Just bought this based on the video. Should be noted that there is definitely a slight input latency in faster paced games such as FPS/fighting games. If you're even a slightly above casual player who cares about not being handicapped by performance, I wouldn't recommend this solution. Going to return this ASAP.
One thing to keep in mind as that I’d recommend this for casual games and not competitive. There are degrees of input latency especially if you plan to capture and stream at the same time. There’s also the genki shadowcast for 50$ which is ultra convenient but again, meant for casual games
@@NonZeroPossibility08 I would say that just making sure you don’t use your monitor as a screen would be best. So playing on a regular tv that’s hooked up to a capture card to a computer would be the best way to go. There’s just nothing out there that’s 100% true lagless input as far as I know
I was in the same position as you (wanting a do-it-all device). I realized that getting a gaming laptop is the most cost effective and simple way to do it.
I've tried several different capture devices, but all has 'tiny' lag which can't seemed to avoid. The lag won't notice for casual gaming, but longer you play into the game, you'll definitely feel lag. So my solution is getting a 27" monitor (should get a 32"), used as extended screen for iMac and for console gaming.
Interesting, there's always going to be an unavoidable lag converting the signal from source to a capture card and then to the final display device. Definitely a worthy attempt at resolving this issue though. Yesterday, I picked up an LG 27" 4k 400 nits, usbc hub with power delivery display for $260 open box, 27UP80B-W. These usbc screens have had their prices slashed in recent months, making the Apple Displays even more of a difficult purchase.
Thanks alot for doing this, partially in response to a post I made.😻 That's the best game play I ever seen on the M1 machines, even the xbox one x has 6 teraflops vs m1 2.7 teraflops. No streaming lag like gamepass, strada, etc, or subscription needed, if you already have the games, it could actually pay for itself. And with game pass you can download the games and play them all lag free, I think or even use the ethernet port for faster downloading and gaming. I see they have a 4K 60 version too, which gives your newer consoles, ps5, xbox series x uhd movie disks and games playback, which will look great on the 4.5K and 5K iMac screens, so now your iMac can play the highest quality commercial movies releases, or red box rentals, cheaper than apple store rentals.. without any streaming issues or costs. Should be great with the 27" iMac too. Hopefully manufacturers will see this and add hdmi in, on their all in ones and laptops, especially the 4K and OLED< and miniled ones.. Copy protection ruins it from being perfect. I will try this with my 27" imac, and mac mini for fun. Ouch! ..It's not Cheap!🤫😳

Ok, so based on this video, I just bought an Elgato HD60s... My PS4 Pro is now displayed on my Mac screen (Apple Cinema Display)... Unfortunately, there is a slight lag/input latency that makes games not enjoyable. I am currently playing Red Dead Redemption Online: kind of ok but not really... and Days Gone: not ok... This games feels less smooth, heavy... I tried on two different MacBook Pros : Intel 2015 and I9 2019 , same result. ... my purchase was second-hand, and I will sell it again. So, the solution is: just get another screen.
For those who selected the iMac already, this is a decent hack. If you’re debating between an iMac and a Mac mini + TV or Mac mini + monitor with HDMI and audio out,, this is a reason to get the Mac mini. In my case, I bought a monitor with analog audio out and the quality of the jack turned out to be so horrible I had to plug my speakers directly into my computers. Having more than one computer for simultaneous use, that meant an expensive audio interface reliant on the Mac mini being awake to get audio from any device on the display. I’m satisfied for now, but recommend against others going this path. No HDCP errors though!
If I don't want to actually screen capture or stream, could I just plug in a regular HDMI Mac adapter into my xbox? Or do I need this fancy $200 device?

I hope it works or I'm returning to Apple lol.. they should allow for display input in 2021 cmon now.. And remote play is terribly laggy now that's impossible.. thank you for this

Good Video Man! I did a similar video on this a little over a year ago, but instead of using their HD60+ I just used their Game Capture HD software to use the iMac as a Gaming Monitor for iPhone and iPad. 👍💪
I didn't detect lag in my testing but for a hardcore gamer I would imagine that it does exists. As far as casual gaming and optimizing desk space its a fun option.

