Im glad I didnt waste my time and wait for Spring to sow these outdoors. I have a great full Sun exposure all day long. Zone 5A ( Maritimes ) Thinking about what to do with these now.
I have stratified my seeds in the refrig in September. Can I now plant these seeds indoors to start them? At what temp - heat mat - grow liights if you have any ideas?
Is it possible to see the seeds green, that they are pollinated, and have pollination, or is it better to cut them to continue flowering until the end of the season? Thanks for the detailed tip about clematis seedlings
clematis seeds must be stratified before planting. Seed germination is iffy at best. You will not get 100% germination with Clematis from my experience. I have found it is easier to take your seeds and place them in a tray with potting mix and let it set outside all winter and in the spring you will see new seedlings popping out.
Thank you so much for this information. I always wondered if you could grow clematis from seed. Everyone said it was too hard and low success rate so I didn't buy any on line. :( Is there a good place to get seeds? I'm in Ontario Canada
the reason for low success rate with seeds is so many sellers are selling non fertilized Clematis seeds. I would say that only half of my clematis seeds get fertilized each year. I have received so many non-fertile seeds online. Its frustrating. They also have to cold stratified which many people dont know that either. If you buys seeds and just plant them, they wont germinate, at least 60 to 90 days in temperatures below 40F the better to activate them,
YOU ARE Going to have to stratify your seeds first for about 90 days. Since you dont have cold winters here like we do in the states, you will need to place you seeds in a plastic envelope and keep them in the refrigerator below 40F for about 90 days. Then soak them in water for 24 hours and plant :)
my Clematis had a beautiful blooming season this year, however i havent gotten many seeds yet this year, if and when i do i will post them on my website cashyourgreens.com just check there periodically,, thanks my friend,,
yes i had that happen as well. many growers of Clematis dont know the difference from fertilized seeds and non-fertilized seeds,, try to get a image of the seeds before you buy

yes,, 3 months is the length needed, Heat mat set at 70f
you dont need any lights to germinate, only after they have emerged and you have coteledons, use a heat mat set to 70
I live in NJ should I bring inside during winter or can it stay outside with snow. Should it be covered? Thank you.
clematis can tolerate cold weather and their seeds need to be stratified for germination, leave them all outside :)
Thank you so much!!
