  • This was a demo I did for the Wool & Fiber Arts group on Faceboook.
I was having fun with incorporating some of my scrap handspun yarns to make a tweed handspun yarn. I really love the idea of taking yarns that have memories imbued in them, and giving them new life. If you try this technique let me know how it goes for you!

Thanks for encouraging me to finish a project that has been lying right in front of me for a week. Now it’s done. Thanks again 😊

    Alana,
The ashford carders respond better if you don't hold on to the fiber as it feeds into the licker in. When you let it go it won't wrap around the small drum. Loved your ideas and artistic vision.

Usually with my Patrick Green one I don't hold onto them so that makes sense 😄

I like the leftovers and small yarn is best you put with small wool, together- thru a spinner which i used when i was weaving- and she make a wool fabric and make a “thing” or more specific- colors are best with me- so i save and recall someway

Just stumbled on your channel and love it - thank you for putting words to "Liz the crafter". Even with things in my life outside of crafting, I face this "perfectionism paralysis" where I think "it's not going to be perfect, so why even start?" so I'm sitting here staring at all my yarn and their corresponding knitting patterns while having abandoned so many projects. This WIP/Wish List idea is genius and I love it. Thank you for showing me that the imperfection and learning is the fun part and helping me relax so I can actually play and not take it too seriously.

Okay, that quilt is beautiful!! I had a similar idea! Also, on the scraps I try to keep my wool separated from everything else kinda like you do with yours. And the wool, along with other safe and natural fibers, I could possibly use for the birds. The rest I save until I come up with an idea for a project. But most often I will take the different wools that I have and incorporate it within itself for a project. I also use a lot of different silks and other fibers. This carder is excellent though. As I love combining different materials, colors, etc.

I've woven some great table runners using scrap yarn!

OoO!! I would love to see them and to see how you display them. I don't have a table that I could display them on, but I was considering making chair covers for my outdoor chair cushions. I just think it's so much fun to reuse yarns that have memories for us, it sort of is like going down memory lane :) If you're on Facebook, you should join my group "Spin, Dye, and Create with Alanna Wilcox" so we can all see the things you create!

This is spooky!. Today I bought the identical carder and began looking for instruction and inspiration and up pops your video and it's follow up. These small Ashford carders are currently costing $700 NZ and I found mine at sale price for $527. All I went to the shop to buy was a new pair of hand carders and I come out with a new toy..my beloved asked me whether it was a "need or want? " when we were putting it together. He knows me so well.
A friend gave me a collection of empty serger(overlocker)spools and the wool and bits I blended on a board then spun are wound on these spools and they sit on one of my sets of drawers. Now that I have this gorgeous little carder I am going to be needing lots and lots more cones....and I am also thinking of using rug canvas to stitch (not hook) the spun fibre and stretch it over a large art canvas to create a colorful wall display. As I am a total beginner at Spinning my yarns come out all thicknesses and tensions so they are perfect pieces of art yarn in my eyes. I did watch a video once where the spinner was laughing at herself for deliberately not trying to create a perfect yarn which went against her normal way of doing it. Now I am going to begin viewing the 2nd part of this fun tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing it. Also am subscribing and look forward to working through your videos.

What’s the spinning video called please? I can’t seem to find it. I’ve never done this but I do a lot of crafts and was trying to find out how to make and spin my own yarn, and came across this video. It looks so fun, but I really would like to see the spinning part 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Thanks!

This type of art yarn is a specialized niche. In the past few years RUclips has spurred tons of interest in spinning, and there are many channels focused on spinning, and how to start. Just do a search for spinning, and dive in!

You are doing well. I'd like to suggest that you practice not saying "um" . Respectfully submitted by an avid RUclips watcher.

My ADHD makes it hard for me to remember words sometimes and not stutter, especially when presenting something because I'm painfully aware of how frustrating it can be when a person is making a point and then they go off on a tangent and never address the initial thing they were trying to make a point about. Oh, and run-on sentences 😂
I practice things I know I have control over and can improve in ways that don't cause me anxiety to fixate on, like making art and teaching people to believe they are capable of being creative and making art too. 🎨 😁🫶🏻