@@briandottv9444Any idea of how much latency? Is it >100ms? I have an iMac 27" and just bought an XBOX series X. The iMac has an awesome 5K display and I'm planning to make my setup with this dongle solution. I would expect perhaps a couple of frames of latency or less than 50ms as the route will have some frame buffering but when you get more than that I will detect it.

This is so interesting. Im wondering if this could work to capture video from an external PC if you connect it via HDMI? My point is that I would like to use an M1 iMac as an external monitor for a PC but so far there doesnt seem to be any way to do this. Is this something you might be able to do a test on?
Hey, I was wondering the same, as I plan to use my iMac screen for my work PC. I came across this option of Remote Desktop App by Microsoft ruclips.net/video/rZPj2febthw/видео.html . Rather than just using iMac as a screen, it should allow you to access your PC remotely from your Mac, basically achieving the same thing. I haven't tried it yet as I am still waiting for my PC to arrive. That said, I am not a gamer so not sure if this is good enough for gamers. But may be worth a shot.
Question, you said you could get 1080p at 60 fps.. could you reduce 1080p to maybe 720, and get a higher frame rate? Thanks for the vid, super helpful!
Hello, I have a question: it this adapter function for the PS 5? Thank you, if you answer my question, and sorry for this English, i cant speak god Enlish, because i had only 3 years English in the scool. I hope, you can understad ist :)
Sports, racing, fps games will stutter no matter what using this method. Don’t rely on this if those are the games you play. If you like puzzle or sim games you will be fine. But once’s things move quickly on screen you will stutter everytime as this is considered a display “preview” so it’s not operating at the same capacity as actually displaying what is coming through the capture card.
Ok, for those who have tried this solution: What's laggier, streaming HDMI 60hz 1080p output with these kind of devices or streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming? Are the semi-cheap ones capable to stream at 4K? I could maybe stand a tiny bit of lag for certain games, but Xbox Cloud Gaming was always unplayable for me. I do have a PC tower and a Xbox One, I would love to use this solution with the compromise of a tiny bit of tolerable lag.
there is "4K60 S+" from elgato also that supports 4k@60 and HDR, but not sure how good is it. From the reviews on their website, it seems like a crap, but I don't know.
so this is pretty much just a capture card right? can i use any capture card to translate the xbox onto my iMac for gaming? only gaming and not recording
mate i heard you can use this to passthrough (thats what they call it, basically not record just using as a monitor) at 4k60, is that the same thing to download on imac? (from ur video i saw the software only allowed 1080p60, didnt see an option for 4k60)
@@JerrySchulze oops sorry if it was confusing but i was talking about the feature for the elgato product (read it on the elgato product page that 1080p recording, 4k60 passthrough) was asking if it was the same download, as the 4k60 passthrough could not record and the download seemed to be for 1080p recording(i assume that because the options only allowed up to 1080p in the video) its fine if you dont know either, i know ur not the creator of this product, was just thinking that u might know more than me about this
Would I use the same settings for a SNES or GameCube as you used at the beginning… the SNES obviously doesn’t have the same graphics requirements as an Xbox. Thanks in advance.
Thanks Jerry for this very useful tip. Have you had a chance to test whether this method also works on the Studio Display? Pretty sure it works if using a Mac to plug the capture card, but what about connecting the capture card to the Studio Display directly, using the Thunderbolt port?
How are you guys experiencing no input lag? I bought the latest elgato and connected to my M2 pro macbook to play PS5 on my XDR display but there's definitely input lag and quite big. It's such a big difference from directly connecting my PS5 to an LG screen for instance.. (???)

And the interface tells me I need a USB 3.0 connection do you think I need to get the USB-c to thunderbolt wire as I have late 2013
which one do you recommend to use the imac 24 "as a display for ps4 / xbox and have little lag? the 60s or the 60s +? or is there any better video capture card to play the ps4 or xbox on the imac display? thank you

