My oldest son is in his early 20's and he has type 1 diabetes. But thank God for this piece of article ruclips.net/user/postUgkxibD_L3sDyYENL5CwePCd9plRBqjzw2mw At first he thought he had the flu and was lying down on the bed for three days until his sister took him to the hospital. They took his blood and it was 600. What I do not understand is how he could have gotten it, since no one in the family has it. But he is winning the battle now. This is good stuff.
Let's talk about how pharma has been price gauging insulin for years, and that's why people go to Canada. If the people who are hoarding and trying to resell goods can get fines it's time for big pharma to do the same.
Not only did my insulin go up in price, I used to get a 3 month supply with copay. Now it's 1 month forcing me to pay 3 instead of 1 copays. Thank insurance companies.
Me and my mom are both Type 2 diabetic. I remember my mom always buying the small vials and I didnt know how much they cost, that was until I was diagnosed and because I had insurance I didnt really have to pay a dime and that all changed when I turned 18. Once I turned 18 I was glad I was semi working, and found out one little tiny vial cost $24.88 but because I need both N and R I always buy two. Which cost me $49 plus it for both me and my mom, I understand business but at the same time if their going to be that expensive for a thing that's so small they should double the size, decrease the price just anything for people like us who have to pay because we dont have insurance.
leicanoct yeah, sadly pretty much, not too sure about other countries, but the ability to get enough insulin for the lockdown is nerve-racking. I mean as a T1Diabetic, I go through insulin relatively quickly, slightly nervous.
My Father who had diabetes and heart failure just passed away early this morning, the doctors are not sure if covid-19 was involved or not, but they are treating it like it had. He passed away around 0330 this morning @ Shady Grove Adventist hospital in Montgomery County,MD. My Father was 68 yrs old (Edited) Thank you all for your condolences, me and my mom and my sister thank you for support. It’s been very hard since this morning, because we are not allowed to see him all together, only my mother was allowed permission to see him but decided not to do to the risk involved. We already picked out a funeral parlor in the nearby area. The hardest part was calling the rest of my family and friends and telling them that he had passed.
I'm going to shorten this 10 minute video down to 2 seconds, " because their bodies are already in a state of and at risk for higher inflammation". The 10 minute video could have been a 10 second video
I have type 2 diabetes, and my last A1C was 7.0, and my doctor is happy with this. I don't have any heart problems. I have a higher than normal blood pressure, but this and the diabetes are treated with medications. The bottom line is that I'm one of those persons who almost never becomes ill. I haven't had a cold in over 20 years. The flu is around every year, and I've never had the flu. Every once in a while, I'll feel a bit crappy, but I'll recover in a day or two.

I am a type II diabetic, and have been on a Keto diet since January. My A1c last month was 5.6. All of my other labs came back excellent. I’ve lost 32 pounds, and have stopped having cravings for sweets. My CRNP was delighted...but she had warned me against the Keto diet. I’ve not told her...why bother? So much for enlightened nutritional education in the US. I am sheltering in my home except for twice monthly trips for groceries at 6 AM, when my store has hours for senior citizens. I get cat food, dried foods, and perishables, such as baby spinach, bananas and grass fed beef in secure packaging. I am 70, and at the store I wear a mask as a defense against sneezers, I take my own Clorox wipes and give the cart a thorough wipe, and I wear big yellow Playtex gloves. Overkill? No, catching the virus is overkill. God bless us and save us from this plague.

I am a type 2 guy and take a 500 mg metformin pill twice a day; no insulin. I have been able to maintain an average fasting blood sugar of 90-100 daily; sometimes high 80s, but it hasn’t been over 110 in a long time. It has not been easy and I had to give up a lot, but I don’t want to live my life chasing blood sugar with insulin. I basically became keto-ish! I eat NO sugar, and cut down almost all forms of white food (carbs) such as potato, rice, flour, and even ‘low or no’ sugar products. Just eat a bunch of green veggies and fish and chicken overall.... a Big Mac , slice of pizza, and steak and fries are rare-ish treats. The hardest to give up was the beer and wine but oh well, they don’t recommend alcohol while on metformin. Overall, I noticed I felt a lot better, more energy, and lost weight which has stayed off. My cholesterol has stayed in an excellent range as well so have avoided the doctor recommended statin pills. I am not a doctor, but I would suggest any type 2 diabetic to try and face the fact that we can’t eat like we used to, and if we want to reduce the pills and insulin stuff, avoid carbs, sugar, and maybe even alcohol... believe me, after a while, you won’t miss it... for motivation, check out the RUclips movie, The Sugar Movie, or Netflix’s The Magic Pill....

