- Today, I am taste testing different MREs (Meal, Ready-to-Eat). My colleagues decided to make it a surprise taste testing. I really do not know what I am going to be sampling. I am going to assume the best and imagine it is as good as Costco samples.

Served in the USAF in the 80s. We ate 5 star meals served in one of two first class dining rooms or (since we were mobile air force) ate c-rations left over from the Vietnam war.
I love the EmmyMade channel when she tastes the MREs. From all over the world. It’s neat to see how they vary by flavours, and quality. And she’s always got a great way of describing what she eats

After hurracaine Maria in september 17 was a very hard time fpr food. After a few days the army soldiers gave army food. Most of it was really good and Iam very thankful for it.
The fact that I just wish MRE tacos weren't so brittle is probably a great indication of the progress MREs have made... And bringing your own hot sauce is a must.
I use to make army ration packs , corn beef hash,pasta and meatballs,treacle sponge all good eats

I was with the 82nd airborne in 02-05 and we had private civilian mess halls, the food was freaking amazing!

An old boss did 2 hard-core tours in Viet Nam. Lima beans & MF'ers always comes to my mind when C-rats are discussed.

I had a Hash MRE, opened it up with a cows eyeball looking back at me. I've never touched corn beef hash to this day. That was 30 years ago.

Chili Mac is an Army meal my Dad used to make very easy occasionally. Dad was an infantryman during WWII and Korea, after he retired before Vietnam. Dad would make his chili and beans with ground beef, then add macaroni with cheddar cheese. Once I went into the Army and in Basic Training at Ft. Benning GA, in 1986, Chili Mac was made differently with just chili meat sauce and macaroni served with 2 slices of white bread, green beans, and fresh lettuce salad. We had was Trappey's Louisiana Hot Sauce to go with it. Most of the guys never had this before and hated it. I had no problems eating this and it was an Army staple but it took a long time before it became a standard MRE. If I remember right it became a T-Ration which was a sealed square metal tray designed to feed 12 soldiers usually boiled in hot water and served. I still make it myself because of the memories of being in the Army once upon a time.

Im old - we had a beans and franks MRE back in the late 80's, it wasnt bad and none were really good. Everyone liked the Pork and beef patties

You left out LRP ration the Marines had them and we traded our C rations for them because they wanted our Cs
I don't blame them. Those early LRPs weren't good except for a couple mains like the dehydrated spaghetti.

The absolutely worst MREs I've ever been issued was the veggie omelette and spinach fettuccine. The best was probably the MCW (Meal, Cold Weather) turkey tetrazinni.
Country captains chicken was my number 1 MRE in Iraq 2003. The bonus for me, I was the only one on my platoon that liked it. So I had a steady stock.

I'm shocked that MREs have only existed since 1981! That's the year I was born and long after my dad was in the Navy (he got out in 1969). I've never tried any MREs myself.
The French have some good RCIR meals. I really liked the duck and red quinoa salad.

OMG the four fingers of death were my favorite MRE and I was so bummed when Ameriqual discontinued it. I loved cooking them with local potatoes and rice in Afghanistan. Mmmm
We still call food prepared for a company or larger unit “hot As”. Often prepared at a dining facility and packed in containers for easy transport to the field. Where it can be easily served in a field dining area. A holdover from WWII A rations. Theoretically it’s applicable to meals prepared in a field environment using a field kitchen. Though I’ve never seen it. I’m in aviation. Hot chow, hot shower and hot bed to sleep in every night.

When I was in high school we lived on Camp Lejeune, there is an excellent glass case display in the library of MRE meals throughout history.
My all time favorite while I was in was beans and hotdogs. I loved it.
We had franks and beans - it wasnt the worste by a long shot, Everyone I knew liked the beef and pork patty meals. Out of the second gen MREs the Chicken a la king and a chicken/ham slab was the ones everyone avoided

I ate C-rats for most of my service. I liked most of the meals. There were short cans and tall cans. The main difference was that short cans were better cold as opposed to the tall cans needed to be heated to taste the best. Those I didn't care for were for the most part, were tall cans that needed to be heated. While I did try MRES , it was after I had left the service.😃
I was in the Canadian Military. Both Navy and Air. Within Canada and at sea, the food was usually very good. We got BBQd steak every Thursday. Even the IMPs(MREs) weren't too bad considering.
When I was in service we had the MCI's but still called them C-Rats. My favorite was ham and eggs, the worst was beef slices and potatoes with gravy, AKA beef and rocks.

The beef frankfurters “4 fingers of death” really aren’t too bad. They’re more like summer sausages than hot dogs. I didn’t mind them.

Your elucidation on the deliberative ,concept, history and improvement on the organizing principles enabling food for those masses,( the population of our country which are funneled toward preservation of the "state") . That pithy focus video elevated the mechanism of effective and consistent nutrition for the "operational arms" of the political state in regard to the scores of engineering processes the are essential to the exercise of power in a global free for all
You tried the humanitarian aid MRE which is considerbly lower tier than military issue imo. Those are made to feed refugees and generally one is enough to sustain you daily unlike the military MREs.
Until you say, "let's get this out onto a tray", it's not an MRE. Where's Steve when you need him. 🤣
The worst case of the Hershey squirts I ever had was on a five mile “fun run” during boot after eating the four fingers MRE. The last three miles were spent trying to out run my own stink.
The FUNNIEST thing I heard at boot was my buddy Dave moaning “Damn it, I joined the Navy so I wouldn’t HAVE TO %#*?! RUN!!”