When you try to play Fortnite with this thing, is it going to will it keep the latest version of Fortnite or will it delay it so its v13.40 like when you try to download Fortnite through the Epic Games Launcher. Respond as fast as you can please before I buy the Xbox knowing I won't be able to play the latest version?
My question is, I have a little Lention USB-C hub. I do not wanna buy this elgato thing. Will the xbox work if i use the usb-c hub instead of the device (elgato thinng)?
Is it technically difficult or added cost for Apple to include a HDMI port on iMacs to display gaming consoles like a PS5, why would they make the decision to not do this?
Great video. I’ve tried/tested this out on a Thunderbolt Display on my own (before watching your video). The results were lots of input lag, but that could be for many reasons. 1. I was using OBS, not Stream Link, and 2. I was connected to a M1 Macbook Pro. Might try this again with stream link
What about connecting the older XBox 360 which has component connections ( a split 3 cables for red, white, and yellow and another 3 split for red, blue, green) to an iMac?
Would I be able to use any hdmi-usb c adapter (not specifically the Elgato because i don’t plan to record or stream anything) to connect a PC to my 2021 iMac and use it as an external monitor? I’m looking into purchasing a gaming PC and am wondering if this is possible!

so this is pretty much just a capture card right? can i use any capture card to translate the xbox onto my iMac for gaming? only gaming and not recording
Hello, I bought this device this year. but there is one problem - you can no longer download this program for Mac from the elgato website. what to do?
mate i heard you can use this to passthrough (thats what they call it, basically not record just using as a monitor) at 4k60, is that the same thing to download on imac? (from ur video i saw the software only allowed 1080p60, didnt see an option for 4k60)
Target Display mode has been gone for some time. I am not aware of a way from Apple.
@@JerrySchulze oops sorry if it was confusing but i was talking about the feature for the elgato product (read it on the elgato product page that 1080p recording, 4k60 passthrough)
was asking if it was the same download, as the 4k60 passthrough could not record and the download seemed to be for 1080p recording(i assume that because the options only allowed up to 1080p in the video)
its fine if you dont know either, i know ur not the creator of this product, was just thinking that u might know more than me about this
Would I use the same settings for a SNES or GameCube as you used at the beginning… the SNES obviously doesn’t have the same graphics requirements as an Xbox.
Thanks in advance.
I imagine you need to use an HDMI converter first and that those systems dont have HDCP so should work.
Hi, does it also work if using USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter from Apple? And is it a must to download the app?
Thanks Jerry for this very useful tip. Have you had a chance to test whether this method also works on the Studio Display? Pretty sure it works if using a Mac to plug the capture card, but what about connecting the capture card to the Studio Display directly, using the Thunderbolt port?
Yes it works but need to connect to max because need software to run it.
How are you guys experiencing no input lag? I bought the latest elgato and connected to my M2 pro macbook to play PS5 on my XDR display but there's definitely input lag and quite big. It's such a big difference from directly connecting my PS5 to an LG screen for instance.. (???)
Yo Jerry ; just got the setup updated my iOS and my PS4 has a touchy connection but it does have a sweet spot. ... I’m having difficulty connecting to my iMac , does the elgato lights stay on when I’m normal operation red/ white lights? And the interface tells me I need a USB 3.0 connection do you think I need to get the USB-c to thunderbolt wire as I have late 2013
@JerrySchulze woah, nice! very interesting idea! will that work to connect my PC laptop to the M1 iMac, and use this as an external monitor? :)
I think it should work.
which one do you recommend to use the imac 24 "as a display for ps4 / xbox and have little lag? the 60s or the 60s +? or is there any better video capture card to play the ps4 or xbox on the imac display? thank you
Don’t do this style if u playing online a lot. The money u buy 60s or 60s plus might as well buy another monitor
This was very good video I have a question if you have the time to answer I have a HD video capture AGPTEK Device (to record into my usb) I have been able to use it on my MacBook Air I have been using it with my Genki shadow cast I know it’s Frame rate is a bit choppy, but I’m interested in getting myself a hdmi adapter cable and I was wondering if the adapter could work as a output for use/recording for better frame rate?
I was looking for these video and thank you and will this things effect on speed of iMac?
I did not notice any issues with performance of the iMac as it is just displaying video. Thanks for watching!
