Man, where were you 5 years ago when I had to learn how to TD (and buy a real production switcher) completely on my own 4 years ago? This is basic, but great and very accurate. Now the proud owner (well, operator & engineer) of a Ross Acuity - the big board in this video. It's amazing!

Very cool man! I'm a broadcast technician and i really enjoyed your video even if it's daily business for me. There's a real need for videos about basic broadcast concepts on RUclips.
I work in a TV station. I am an IT/Networking guy. I always wanted to know the differences between switcher and router. I was also curious with ME layer in switcher. Now I know thanks to you. I can't wait to see more videos from you.
This is awesome! The first video on live broadcast production switchers I've seen that was actually well made and not overly complicated. Even though I work with switchers everyday (I'm a TD), I think it'd be great to see one explaining the workflow of a TD, and the overall workflow of a broadcast production. For example, all of the many many things that happen when a Sports director says "ready Red, roll Red effect to Red" and the sheer amount of people those commands involves.
Hey! Thank you for your kind words! I have a video planned for production cues and personnel, which I think will fit the bill for that request! Make sure to keep an eye for it! :)
I'm an EVS engineer/operator on OBs and have always been afraid to touch the switcher (or mixer as we call it in Ireland) but after watching this I feel I understand it much better!
This is so good! Our company just bought a new Ross switcher system and we really need a video like this to learn more good things! Looking forward for more!
Yours, are some of the best, most straight=forward videos that banish the gobbely speak, and present for pros and novices alike! Excellent presentation skills my friend. I've recommended to ALL of my students and interns.
This is exactly what I have been looking for! I'm trying to work out how to use the ATEM mini and so many videos just jump in without actually explaining the basics of video production. Thank you thank you!
Great video. As a 35 year seasoned broadcast engineer myself, this demonstrates my skepticism about doing live production in the cloud. You are going to feed all your broadcast grade cameras into a virtual switcher in the cloud? How much bandwidth will that take? How do you control this virtual switcher in real time? A mouse?
GREAT video.... you put in loads of work! You only hinted at the question I had, but at least I have a start now... I am trying to find out how ME2 and ME3 are commonly used.... I can't really think of ways that they make sense. I have an ATEM 4 M/E and feel I am not using it to its full potential.
Spare MEs can be used for what ever you want really. I’ve mainly used them to prebuilt effects for later recall during a programme. For example when I worked at Sky News in the UK it was set up like this: ME1 - fed the video wall and had various effects saved to allow to feed video boxes and graphics in the wall depending on what programme was being broadcast. ME2 - mainly used for 2 and 3 way boxes when interviewing non studio (“down the line”) guests. ME3 - again used for boxes etc and also the where our in to break sequences ran - usually comprised of a video box and graphics to tease what’s coming up after the break - something that may use different video and graphics feed each time. We also had hundreds of prebuilt effects saved to allow the TD, or Vision Mixer as they’re correctly called in the UK, to instantly be able to have anything need for the particular programme. We’d also use MEs 2 and 3 to build things during a programme that weren’t predefined or new because of breaking news - eg sticking a reporter in a box over a map. That’s a basic overview but any other questions feel free to ask!
Got a last minute V1 gig for a huge Neurocritical conference next week and this video definitely helped me tremendously, not too different than what I do at my church but the title Video Director/Switcher had me concerned. 😆 Normally cam op/A2/breakout op but we’ll see.. jus hope building a rack isn’t involved 😩 Thanks again! You got my sun! 🔔
great video buddy, well explained. I'm new to broadcast and I want to learn as much as I can. Thankfully I found your channel and I easily get your explanation. Thank you for this great video. Please do more buddy. God bless
Great Video Man! I Just Have A Question: I Have Always Wondered If A Production Switcher Is Used Only For Switching Between Cameras, How TV Stations Manage To Play Video Files Through The Production Switcher? Keep It Up!
Greetings! Production switchers can be use to switch between any compatible video source connected to it. This could be cameras, video servers, computers, etc. There are however some switchers that (in addition) have built in media players (as internal sources) that can be selected on the bus and played out. Depending on the switcher, depends on how this function works and what type of video files it supports - and even if it can pass audio as well. :)
Great breakdown. I'd love to see something that dives deeper. I'm used to the Christie Spyder / Barco Event Master style of switching (multi-output scaler-switcher) so the more technical aspects of braodcast style (ME) switchers are sometimes hard to translate in my head.
Please make a video on how to use a tri-level sync signal between a new ross switcher, and an old one . . Here is the possible issue I face : We have a carbonite ultra 60 switcher, and an older ross carbonite switcher. The cameras connected to the carbonite 60 are in sync with switcher without the reference signal fed to the ccu units of the respective cameras,,and the switcher gets the external reference signal from a SPG by leader company. but when the HD-sdi out puts of the same cameras are accessed through the older switcher we experience reference issue with black stripes appearing in the camera sources, and the older switcher gets the same black out -PAL-M from spg. All the cameras output hd sdi signal .,and the spg sends out black out PAL M . IS IT MANDATORY FOR THE HD SIGNAL TO ONLY USE TRI LEVELSYNC !!? hd sdi can use black burst as a reference signal as well ,
Hello i just want ask because I have a problem to our studio, my camera 4 source output have no video out obly black screen and our ccu have an alarm,, can you help me fir the setting of ikegami HSS- 200 switcher . I thought may the optic fiber i already clean na fiber but still the same thank you
You'll need some kind of hardware or software based encoder to stream with your hardware switcher. Depending on the output of your switcher will dictate what encoder you can use, SDI, hdmi, NDI, etc :)
Point of order: almost nobody calls it the "background" bus, even when they're setting up an upstream key on it -- it's the Program bus. Cause if it's not, then Preset is generally not "preset" either -- on upstream M/E's, it's traditionally *not* been a flip-flop mix. Though perhaps Carbonite does it that way... ;-)
I'm about to start an MCO gig at a local station for live news. My previous jobs were your basic automated playout-type gigs with barely any live switching going on, but live is going to be a whole other monster. This video is super helpful! Thanks dude!

Ryan, is there anything like a yolobox (other than a PC) that can record all sources for switching (editing) at a later time. Everything made now seems to have emphasis on live stream. I want the easiest remix (later) edit. Thanks
Can you throw out a couple brands and models that I might look at to use. I need about 4 hdmi 4 sdi minimum. Maybe even ndi ready. This will be for live bands playing.
A good one to look at in that scale would be a Ross Carbonite Solo. Has the mix of SDI and HDMI. No native NDI, but they make some throw down conversion boxes.

One common thing to use upstream MEs for is setting up a 2-box or even 3-box, for later use in the program at one button-punch.

If I have a hardware switcher, do I still need a software encoder?

It's actually a Carbonite Multi Media (discontinued) with the classic Carbonite panel (also discontinued). The Black would be the closest thing to it.
