album is a rocker.
This whole album Is STR8 FIRE.
This song absolutely rocks!!! Excellent reaction.
The best of the best of the 80’s
This is a banger! The cult are a great rock group
The CULT has soooo much ATTITUDE, I love it 😅😊
We saw them live when they opened for Billy Idol and they sound just like their studio records
I got Metallica tickets for my 19th birthday in July 1989, and these guys opened for them at the Philadelphia Spectrum (RIP). They did this song, and Ian Astbury can belt it out live, too. Nice review as always, and take care 🙂
Another great underrated band that is a must-listen. Every song on every album is great. Absolutely MORE ""The Cult"!!!
I always liked The Cult but it wasn't until no finally saw them live that I fully appreciated the guitar playing of Billy Duffy.
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. Nice choice.
One of the best bands ever. Severely under-rated. They have a catalog that is just deep.
The whole 'The Electric' record is great!
"Fire Woman"
"Sweet Soul Sister"
"Rain"
"She Sells Sanctuary"
"Wild Flower"
"Lil Devil"
"Edie"
The Cult is fire
These guys turned from post punk goth psychedelic pop to full on guitars blazing rock stars. My faves are "Coming Down" "Sacred Life" "Edie"
One of the best bands of late eighties and nineties.
Rick Rubin's first rock album he produced.
👀
They were a great live band back in the day
Ian Astbury has such a unique voice. Great Live !
Great album by a great band.
She Sells Sanctuary is my favorite. They had several radio hits in the 80's and early 90's. Fire Woman, Rain and Lil Devil are some other good ones.
Sweet Soul Sister👍👍
Also may check out Resurrection Joe as a earlier track that has some proper funk in the bass
Agreed, they should start with She Sells Sanctuary? Best to start with earlier material and work your way up to see how they evolved, then they will appreciate the Sonic Temple material more.
Killer band. Finally did them. At a time, lead singer toured with the original DOORS to emulate him - did a great job. Band just released a new record, one of their best in decades. They went through 4 phases - alternative goth, alternative, rock, and then heavy metal. Their best was goth - alternative phase......rock was their most successful.
Yup I saw him sing with Ray, Robbie and John at their London gig, a great experience
I knew they've never stopped touring but didn't know about their new album...will check it out!
Saw these guys open for Metallica in 1989 on their "...And Justice For All" tour, great 1-2 PUNCH ❗️❗️
Me, too! I saw them at Memorial Auditorium in Burlington, VT! Metallica had promised to play every state, no matter how small.
Btw it was the loudest concert too! It was at Pine Knob Music Theater and we sat behind where they did the lights and what not in the lower bowl and my God was it loud...but clear!
Saw it in gvl sc
Saw the Cult with Billy Idol in Vancouver years ago. Great show. Keep rockin guy's!😃🇨🇦
That would have been FIRE!
An English band that sells out stadiums in the U. K.and plays clubs when touring the states.
In the late 80's The Cult, Kings X, Living Colour, Fishbone, Faith No More, Janes Addiction all opened the door for 90's Grunge ( yet don't get credit deserved).
The Cult were initially marketed as alternative rock ( goth) and slowly evolved into hard rock At the height of hair metal which they clearly were not
Next " She Sells Sanctuary"
From previous album.
Best to start with earlier material snd work your way up to see how they evolved.
FISHBONE!!!!
Much like Stooges, Dolls, VU, MC5, Death are often forgotten as paving the way for punk. All the bands you mention played a major part to build the grunge thing. Pixies as well.
@@artis1969
Perfect analogy.
Somehow never noticed the Stones' Start Me Up riff connection. Yeah, got that Robert Plant and early unhinged Zep like Heartbreaker sound.
You should check out the official video for Fire Woman to see how they perform and how Ian Astbury, the singer, moves and his total rock star presence and charisma. They were all over MTV in the 80s/90s.
Yaaassss!
This is another band that sounds the best in your car where you crank it up loud af. :D
I love it!! Channeling his inner Robert Plant! That shows how far you brothers have come!! There's soooo much more to come.
Wow was just thinking would love a cult reaction. One of best 80s band. Ian had one of best voices in rock. 🔥
This is a good rabbit hole. Well worth your time. “She Sells Sanctuary” is a must. This is the middle album of a fantastic three album run starting with “Love” and ending with “Sonic Temple”. Some great songs in that three pack. You won’t be disappointed.
_KICK ASS!_
Such a fun band that has a really great catalog of music again a great reaction always glad your taking an interest in so many different styles of music
MTV use that riff and that baby baby baby baby on their commercials all the time back in the 80s!
Hell yeah. Didn't think you guys would find this song. Awesome!
During the 80's i was lucky enough to see The Cult at a local venue on the Love album tour, then this song came out, it was a bit of a departure from the psychedelic stuff on Love and very different from the drum machine driven stuff of the the earlier Death Cult, but it still had me hooked, the the next gig they did to promote the new album up in London was amazing.
