Here's a fun challenge. Brilliant moments in otherwise not-so-great films. Even some of the worst films manage to convey something every now and again.
Try film ''The Aviator'' as well if you want to witness a true story, DiCaprio and directing by Scorsese. Very underrated ( ok, ok... it's overlooked, happy now? :D ), never seen anybody mention it besides Cinefix in a video about use of colour and in a video where they mentioned how the film didn't deserve an Oscar.
I like this channel very much because you guys take a movie like Everest, that was overseen by the audience, and find deeper meanings and craftmanship from the filmmakers giving us a new view!!!
In Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige", there's a great moment where Christian Bale unveils his new secret magic trick, but we don't see the ending. We just see Michael Caine's and Hugh Jackman's reactions to it. It's beyond brilliant how it builds curiosity, excitement and tension. We NEED to see this trick. We have to figure out how it works. Which relates to the whole theme of the film, which is that finding out the truth will be disappointing and heartbreaking and will cost us everything.
I agree! That shot seriously gave me the chills first time I saw it! Because of the setup, the sound effects that are played over the close up on Hugh Jackman's face and then his expression, we have everything we need in order to know exactly what just went down. A lesser film maker would have just shown it and spoon fed the audience.
Underrated means to be not as popular as they should be and by that definition those films do fit the sense of the word. Sure its more popular than Everest but catch me if you can is by far some of Di Caprio and Hanks least known work and room fits as a cult film as it is loved by film buffs but it not nearly known as much by the general public.
I fucking LIVE for CineFix's lists. The lists are so goddamn amazing all time, and they actually discuss the things in depth, unlike some other list channels that throw together a top 10 list in 5 minutes with 50 red arrows and circles in the thumbnail.
Everytime "Catch me if you can" comes on, i watch it. No matter how far in the movie, i immediately drop my phone, my pants and my newborn child to watch it.
I really want to have a coffee chat with you about movies bro. The way you unfold these brilliant moments in movies, it's just another brilliant moment itself.
I have to give myself some props on this one, I’ve never seen Everest but at the 4:57 second mark I heard the word ropes, than later upon exiting the tent I heard the suggestion to “pack light” l immidiately knew what was coming, props to the director for smart story telling
Why do you feel the need to insult a movie entirely unrelated to the video? I mean the movie was shit but this is the equivalent of that one guy trying to gain publicity for his channel on popular videos, but film video wise.
I haven't yet seen "The Room" and were it recommended by any other channel I probably would have just watched the spoilers here, but I sincerely trust CineFix's opinion on these things, so I shall return on a later date having given it a sconce.
agree! correctly another great movie which deserve more attention especially if you are a boxxy software user like me and have all movies ever made for free
I thank CineFix for showing me movies I haven't watched yet. Now my grandparents are baffled when they hear me talking about movies that were released before I was even born.
Everest was such a great movie, with its use of CGI (nearly all mountain shots and a bunch of basecamp as well), its use of sound and music (incredibly loud and chaotic on the mountain to cut to almost complete silence the moment after), its use of negative space (showing things that AREN'T there are as important as things that ARE) and… the acting, off the roof from everyone involved.
Some brilliant moments which should be featured here: - "My turn" from _Serenity_ - The "Leaning" duet from _Night of the Hunter_ - The scientist's "They said I was mad!" scene from _Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex_ - "Walk this way" from _Young Frankenstein_ - "He's coming to get you, Barbara" from _Night of the Living Dead_ - "You just shot an unarmed man!" from _Unforgiven_ - "You magnificent bastard! I've READ YOUR BOOK!" from _Patton_
You guys are the amazing!!!!!!!!!! Keep the amazing work up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please some do some top ten videos for: 1) music scores 2) comedy characters 3) sequels 4) franchises 5) cameos 6) musicals 7) fourth wall breaks
I think what makes a great film is not spoon-feeding ideas to the audience but letting them figure out things for themselves. A bit like CineFix, who never dumb down their videos but treat their subscribers with a certain respect.