Excellent video! I really enjoyed it! Just an FYI - The Devil's A$$ ration was actually a Humanitarian Daily Ration (HDR). Similar to an MRE, but meant to be given out during humanitarian relief. They're vegetarian so as to be a more universal item that has lots of calories that can be eaten by a more wide range of cultures. MRE's are generally better and come with the ration heater and drinks 👍

That was not an MRE. He held up a humanitarian daily ration which is very different than an actual MRE.
Most U.S. Military members are grateful for our Chefs ! They have to make dried canned foods and make it some how edible! Most do an exceptional Job! As a U.S. Army Veteran, Thank You, for the great food you for the wonderful meals!

As an Army Veteran let me say: EASY ON THE CHEESE! That stuff will stop you up QUICK...and Veggie MRE is TERRIBLE, we couldn't GIVE those away
I served in the USAF from 1981 - 1990. I ate only 1 MRE. If you're thinking of joining the military and don't want treat MRE's, join the US Air Force. We ate in restaurants with a menu of items at every meal. If you join the Army, Marines or Navy, then get used to eating crap.

The Veggie Omlet isn't bad if you heat it up and break it up before you open the packaging. Also hot sauce will also help, and the Beef Enchilada isn't bad either if you do the same like the Veggie Omlet. Also, the Country Captain Chicken (aka: The Triple C) was actually pretty good.
Soldiers always get to test new stuff: embalming, preserved food, GPS, the itnernet and so much more.
The veggie burger in bbq sauce was one of my favorites. It was actually pretty good and since it was a vegetarian meal, it had the best sides a dessert. Plus no one else wanted it for that most part.
Pro tip for eating MREs, if the one you get is nasty and you cannot trade. Take them like medicine; take a bite, choke it down weith water. Repeat. Also, eat the snacks after the main course. This will help get rid of the taste of the main course. Having said that, most of the MREs that I have had were pretty good, as long as you cook them. If you have to eat them cold, Chili Mac is best.
One of the most interesting facts to me about WWI is that the Germans basically surrendered because they where starving. Much of the motivation of the average German gunt to advance into the enemies trenches was that they could possibly steal their food.
I’ve tried the majority of MREs and to me it’s honestly not that bad. People are just picky and don’t appreciate what they have now instead of what they were serving decades ago. To me I give it a 7/10
In 1991 while stationed in Germany I had the dubious displeasure of eating A Chicken ala King MRE. Upon eating the second bite I immediately emptied the contents of my stomach. To this day I can't eat Chicken ala King.
27 years in the Infantry and this is so far off its ridiculous. Never heard anyone call frankfurters 4 fingers of death, enchiladas were one of the good MREs and so on. Like internet called the Kevlar when it was new the Fritz and claimed all the soldiers referred to it as such when nobody and I mean nobody did.
Cherry fruit cake from the mid 80s was the bomb !! My uncle was in the army and used to give me mre's to camp with .. as a kid

I had completely forgotten about the omelet MREs. They were at least edible though, they just had a horrible texture. The hotdogs were a different matter all together. It was litterally like eating a package of hotdogs raw, with no bun or condiments besides tobacco sauce and they were so incredibly salty that I could barely eat them. I never understood why the hotdog MRE was allowed to be distributed, it just didn't make sense as a meal. The beans were terrible too, just baked beans with a tomato colored sauce, devoid off all flavor, except one again for five times the salt that you would actually want them to have.

My Grandfather was a WWII vet. He would talk about eating "Shit on a Shingle" which was cream of chipped beef on toast.

@NuttyProductionsOfficial I think they called it Shit on a Shingle because it was this creamy, chunky, "mystery meat" concoction on a slice of toast. They should have called it Vomit on a Shingle because that's what it looks like. Surprisingly, every now and then, my grandmother used to make it for breakfast. My Dad remembers growing up eating it as a kid every now and then in the 50s and 60s. I guess it was something that lasted well beyond WWII era times.
If I had been regular Army, the tuna with noodles,plus the tiny Tabasco bottle, left me me anything but regular

During 1990, in Saudi Arabia, the French soldiers exchanged their meal for our MRE. The next day they didn't want it. LOL
My favorite MRE menus was from the late 1980s around 1988-90. The later ones sucked in the 90s but the even kept stuff like Beef Stew, Chicken Stew, Tuna and Noodles, and Beef and Noodles even in the 2000s during Iraq and the Stan I had no complaints. Chili Mac and the Cheese Jalapeno was a great total upgrade. This was my experience being a soldier, but the fresh cooked foods at the FOBs or Forward Operating Bases in Iraq during 2006-08 were awesome except for the US Embassy in Baghdad sucked ass.
Lemme see . . .what DOES "MRE" mean to GIs? "Meal, Rodent Enriched" . . . "Meals, Rejected by Everyone". Who has a different definition of "MRE"?

I prefer the vegetarian MREs. In basic I always went for tuna or the vegetarian bbq “rib” sandwich.

Sorry. You completely forgot a major point. MREs are NOT given out willy nilly. They are only used when you would be far from base for a period of time. Army commanders prefer to use regular food until there is no choice. Regular food means Field kitchens. And oj this you completely forgot another point. The old way to cook food was to use normally open fires or inefficient field kitchens. These produce poorly cooked food and masses of smoke. This allowed enemies to tell where their enemies were. However this was solved in the 1800s nymBritish chef Thomas Soyer who created an efficient oven which allowed the smoke to dissipate.

Whats funny if i was r&d mres for the military i would be listening to civilians who order and test them. But it would be me listening to ease of use does it heat right and taste would be top 3 i listen to. But a friend brought home some of the considered nasty ones . Im like whats wrong with it as i ate them
I am 47 joined the British army at 16 I've never had any problem with rat packs bacon grill biscuits Brown just eat if and move on !