@@crittendenmandy6833 There is no cure for type 1. It is an autoimmune disease that destroys the cells that create insulin. The title is not accurate. It should be "How it can potentially be dangerous for some diabetics." The JDRF CEO is right. You can't just make blanket statements as not all diabetics are at more risk.
I guess you listened with a very biased ear. I did not hear him say that aka diabetics. Although i follow a lot of keto and carnivore influencers who say this daily or I use to follow them, I unfollowed many. What the influencers say are people with metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance; That's not diabetes as yet. But there have been healthy active 30-40 year old that have died from this virus. Others are carriers but I guess you did not hear that. How about the liver transplant patients; women and some men fighting breast cancer and a host of other issues. You heard diabetes. Sad, may I recommend reading the transcript.
Diabetics make choices every day. A mistake, bad decision can have very hard consequences. As for the title it is accurate. And to let you know I have lost one of my cousins to this disease, before this covid-19 disease.

Last year I was diagnosed with type two diabetes. I did speak to my primary care physician. And she did tell me yes to be worried but don’t be fully worried. She told me I’m healthy Miamian system is really good and I change my eating habit from last year. And she upped my dose of met Forman to 500 mg a day. Long as I continue what I’m doing and don’t eat anything bad that I’m supposed to. And also I’m trying to stay as far away from people as possible. So that means I’m only going out it’s necessary and I’m staying inside for the majority.
I have T1D too, scary as I am not completely sure about how the pharmacies will allow me to get enough insulin for these lockdowns, so I am a little nervous, I’m even a little nervous of not having the ability to get general supplies.
My mother just went to the er last night she is not infected but is in severe condition pls pray for her as i will pray the saftey of your mother aswell Edit to those thank you for the thumbs up and please everybody i wish you all the best of luck and will continue to pray for everyone please stay safe and stay healthy also remember we are all in this together
The grocery store last week was wiped out of meats, including bacon, and I use a keto diet to keep my blood sugar #2 near 100-115 most of the time. No heavy cream, but did get some half and half. I don't eat pasta at all, but did find my zucchini "noodles". It's more difficult during this time due to the craziness surrounding this covid19 hysteria to get the sort of food needed for diabetics. I'd gone for months with no need of insulin using keto diet, but in past 2 weeks twice I've had to use some when my blood sugar hour after eating was 135-140 range. I hope the stores return soon to a more reasonable stock of goods after the hoarders finally decide they've done enough damage to the country.
Use raw veggies....low glycemic... only need 25 grams of protein....add coconut oil to your plan.....it is very helpful....I purchase mine at Big Lot ...60 oz for $7.95... 1 tablespoon before meal ...2 to 3 tablespoon in food and 1 tablespoon before bed....

Both my parents (boomers), and my only living grandparent (aged 87), have diabetes AND heart disease. I was incredibly concerned about their health before this crisis. Now, I’m just praying their efforts at social distancing and isolation from others will make their risk of contracting COVID-19 low. Things could be worse, though, as both my parents are privileged enough to work from home. It would be terrifying if they still had to work in the public, as many people do. I really feel for those people still working in delivery, grocery stores, hospitals, and other essential services that have these kinds of chronic illnesses that make it very dangerous for them to contract COVID-19. They have no choice but to go to work and risk their health.

Even though I have a fully functioning pancreas. But since I am immunocompromised, I have to be careful. Ha1c is perfect, but I’m back on on insulin cause of my transplant meds

Hey, I feel you. I have had Type 1 diabetes since I was 13 months old. I am still in school and am on an insulin pump. We diabetics have to stay strong and stay safe during these pandemics. Every one else must too. We are in this together.
I got mine down to 2.1 the other night. I didn't feel a thing different. A day later the meter just said LO. A little shaky but it still surprised me. Corona = 600+ units for me. I'm not going to slowly drown in phlem.