This is BY FAR the best cinema channel on youtube, it's exactly what I expected and it delivers everytime. Love the content and the way it's exposed. Also a great source for unconventional and less known movie. Awesome work, keep it up.
How about you guys try to do 10 best films of certain decades. Why they were good then and still hold up now. That would be a lot of list but would be interesting to get into film history.
CMIYC: Did anyone else notice how DiCaprio's character "disappears" at 2:15, just after someone walked by in the foreground then stays "gone" as Hanks moves his head towards the left and then you barely "catch" DiCaprio again? That was a subtle but brilliant piece of cinematography.
Pretty much every moment in Jaws was brilliant. A special mention for 1962's Lawrence of Arabia when the lit match becomes the rising Sun. Truly one of the greatest visual transitions of all time.
Nice to see Catch Me If You Can getting some love! You guys should do a Things You Didn't Know video about it. The movie & the true story are both full of fascinating details! (Frank also taught as a college professor at BYU, he really did get paid for sex by an unwitting hooker, Leo who was 28 but looked 17 was cast to play Frank whose cons worked because he was 17 but looked 30, real Frank has a cameo arresting Leo, etc.)
Catch Me If You Can makes you appreciate the art of film making. Everything is so detailed, the dialogue is brilliant, the acting is superb. One of very few films I'd give a perfect score of 10/10.
One of my absolute favorite scenes in the world is the one in Room where Jack starts running from the truck. Few scenes have ever transported me like this one did. It connected with the sensation you have in those dreams where you can't run, your body is too heavy and you can't breathe. It was amazing
Im so glad u guys did a piece on Room. I barely watched it last week and was blown away. Everything about that movie is just so great. Keep up the good work Cinefix.
I love how you just let that long moment from Room play on its own for so long. That movie is so gut-wrenching and visceral that I was immediately transported back and feeling the same sensations Jack was all over again. That kid did a fantastic job and Brie Larson deserved every inch of that Oscar.
I love your brilliant sound editing. You utilize odd edits and breaks, even uneven tempo and pitch to create a distinctive sound and to direct the viewer's attention. It's similar to the accidental sound editing from A Charlie Brown Christmas Special that is so iconic and was never duplicated in the latter specials. You've made a gutsy choice of deliberately utilizing what most sound editors would call "mistakes" in order to create something as iconic and artistic as the films you talk about. Bravo.
Your channel makes me feel like I already knew this, because you explain things so simply. I feel like a doofus for not already being the owner of this channel (all because you present film analysis in a perfect way) i guess i can make do by discussing all the awesome things you guys state about film with my friends, and sharing your tamer videos to them. We need a mystery science theatre with you two guys just reviewing amazing parts of movies. I love this channel.
Glad to see ‘Catch Me If You Can’ getting some recognition. It’s not perfect by any means, but it has some damn great scenes and is entertaining as hell.
When you said Room, had a mild panic attack and wondered which scene you could be talking about - the football throwing scene, the breast cancer scene(s) but the relief when I realised there was no 'The' - whew! Also, can you guys serious-analyse The Room, would be such fun!
These are all great observational moments that we recognize upon further study. What about the ones you always see coming, but are still caught off guard...like when you notice the camera focusing on one person inside a car and out their window. It ALWAYS ends with that side of the car getting t-boned.
You really need to add the scene towards the end of Someone In The Crowd song in La La Land, where Mia comes out of the restroom, and while she walks, the dancers just synchronize their hand movements in a way that they are making way for her entry...Beautifully shot, probably some of the best cinematography ever and the score which accompanied it and the adrenaline rush that followed with the lyrics after it, the scene was pure artistry and magic...