@@JerrySchulze thanks man really appreciate. you reply our comments that’s mean a lot for subscribers like me
When you try to play Fortnite with this thing, is it going to will it keep the latest version of Fortnite or will it delay it so its v13.40 like when you try to download Fortnite through the Epic Games Launcher. Respond as fast as you can please before I buy the Xbox knowing I won't be able to play the latest version?
My question is, I have a little Lention USB-C hub. I do not wanna buy this elgato thing. Will the xbox work if i use the usb-c hub instead of the device (elgato thinng)?
Does it have to be connected to the regular USB-C or could it be connected to the thunderbolt? because I only have the base model!!
Will work on the Thunderbolt port
@@JerrySchulze Appreciate you bro. Thank you so much it just arrived!
Thanks for making this video. Would it work with Apple Pro Display XDR and LG Ultrafine 4K as well?
Should be the same.
How did it go?
howd it go
so is it safe to say I should buy it?
Just a heads up, I bought the cable you put in your description, but it does not have fast enough data transfer speeds to work with this method!!!
Interesting and I will check that out.
So the CableMatters cable is not working? Did you try any others?
What about connecting the older XBox 360 which has component connections ( a split 3 cables for red, white, and yellow and another 3 split for red, blue, green) to an iMac?
Dose this still work for m3 imacs? I'm buying a hd60 just from this video so I hope it works.
Would I be able to use any hdmi-usb c adapter (not specifically the Elgato because i don’t plan to record or stream anything) to connect a PC to my 2021 iMac and use it as an external monitor? I’m looking into purchasing a gaming PC and am wondering if this is possible!
Yes it will work as a display at 1080p 60 hz
Awesome! Thanks so much for getting back to me I appreciate it :)
Its not reading that my capture card is connected to my imac. The rest seems pretty simple. Not sure why its not reading though. Thoughts?
Why 1080p? It advertised 4K at 60 fps on the website. Double checked at 1:22 and it clearly advertises 4K 60fps passthroug.
why isn't a PS5 Option available in the Elgato Window Drop Down? Is it not possible to connect or whats the issue here?
If you bought the Elegato that streams 4K, would it output in 4K? You'd assume so right.
That one is not supported on Mac.
Jerry, question for you: I have Imac 2010 27’ and the output video is thunderbolt, so I have an adaptor to transform it from thinderbolt to HDMI, do you think it is possible ? I didn’t see your cables going to the back of tour Imac..
Didn’t the 2010 iMac have FireWire?
Can you use that as an extended monitor setup for windows, where the iMac is the second display?
Hi.. thanks for the wonderful video. Do you know if it’s possible to connect a Windows laptop (eg Lenovo for work) to iMac as a second screen with hdmi?
Yes it should work just like the Xbox.
@@JerrySchulze perfect! Thank you for that
@@JerrySchulze actually pal. Is it possible for you to do a video on this please?
Just bought the Affhausen adapter but it looks like my iMac is not recognizing it as connected to the USB C port. : (
Hi I may be getting a gaming pc just wondering if the iMac 2017 monitor will work for it?
Do you have a cheaper alternative for this adaptor? Thanks
I want to try this with the X one. Have you tried that yet?
I have not, last I checked this was the only one compatible with Mac. Maybe has changed since.
Will I be able to stream as well as I play my video game!?
yep, that's what the device is made for.
Hi Jerry I just picked this up for my PS4 and M1 iMac but I get "No signal" and the screen switches between that and black sometimes flashing green too. I am using the HDMI cable provided and have tried different USBC-to-USBC cables. I did momentarily hear some sound when my PS4 booted up any help? edit: the elgato breathes a red light im not sure if that's normal
I think some people have noted you need to disable hdcp.
Is there a window mode option? I don't want to play full-screen, I just want a resize-able window.
i have an older mac that only has usb a ports and thunder on the back. would i be able to use an hdmi thunder port to go into the mac
As long as the OS is supported it should work. Check Elgato's website.
Hello, thx I may have found the solution! Do you think it's going to work if use ma iMac M1 as second monitor if I'm pluging my Windows laptop during the home office day ?
I've just realized that this doesn't meet my needs, because what I need is a screen extension, and making a screen copy isn't going to help.
Hi Jerry! My iMac keeps saying that there is "no signal". What does this mean and how can i fix it?
thats strange. Any way you can send me a pic on Twitter?
hey, why can’t i plug it from the hdmi in the xbox with a usbc cable right into the imac?
Nice & Thanks :)
Can I use a normal usb-c to hdmi convertor instead of the HD60S+ ??
im stuck at the screen link option. I don't get any of the options or showing of any cables plugged into the iMac to connect the Nintendo to the Elgato app. I tried all the different thunderbolts. plsss help
