  • I'm back on this bike again as I open the carb, pull the idle jet and bore it out bigger to help with the off idle throttle response. I posted another video on this same bike about one year ago. In this episode I finally get it running properly.

    Idle mixture isnt the problem. Mid range is. You need to raise the slide needles. The honda 450 hawk/nighthawks had this problem. If there are not notches in the needle to move clip, put a tiny washer under the clip to raise the needle.

    This had the same set up as my 1989 virago xv250 and I had the same issue with it taking forever to warm up. It became a big problem when it wouldn't ever warm up and I couldn't ride it without the bike dying when I gave it throttle. This is my first bike and I had no clue what I was doing. This video helped me get to the jet and see that the hole was blocked. Blew in it to see the pin hole and it was fixed! Thank you so much!

      Yes I agree about the excellent close-up camera work. So clear to see.

    Thank you for your great video. My car was repaired by watching your video (watched it many times 😀) I had to go to the store to fix it, but they didn't have time to repair it until August, so I did it myself. The first time it was repaired. It's fixed (I am a person with poor English, and I use translation software for all messages given to you) Thank you

    just bought a brand new vstar and having issues with it dying when giving it throttle from idle. This video is gonna help me take a look and see if the jets are clogged.
    Thanks!

    Okay, I was about to comment that you should just buy a #20 pilot jet (one size up from stock), but as I watched and saw you used this specialized needle to ream out the hole (never heard of a beading needle before!).... well? this is a real DIY!!! Very nice camera work too!

    My bike has the SAME problem! Last saturday I cleaned the carb and all the stuff, and still the same. I will be doing "this" mod on the idle jet, that's for sure.

    I guess the previous owner took good care of this bike. I just got a Vstar 4 days ago and its running normal. Good to know in case I experience problems. I was concerned getting a carburetor since they seem to required more maintenance. So far so good! Thanks for the video...

    Kind sir, I want to thank you. This movie let me realise that cleaning the jet isn't that hard (I had to reach them but did not want to remove the carb). Today I tackled the problem and cleaned out my jets, my idle one was clogged and my main was 50% clogged. cleaned them both and the power was back. I also managed to fix the idle issue on mine and I am so happy! THANKS!

      Just curious...What was your idle problem, and how did you fix it? Thanks.

    • @l33tgam3r
      @l33tgam3r 4 года назад

      Sure Jason!
      Issue: bike did not idle at all
      What caused the problem? Idle screw bad adjustment
      solution? Tuned the idle screw.
      So normally those viragos have that large screw with a philipse head (but can also be adjusted by hand) if you have no idle, turn them clockwise, this will put pressure on the mechanism and will increase idle speed.

      @@l33tgam3r Thank you for the information.

    • @l33tgam3r
      @l33tgam3r 4 года назад

      Jason, the idle screw is located on your gas valve (where your gas cable is installed on the carb to open or close) By adjusting it, i just turned it clockwise, this will put the gas valve more open. I did not mess around with the jets.

    You should have checked to see if the accelerator pump is working and if it is if it's adjusted properly to inject gas when you first crack the throttle!

  • @pcofranc

    Another method is to drill the copper plug that looks like a copper BB on the outside of the carb so the passage from the pilot screw to the pilot jet can be directly accessed for cleaning. Google "Carburetor Cleaning Part III".

    I have a virago too, the fuel tap should be turned on the correct position before starting the engine...... the one you running it on is just for filling purposes. That is by gravity. Has the inlet box been modified(the rubber tube cut off?)

    Also, the damage caused to the jet's slot, by the screw-driver, also affects jet performance. This is true with automotive jets. I have rebuilt dozens of Holleys over the last 45 years. In fact, Holley states this in its publications. I have to assume the same is true no matter who made the carb.

  • @DeanSegovis

    Yes it does have an accelerator pump.

  • @yerguy

    Dean,
    Just wondering?? Does this carb have an accelerator pump circuit?? If not, it should. I hate carb without them, big flat spot off idle transitioning to the main.
    I know what you mean about carb jet drills. I once had the Weber master drill kit that a borrowee never returned. That's why I do NOT loan tools or manuals anymore.

    check enricher circuit on the side of carbourator , it squirts a bit of fuel in to the intake when you give it throttle to catch up revs, it mibht be clogged from fuel oxidation and gum...

    That screw is the pilot air screw, the more you screw it out the more it will lean the fuel/air mix. So if you want it richer for when the engines cold you need to screw it in reducing the amount of air

    • @sheridancowling6257
      @sheridancowling6257 5 лет назад +3

      If you are talking about the screw behind the fuel pump on the right hand side of the bike then you are incorrect.
      With the screw wound in it is leaner than it is when it's wound out.
      In the video he has it wound out and he is running it really rich.
      The base position for the screw is 1 3/4 - 2 turns out.
      From there you can tune it with a couple methods with the popular choice being the lean drop method where you tighten the screw to lean it out until the idle drops and you then go back 1/4 turn.
      You then fine tune on the road.

  • @sheridancowling6257
    @sheridancowling6257 5 лет назад +2

    Your bike has bigger issues if you had to go through that process.
    For starters you are running it really rich with the screw wound most of the way out considering the base position is 1 3/4 - 2 turns out.

    Jetsrus.com has replacement jets for this bike. Look under Jets, Jet Kits, Street, Yamaha, 250 V Star 250. They list the standard 17.5 slow jet and a 20 slow jet, which should be a good replacement. The price is about $7. I'd show the link if RUclips allowed it.

    hi,... just watched your video, thanks for doing that!...
    my 2000 virago 250 mixture adjust screw was adjusted all the way in (lean)...
    with no change in idle or running status, any ideas why this is
    happening? thanks,... the bike seems to be running fine,... just
    smells like its really running rich...

    Pilot screw all the way out means either it's plugged or you need a bigger main jet
