Ah... I can never get enough Dire Straits! Suggestions for two more: "Your Latest Trick", probably the original studio recording. And "Private investigations" from the Alchemy live album. The studio version of that one is good too, but that live performance is fantastic.

I think I remember Mark saying in an interview that the Walk of Life is the process we all live by of falling down and picking ourselves up again and moving forward anyway. Failure is part of life. That's the concept of all the bloopers in the video, that no matter how good you are at things, failure is still part of life.

One thing I've noticed about Knopfler - after delving back into their music - is he's definitely got a love of the common man, the working man. Like Springsteen, or maybe Billy Joel, his songs immortalize working class people. Even Skateway (one of my favorites) is a musical portrait of a city girl who's young, with her life in front of her - "she's got her own world in the city, you know it can't intrude on her." Telegraph Road is a road in the city I grew up in (Toledo - and it goes through Detroit). Many of these songs - though for sure not all- are about Americans. It's not surprising that he later branched out into country music. He clearly had some American musical influences (Blues and Country) so I think the video is ok. In 1985 this song was MASSIVE. It was everywhere. I think the video still conveys the American spirit of trying, failing, and winning if you stay in the game long enough. The good and the bad, the walk of life. TBH - that attitude is a bit more American than it is British - nothing against the British at all. Always interesting to watch you break down a song musically! I was a singing most of my life - and sadly a voice teacher told me not to play an instrument because it would detract from singing. Worst advice I ever took.

Sadly, the bag with casettes got stolen so we were left with Bob Marley's Gold in the glove box and this album in the player. From that time on the album Brothers in Arms always invokes vacation feelings!

Great review. I think the video shows the parallels of a rock band performing to athletes performing. Different walks of life, so to speak. Each are preparing for the big game in the dressing room and then walking out on stage, where initially mistakes are made in the first two verses, but eventually, by the final chorus, passes are completed, catches made, the duck walk is about to make an appearance, life is good. On a side note, there is a big release of remastered live Dire Straits performances due to be released in early November, 2023. A listen and review video of the whole Brothers in Arms would be wonderful, but the new release may be something to keep in mind (Alchemy would be sensational).

A freind in college was a classical violinist. She hated most rock because it was too “loose, and fuzzy”. Her new boyfreind asked her to a Dire Straights concert. Next day she was asking all about Dire Straights, and wanted to know why they were so tight. I told her that part of it is Mark is a guitar natzi, and they do a full play through the afternoon before every concert.

Some of us still buy cd's 🤣
Back to "Brothers in arms" and that cinematic feel - there's a lot of references and framing of Dire Straits music in cinematic terms.
They're not re-inventing the wheel here, but they're making a very high-quality wheel for a classic motor and doing it with a lot of taste.
Nothing here can be accused of overplaying (aside from the haircuts + fashion 🤣), it's just a great groove with that repetetive rockNroll guitar playing a pretty intricate riff that's the backbone of the song. I can hear Buddy Holly and Bruce Springsteen in here, it's a great conglomeration of sounds...
Anyway - to the point, on the subject of cinematic - you should check out some Sigur Ros (Aegis and/or Takk albums) and Godspeed You! Black Emperor (1st two albums and the ep are good choices). Both bands have that cinematic epicness to them with that sort of downbeat/night driving feel to them + nothing beats a stretch of empty motorway with some Sigur Ros late at night.
