I've been playing bass for 43 years semi professionally and am adding this. I've never done exercises like this very often but this one is a goodie for working on and keeping coordination. Loved learning that "I Want You Back" riff before i even started the lesson too! What a GREAT bass line! Subscribed. See...ya can teach and old dog new tricks! :)
Thanks James. Great lesson for practicing. Very effective way to ensure that the one finger per fret technique is used, and obviously very good for learning more about the fret board. Thanks a lot.
Another great exercise! It really helps. Just begin as slow as you can manage and then build it up. Step by step. You’ll get there eventually just like me. Glad to put this one in the exercise-bag!
James, thanks for the lesson! I've been doing this, but also in seconds, quarters and quints, across all modes of a scale. I have a question - why not include the C note on the G string? I practice on a 5 string bass and play every note in the position. Thanks again!
This is a great exercise, James. It's become part of my daily practice along with The Spider and Curing the Crab.. I love this because it's musical and makes sense; I hate it because it hurts my brain and my pinkie to get it right. I keep wanting to cheat the little finger but I'm resisting. It's a challenge!
Thanks for sharing your comment Charles! I'd always thought that the "spider" and "curing the crab" were the same drill...... I need to do some reading! 😜😎😉
Glad you learn something out of the videos and thanks for sharing that. The stretch will come over time. :-) I would usually suggest to start with the smaller frets then work up to the bigger one as your hands expand. :-)
James thanks for your fantastic teaching. A question - How does one go about creating a solo in the style of jimmy Johnson or Michael Manring in "When Last we spoke" what are the steps on how to go about being melodic. All the best.
Hi James, I’m having a problem knowing the fingering on each string and note. I can touch each string with 3 of my fingers and the sound on the string is nice. I have no idea how to hit the string with one finger?
Hey Cindy! That bass drill is quite advanced for a beginner, but if you stick with the One Finger Per Fret method, it should be possible and will teach you plenty! You may find it easier for the fretting hand if this exercise was transposed up the neck - probably to C on the 8th fret - where the finger stretch is less painful.
@@ebassguitar Just wondering if that was what you said. Sounded a little strange, that's all. The lesson is excellent, and I appreciate you taking the time and effort to put them up for us. Thank you. (Still not sure about using the "one hand per finger technique"....)
@@ebassguitar I think he was just teasing a little, James. You said "one HAND per FINGER", rather than "one finger per fret" ..... it happens to me all the time..... and I'm not even a famous bass instructor!! 😎
Great drill. Thanks James!
Thanks James. Great finger exercises. Very helpful.
The pleasure's mine! Glad you like it Ian! All the best!

Thanks! Great lesson. Missed you! Put my bass away awhile ago. Gonna grab it right now.

I started learning this a few weeks ago and it doesn't half make my right hand hurt!
Just continue with the pace, Andy! Best of luck with your bass playing!

I found it hard for about 30 minutes and then medium. I can really feel how it will improve my left hand.
It will! Glad you learn something from the video! Cheers!

Did he really say he does this when he's developing the "one hand per finger technique"? Asking for a friend....🤔😁
Yes he does 😆
Can you explain your question a little more please?