I'm not a diabetic but many people, here in the UK are, all I can say is : Thank goodness our NHS provides ALL medicines, including insulin, completely free of charge. Yes, we pay National Insurance but the small amount deducted each payday is well worth it. And it is small compared to Private Healthcare, plus there are no exclusions - every ailment is included. Bravo the NHS and our amazingly wonderful doctors and nurses. 👏👍👏
Except when you have need of some diagnostic care you wait for months while we get it immediately. Plus millions in the UK buy private insurance there, too, to get better care because the NHS is very limited. We had a visitor stay with us whose daughter waited 6 months to get a very necessary CT scan when we drove by several places here in the US where she could have gotten it immediately, and it would be covered by insurance so she would have paid little or nothing. Both programs require you to pay, but ours provides better care overall and more choices. Give me our system any day.
@@Happybidr yes, but if I wanted, I could pay for the CT, MRI, etc, privately, get the results and transfer them to the NHS for continued care. So, I would be £200 out of pocket, however, if I needed an operation, chemo, etc., the NHS would cover this. Also, if a patient is considered urgent, they are "fast tracked" through the system. All that said, the NHS needs much more money to enable it to function at it's optimum. Hopefully, when this nightmare is over, it will continue forward with the government fully supporting it. Unlike in the past, many governments have not invested adequately, which sadly, became glaringly obvious in the past few months and the scramble for beds/equipment began. Shame on our governments. Apart from being pampered, the care in the private sector is no different to the care in the NHS. Doctors operate/work in both sectors (the doctor seen in a private hospital is the same one you will see in the NHS hospital). As you can probably see, I'm an avid supporter of our NHS 😊😊

Although this story explains Type I and Type II, one problem is that "the general media" uses a big brush to paint "diabetes" in their stories, when they are largely discussing Type II. I contracted "Juvenile Diabetes" (Type I) at age 33 (as did Mary Tyler Moore). It all depends upon when a person encounters their "trigger", which odds are occurs before adulthood. I went to the hospital in diabetic ketoacidosis, as I didn't understand what was wrong at the time. My doctor said that the bright side was that , at 33, I could understand the diagnosis, and practice better control (after directed education), rather than a young child, rebellious teen, or set-in-my-ways older adult. I have done my best for over 30 years now, and have ZERO diabetes related complications. My motto became, "There are NO forbidden foods, only NO unplanned foods". I try to maintain that 3-tray balance scale between food, insulin, and activity. What the body of a typical person handles automatically, I have to do manually, without my "auto-pilot".

So I have been taking care of and monitoring quite a few other people but I have not been thinking about myself. My Type II is not well maintained because basically I am an idiot when it comes to my own health. Guess it is time to wake up. Again, thanks for putting this video out there.
Go on a low car/keto diet, and Intermate fasting. I recommend you watch videos from Dr. Berg, Dr Ekberg and Dr Jason fung. It will help understand insulin resistance more and beat diabetes easily. Your A1c will thank you for it.
The 2 people above are right. My doctor put me on Metformin to help control blood sugar. It helped with blood sugar but not with getting rid of type 2. I started a ketogenic diet while intermittent fasting and eating in a caloric deficit. After 6 months I was down 50lbs and taken off Metformin because my A1C was finally within the normal range. I'm no longer diabetic. :)
My son has type 1, and something they didn't mention is that the risk of going low blood sugar and passing out and dying within minutes is much higher, and happens much quicker when a fever is present than when a person with T1D is not experiencing a fever. Every single time my son gets any kind of fever, even just a little "24 hour bug", he is at high risk of going low blood sugar at a much faster rate, and therefore passing out, and dyeing at a much faster rate. I have to keep 24 hour vigilance over him, every time he gets sick with a fever.
That makes sense, as a fever is taxing to keep up. Every degree extra is another ~10% increase in energy consumption, while appetite usually drops. This will mess up his blood sugar levels as his glycogen stores are freed up. As you say, check glucose levels every 2-4 hours and act accordingly. Also watch out for dehydration.
my grandmother has high blood pressure. will it affect her just as bad as well? i know this question sounds kinda stupid, but shes relatively healthy, despite being 75 and having high blood pressure.

