  • Complete how to for rejetting the carb on any XV250 model. For my bike with K&N air filter and drag pipes I found a 120 main and 20 idle jet worked best.
    I don't recommend you buy the 6 sigma jet kit. Far too expensive for what is included. Here is what I would buy instead:

    Have to say Thank You!! I pulled my bike out this spring and it's not running well. It has always had a terrible cold idle, wanting to stumble for the first mile or two of riding. Always wanted to tear carb apart and check or change jetting. This video helps me out tremendously!! I never knew what jets sizes to even look for!! Thanks a Million!!

    • @helloish12321

      You can set it side by side with your stock needle and figure out where the clip would need to be for them to have about the same effective length. Then move the clip one notch closer to the point of the needle.
      That will make the needle sit higher in the body of the carb and allow more gas to flow through the main jet sooner.

    • @helloish12321

      The jets are the brass parts that gas flows through to mix with air and go into the engine. There are typically 2; a main jet and idle jet. The larger the hole in the jet the more gas goes in. The jets with bigger numbers have larger holes.
      You can use this guide to help take out your factory jets to clean them but if your bike is stock (no intake or exhaust work done) then you don't need to change the sizes. If you do intake or exhaust work then you get more air in and need to adjust the jets accordingly.

    Excuse my ignorance. But what is the goal or hope for installing this kit? For someone with a functioning carburetor that has no noticeable problems, is this not needed or is it recommended for performance increase.

    • @helloish12321
      @helloish12321  11 месяцев назад

      Only recommended if you have done exhaust or intake changes. It adjusts your fuel mixture for the additional airflow. If you don't do this after a new exhaust or intake then you will have a lean mix and it causes higher temps which is a no no on these air cooled motors.
      Info in this video can help with basic carb cleaning as well since I show how to access the jets and slide.

Having just switched the pipes without rejetting really upset the running condition of the motor and probably more than it does on other bikes. Yes it will start and run, but the control of the throttle won't be smooth and it will backfire a lot.
      It's worth noting that this bike is also sold as a 125cc with the same mikuni carb. It might have something to do with the carb being slightly undersized for a 250 already.

      Make sure the petcock is set in regular or reserve. The handle should be pointing up or down. If it's pointed sideways it's the "prime" setting which just allows gas to come out with gravity. If it's set on regular or reserve and gas is still flowing out then you may have a faulty petcock. Either rebuild the seals inside or you could drain the tank or put a bolt in the pipe to plug it while you do the work

    is that "slide" a choke valve??

    • @helloish12321
      @helloish12321  Год назад +3

      No. The slide in a cv style carburetor like ours is what actually controls the airflow to the engine, not the throttle valve. When you open the throttle plate you actually cause a pressure change in the carburator that then moves the slide up by pulling a negative pressure on that rubber diaphragm. Our bike also doesn't use a butterfly valve choke, the choke plunger controls some other pressure system that I don't entirely understand, but the end effect is more vacuum to suck more fuel through the jets.
      The alternative is a slide style carb where your wrist directly controls the slide and there is no throttle butterfly valve at all. Pull the throttle and the slide goes up. These typically have a butterfly valve style choke. You see these on dirt bikes for instant throttle control.
      Many street bikes use cv carbs because they are somewhat altitude adjusting. They figure street bike riders are less likely to want to constantly adjust tuning. They also add a slight smoothing effect to the throttle making the ride less choppy.

    • @HighAway
      @HighAway Год назад

      @@helloish12321 Ok, that made the most sense. much appreciated. thanks. I know for the fact that it has a throttle plate valve as oppose to this slide. Even tho, that thing does act like a choke which is why I assumed that what it is the function for it to run rich and lean. Didn't realize its a slide as a slider whatever it is but slides. Wonder why they use that than the plate. Anyways, when i had it wide open, the idle is so high... so I move it to nearly middle to the point it idle lower before it stalls out. tho the bottom line is it acts like a choke! haha

    What is the gas mileage with the jet kit and different exhaust system? How many miles are on your motorcycle?
    I like small motorcycles and want one that will last forever, even if it is kept stock. Yamaha has a good reputation for reliability. Do you think one of these would make a great motorcycle for a couple of decades of riding for perhaps 100,000 miles?

    • @helloish12321
      @helloish12321  3 месяца назад +2

      From what I understand smaller motorcycles don't last as long as large ones. Overstressed engines and all that. Also this being air cooled doesn't help.
      I have almost 10k on mine with no severe issues. Only the usual 15 yo outside kept motorcycle things. I consider it very reliable so far and its an old simple design. Not a lot to go wrong.
      Completely stock I got routinely 72 mpg. After the pipes and rejet it went down quite a bit to low 50s. I was running a Chinese aftermarket carb and swapped back to the OEM mikuni and once I got that completely dialed in I get high 50s.
      It's a large mpg drop but the bike feels much faster afterwards.