I've just spent the night binging your videos and have to say that the thoughtfulness, knowledge, and was of delivery that you guys put into your videos is a true joy to consume. I genuinely appreciate that your analyses of these films run the full spectrum of human emotion, which is refreshing considering that it is easy to straight for the edgy content of film and forego the wonderfully splendid and touching moments the medium of film has given us. One thing that I have noticed in your film critiques however is a lack of brilliant moments from what are typically called kids or family movies. You've briefly mentioned a few in previous videos (the waltz in Sound of Music for example), but I believe that are more than a few moments of brilliance in many of these films that make them worth watching, and such a video may even inspire some young people to appreciate how good films are crafted.and if you can fit in a top five parent/child connections video, that'd probably force a few sentimental folks like me to choke up. And now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go have a catch with my old man.cheers
The thing is that now he has this reputation of being a great child actor so he has all of this pressure which is hard to deal with as an adult let alone a child. Directors can't expect to just throw him into any movie and have the film succeed. Sometimes an actor can only do so much you also need good writing and direction for performances to succeed. That is what worked for "Room" and didn't work for his other films. So it isn't always good enough to be a good actor you also need a good agent who can get you auditions for directors who will utilize his talents well
cinefix voice "the juxtaposition of two wildly conflicting topics showcases the inner cacophony of Johnny's mind, revealing a tormented, frightening character of unparalleled depth"
Matt Combs it may seem completely random but when he says "oh hi mark" he is actually avoiding the conflict and suppressing his feelings which rears its ugly head at the end of the film when it is revealed Lisa has been having an affair, tearing him apart.
I don't think it's as random as people make out. Mark is asking about his new client, which Johnny can't talk about, then Johnny asks about his sex life. That tells me "Let me answer a question that's none of your business by asking a question that's none of my business."
I went and watched Bad Lieutenant because of this and it was hilarious. I thought that was a dream sequence because it was all just so convenient. The fact that it actually happened - Love it!
Love your Brilliant Moment(s) and Best Shots videos! Would love you to feature Brilliant Moments from average or derided popular films. (See, even the dunce filmmaker stumbles on good technique!)
I don't know if you do requests, and even if you do the if the comment section is the wrong place to request it, but I have an idea for a video about the Top (Whatever number suits you) Genre Defying Movies. Not only would it be fascinating to see some movies so original that they can't be pinned down into an easy category, but also all the different ways that a film can shed convention down to the bone marrow. I'd be really stoked to see this and I bet a lot of others would too!
SUGGESTION: If you ever give a spoiler warning with the option to skip ahead, incorporate the time to skip to. I really enjoyed this video and just subscribed because of how well put together the editing and analylsis were. Was anticipating the time because I have seen lesser Channels make use of it. Great video
I love big, explosive moments that are both totally out of place in a narrative and somehow flawlessly integrated, like the infamous "I'LL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND!" from Barton Fink.
Another excellent video. What's even more excellent, is how the Cinefix style inspired my ZOOM elementary students to make videos about filmmaking in this type format.
Bad Lieutenant PoC NO is such a great movie, Herzeg and Cage both at their most bizarre and entertaining while exploring deep themes of guilt and sliding down a slippery slope. I'll never get tired of that movie
I think its worth exploring moments in cinema that would have no impact without the majority of the film building up to it. More than just identifying a climax, certain films contain gravitas of a scene that only land because we as viewers put in the time. Some come to mind: - The final swimming scene in GATTACA - Retrieving the car in The Darjeeling Ltd. - The silent gun showdown in Road to Perdition
Here's a fun challenge.
Brilliant moments in otherwise not-so-great films.
Even some of the worst films manage to convey something every now and again.
Exactly, like that scream in Troll 2. Cameraman brilliantly captures the fright while cropping that freaking fly out of the shot.
the room must be there!
Yosi Berman You just got one with Everest
Yosi Berman +
Add The Dark Tower.
They massacred that film ... so much potential.
"I really like that one moment in The Godfather"
"which one?"
"all of it"
"from start to finish"
That orange colored scene where the guy in the suit commits a crime of the other guy in the suit.
I know right ..... Godfather was there in the first list as well ..... the restaurant scene
Godfather is hors concours
i've been so sad for years cuz it's not #1 on imdb :((((
Catch Me if You Can is an extremely overlooked film, I'd recommend it to everybody.
96% on RT. Yup, underrated...
The Aviator is a Scorsese film starring DiCaprio with an 87% on RT and grossed $213.7 million at the box office. "Very underrated"? I think not.
ParagonKevin CineFix deserves more subs than Watchmojo? I thought 2 million is enough?
