Having started the Golf 2 up after the cylinder head rebuild and gasket change, i found that the front crank shaft oil seal gasket had blown and was leaking oil. to fix this i need to remove the cam belt again. i used the rope trick to lock the engine as this is an automatic and cant be locked using the gearbox as you would with a manual transmission. it worked ( sort of )

That rope tick is very handy. I used the same trick before when replacing a broken valve spring in the past.
What socket type did you use on the crankshaft, will a normal 19mm 12 Points socket work or did you use a special spline or triple square socket?
    Thanks

If I remember correctly, it was a standard 12 point socket. It fitted perfectly. The roap trick is a far better way than the book method.
