Hey Tony, I'm not a big bass person, and don't really pay as much attention to skillful bass players as I do to guitarists. But when I watched your performance with Kate and Dave several months ago I was totally astonished. And the fact that you were using a fretless bass made it even more amazing. You killed it. IMO this live version was even better than the original studio version and the 12" version, and you played a huge part in that. Thank you for your legendary performance!
Man when i watched that performance I was like "damn! that bass player is killing it", great performance and it was awesome to learn about you and your involvement!
Thanks for the story Tony. Yes, Kate Bush is a unique artist who created exquisite albums. I'm one month younger than you Tony so she had the same effect on me when she burst on to the scene haha. I still have all her albums. Happy to see she's introduced to a younger generation now because of Stranger Things.
FUN FACT: Kate would never tour, like most musical artists do (cuz that was where they made money back in the day), and she said something funny like "what? i spent all that time making a record......and you want me to go out every night....and recreate it? That makes no sense!" (That's partly why all my bands are improv, or structured improv! Instant Music! No two shows are alike! Sooo much fun!)
Tony, you're awesome. Not only as a player, but you're amazing as a person. You are so clearly a good guy. You don't get to play with all these great musicians by being an ass. Part of being in a band or being called upon to play in one involves being a guy people can get along with. You're that guy. Thank you for being such an inspiration.
You are ADORABLE!! Have loved your bass playing since the 80s. The Firm, Blue Murder, so many other projects, love it. Thank you for sharing these wonderful memories with us. Cheers!!
5:00 Yep, totally agree 'The man with the child in his eyes ' so ethereal . I understand that Kate wrote and composed the song when she was only 13! Amazing. Thanks for sharing your story -and knowledge. 😊🏴👍
Wow. That means so much. Thank you. I love that we made this version our own. Heavier than the original. I think it suited the vibe and the lyric nicely.
Tony, you are still as handsome today. I am from the states and became a fan after Hounds of Love came out, I own everything album she has made. She is so talented. Your song with the Firm called Radioactive was a big hit over here. Thank you for making this video, I am so happy seeing Kate get her due over here, even if it’s 37 years late.
Cool commentary on Kate's song, which was so great. I still can't believe she's not a bigger name than she is. BTW, the Firm Mean Business album still gets regular play in my car CD player...Live In Peace still gives me chills! You rock, sir!!
Thanks so much. She’s probably a bigger star in the UK. She didn’t tour too much so that may have “held her back”. 🤷♂️😊 Cool on Mean Business! I love Live In Peace too. It went to another level live also. 🙌🏻
Scrolling thru the comments, 1 thing I think gets forgotten about is that you contributed to a genuinely worthy cause. Speaking as a USA child of the 70s & 80s, I'd never heard of Amnesty Int'l until U2 came barnstorming thru America in '87, which is when you did this performance. I joined up for it once I went to college the next year. TYSVM for taking part in this.
My husband (the musician in the family) spotted you in a clip from this performance in another video and then your video popped up as a suggestion. We are big fans of you Tony! We love all of your work. Thank you for sharing this story, it’s really awesome fans to hear your recollection of your experience. We are crossing our fingers that we will someday get to scream Blue Murder live again though!
Hi Tony!! I’m SO glad you made this video! I’m a musician and composer, and my wife is an artist, and a musician as well. She plays bass. I showed her the video of this performance a couple of weeks ago. She straight away said “Wow that bass! He sounds incredible! Is that fretless?” She was absolutely in love with your performance, your playing, tone, etc. As am I! She’s at work right now but I’ll save this video to show her when she’s back home. She’ll be absolutely ecstatic to see that you’ve made a video regarding your incredible performance with Kate, David, Stuart, and Kevin! You all owned the stage equally during this amazing gig! What a pleasure it is to hear the story of your experience that night, and the magic that brought you all together. Talk about stars aligning! I was born in 1990, but if I could travel back through time, I’d go back to see this show 🌟. All my best! Coming to you from Canada’s East Coast 🇨🇦- Parker PS! Looking forward to that book you mentioned! Take care 😄

Hi Tony what an absolute honour. I love that video. As a fellow bassist I have always admired your fills. Can’t believe I am messaging you. To play alongside Kate and David must have been amazing. Thank you so much for the insight. As an 80s kid I can say with no uncertainty that was great hair😎

As a teenager I grew up listening to and buying albums and posters aplenty. I have just stumbled across the video with yourself lovely Kate and the one and only Mr Gilmour. This version has such energy and passion going on. Thanks so much for your little insight in the making of this track. 👍
Thanks for sharing this with us Tony. People sometimes forget the rhythm section, especially when you have people like Kate and Dave on stage. You added so much to that magical moment. You’re a legend man!