Catch Me if You Can is overrated..
"He has to _run away_ to get _chased."_
Dude. Brilliant. What a great line. What a great line. Bravo.
I like this channel very much because you guys take a movie like Everest, that was overseen by the audience, and find deeper meanings and craftmanship from the filmmakers giving us a new view!!!
Uh... did you mean overlooked?
111Renegade111 uhhhh.? what
"Room" was great and all but it will never surpass the brilliance of "The Room"
the 2003 one?
🤣🤣🤣
In Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige", there's a great moment where Christian Bale unveils his new secret magic trick, but we don't see the ending. We just see Michael Caine's and Hugh Jackman's reactions to it. It's beyond brilliant how it builds curiosity, excitement and tension. We NEED to see this trick. We have to figure out how it works. Which relates to the whole theme of the film, which is that finding out the truth will be disappointing and heartbreaking and will cost us everything.
Matt Allen the prestige is such an underrated film
+Sarah Garratt nothing from Nolan is underrated
I agree! That shot seriously gave me the chills first time I saw it! Because of the setup, the sound effects that are played over the close up on Hugh Jackman's face and then his expression, we have everything we need in order to know exactly what just went down. A lesser film maker would have just shown it and spoon fed the audience.
Also, a "5 brilliant moments from *insert various directs" would be amazing on this channel!
Best moment from that whole film, which was pretty good to start with.
Catch me if you can, Everest, and Room are criminally underrated movies
everest is, the other two are loved
Catch Me If You Can and Room are very highly rated. Underrated isn't the same as not being popular.
"overlooked"
CMIYC is overrated..
Bad Lieutenant is one of my fave movies of all time. It’s such a fun ride.
I fucking LIVE for CineFix's lists. The lists are so goddamn amazing all time, and they actually discuss the things in depth, unlike some other list channels that throw together a top 10 list in 5 minutes with 50 red arrows and circles in the thumbnail.
better than DontwatchMojo for sure
Everytime "Catch me if you can" comes on, i watch it. No matter how far in the movie, i immediately drop my phone, my pants and my newborn child to watch it.
Hope your child grows up ok
the kid probably has an irrational fear of penis for some odd reason when he grows up
OfficialEDC I hope ur child doesn't grow up to be a con artist ( don't mind , just joking 😀😀😀 )
I lost it at "my pants and my newborn child" Please take this humble single solitary thumbs up as it is all I have to give
+David B. me to haha
I really want to have a coffee chat with you about movies bro. The way you unfold these brilliant moments in movies, it's just another brilliant moment itself.

You guys should seriously do one of these every week or 2. They're so interesting and I learn so much. :D
Jake G 2187 I feel like that'd ruin it
you guys should make a "Movies you need to watch for aspiring film critics"
#1 When the TMNT remake credits rolled. Because that meant that the torture was over.
Why do you feel the need to insult a movie entirely unrelated to the video? I mean the movie was shit but this is the equivalent of that one guy trying to gain publicity for his channel on popular videos, but film video wise.
Some Random Name I was making a stupid joke, don't think about it too much.
Some Random Name you're taking this way too serious, relax
Some Random Name ?? is ur name michael bay?
Jerrie the claun Q
I want a top 10 moments of foreshadowing.
I had a feeling you’d say that
hell yeah
For me one brilliant moment is when Andy Dufresne played a record over the Shawshank Prison's speakers
Your commentary on the room was fantastic. I absolutely saw this scene and felt it
Wow great choice for number 5. Bad Lieutenant is def worth the watch.
I haven't yet seen "The Room" and were it recommended by any other channel I probably would have just watched the spoilers here, but I sincerely trust CineFix's opinion on these things, so I shall return on a later date having given it a sconce.
every film student out there must watch your videos, they're so educational
My mind feels 10 times bigger after watching this video...
KissMyAsthma i mean 0 times 10 is still zero
So in short, The Godfather is the most brilliant and best films of all time
No doubt
Catch Me If You Can is such a great movie.
agree! correctly another great movie which deserve more attention especially if you are a boxxy software user like me and have all movies ever made for free
I thank CineFix for showing me movies I haven't watched yet. Now my grandparents are baffled when they hear me talking about movies that were released before I was even born.