This should be an alarming wake up call for adult onset type 2! Too many type 2 diabetics are simply over weight, over fed, and allergic to treadmills. The best medicine is what you limit on your plate, and what type of gym shoes you put on before you exercise.
My wife has Type 1 and we have all be hiding away in the house for the last 2 weeks. When ever I hear about the US health system and I am so glad that we have the NHS which means that if you take insulin ALL of your drugs are free. Long live the National Health Service. Every time my wife has had a DKA she has been taken in to the Royal Free Hospital put on a drip sometimes in intensive care looked after well and then sent home and beacuse it is free the only thing you have to consentrate on is getting better. She gets regular check ups with nurses, doctors and feet and eye specialists because these a problems that diabetics can have and it is all FREE for her. Yes we all pay and we all use it it is the same as insurance but through our taxes. Please note that just beacause we have the NHS does not stop people who want to go private paying or having insurance it just means it is an optional extra. Please note that the private hospitals are now working with the NHS in this crisis time.

I am a type 2 diabetic - its been 2 years since i took any medication to control my diabetes, how? i simply went on Keto diet and have not taken any carbs since than. Take heed people, this is a dietary illness no medication can solve this. It has a vicious cycle, You eat > take medication > You eat again > take more medication. If you have a fever because of an infection, it is mental to solve fever instead of the infection. Plus stay away from artificial sweeteners, they are modifying your gut microbes to make you fatter and making your immune system weaker. Instead, if you have to have, take raw honey as sweetener,

