    ⚠ please watch Da whole video before u comment ur opinions and hate letters 💅
    ALSO i wanted to talk a little more abt the NC series briefly cus i felt like i didnt explain it good enough (READ b4 u comment abt NC levels) (also watch the vid first so it makes sense lolz):
    YES the NC series did become repetitive and bland, and i think some people might see that and think of it as proof of asset reuse hindering artistic potential, going against everything i said, but that is NOT TRUE!! ❌
    the real truth is that thoughtful asset reuse WAS the reason for any ARTISTIC innovation in NC levels. (the reason any cool ones were ever made- they took the original assets and built on them with creative spin, met with clear respect to the OG level, all fitting my definiton)
    any of that bland, repetitive nature of the levels came down to people cashing in on free creator points, building off the stuff i talked about at the end of the video. just like the line series! nothing to do with asset reuse as i preached it, but a problem of the rate system
    So yeah, everything to do with the rate system once again, and a clear parallel of the whole thing with the line series, just in the past. not an issue of asset reuse, but an issue of creator point farming. OFC if u watched the video to the end u know what im talking about so i better not see angry comments abt NC levels :)....
    sorry i didnt explain that very well in the video! anyway i hope u guys liked it!!!! :D LOVE U ALL!❤

    The asset stealing part is unfathomably based. I think a big reason why so many gd people hate asset stealing is because many think effort is indicative of a level's quality, so stealing assets feels like cheating to them. I wish people cared more about the context and ideas behind the level

      honestly (sorry that i didnt watch the whole video) i would only hate on these levels if they didn't have any effort taken into making them, like if you were able to pump out 3 of these in a week and they were all being rated/featured/epic because then its just a low effort content farm
      edit: ok thats exactly what you said but yea the id only be mad at these levels if the only intention was to get creator points

  • @Sp4rce
    @Sp4rce 23 дня назад +113

    Watched the whole video! Just wanna say thanks for covering the topic in a way that doesn't just say "bad" "worst trend" or words to that meaning. I've got some things to comment on so here they are:)
    I just wanna say as well that I'm not on twitter or any other socials except discord and RUclips, so people can make whatever posts they want and only hear one person's perspective.
    I think when it comes to morals, I want to make something very clear. I don't make these levels for creator points, or for downloads, or any of that. I make them because I genuinely love the game "Dancing Line" and I want to keep it alive through geometry dash. That has always been the goal and the purpose of these levels. I also want to point out that the level remakes were voted on by the players, so to hear that so many of them don't like remakes is a bit hypocritical... I mean what do you expect?
    ● Dancing Line, Dashing Line, Typhoon and all of my upcoming levels don't reuse assets
    Let's address tidal line first. Yes it reuses assets. Yes I did not contact OniLink for permission. Yes it shouldn't have been featured (but again, that's a problem with the rate system and not with me) Despite what people say, the level is far from lazy, it took me 2 painstaking weeks to build and easily like 50 hours in the editor working between a full time job and wanting to make yt videos upload daily. It was hard.
    I gave credit to Oni and Zoink at the end screen and in the description of the level and the video. The reusing of assets wasn't to rip off the level, it was to make the level more faithful to the original, that's what remakes are all about:)
    Next up is Line Circles, this took a couple of assets such as the iconic diagonal structures with 2 spikes, and I turned them into 3d, nothing major. It also took the gray background which I could've easily made but chose not to. I want to just quickly mention all of the nine circles RATED remakes as well that literally take the drop and turn it a different colour... I just took the drop and made it 3d, again nothing unusual for the nine circles remakes category, I wanted to make it exactly the same while also making it equally as chaotic!
    ReLinE literally just took a few pixel art aliens, everything else was made by me. Don't see any huge issues here 🙃
    Linegregation took the same block design and structures, and made them 3D, It hasn't been rated yet and I don't think it will be, but yeah, we'll see.
    I also just want to note that if the original creators have an issue with any of my levels and the taken assets, its completely within their right to contact me and we can sort something out (even if it means a take down)
    They all know where to find me and haven't contacted me yet, so yeah.
    Again, thanks for covering the video in a more open minded way and discussing the issue as a whole rather than singling out one creator, as there's plenty of other creators who have much more cp and have blatantly copied entire levels let alone just assets. I don't condone any sort of stealing if you aren't going to do something unique with it, and I've made something completely original with the assets and haven't just out right stole them for a free cp farm.