Great band , underrated they had lots of great songs🎉 watch the video. She sells sanctuary, wildflower, Fire woman, …more
🤘😎 the Cult were awesome! I saw them in 2013 in Nashville Tn. A great show! But they wouldn't play Fire Woman. It was billed as a tour of the Electic Album. But they played other songs from the rest of the albums. But not Fire Woman.
The band themselves are not fond of the album they did called Sonic Temple. Thats the album Fire Woman comes from. They thought the production was too slick and not a proper representation of what they sounded like. They much preferred the raw sound of the Electric album despite Sonic Temple being a bigger album saleswise.
20 years ago. Around then. The remaining Doors went on tour, and this singer sat in for the long departed Morrison. Saw it live. And it was a great show. Loved it. He didn't seem like he was really pretending or copying Morrison. Yes, he sounds like Morrison, and had similar stage presence, but that's how Ian Asbury is naturally. He's Morrisonish. I thought he was great.
I can't believe you listened to the Cult!! Loved them since the 80s, they really rock out. Fire Woman, She Sells Sancuary, Rain, Love, Sweet Soul Sister etc. They're still touring and are in top form. They're British. Saw them live w/Billy Idol and an unknown Lenny Kravitz opened for them, too.
Stones Start me Up was released 1981 six years before this. Apart from this similarity this another kind of rock. Cult has made very good rock musikant has great singer.
How did I not know about The Cult???
Great song from a great band. Electric is a kick ass album
This is a great rock album. I throw it on when I need a rev up!🤩
You nailed it with The Stones reference - and that song came decades before this one did. This is the sound of a band that grew up on The Stones, Zeppelin, and AC/DC. And of course, Jim Morrison.
Their lead singer, Ian Astbury, got moves like Jagger.
The Stones song your thinking of is Start Me Up which came out in 81. This came out in 85. Saw them open for Billy Idol. Fire Woman is another great one
Killer tune. Start me up came out in 81. This came out in 88.
Never made the start me up connection. The riff is similar though Billy Duffy's tone and approach is so different it becomes something different
I saw them on this tour and the opening band was called Guns-n-Roses.
Yep Start Me Up came first but this is similar
Should watch the video
The Cult - Awesome Souls , Don't Let the Name dissuade you.. Amazing Band w very awesome tunes! Check out 'She Sells Sanctuary' &/or 'Rain' for epic songs by this band.
Sweet Soul Sister
Nice choice, The Cult was on heavy rotation in my life in the very late 80s/early 90s. Love. They have many songs that are total bangers - Here Comes the Rain and Sanctuary in particular
Love this, my favorite band after Led Zeppelin, Ian Asbury legendary frontman She Sells Sanctuary in my opinion, their best song along with Rain
Electric IMO is their best album. Later albums were more popular, but this album was raw and powerful. Wildflower, Peace Dog, or Aphrodisiac Jacket... you can't go wrong.
The Stones song you’re thinking of is Start Me Up, and I definitely hear it. The Cult is a very underrated band IMO. Check out Fire Woman next. This song was a big hit in the strip clubs!
Wonderful Band
Ian Astbury a Frontman’s Frontman. Billy Duffy pulling out his inner Mick Ronson on Guitar 🎸
“Fire Woman” should be next. Straight Rocket with a Killer Groove 🔥🔥🔥
Here we go! My “neck” of the woods.. WORD 🍻🐟🫧
Yeah, the riff on 'Love removal machine' (from 1987) was similar to The Rolling Stones' 1981 song 'Start me up'... They were a big influence on The Cult - guitarist Billy Duffy is British... so is vocalist Ian Astbury. The volatile duo formed The Cult in the early 80's (initially called Southern Death Cult).
The Cult debuted in 1984 w/ 'Dreamtime'... followed it up w/ the album 'Love' (1985) that yielded the hit single - 'She sells Sanctuary'... The next album called 'Peace' was scrapped and the band asked famed producer Rick Rubin to help the band make a better record... 3rd album 'Electric' was released in 1987 and became a platinum success in the 'hair metal' era, but The Cult were well ahead of the pack musically.
4th album 'Sonic Temple' (1989) became their biggest album w/ the hits 'Fire woman' ... 'Edie (Ciao baby)'... Drummer Matt Sorum did the tour before he joined Guns N' Roses in 1990... Subsequent albums - 'Ceremony' (1991) and 'The Cult' (1994) were commercial disappointments and the band split up in 1996.
Emerging from hiatus in 1999 to tour, The Cult finished a new album 'Beyond good and evil' (2001) ... but Astbury and Duffy were at odds again and split in 2003... They reunited again in 2007 and released 'Born into this' w/ new members and were successfully touring again... The Cult has been popular to this day w/ new albums - 'Choice of weapon' (2012)... 'Hidden city'' (2016) and 'Under the midnight sun' (2022).