@@jesbsnrn True but in other western nations at least the corrupt establishments recognize the intelligence of providing healthcare for their citizens. Canada, UK, Germany etc don't have universal healthcare because they are altruistic socialists. They do it because their economies are better off with lower costs, healthier workers and people having disposable income instead of massive healthcare debts. Also they are better off in a situation of epidemic or in this case pandemic. It's quite likely Europe and Canada will get this under control long before the US and probably even keep their borders closed to Americans if they have virus contained and US does not.
Dan Supernova Not always the case. I know many psychologists and doctors that do charity work sometimes. The real issue here is the price gauging for medical supplies (face masks used to cost 50 cents, now it’s over 7$ after corona). The other big issue is costs to get a medical degree and price of land that hospitals are built in has skyrocketed too.
My grandpa’s health was well, his diabetes was under control and did exercise 2 a week & followed a healthy diet. Sadly, Covid destroyed him and took him. Please people, I beg you to say home. Don’t go out if you have diabetes or any other medical condition. 🥺
Thank you for the information. I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes just last June, and didn't realize why diabetics would be considered "high risk". I'm lucky enough to have plenty of supplies on hand and close proximity to a CVS and my physician, so I'm not worried about running out at this time.
Go on a Low Carb/Keto diet and Intermate Fasting. Watch videos from Dr. Berg and Dr Jason Fung. You won't have nothing to worry about. Your body will thank you.
@@LABallin247 I might check out those Dr. videos, thanks! My mom is also T2 diabetic--her body reacted horribly to a keto diet--it's not for everyone, and I will remain wary without my physician's approval. Low Carb, ok! :) Fasting isn't an option for me (and my physician even told me I need to eat every 2-3 hours, small servings and healthy food). I have problems with my body acting as though my BS is too low even if it's high (and I haven't even been in what is considered "normal range" since day 1 of being diagnosed just 9 months ago). There have also been occasions where my BS actually did drop too low. My BS and A1C has dropped significantly since that first day, but at my last Dr. visit, my insulin dose was upped again. I didn't even know I had diabetes--I went to the Dr. about a continuous pain in my leg and nothing else. My A1C was 11.5 and my BS was 440 that first night, when I was immediately put on insulin and told to check my BS 2x/day--now, my last A1C reading was 7.2, and my BS usually hovers between 140-150 (still too high on both, but still significant drops). It's going to take a while, but yes, healthier diet and exercise helps. Up until the shutdowns, I was going to the gym on my college's campus 2-3x/week this school year.
My mom has diabetes, and her work (educator at a CA state prison) still are requiring her (and other teachers) to show up for work and possibly interact with the inmates to give them homework packets (since obviously their classes are shutdown). I don't understand why at some prisons, they're releasing prisoners to protect them from getting & spreading COVID19, yet educators who don't really need to be there are still required and "essential" to show up.
Yeah, like others have mentioned here, this isn't really responsible journalism. I think it was JDRF who said that if your A1c is in the 7's (which in my opinion is still a little on the high side), you're not at much higher risk.
One of the biggest concerns for people with diabetes (higher chance for type 1) is DKA...which often results from illness even without elevated blood glucose.
DKA? So the people who know what that means probably already know the information that you're trying to convey. The information you're trying to convey it's probably only useful to people who DON'T know what this acronym means
DKA results from lack of basal. During illness, your basal needs quickly increase, so it can easily happen that you end up with DKA, because the amount of basal insulin you are used to take suddenly isn't enough. High blood sugar ain't the cause - that is only correlated. Lack of basal is the cause of DKA.
I really appreciated this video and the information given. My dear sister is type 1 and I have been worried about her. But she is very strict with her diet, and uses insulin to keep her sugars in check. So I found this quite comforting.
Wait, what? Does Canada use a different unit for blood sugar level measuring? In the UK we use mmol/l, and a normal blood sugar level is between 4.0 mmol/l and 9 mmol/l, so people talking about getting 300s is a bit concerning to me ;/
Good one just don't put to much pressure on her make and follow those arrangements as if they are every day routines don't talk about it just do it. Diabetics have enough to worry about hope she stays safe and sound
To all Type 2,..please make this the reason to leave all rice, macaroni, spaghetti, OMG that killer white potato, and anything with sugar to manage for 6 moths. You will be amazed as I am.🙏🙏🙏
I’m a diabetic and also have asthma and so does my 15 year old daughter so I am very afraid of this COVID19 virus! It has me frozen with fear! I pray to god that he protects me and my loved ones and also all the ppl here, stay safe and GOD BLESS YOU All 🙏🏻
Don't be you know that you have to take steps to protect yourself and daughter no one else is going to do it family can help but you have to make it happen
Caroline Nino Woods not the same! Unless you currently use regular and NPH. If you use Humalog, Novolog, Fiasp or something similar this is not the same. Please be careful, the Walmart insulin requires different dosing and people have died because they see it as a cheaper option but don’t know how to properly use it.
Definitely not the same insulins. When I was first diagnosed in 1985, the current $25 insulin was all that was available back then. So I was able to adjust my lifestyle and pump delivery methods to survive on Walmart insulin when I had no insurance. It can be done. But you MUST be properly educated how to deal with it.
Im diabetic patient from last 12 years. Like any other covid-19 also quickly catch the diabetic people. But here I suggest some tips that prevent you from covid-19. www.healthworld.live/2021/06/diabetes-and-covid-19-tips-to-stay.html
My wife's doctor told her that as long her type 2 diabetes is under control, which it is, she's at no greater risk to get Coronavirus. She said however that diabetics are, by definition, in less than ideal health which makes them at some additional risk to have a worse outcome from this virus. How much additional risk depends on the degree to which the diabetes is under control or not.
My daughter has type 1. Just like any illness, it makes managing diabetes a nightmare, but with Dex com and omni pod, it is possible. So just work extra hard to manage the diabetes during the illness. Do away with the underlying issue by keeping your blood sugar under control. Which honestly, people with type one should be doing anyways.
Type 2 especially puts a person at higher risk of infection and inflammation in general. It's a catch 22 in a way because your more likely to get worse reactions to most things that effect the body and when you get an infection or fever it then makes your blood sugar higher. Another thing especially with type two is that most people with it are older and being older alsoakes you more vulnerable so therefore there are two "underlying" issues.
@@justanotherday1205 he recovered completely , 8 months ago he was ill and locked in his room for two months and we’d wear masks and leave food trays and meds instructions, he also got vaccinated but even after two months of his recovery he couldn’t taste food for another two months but now he’s all good.
Not if they are doing something about it they may not and their families are helping out, if something happens did their families do enough, do shopping runs, pick up med for them while they social distancing from others
Im extremely worried right now for my Husbands health...I lost my Mother last Summer to COVID-19 and she was also a type 1 diabetic with a couple underlying issues....now my Husband has just been admitted to the Hospital due to lack of oxygen.
I am also type 1, apparently immunocompromised people are at risk, type 1 is auto immune, so our immune system is fine, only the high blood sugar may be a risk factor, we are not immunocompromised, in fact our immune system has overreacted
I had type 2 borderline Diabetes and have reversed it. But had a heart attack last June 2019 so am very scared of this virus. Keep your family indoors and stay locked down