Hello from California, Tony! I’ll never forget seeing you with The Firm. You are among the most gifted and technically brilliant on your instrument but what was so impressive about that particular evening was your professional composure in those settings. You looked like you very much belonged among legendary veteran talents that had recorded some of the greatest, most treasured albums in rock history. Now for the purposes of staying on topic, I happen to be a huge fan of Kate Bush (The Firm debut album and Hounds Of Love are my 2 favorite albums from that year). Her live performances were rare and she was deserving of no less than the finest in accompaniment, on stage or in the studio. You, sir, were brilliant as always and certainly made the most of that opportunity
Thank you. That means a lot. The Firm was a rare and special moment. It was always very relaxed and organic from day one. I didn’t realize how precious that was until later.
Love it Tony ! As a fellow bassist, I've been listening to you since the days of The Firm and its really great to see you here talking about when you were younger and later performing with Kate. You are spot on per your philosphy of playing ! You mentioned Roy was a nice surprise he really is an icon. The whole video here was as if we were sitting in the pub having a few, telling tales. Stay safe out there and dont get too lost in those old theatres !
Hi Tony. Came across that video after watching a recent clip done by Warren Hewitt. I remarked to Warren that the bassist is brilliant...and he replied ' that's my friend Tony Franklin'. You and the drummer drive the song along like a freight train. Doesn't get better. Thanks for the video...look forward to more. Pleased to subscribe to your channel.
Since we’re talking about Kate, I saw and heard the video for “Wuthering Heights” for the first time the other day. My wife being formerly an English Lit. Major, I knew the story. But the poignant, vivid and somewhat despairing art of it brought me to tears. It is truly Haunting. I was into KISS and AC/DC as a kid in the late Seventies but really wish I’d explored Kate Bush also. All’s Well That Ends Well! Love your channel and your music!
Thank you for sharing your recollections. I saw you with The Firm, at the Los Angeles Forum, and years later at DiPiazza's in Long Beach, CA. I started playing Fretless bass in 1986, partly because of your mastery. (I was also a huge fan of the late, great, Doug Lunn.) I really appreciate your skill and artistry. Thank you for all of the great music.
Amazing story! Sorry just knew you from this “Running up that hill” came back. You are an amazing bassist, love your interpretation of the song and added your own flavour. Incredible live version.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, thoroughly enjoyed it. People can joke all they want about mullets and hair, but you had the hair we all wished we could’ve had in the 80’s, 90’s and even today! Only surpassed by your stellar bass playing! Cheers.
This stories are PURE GOLD. We all love the songs, the gigs but, the stories told by the musicians that play them, what happen, how they done it,is so goooood. Thank you

Love this update, Tony! I bought Blue Murder’s eponymous album and instantly got hooked by your bass lines. It’s only justified more people are discovering your talent!!
Thanks for the story and your amazing playing, Tony! I knew the album cut of the song for a while before I ran across this live version, but ever since then I've always recommended the live cut. To me, that's the definitive version of the track. I realize it's a band effort rather than strictly Kate's arrangement, but that's what makes it great. I always cite your driving bass as the heart of it along with Dave's guitar and vocals replacing the original riffs. Solid playing with essential contributions. Absolutely elevated the original track to new heights!