      thanks 4 watching hahahaha but yeah i really don’t think these levels are very problematic as you can tell by the video hopefully and i’m glad to hear U don’t make them to farm creator points lol.. i think many people myself included thougut this just because of the repetitive nature and the fact so many people create for creator points lol. but even if that’s not true my larger point was to talk abt creator point creating and i hope you did not mind me using ur levels for example x)
      i really just wanted to use these levels to bring up a larger discussion about asset reuse and the rate system and all that, i really could’ve done it with any levels but these were rly hot with this tweet going around and it was topically relevant so… hope u don’t mind ur levels used as a big example lmfao

    The main issue I have with line levels is that dancing line is its own concept and should be used to make original deco on top of, not necessarily used as a base to put other levels' designs onto, solely because its a 'dancing line' version. Even though platformer levels play very differently to normal levels (like dancing line levels), I feel like more people would have a problem with, say, a 'congregation but platformer' level. I wouldn't mind its existence so long as it doesn't get rated. If it did though, why would anyone try to make anything new for creator points when they can take an already popular level and turn it into a different type of game?

    On the second part, I do want to see you elaborate on how much power creators can have over others making remakes/reusing assets before it becomes a legitimate issue. Because the first thing that came to my mind is how people frown upon Disney for taking down projects that reuse their assets is frowned upon, while these same people don't do the same for GD levels.

  • @yavidhi
    @yavidhi 23 дня назад +8

    great points and great presentation
    btw the hard part about creator consent is determining what ideas taken from a level require creator consent. for example, using the same basic blocks as someone else is generic enough; that block combination doesnt "belong" to them. but using a structure design from them could land you in gd jail. like you said, where do you draw the (dancing) line?

    • @norkbork
      @norkbork  23 дня назад +1

However, there is one small thing that I have to say about the two types of creators, those who do it for digital status and those who do it to create beautiful art, but there is also a third type of creator, those who create for fun and to enjoy themselves, and while they can also fit into either of those two categories before, they can also not fit into either of those two, and they just create because they want to. Not every creator either wants creator points or wants to make beautiful art, some just do it because it’s fun.

    I think a new rating or badge (like the copy or 80k+ objects one) should be added that signifies the use of borrowed assets or ideas from other levels, and i think these levels should be judged more harshely on wether they get creator points.
    This would solve a lot of issues and dissincourage the use of assets.
    Also, if the creator of the original assets/ideas asks so, the rating/badge should be removed.

    The thing about creator permission, I don't think it should be a requirement, rather a bypass. If the original creator says it's completely OK, then you don't necessarily have to follow the rules outlined in the video. If the original creator says they don't want their assets reused, then even if you follow these rules, you shouldn't do it.
    If the creator green-lights it, then do whatever, if the creator denies it, don't do it at all, if the creator doesn't say anything, try to follow these rules.

    dang, a whole upload from something i said? that's pretty neat :3 here's my response to the things you say:
    - i agree that taking inspiration from others' levels is fair game. i mean, that's all art, it's essentially impossible to make something truly original. I'm alright with blatant copying and pasting, IF the original creator gave consent to this. otherwise, it is theft, even if credit is given. not every creator wants their assets reused, and that should be respected. remaking decoration in your own style? totally good. stealing? bad. that's my opinion anyways. i should also note that this is specifically for RATED levels. if none of the line levels were rated, i wouldn't really care-but being given stars and the stamp of approval by robtop is a big deal.
    - i also think that it's noteworthy that while the line levels are clearly styled after others' levels, the fact that assets are straight-up copied and pasted is not clear. I'm sure many people aren't aware of this. even i originally thought that sp4rce was remaking the deco from scratch, only using others' deco as reference and inspiration.
    - i actually do think the line levels are quite cool. i just wish sp4rce got permission to copy and paste assets, and again, without permission they should not be rated.
    - regarding demon mixes: this is such an old and widely-accepted form of level that I'm bias to say that it's different. it is extremely clear they're copied from the original source. but this is really subjective imo, i could honestly go either way here. it FEELS different but logically i am not sure.
    - regarding nine circles levels: copying a simple pulsing effect fees very different to me than copying assets, and i don't think that can reasonably be kept to oneself. that's like if the inventor of spawn loops got mad at others for "stealing" spawn loops, right?
    - on my perspective limiting creativity: for one, i do not believe asset reuse is fundamentally wrong-i believe that it is wrong without the consent of the original creator. if OniLink had been asked beforehand, i would have zero issue with tidal line. two-i think the congregation jumpscare example is a great counterexample. it's blatantly copied and pasted, but it's funny, and it would seem silly for Presta to get mad about this. i have no issue with congregation jumpscares, and honestly I'm having a hard time finding the true difference. I'll have to think more on that, i don't have a clear conclusion on this point and it seems my ethical beliefs are contradictory.
    - on remakes: again, it's basically impossible to make art without stealing some ideas. plus, generally, remaking a level comes from a place of love for the level. making a remake involves taking some ideas, merging them with your own ideas, and creating something new based on this. that isn't theft at all, in my opinion.
    - i do not care that the line levels are repetitive. i don't know what goes into making one, so i can't confidently claim they're low-effort, but either way i don't really care. I've always maintained that creator point farming is just how some people enjoy engaging with GD, and that's cool by me.
    (no ill will towards you norkbork by the way, this was a good and thought-provoking video)
    EDIT: just read sp4rce's comment. he seems like a reasonable guy with good intentions, so i have no hate towards him either. i still think tidal line should be unrated (unless he does work something out with onilink) but I'm happy to hear he's working on more original stuff.

