We were living in Ft Collins the year that Lawn Lake dam let go and make Estes Park a mud hole. Drove up a week later and the town was still shoveling mud out of the stores. A few years later (now living back in NJ) we were at RMNP and heard a ranger talk about the dam failure. Decided to hike up there the next year. My ex and I did the hike to LL and back and got some beautiful pictures. Did Mills Lake the following year and loved that. Most people visit the easier areas and don`t get to enjoy the tranquility of the park once you are distanced from the tourists. Last time my new wife and I went there was 2013 and it rained for the whole 5 days we were in Estes Park. Have to go back again, maybe this fall.
My Dad and I did Lawn Lake about 16 years ago. I wish you had shown the culvert and where the dam broke. It's a great trail and I loved it. Thanks for showing it to me again.
Looks like a nice day to do it! I hear the Crystal Lakes are really beautiful. I am gonna go for a big hike in that area sometime this year. I really want to get on Hagues and Mummy again.
@@nicksangetta8874 Made it to the crystal lakes but ran out of time to hit the saddle - next time. I want to do those to, I'll have to re-watch your mummy mania video before I go :)
I didnt see the dam, but I didnt know to look for it either. I just kinda know what happened that it gave way and flooded. Its crazy how much earth it tore away.
@@nicksangetta8874 I hiked up to Lawn Lake back in the late 80's and the remains of the dam were still there. I remember getting some video of what was left of it. I'm sure all traces of it are long gone.

@@Davespates Nice! I am jealous! I bet the lakes were awesome. They are out there though! Going for Lone Pine and Verna tomorrow for my moms birthday.
Thanks for the video! It's my preview for my hike this Saturday to the saddle.
Looks like a really great hike, especially if you want to avoid the crowds! Well done!
Always wanted to take this hike, now I have. Thanks again to you and your mom. That was truly a happy hike!
Awesome hike. Great footage of a beautiful area.
Beautiful trail... I'd never even heard of it!
Did you see any of the remains of the earthen dam that gave way resulting in the Alluvial Fan? Great hike, fun to see where the trail goes.

there is a huge gully still there where the flood came down. It's a very impressive scar on the land 40 years later.
We are coming to Estes Park in September. Can you recommend 4-5 hikes we should take. We like to go 6-9 miles. Love trees, falls and lakes.
Emerald Lake, Haiyaha Lake, Alberta Falls (shorter), The Lock. Enjoy!!!
Are you able to get in before the reservation system? Or are you using system?
that is what i would like to know too :)
timed entry restrictions (other than Bear Lake) start at 9AM this year, so not hard at all to get in before
Yeah, only the Bear Lake corridor has reservations starting at 5am. The rest of the park is 9am so its easy.