Thanks for sharing, Tony! I’ve been a fan of yours since discovering the first Firm album. Love your playing on the studio cut of “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling.” Monster pocket and groove on that one!

Much appreciated 👍🏻👍🏻
You smashed it 👍👊 and great backing vocals too. All the best !
Thank you thank you.
Your vocals were GREAT. I was trying to find out who you were and not your hair dresser ;)
Haha yes indeed. She was the full package!! Such an amazing talent. And agreed, it’s great she’s being exposed to a new younger audience
FUN FACT: Kate would never tour, like most musical artists do (cuz that was where they made money back in the day), and she said something funny like "what? i spent all that time making a record......and you want me to go out every night....and recreate it? That makes no sense!"
(That's partly why all my bands are improv, or structured improv!
Thank you so much. I truly appreciate that!! 🤩🙏🏻
You are ADORABLE!! Have loved your bass playing since the 80s. The Firm, Blue Murder, so many other projects, love it. Thank you for sharing these wonderful memories with us. Cheers!!
Aww. Thank you so much.
Absolutely love this heavier version. Ive watched this clip so so many times, never get sick of it! Great playing Tony😍
Thanks so much.
I love the heavier version too. I think it suits the lyric and the vibe of the song nicely. 👍🏻🤩
5:00 Yep, totally agree 'The man with the child in his eyes ' so ethereal .
I understand that Kate wrote and composed the song when she was only 13!
Amazing.
Thanks for sharing your story -and knowledge.
😊🏴👍
Yes you are correct. She’s amazing. Wow wow wow… 🤩😂
@@FretlessMonster The penny's dropped - quoting lyrics in a chorus from one of Kate's songs😀 😃😄
Very droll, Sir !👏
👍✨
Absolutely legendary bassist and the trio of you Gilmour and Kate was just sublime. The best version ever. Incredible
Oh you’re very kind. Thank you.
Yeah Kate is incredible.
Radioactive! 37 years ago!! Wow.
Cool on Mean Business! I love Live In Peace too. It went to another level live also. 🙌🏻
Loved the Firm and Blue Murder!!! Love hearing from Musical Artist about recording and live performances! 😉🎶👍🏽
Thank you. I enjoy sharing this stuff 👍🏻👍🏻
Just watched that yesterday. Great playing Tony. Love the hair too )
Haha. Thanks 😊 👍🏻🤩
You kicked ass so much on this one.
Its so good, thank you very much.
I truly appreciate that. It was a memorable occasion. Fun to relive it.
Well said. Yes indeed. Thanks for mentioning that.
As an aspiring artist, you are an inspiration and truly an underrated 80s legend in my book.
That means the world. Thank you so much.
Thank you Tony. I appreciate you, your music, and your story telling. ❤️
Thank you. I appreciate THAT!!
Thanks so much Kristi. I truly appreciate it all. I love sharing this stuff.
Never say never with BM though my hopes aren’t high. 🤷♂️🙃
Coming to you from Canada’s East Coast 🇨🇦- Parker
PS! Looking forward to that book you mentioned! Take care 😄
That’s really great. Thanks for sharing that. I hope your wife enjoyed it.
Yes the book is well underway. 👍🏻😊
DAMN!!! How the hell did I not realize that was you playing? I love your work with Blue Murder, The Firm, and others. But as a lifelong fan of Kate (and YOU!), I am disappointed in myself for not realizing you played on that. KUDOS to you Mr Franklin... you are a big part of the soundtrack of my life. Rock on!!! P.S. I was just driving around in the sun today in my convertible, cranking the entire first Blue Murder album so that others could enjoy it as well! :D
Ahh it’s all good. It’s like a hidden surprise at the end of a journey. 😊👍🏻
Nice one cranking BM!!
Well Tony - I knew you as a phenomenal musician, but I had no idea what a great storyteller and how amiable you are. Thanks for sharing this with us. Glad I came across your channel!