The Cult has been one of the most influential bands in hard rock music.
Other hits by The Cult - 'Wildflower' ... 'Rise' ... "Lil' devil" ... 'Sweet soul sister' ... 'The Witch' ... 'Rain' ... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
I like She Sells Sanctuary!
FYI: When The Doors did a reunion tour they tapped Ian Astbury as a replacement for Jim Morrison's replacement 👍
If you think The Cult is a crazy name, consider that singer Ian Astbury started off in a band called Southern Death Cult. He then formed a band with guitarist Billy Duffy called Death Cult, which later was shortened to The Cult. Try their song, "Sweet Soul Sister."
Electric is a true rock and roll masterpiece !!!
One of the best bands! 👌 I still crank their tunes on the regular. Keep going. Aphrodisiac Jacket is a banger, hint hint. 😉
Start Me Up came out in the 70s, before this song but I never put the two together. Interesting observation.
I beleive their name is a shortened version of their original name when they were a club punk or goth metal band, the Death Cult.
The drummer on this song later joined Guns and Rose's.
"Start Me Up" - the similarity didn't occur to me until you guys mentioned it.
In my opinion this whole album is the top 3 or so , in the 80s . It rivals Zeppelin 1 and 2 and even Boston's first. I wore that cassette tape out when it was released.
Funny story. The Cult was playing in Los Angeles. They were out and the lead singer, Ian Asbury chased axel rose. Axel knew he’d get beat badly. Those British dudes were tough Ian was prone to jump off stages and beat the crap outta folks. Just how he rolled.
bought this cassette in 87, entire album is great, still a fav
You guys need to do a live if you haven’t yet. Thinking it would be a blast. This band has a few good radio plays and a few deep dives. Thanks for the reaction.
Hello La & Che, here's an artist you've reacted to before and seemed to enjoy his work. "Joe Cocker - Now That The Magic Has Gone" (by the Channel: DJ-Yuri BistrickyHc @Punkrock - Bluess Jazz) --This song was from the album called "Night Calls" released in 1992. Thanks for sharing and have a great day.
Gotta listen to FIRE WOMAN by the CULT
Saw Billy Idol open for them in ahh 86 .
Never put this and START ME UP together but now that you mention it... Riff is similar but the groove is totally different. The Cult were supercool back in the 80's even if they didn't always "look" supercool.
One of the reasons I picked up a Cult album is that I read they were influenced by Zep, and with their use of space, that's a classic Zep influence. The song you're thinking of is Start Me Up, which came out a few years before this song. The guitar riff is similar at times but comes and goes. As a guitar player of some forty years, I can tell you that it's almost impossible to not create a riff that doesn't sound like something that's already been played in a song. Also, the lyrical melody is different from the Stone's song. The Cult did some solid, albeit brief work in the realm of kick-ass rock 'n' roll, classics like Fire Woman, Rain, Wild Flower, and Sweet Soul Sister. Good stuff.
The Stones song is Start Me Up.
The singer, Ian Astbury, was also heavily influenced by Jim Morrison. He even toured with the surviving members pf the Doors and did a great job.
Hey Fellas, I know Gentle Giant doesn't get the clicks but please listen to In a Glasshouse by them ( on your own is fine. Even just to open yourselves up to a new brilliance in composition. I like the heck out of your opinions. Keep'em coming my fellow music lovers.
The whole album "Electric" kicks ass!
“Start Me Up” is what you’re thinking.
Wolf Child Blues, Revolution, The Witch.
Dude was like a second coming of Jim Morrison if he fronted an 80s hard rock band.
The whole album rocks. 🙃👍
Edie (Ciao Baby) is another great Cult song.
dudes you guys rule man! Would love to see you react to Meat Beat Manifesto's God O.D. pt. 1. I'm loving your reactions to all the classics. Keep on rocking brothers!
Great album 🤘💣🤘
Great stuff, She Sells Sanctuary ❤ don't miss that one guys it's their killer track
This cassette was a must play if I was a little tipsy and had to drive home. I no longer condone this activity. 😂😂☠️☠️
never thought of it until you said it, but the STONES song your thinking of is START ME UP. this album was THE CULT getting out of their goth rock sounded and just channeling there AC/DC, ZEPPELIN influence for sure big difference from anything they did earlier. try SHE SELLS SANCTUARY, RAIN or HORSE NATION. you’ll see what I mean. I loved that early stuff. It had a native american vibe to it.
You gotta hit “Peace Dog”
Billy Duffy just playing his own sh*t with reckless abandon… Don’t know what that means but it was a kick in the teeth back then! 😂
Hey guys, check out their song Fire Woman the live video!
