I don’t know why, but Hollow Knigjts OST gives me the best vibes. All of these are great, especially Twilight Princess, but Hollow Knights is definitely my favorite.
its that _atmosphere_ man. chistoyey is very good at really molding the music into the ambience. and listening to silksong samples, he’s REALLY good at that. bonebottom climax gives me chills lol
Hk and Undertsle are my top 2. But here’s why Undertale takes it for me. Every ost or song in the game is worthy to be in my music playlist. It has such a diverse selection, it’s so unique, and, I don’t think you streamed RANKING all of ori’s osts. That just proves how iconic every single track is in undertale, the fact that you can easily rank them. It is a staple of video game music and revolutionized them forever. Undertale is such a magical game, and I hope it lives for decades on.
Death’s Door is game that you should definitely check out if you’re interested in good soundtracks. It feels like the gameplay and the music are linked, like in one of the sections the tempo of the music lines up with the up and down movement of the pistons, and certain characters get songs that punctuate their arrival. It also features motifs like you were talking about, and is just overall a spectacular soundtrack.
Ori, Undertale, and Hollow Knight all make it into my top 10, as well. Legendary osts all around. Two that I really recommend are Cuphead and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, especially since both games' DLC have come out. You talked about loving live orchestration? Well, there you go. I cannot sit still listening to them. Great list, over all.
Hollow Knight, Undertale, and Omori are my favorites. Hornet, Sealed Vessel, and Mantis Lords are the best songs from Hollow Knight. Asgore is my favorite Undertale track and World’s End Valentine and Omori are incredible tracks from Omori. I have to mention Vanguard sound since they have great tracks and Find the Flame from FF16 is probably my favorite individual game track.
Some of my personal favorites are Celeste due to its ability to tell a story through motifs and music, ultrakill because those songs go crazy hard, and Elden ring, mainly just because fighting radagon while the main menu theme played made me feel like I took a real journey myself
Great list! Skyward Sword will have my favorite soundtrack forever and always. My other favorite OSTs are those of the other Zelda games obviously, 13 sentinels, the Ori games, Hollow Knight, Animal Crossing new leaf, and the Danganronpa games!
Solid. Some of these I would have to rank as entire franchises because selecting one would omit so much other good stuff. Franchises for me would include Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, Mega Man/X, Metroid & Ori. Games that are connected? Sea of Stars/Messenger & the Ico games. Single titles? I’m going with Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight & Chrono Trigger.
The subnautica soundtrack is a so good at imersing you in the alien world you have crashed on and really creates an air of mystery that fits the game perfectly. Hollow knight is still my favourite tho
Would recommend Bravely default, octopath traveler (1 and 2), Nier replicant/automata, Kingdom hearts in general (specially any bosses theme), The world ends with you, xenoblade 2, bayonetta (1 and 2), a short hike (the vinyl is awesome) and the mario and luigi rpg series. Also kinda any final fantasy games have an amazing soundtrack. And again, specially Bravely Default that remains my GOAT. Also pokemon games do have good music, the town with their atmospherics themes and Nice battle themes. Edit: forgot persona in general is also very good
Undertale and Deltarune have amazing soundtracks Terraria and Minecraft both have astounding soundtracks, especially Terraria Calamity Pizza Tower ALSO has a lot of astonishing soundtracks
Great list! Ori and the wotw is probably my favorite also, but it doesn't contain my favorite single song. That award goes to Divine Dragon from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Even if you don't play the game, you have to at least give that one song a listen. It is absolutely legendary.
Ori and the Will of the wisps is a very good soundtrack. All the dark souls soundtracks are incredibly underrated and recommend ones like, yhorm the giant, flame lurker and the first hunter
At the start my heart dropped to my stomach when he put blind forest in 10 and I was gonna rant on the discord, but then he put will of the wisps in first and I forgave him
I think you can put a lot of OST music into 2 categories: What the player is experiencing And what the world around them is experiencing. Most if not all of Undertale’s boss themes are representing the boss’s feelings like how battle against a true hero represents the determination of Undyne. Celeste however often likes to mimic how you or Madeline feels with tracks like reach for the summit enfisising the motivation in that chapter.
I think my favorite soundtracks are minecraft and undertale. Those are just masterpiece, for a whole different reason. Minecraft's is so incredibly nostalgic and beautiful, and not only the C418 ones (even if they are really special) also the new ones from other composers, my favorites being infinite amethyst and otherside. Alpha is also incredible to listen while reading the end poem after finishing the game. And for undertale soundtrack, everything is said. Some are so funny, like the dog and temmy ones. But the bests are clearly megalovania and battle of the true hero. You're calmly doing the genocide route, easily killing every monsters and bosses on your way, and then THOSE begin to play, and you're like WTF, and then you get KICKED IN THE ASS BY A TRUCK GOING AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT.
You should hear GTA vice city soundtrack on the radio they are the best with the 1980s vibe in a vice city evening especially flash fm and emotion 98.3
@Wyvrn you liked my comment! Thanks man. One thing in paticular that I love about the soundtrack of wotw is that it shows Ori’s emotions. Gareth Coker said that he purposefully made the soudtracks for the escape sequences less panicky and more heroic to reflect Ori’s state of mind. Ori has escaped tight situations before and therefore isn’t that scared but more focussed instead. The boss fights sound a lot more agressive and loud, because Ori is new to fighting and kind of scared. However, the second half of the major boss fights sounds more hopefull and courageous, kind of like Ori thinking “I’m gaining the upper hand!”. The one exeption of this is kwolok, because Ori doesn’t want to fight a friend. It’s truly amazing how well this ost is put together.