That’s super cool. I truly appreciate that
Oh, and not only did you play bass with Kate Bush, you also sang with her! Your BV's were awesome!
Thank you. It was an incredible honor. 🤩
And he played with the God of Guitar Himself. Which would, for me, be an even greater honor.
Tony, remember you're English.."honour" ;-)

What’s bV?
What a gem, huge thank you Tony! ❤
Thanks so much. That means a lot 🙌🏻🤩
@@FretlessMonster With true pleasure! Thank _you_ for sharing such a shining diamond (wink to DG 💕) and showing the current generation what fine wine is - both back then (fine wine with a fantastic hairdo, who already knew how to serve a song) and now (fine wine with boundless experience, authenticity, humility AND edge)! Love you! ❤️🥰🎶
That performance was epic, mate!!!
Truth!
Cheers!! Thanks
Everybody understands the concept of humbleness.
This guy is on another level.
🙌🏻🤩 Thanks!
Hear I am at 5am with my first cup of tea listening to this, what a great story and fretless demo, loved it.
Great! Thanks for that. And good morning!
Love Kate Bush!! "Running Up That Hill", is one of the best 80's songs ever. You look epic Tony! Your hair was fresh and new back then. You were sharp dressed for the times...
Thank you so much!!
I've always loved the fretless sound in Kate's work, and it's so nice to "meet" one of the people who worked with her to perform it. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. You allow us to briefly touch and taste the magic. 🥰
My pleasure! Yes the Fretless compliments her music perfectly.
Thanks for the story and explanation and describing the Approach! Sounds like a very Creative atmosphere and so fun to make. You can tell by the constant grin on your face, recalling it. Thanks!
Happy positive a d fun memories for sure.
Great meeting the beautiful “hair dude” from that video! Nice to meet you. Thank you for encouraging people to search out Kate’s catalog. She’s a lifelong favorite artist of mine!
I love hearing you tell these stories. As a musician currently blessed to get to do it for a living, I hear the gratitude of this gift in your voice. Where would we be without the joy of music? Sending love and low frequencies your way 🌞🙏
Thanks so much. I truly appreciate that.
Yes I am blessed and very fortunate. It is privilege to do what we do. I don’t take any of it for granted 🙏🏻🤩
Profound thoughts sir . "being blessed" , and " the gratitude of this gift " . Is that you , Bill ? Pete
@@FretlessMonster Nice one , Tony . I've always found that 'luck' or 'lucky' completely random and impersonal . Just happened . Whereas blessings mean so much more individual and purposeful . Love your craft , and video . Thank you very much . Pete
@@peterbellwood5412 you might be on to something there…. 😉🙏
Thanks so much Stuart. It was amazing to be part of this.
And the 80’s wouldn’t be the 80’s without the big hair!! 😂🤩👏🏻
Great story and thanks for the insight to your bass playing on the song! 🎵🔥
You’re welcome. Thanks so much.
I'm ashamed to say I didn't know you and I saw you in this revival video. I am happy to hear that you are an excellent bass player with a long career and continue to play your bass with mastery. Very good and fun channel here. Live long and prosper Tony Franklin.
Nothing to be ashamed of. Good to meet you. That means a lot. Thanks 😊👍🏻
What an incredible story! So cool and exciting times for musicians those days and totally agree about your comments on Kate Bush!!
Thanks so much. It was an unforgettable occasion.
@@FretlessMonster yeah!! The bass was killer forgot to Say! 👏🏻🙌🏼
As a teenager I grew up listening to and buying albums and posters aplenty. I have just stumbled across the video with yourself lovely Kate and the one and only Mr Gilmour. This version has such energy and passion going on. Thanks so much for your little insight in the making of this track. 👍
👍🏻🤩 Thank you!
Tony, the bass sounds incredible on that performance. You really made it your own and did a great job keeping time with the drummer.
Excellent Tony 🎸🎸🎵🎶
Love your bass work here. It runs like a steam train through the song. Impressive!