    Creator points have always been fundamentally flawed as the updates came out and I think it may possibly just be worth disregarding. I literally do not care anymore bout the rate system. If it gets better, good on them but putting everything to the rate system is kinda foolish. Personally I never had any problems with any of the trends (including the line trend). They still take two existing ideas, merge em together, put the work in to create something fun or funny with their own skill. Remakes are fine as well, I see those levels rather as one idea and someone else putting their vision. Keeping it faithful to the original is even harder to do imo.
    Robtop already made this game grindy as it is, I don’t blame farming for creator points. I think regardless of the problems with the game, inherently there is much good that comes with it and its worth acknowledging that this game is fun to create in if you just allow it to be.

    As a former Dancing Line player from 2017-2020, I always thought that DL recreations in GD was a great way to make the game popular again, and also for some reason not a lot of people are taking about Dancing Line finally getting new levels after over 3 years of not getting new content, although it's not as popular and comparing the wait to 2.2 is not even a comparison tbf.
    Btw what do you think of Dancing Line?

    I see your point and agree for the most part, despite what I expected coming into this video. I do however have some problems with your stance as a creator. First of all, these line levels (especially ones on the more detailed side like tidal line) have absolutely no reason to blatantly steal assets when they can be inspired by and made by hand. You are stealing someone else's work without their permission and then using it for less work in your own level. However, I can see how the line might become more fuzzy with things like the nine circles remake where there's not really another option than to reuse the designs.
    I am very uncomfortable with the idea of someone using assets I hand crafted for my own level, to be stolen and used for theirs. Even if this is, like you said, to pay homage to my own level. I would never accept someone blatantly stealing my block designs or anything like that. However, my stance on no asset stealing has it's own issues. For example I use font packs for my own levels for, seemingly the same issues I mentioned, taking someone else's work and putting it in my own level for the benefit of me. But I think the difference is these font packs are uploaded volunatarily and are made specifically for other people to use and copy, whilst the vast majority of levels are made to produce a piece of art unique to them.
    This is a very complex issue that can't just outright be one way or the other. Asset stealing is entirely not allowed or it is allowed. There has to be nuance, and I think it's very important that creators are considered since they are the ones being affected. I think the best solution would be to get creator permission if it isn't already previously allowed (such as font packs), otherwise it would be unfair towards the creator getting their own work stolen for what is basically a level reusing a concept and stealing your idea with very little change
    The other issue I have is the comparison of remakes and asset stealing, and I think these are very different. Taking inspiration from a concept or design is amazing because it builds off a great idea and extends it with your own nuances and interpretations. Stealing assets does NOT do this, it blatantly copies without any nuance or change. These two are entirely different, one is building off a concept but doing your own thing (in most cases) while one is just stealing.
    Overall I think this video was good and your point was well versed, I just wanted to point out these issues because I personally have zero tolerance for my assets being taken. And I also want to say that my stance was definitely a bit changed from when I started

    • @norkbork
      @norkbork  23 дня назад +1

      yeah i agree w most of what you said, it’s why i said that if creators see it and they don’t like it they should have full rights to tell the person to change their level. i also wanna say again that i wasn’t saying they’re the same as lebel remakes but it’s the progression of that thought, not that it’s the same. just that it does end up going down a more creatively restrictive mindset. but tysm for the great comment, ur types of comments are why i make these :) i don’t have all the answers and i say what i see and think but that’s why i make these videos to create discussion

    comparing it level remakes feels a bit far fetched, this is more about the stolen assets then ideas. Taking ideas is fine but stealing assets from another level and copy/pasting them throughout the level with little to no original deco is where the problem lies. These levels barely have any original deco.