11:25 for anyone that doesn't want to spoil Room
DASreviews I once spoiled a shit by vomiting on it.
Looks like I need to watch Catch Me if You Can. Been putting it off
It's based on true story, pretty mindblowing!
Don't know how much of it is true though.
Have you watched it yet?
Have you?
How bout now??
When are you going to watch it?
Everest was such a great movie, with its use of CGI (nearly all mountain shots and a bunch of basecamp as well), its use of sound and music (incredibly loud and chaotic on the mountain to cut to almost complete silence the moment after), its use of negative space (showing things that AREN'T there are as important as things that ARE) and… the acting, off the roof from everyone involved.

- "Walk this way" from _Young Frankenstein_
- "He's coming to get you, Barbara" from _Night of the Living Dead_
- "You just shot an unarmed man!" from _Unforgiven_
- "You magnificent bastard! I've READ YOUR BOOK!" from _Patton_
You guys are the amazing!!!!!!!!!! Keep the amazing work up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please some do some top ten videos for:
1) music scores
2) comedy characters
3) sequels
4) franchises
5) cameos
6) musicals
7) fourth wall breaks
the best part of these videos is that it always makes me want to watch every movie on the list
Great idea. Maybe one film for each year of that decade.
Your Brilliant Moments in Film series has given me a greater appreciation for the craft. Excellent series.
Phenomenal stuff as always. Truly the best film channel on youtube. Amazing work everyone!!!
These videos are so well written. You analyse film in a way I can only admire and always learn from. Thank you.
I really like the comment section of CineFix videos. So much to learn.
Your movie lists are some of the most intelligent and educational content on this platform. PLEASE keep doing this
The waking up on the plane scene in Inception is also worth a mention.
Catch Me If You Can makes you appreciate the art of film making.
Everything is so detailed, the dialogue is brilliant, the acting is superb. One of very few films I'd give a perfect score of 10/10.
I love the way you look at movies
Damn Cinefix, I'm trying to sleep.
One of my absolute favorite scenes in the world is the one in Room where Jack starts running from the truck. Few scenes have ever transported me like this one did. It connected with the sensation you have in those dreams where you can't run, your body is too heavy and you can't breathe. It was amazing
I just found this channel but I've been binge watching for hours. This channel is miles ahead of watchmojo etc. great content and expertise.
Im so glad u guys did a piece on Room. I barely watched it last week and was blown away. Everything about that movie is just so great. Keep up the good work Cinefix.
I love this Channel. Every video you guys drop is just full of information and just high quality overall. Cheers!
I love how you just let that long moment from Room play on its own for so long. That movie is so gut-wrenching and visceral that I was immediately transported back and feeling the same sensations Jack was all over again. That kid did a fantastic job and Brie Larson deserved every inch of that Oscar.
Much love for Bad Lieutenant!!
I feel like you can make any random moments in movies look brilliant.
The work put on each video is astounding. Very different from a channel called watch mojo...
Bravo.
You should just make a 10 hour long video analysing every scene in the Godfather
The music in Catch Me if You Can is perfect!
Glad to see ‘Catch Me If You Can’ getting some recognition. It’s not perfect by any means, but it has some damn great scenes and is entertaining as hell.
As always, the cinefix movie lists are spot on.
When you said Room, had a mild panic attack and wondered which scene you could be talking about - the football throwing scene, the breast cancer scene(s) but the relief when I realised there was no 'The' - whew! Also, can you guys serious-analyse The Room, would be such fun!
Cinefix notifications are the best notifications.
These list are very important because every brilliant scene can't be put into a category or top chart ..... so keep making these videos , CINEFIX !

I just wanted to say, "you guys are good, really good at this cinema thing". Some of the rare, quality videos on youtube.
i really hope Jacob Tremblay could grow up becoming a talented actor and not disappeared into obscurity like other grown up child actors
He starred in The Book of Henry, which unfortunately failed. But he has three starring roles upcoming.