Brilliant , really great colour . This song was an anthem to us and that bass and beat drive the emotion.
Great. Thanks for that.
Yes the driving steady bass line is a big foundation of the song. 👏🏻
"Out of the Blue" - points for that reference
👍🏻🤪🤷♂️
Thanks for sharing this with us Tony.
People sometimes forget the rhythm section, especially when you have people like Kate and Dave on stage.
You added so much to that magical moment. You’re a legend man!
Thanks so much.
That really means a lot.
And I’m so thrilled I could be part of this special performance with Kate.. and DG! Who would have thought all these years later. 🤷♂️🙏🏻
Haha. Thanks. Much appreciated.
Yeah I think that was the most lost I ever been at a gig. 😂
Great. Thanks. Love Warren.
And welcome aboard 🤩👍🏻
Since we’re talking about Kate, I saw and heard the video for “Wuthering Heights” for the first time the other day. My wife being formerly an English Lit. Major, I knew the story. But the poignant, vivid and somewhat despairing art of it brought me to tears. It is truly Haunting. I was into KISS and AC/DC as a kid in the late Seventies but really wish I’d explored Kate Bush also. All’s Well That Ends Well! Love your channel and your music!
Better late than never. You probably appreciate it more now. There’s a wealth of beautiful music in her catalog.
Dude you were the highlight of that performance! I'm practicing my bass more because of it 🤘🤘🤘🤘
That’s great to hear!!! Thanks for that.
Two very different settings. Cool though.
Happy you picked up the fretless. It’s a fantastic instrument
Amazing story! Sorry just knew you from this “Running up that hill” came back. You are an amazing bassist, love your interpretation of the song and added your own flavour. Incredible live version.
That’s cool. Much appreciated
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, thoroughly enjoyed it. People can joke all they want about mullets and hair, but you had the hair we all wished we could’ve had in the 80’s, 90’s and even today! Only surpassed by your stellar bass playing!
Cheers.
Haha great! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic bass line in this live performance
Thanks so much.
This stories are PURE GOLD. We all love the songs, the gigs but, the stories told by the musicians that play them, what happen, how they done it,is so goooood.
Thank you
Truly appreciate that. I have lots of stories. 🙃🤩
Man child that plays incredible Bass 🤘🏻looking forward to your Book Tony..
Haha. That’s me.
Thanks as always
I too as 17rr old fell head over heels for Kate and her music. I play the concert video every few months, I was lucky enough to be there on the night many years ago.... it was great to come across this from Tony and get the back story and insight. Great stuff.
Wow. Great. You were there. An unforgettable night for sure.
Loved this video, thanks for taking the time to create this. You come across very well! It is such an awesome version. Can't tell you how many times I've listened to your live version in the last few weeks!
Wow great! Thank you!
Hats off to Tony Franklin! I love hearing stories like this. Thanks Tony.
Thank you so much!! 🎩
🤩
Your one of the best Tony. I still play Blue Murder loud in my car. The riffing instrumental bit in the middle of Billy is mind blowing, So much power. CHEERS! and God bless you.
Thank you so much!!!!
I named my cat "Billy" way back when the Blue Murder album came out. He lived to be 18 years old. I miss him. :(
Great video. Thank you for sharing the story.
Thanks for posting this! It's always a pleasure to hear your stories but more than that, to hear you playing.
Thank you!! 🤩👍🏻
Tony you are an honest good dude, loved this video and your insights to how it came to be, you were not out of place with the legends that are Kate and David, credit to you love of the bass
No idea how this video popped up to watch, but super glad I did
Ah thanks for that. It was a career highlight for me, for sure.
Loved this
random vinny appearance
Tony What an honor to be able to converse with you about music!! I love Gilmours Steinberger whammy guitar bits and your bass line is AMAZING!!!
Thank you.
Yeah Gilmour got some negativity about using the Steinberger. I personally think it’s perfect for this song and performance 🤷♂️👍🏻
Love this update, Tony! I bought Blue Murder’s eponymous album and instantly got hooked by your bass lines. It’s only justified more people are discovering your talent!!