    Really good takes! I had basically the same thoughts when I saw the complaints people had about the line levels. The one part where you lost me a little bit was your thoughts on creator point farming. I have been making gd levels for 7 years, and i think there's a lot more that pushes people to create than just creator points, the main thing being just the general attention your levels receive. The nexus uploads Sp4rce is getting, along with the fact that even their unrated line levels are easily hitting 10k downloads are probably making them want to continue making line levels just as much, or more than them receiving a rate. My point is that I don't really think it's fair to make the statement that the creation of these levels is tied to what robtop rates, or the creator points system.

    • @norkbork

    I agree with some points you’ve said but I want to address something that I think was the original tweets intention.
    Blatant asset reuse is obviously bad and while the utility of the assets are different I still think so, look at natural disaster and woodkid.
    What creators should be doing is looking to vit12. His series on making a demon mix might seem unoriginal, but he actually cared to acknowledge that he shouldn’t copy and he put his own twist on it.
    In my opinion, just making the style 3D doesn’t constitute a difference enough. I think that sparce should’ve adapted the style of tidal wave and congregation to make something they could actually say was their original work.
    No hate to you or sparce, I just think that this plays a greater role in the original arguments.

    @gym3857 22 дня назад +1

    i think there's also another way to look at it. going off of how there were separate discernable/categorizable frorms of originality talked about in this video, i feel as if extending that thinking could help this discussion. to me, these dancing line levels are original in the sense that they had never been done before. they all had some sort of work put in: work was needed to make the gameplay system work in the first place; work was needed to purposefully arrange assets and decoration, no matter if they were stolen or not; nobody did it before Sp4rce did. this is a weird analogy, but think of those tik tok fan edits of shows/movies. the characters were not made by the person who posted the content, the images and video being used was not made by them, the music used in the edit was not made by them, etc., but the reason we can appreciate the editor's work is that they meld these prefabricated elements to express themselves; even if the content is not "their original art", the presentation or expression can be.
    and in the end, i still think all of this conflict is due to the percieved importance of the rate system. if someone put your art on a t shirt and sold it, thats an issue. you did the bulk of the work, but now a second party is using your work, applying less time/effort/emotion than you did while making said art, and is using your art for personal gain, all while you're left with no profit due to lack of credit. however, if that same someone made the t shirt not as a commercial product but as a personal belonging, its a way to show appreciation for the original art, and even the art of making clothing. same with the tik tok edits i mentioned earlier: their purpose is to show appreciation for the editing artform and the source content. basically this boils down to a "capitalism ruined art" argument.
    in the end, if Sp4rce didn't get any creator points, then those who take issue with the levels would just see the work as a fun project Sp4rce made for themselves and others.

    Honestly, I agree with the whole "reusing assets is fine just give credit and make it your own" thing. All of Sp4rce's dancing line levels after the first one clearly do this in basically every way, and there was definitely a lot of effort that went into the levels. Besides, if you're remaking a level like tidal wave into dancing line form, it's kind of challenging to make it still very recognizable as tidal wave and also make it completely unique. The whole goal of the level is just to make a cool remake that people can enjoy. Plus, all gameplay gets stale at some point. You could say that robtop stole assets from other levels and failed to change it by not making the gameplay original, especially in the first 7 or so levels due to the fact that it didn't change very much. (sorry for yap fest just kinda wanted to share my opinion even if it's basically the same things you said.)

    I hate watching argumentive videos so dont get mad at me if i mentioned something you already covered in the video
    These line levels are driving me crazy, not because they are repetitive, since in that case, just dont play it, i mostly hate how people are playing those line levels rather than the original, some people didnt know about tidal wave and knew about tidal line im not even joking, and the fact that its all stolen bugs me out even more
    the thing i hate the most is that its just line, like its not anything special, its just tap tap tap, play the original dancing line instead, its way more fun, and ive beaten all the levels so trust me with this one, wheras this sp4rce guy is just stealing other peoples deco in the worst way possible and making unfun gameplay with them embarassing the original creators of the deco
    the thing thats genuinely annoying about the repetitive gameplay is that people are proud that sp4rce made a line level just for a creator contest that they immediately made him win despite the lame and repetitive gp just because its a line level, yes he won $50 in a cc when i was supposed to win it, he even broke a rule but they didnt care and made him win anyways
    another thing is the fact that tidal line got featured and tidal wave recieved a rate only, yeah these levels arent supposed to be rated, its stealing assets and using them stupidly over just tap tap tap tap its not fun at all, instead of people recognizing other cool creators in the awarded tab or anything, they just focus at sp4rce level, and, lemme tell you something, he isnt the first person to make a line level, he was the first person to make a decorated line level, but it was stolen anyways, i dont know who made a dancing line fanmade in gd first, but i made one before 2.2, i want this dancing line bs to end ong