aly marcoe Well wishes to your mom. It’s not just the diabetes that makes a person vulnerable, but those complications from diabetes being complicated more. Keep everyone away from her if possible. We are all in this fearful time together. Be strong. ✌️❤️🌎

My mother passed on December 20th from ARDS. She was a type 1 diabetic. I wonder if she may have contracted COVID-19. About a week after she passed I had a fever and a dry cough that lasted for a couple of weeks. I spent many days in the hospital with her while she was on a ventilator. I guess I will never really know at this point.
It's absolutely disgusting and should be a crime against humanity
@Tom Guadalupe welcome to America, where Americans say they'll do it but not do it
Not only did my insulin go up in price, I used to get a 3 month supply with copay.

Absolutely
I have type 2 diabetes, and my last A1C was 7.0, and my doctor is happy with this. I don't have any heart problems. I have a higher than normal blood pressure, but this and the diabetes are treated with medications. The bottom line is that I'm one of those persons who almost never becomes ill.

Matt Sezer you’re a dumbo
Today it is a manageable and by walking the tightrope of knowing what your blood sugars are tells you what to do. And how I know this? Friends of mine and family members have this. And to let you know I have lost one of my cousins to this disease, before this covid-19 disease.

My 70yo Dad has diabetes and high blood pressure, and Lowes is still scheduling him work.
For his sake and the sake of all other retail workers, please STAY HOME unless you absolutely, positively need to go to the store.

Had type 1 since I was six. For 23 years living with it, then received a kidney/pancreas transplant. But because of my anti-rejection meds are so strong, I’m taking insulin again. Even though I have a fully functioning pancreas. But since I am immunocompromised, I have to be careful. Ha1c is perfect, but I’m back on on insulin cause of my transplant meds
Quinton Johnson Not your fault! The prednisone and other meds keep your sugars up so you’ll just have to manage with insulin, etc. Best of luck and PLEASE stay inside and protect yourself ❤️

I should do this, but like you said, I am a teen...hehehe

So I have been taking care of and monitoring quite a few other people but I have not been thinking about myself. My Type II is not well maintained because basically I am an idiot when it comes to my own health. Guess it is time to wake up. Again, thanks for putting this video out there.
As a new T2 diabetic this was very helpful. Thank you
Do yourself a favor and look up ketogenic eating and/or visit the dietdoctor web site. It's reversible! I did it.
I have CIU but it's getting better. I'm really scared because it sometimes effect my lungs. I have been hearing loads of ambulance sirens these past days. I hope you all stay safe, stay clean, and stay calm. If you don't know what CIU, search it up.
Being a Type 2 diabetic this was very informative and helpful, thanks.

Take heed people, this is a dietary illness no medication can solve this. It has a vicious cycle, You eat > take medication > You eat again > take more medication. Rob Dan the corrupt rule this country , just like everywhere else.

At 4:30 doctor says "high blood sugar suppresses your immune system" and that's it. They are talking about chronically having Blood sugar over 200.
Yeah, ketoacidosis is nothing to be trifled with.

I've got type 2 and worried very much, I won't tell my wife about the risk for me since we can't do more than we're doing about it.
You can do more. You can reverse it. Watch Forks Over Knives.
@@staypositive950 yes, you're right, thanks.
More resistance when we get sick essentially
Type 2 especially puts a person at higher risk of infection and inflammation in general. It's a catch 22 in a way because your more likely to get worse reactions to most things that effect the body and when you get an infection or fever it then makes your blood sugar higher. Another thing especially with type two is that most people with it are older and being older alsoakes you more vulnerable so therefore there are two "underlying" issues.