I truly appreciate that! I’m not done yet 🤷♂️😂😂
Thanks for that. Truly.
I feel like we captured the right energy and message of the lyrics. Thrilled I could be part of it.
Thanks for sharing, Tony!
I’ve been a fan of yours since discovering the first Firm album. Love your playing on the studio cut of “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling.” Monster pocket and groove on that one!
Thank you. Our version of “Loving Feeling” holds a special place in my heart! 🙏🏻🤩
Great story, really interesting and informative, thank you
Awesome Tony, so great to hear the behind the scenes story of this song. I have followed your work since the 80's and you have always been one of my favorite bass players. Keep up the great work and please share more of those amazing behind the scenes stories.
Thank you so much. Truly.
Thank You Tony for sharing that piece of history. Hope everybody discovers more about The Fretless Monster Legend, like Kate and David as well !
I truly appreciate that 🤩😊
Great story… Yeah, any time you pick up the phone and it’s David Gilmore asking for your help on a gig, you’ve arrived!
I enjoyed seeing the JD again, one of the coolest basses I’ve heard on any record. That instrument, simply put, has its own soul! Your version of the Chattanooga Choo Choo off your first instructional video demonstrated every tone a fretless should possess. It was too cool for colored TV!
Anyways, great backstory, thanks for posting! Take care!
Ah thanks for that. Haha yes indeed with DG!
Great that you recall the original instructional course. The tone is everything. (Well a few other things too!)… 🤷♂️😂
Well it wasn't David Gilmore, who is a jazz-fusion monster guitarist that played with no less than Wayne Shorter, but David Gilmour! :-)
#spelling
Hi Tony!!! I had never heard of Kate Bush, but I came across that song on You Tube with you & David Gilmore, so I listened to it & immediately fell in love with that song!!! I am a big fan of yours & David Gilmore!!! You guys are all great musicians & singers!!!😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much. It was a big hit for Kate back in the UK in the 80’s. She was more popular in the UK. I’m happy you found it. 👏🏻🤩
Fantastic, fretless bass player AND one of Edward Scissorhand's first clients!! 😉 ✂️🎸🎶 Loved the hair, the jumping from side to side, and of course, most of all, the wonderful fretless bass playing! Thanks for all the years of music!!
Haha. Thanks so much. Truly appreciated
Tony - thank you very much for sharing your memories & thoughts with us! It's also very educational. That live performance was (and still is :)) spectacular! What also caught my eye in live performance were the smiles you all have shared with each other - you did amazing job!
Thank you. I love what we did with the song. And the smiles are spontaneous and priceless.
Been a Kate fan for a long time. This live version of the song is my fav! I keep telling everyone to watch that live video for the best version of the song. Also love The Firm and Blue Murder. Plus the ba'zillion other sessions you have done. All the best.
Cheers. Thanks so much Tim!
Thanks so much! Really enjoyed these stories. What a fantastic thing. A woman who was so ahead and OUT of her time becoming a superstar AFTER her time. Brilliant. A light in these grey times.
Very well said!
Thanks for watching.
Hi Tony,
I can’t wait for the book! Love this video. Great talents playing great together. 😀🤟
Thank you Malina. 🙏🏻
You're Brilliant, Tony. Your playing was as groundbreaking as Levin's, "that other Tony". in terms of style and substance. What an amazing time to be growing up and learning guitar! Thanks for the inside story on this KB Classic! Best of Continued Success in the Future!
Thank you so much!! 🤩🤩👍🏻
Mate, one of my favorite parts of the video is the way Kate exchanges smiles with everyone in the band at one point or another. Or at least it seems that way. You can clearly see her do it with David and Stuart. Not sure if you got a smile, too, but she is so lovely in this video it would have melted me to receive one from her.
I love that part too.
I got a kiss on the cheek from Kate at the end of the night. Precious memories