    "The gameplay gets quite repetitive"
    um, that's just wave but vertical. Wave could also be seen as repetitive if it wasn't made challenging and varied. The gameplay in the dancing line levels are still quite basic since player are new mode, making it feel repetitive.
    Though maybe being the only one gamemode for the entirety of the level does contribute to the repetitiveness. Sp4rce's most recent (and upcoming) level the typhoon for example, only switch to this gamemode once in a while, which is quite refreshing to see.
    Amazing video and opinions though.

  • @EJ48

    I'd actually argue against what you said in part 2 with creator consent. unless their designs have a tm next to or a happy little circle with a c in it, their intellectual property isn't actually... property and they have no rights over it. people aren't out here getting patents over geometry dash block designs. there is a point where you don't want to be doing it with the sole intent of being malicious, but I also don't think people have any obligation to take down levels or ask permission to use assets that aren't actually "owned" by the original creator

  • @Eagleleadsmc
    @Eagleleadsmc 22 дня назад

    The root of the problem comes from the fact that levels made for digital status are getting more recognision than those made because of a passion for art. Time spent playing line levels could have been spent playing something that was made for the latter reason. Im not here to dismiss thinking the line levels are unnecessary because of this. Its not little children getting angry, its pretty justified.
    As for the tweet, id like to think aerma had these thoughts i just described that wanted to get out there, but just couldnt find a way to communicate them, so she just ended up using the "stealing assets" as a shield, even though thats not what was really annoying her about these levels. It is very normal, when you hate something, but just cant describe why, it is very common to find something unrelated to how you truly feel about it, just so you can justify disliking it.

      i don’t really agree, i think that the idea these levels are taking away from anything substantive in the gd creating sphere is a little ridiculous, they are just a few little levels and at the end of the day whos to say what a gd level shoild look like? there’s no reason gd needs to always represent artistic ideals even if that’s personally what i want to see. and, these levels are not impacting the artistic world of gd at all. there is plenty of space to go around in the creating sphere and i argue these levels, by bringing up these discussions about asset reuse in fair manners, actually helps the creative community more than hurts it by giving us clearer guidelines on what could be acceptable, or at least having us talk about it. and that will enable more creativity and care in the future , hopefuly! but again, these levels really are not causing a huge impact and the idea that “time could be spent playing more artistic levels so these are bad” is not something i agree with. there’s no one way to play and make levels in GD, sometimes levels can just be fun and silly and meaningless

      @@norkbork i dont disagree with level being silly and meaningless, but there are people who want to find levels that they will find artistically valuable, but when all they find instead is levels that dont interest them, its not gonna leave them very satisfied. You have a finite amount of time in a day, and when you spend more time trying to find levels to appreciate than actually playing them, it can be frustrating looking at these types of levels and thinking "this is not what i want, i dont want to play these levels, but they keep wasting my time".

    based as always, i never understood the twitter discourse surrounding these levels since they are clearly transformative enough to offer a new experience

    Tbh if they don’t like it than simply ignore it, there are a variety of things that appeal to every person and vividly take inspiration from. Let’s be real there are some levels that just copy and paste but eh

    WHAT by Spu7nix has 8 seconds in a row of just stolen assests, and nothing else. Should it be unrated because it has stolen assests? No.

    To me, the rating and even featuring of these levels show RobTops double standards when it comes to rating levels. I remember seeing a tweet from OniLink where Tidal Line got a higher rating than Tidal Wave. THAT to me is fundamentally flawed in the rating system. Not so much the level itself, but the rating system giving more praise to a less unique level than its original counterpart. I don't hate these Line levels, but I think they shouldn't get a higher rating than their original levels.

      agree, but that just comes down to rob having much harsher standards for extremes. which is a flaw for sure

      @@norkbork well yes, and that is one of the big problems with this rating system. You addressing the real issue in this video, which IS the rating system, is a good thing. Great video honestly!
      I missed your videos a lot. You're among my favorite GD youtubers out there, as I love these informative and thoughtful videos.
