- TO ALL OF YOU TROLLS who feel the need to be rude about the Coldplay reference - my friend recognized the song as being Bittersweet Symphony but didn't know who sang the original. She listens to R&B, cut her a break! It took me a little bit to recognize it as Bittersweet Symphony but I told her it was The Verve at 1:46. How about a little gratitude that I'm sharing my personal video with the youtube community for your enjoyment? Sheesh. Some people are such a**holes!

I wonder if anyone noticed that it is Brad Mehldau - one of the most amazing jazz piano players alive - doing the real magic in this piece.
The real ones do.
Proof of how great a musician John is. He figures out this song 15 seconds before the performance. And Brad just jumps in. How freaking awesome is that. And it's a flawless performance. I so wish I could've gone to this.
I still pray for the day John records this in a studio.

Incredible cover... A huge fan of both Mayer and the Verve... People say he ruins it.. He really doesn't.At all. Can imagine most of the people who say that only know this one song of The Verve's.. Great track.. But not their best..

It's two different people talking. One person thought it was Coldplay, one person questioned it. Ever had that moment when you know it isn't a certain artist but can't remember who it actually is? Chill guys. Everyone's human.

A really good version of the Verve's brilliant song written by the great Richard Ashcroft. It is one of my favourite songs and for me to think another version is good it must be special check it out. I like it very much

Don't hate on the girls for saying it's coldplay. They're partially right. The original song was the Verve featuring Coldplay. Lots of people think it's a coldplay song because coldplay sometimes plays it at concerts. So don't be so hard on them. (:

All yapping about coldplay and the verve, when we should be congratulating john mayer on his greatest achievement, playing with BRAD MEHLDAU! that guy is a GOD, & he's playing it simple so mayer can keep up. and the arrangement is fresh, but in no way better than the verve's. keep alive people, dont be zombies!!!

the verve/coldplay mixup might've occurred because Richard ashcroft and coldplay performed bittersweet symphony at live 8. Great performance I might add

first song on the first album I ever bought, Urban Hymns by The Verve. 5 years later I discover John Mayer, because he was on the same episode of Live At Abbey Road with Richard Ashcroft (lead singer of The Verve). Now he's covering Bittersweet Symphony, glorious!
Only thing he needs to do now is to cover some Ocean Colour Scene, come on John! Bit of Riverboat Song or Get Blown Away!! :D

John Mayer is an incredibly Musician! I loved this concert, and wish I could find the DVD of this Concert!
Love john and no matter what he does, but if he woulda had a nice 2-3 minute guitar solo somewhere in here it would have been that much more EPIC.

nice cover, and I forgive your friend but only because Coldplay is one of my fav bands ever, also the sound in piano and electric guitar sound just like them.
Oh goodness, I make the error of saying the original.. Jeez, I'm sorry, but the video I had seen and the version that was On Demand(yeah, I'm old school and I listen to music On Demand) was the one that had The Verve featuring Coldplay. They were featured in the song, and the two artists sound similar, it's an honest mistake. Still, no need to call them stupid or hate on them for their mistake. Jeez..
wish the chatter box would have shut her hole. the problem with going to concerts today is people are talking thru the concert or playing on the phone instead of enjoying the talent.

If i didn't know the song and the author (well The Verve actually sampled some parts from the Rolling Stones song..long story) my first guess would be Coldplay too because of the Coldplay-ish piano playing at the intro.
@oldham42 i doubt he figured out on the spot. im sure they agreed about what they were gonna play before... and it would be tough for brad to figure what john was playing, since he plays it a note lower than the original...

Its funny, to watch this video you have to use the the ''Internet", the same "Internet" you could use to find out who sings this song...which is sung by The Verve....I knew who sung this already, but have no problem using Google to find out if I didn't.

@dctt76 Unfortunately not, but I'd love to! I just drove to Phx for the 8/18 show, then back home for the Bowl. That will be 3 shows for the year for me, which I should be happy with - but a little bummed I probably won't see him again this year :/

I hope you all know that the rolling stones wrote this melody and that the verve paid for part of it but plagiarised all of it and they get no royalties for the song as a result. look it up.

Na. The Original Song is just by the Verve, Ashcroft used a Riff by the Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger & Co still get their money for every play in the Radio, but the Song by the Verve has got nothing to do with coldplay at all.
Coldplay, along with other bands like oasis have been covering this song. So does John here.

Actually mick jagger doesn't det a dime and apologized to Ashcroft - one of the stones old producers(?) would not give The Verve the rights ,retains all rights to the song. So you can't blame The Stones for this one ,,,

Coldplay? The Verve,, who also got sued,,,and has nothing. This song was/is Sooo Damn Good. All credits were given to Jagger/Richards from the Rolling Stones. It's BS because they crushed this awesome song and anything the Verve could have been.