So it isn't always good enough to be a good actor you also need a good agent who can get you auditions for directors who will utilize his talents well
He was brilliant in Wonder.
Tommy Wiseau seemlessly segwaying from important clients to your sex life has to be be on here.
cinefix voice "the juxtaposition of two wildly conflicting topics showcases the inner cacophony of Johnny's mind, revealing a tormented, frightening character of unparalleled depth"
Matt Combs it may seem completely random but when he says "oh hi mark" he is actually avoiding the conflict and suppressing his feelings which rears its ugly head at the end of the film when it is revealed Lisa has been having an affair, tearing him apart.
Matt Combs seamlessly*
Thank you very much Mathew
I don't think it's as random as people make out. Mark is asking about his new client, which Johnny can't talk about, then Johnny asks about his sex life. That tells me "Let me answer a question that's none of your business by asking a question that's none of my business."
I went and watched Bad Lieutenant because of this and it was hilarious. I thought that was a dream sequence because it was all just so convenient. The fact that it actually happened - Love it!
Even a glimpse of Brooks in The Shawshank Redemption brings tears to my eyes.
That Look is one the best moments I've seen in movies 10:20
Clint's voice is so good he could be an official network voice over of HBO.
We seriously need more of this. More unranked lists that scrutinize the details!
Is it bad to say my favorite scene ever is Pippin's song in the Return of the King?
Pablo David Clavijo it was a beautiful scene
Fascinating analysis. After seeing this, and the first 5 Brilliant Moments vid, I'm a subscriber! Keep 'em coming!
Love your Brilliant Moment(s) and Best Shots videos! Would love you to feature Brilliant Moments from average or derided popular films. (See, even the dunce filmmaker stumbles on good technique!)
I have been WAITING!!!!!!
Leo Argent So like goodfellas or Scarfcae
SUGGESTION: If you ever give a spoiler warning with the option to skip ahead, incorporate the time to skip to. I really enjoyed this video and just subscribed because of how well put together the editing and analylsis were. Was anticipating the time because I have seen lesser Channels make use of it. Great video
Andrew Carden Nerd
I love big, explosive moments that are both totally out of place in a narrative and somehow flawlessly integrated, like the infamous "I'LL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND!" from Barton Fink.
These are fantastic, always worth the wait.
Another excellent video. What's even more excellent, is how the Cinefix style inspired my ZOOM elementary students to make videos about filmmaking in this type format.
The drive elevator sequence needs to make one of these lists
Damn I got chills just thinking about it. The look on Irene's face.
I need more brillian moments. No other film essay shows what a character is thinking like these do. Mooooore please.
The 'magic' of movies! Many Thanks!
I can't believe a Nick Cage movie made it onto a CineFix list
Catch me if you can is my favorite Spielberg
Chris Wright me too
Bad Lieutenant PoC NO is such a great movie, Herzeg and Cage both at their most bizarre and entertaining while exploring deep themes of guilt and sliding down a slippery slope. I'll never get tired of that movie
Man, I dont know why took 4 years to found this amazing channel
Cinefix!! Please do Top 10 Ending Scenes!!
They've done best closing shots and best end credits scenes which may not be as general as your suggestion but do show of some great endings.
That's true, but I'm thinking the scenes as a whole, like Whiplash's ending.
Emi Grant and they did best twists as well haha
Emi Grant and Whiplash was trash so meh
whiplash was trash.... sure buddy
jacks touch on the hospital bed is so much more than a touch.
I think its worth exploring moments in cinema that would have no impact without the majority of the film building up to it. More than just identifying a climax, certain films contain gravitas of a scene that only land because we as viewers put in the time. Some come to mind:
- The final swimming scene in GATTACA
- Retrieving the car in The Darjeeling Ltd.
- The silent gun showdown in Road to Perdition
Room is a sensational piece of cinema, truly.
I love these videos and y'all's analyses, ranked or no. Keep 'em coming.
I knew nothing about room before watching this. I stopped the video, I watched the movie. I wasn't mentally prepared. Brilliant movie! Thanks!