Geometry Dash objectively has the best OST: - You can replace song files to add them to levels. Therefore, Geometry Dash's OST is every song in existence with as much emotion and storytelling expertise as the level creator can manage
In my personal opinion. Hollow Knight is easily my number 1. Here’s why: First of all. Hollow Knight IS my favorite game hands down. Second of all. Some of the tracks like Sealed Vessel for example were so good in my opinion that they literally changed my entire view on not just video game music but music all together. Third of all. Like you said each piece of music fits with each area that it’s in SO well. I know Team Cherry said this game was “rushed” BUT I feel like even though it was rushed. Team Cherry perfected this game.
I know you don’t like playing mods much but terraria’s calamity mod has the best soundtrack ever. Its atmospheric tracks and boss themes are great and it uses a lot of motifs, each boss theme perfectly fits the boss. One of the couple of them with lyrics, Roar of the Jungle Dragon also keeps a rhyme scheme and the lyrics match with the lore of the game. DM Dokuro is my favorite composer now and it’s a shame he is no longer working with the mod. This ost makes up 1/6 of my playlist lol
Alright, video game music is amazing and perfect, but is it something you would listet to while doing day to day things? Or do you listen "normal" music? Also I wasn't expecting ducktales 🤣. (Also, Worldless is a super good game that has came out recently. The ost in that game js really good too, flowing along with the environment that you are playing in. I definitely recommend it. When I go on my daily run, i don’t have gaming music playing, but if I am doing homework, playing games, or practicallt doing anything else, I have a playlist on like 75 gaming songs I love. Gaming songs are so magical because there’s usually no lyrics to distract you from the magic of the song itself.

2 more honorable mentions are Halo and Destiny. Many of their songs are similar in the fact that they have much more of an impact when hearing them in game. Especially songs like Journey and Deep Stone Lullaby
Do you not feel anything when you listen to White Palace, pale Court, or nightmare king Grimm while playing and you know the lore. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just wondering because I love hollow knight a bit more than Ori.

You're definitely correct to point out how iconic Undertale's soundtrack is, but like I said in the video, I prefer orchestras.
The sealed vessel is a BANGER out of all the songs in Hollow Knight it is my favourite.
Sealed Vessel is incredible how it builds tension to sadness and finishes with slowly building tension. it is a special track and one of my favorites.
