Agree. Our little Papillon cross had a partially collapsed trachea from pulling while in a collar from his former owner. A harness is all I used on him.
@@carolb3122imma be honest a harness with a handle for your tiny dog is ideal because not only is it safe for your dog due to their trachia but also allows you to keep them and other dogs safe unlike with larger dogs where it's more ideal to have control of the head, you could use a head halter instead in combo with a harness to better direct them if they pull.
My rambunctious rescue pup is doing well with leash walking, finally, with a head collar (Gentle Leader), along with treats and pets when she walks nicely. No prongs or trachea damage needed.
Front clip vs back clip harness. You were using videos with back clip harnesses. Front clip harnesses directly prevent a dog from pulling, it quite literally makes pulling not comfortable. Comfort in pulling does not cause reactivity. This is creating a false connection.
My dog pulls FAR more with a collar than with a harness with the leash attached to the front. That’s the key, since it turns him back toward me, and I stop walking as soon as he pulls, so he’s figured out it doesn’t get him far.
It all depends on each dog. Some service dogs, for example, will be harness trained, while others won't. You'll also see dogs like huskies harness trained when they actively participate in things like sled pulling or other such activities.
Totally agree with you on the harness- but the prong collar?I don't think so!Not a chance in hell that any animal of mine would wear one.Better training is the key I'd say. ..
Just got a prong collar about a week ago and my dog has been the best he’s ever been on walks . It doesn’t hurt him but makes it uncomfortable to pull . I’ve tried harnesses and can agree it makes it easier for them to pull you
Try teaching the dog what you want him to do, instead of forcing him to for his own comfort. It's inhumane. And I can assure you, if your dog pulls so much that you even feel the need to use a prong collar, then it WILL be hurting him.
Mine wears a harness and walks good plus when we are hiking up hill and say "go on" she pulls helping me up the hill. Which is awesome as I have chronic back pain. She will also come stand just above me when climbing over something so I can grab the handle to help me get up
My dog has a neck bigger than her head, so she can't wear a collar. Especially for training, so while i understand the point, it really depends on the dog, the temperament, what you will be using the harness for, etc.
As a man with six full grown Shepherds, I approve this message. Too many sods are absolutely daft when it comes to Harnesses, and just as many deny that harnesses contribute to the pulling. You don't see a Carter hooking his buggy to a collar, it's a Harness that's used. Same with Sledders, Protection and Military K9s.
Unless your dogs head just slips right out because they got a thick neck, our dog used to just slip out of her collar and leave, no problem whatsoever, we HAD to use a harness so she physically couldn't just slip out and run off
I think harnesses work excellent for small dog, my dog uses a harness and always has since she was a puppy, at that time she weighed 2 lbs now she weighs 11 lbs, still in a harness does great. My friend has a small dog she used to use a collar the little dog was always choking I told her to use a harness...which she did and no problems since My name is Carol and I approve this this message!! Anyone who used a prong color shouldn't be allowed to have a dog...or if they have a dog they need professional training not just for the dog but for them as well!! I'm starting a campaign against prong colors!!
Its a decent point, but harnesses are for dogs to do a job, sometimes the front clip harness works best, sometimes your dog is pulling something, say a sled or a wagon, regular harnesses are best for that purpose. The collar is the best option for short walks and potty breaks.
Yeah, non of the above worked on mine and I could not get a good grip to pull her back and down, so I do use a harness, but instead of just pulling the lease so she gets next to me I also grab the collar/neck part to pull her back and down, after a few time's she learned I had more controll that way and stopped pulling a lot (not completely, cats still get her going). What works for some does not work for all it all depends on the dog 😊
Leash train your dogs and you won’t even need a harness. Front lead harnesses have been proven to damage shoulders in dogs and don’t help with pulling. Harnesses are made for 1 thing, pulling. Just train your dogs people… it’s not hard.
I was teaching all of my dogs with a harness and not one of them is pulling, meanwhile I know several people that use collars and the dog still pulls. In the end, if you take your time and put some actuall effort in, you can teach the dog not to pull
@@zi6803 100%, hence the “just train your dogs comment.” You can use a harness if you so please, if it works for you, do it. But unless you train the dog itself to not pull on a leash, you won’t get anywhere. It’s just upsetting to see many ignorant people buying the “no pull” harnesses assuming it will “train their dogs.” Meanwhile multiple cases of dislocated shoulders are coming from them simply because the owners are lazy and don’t train the dogs. 🤷🏽♀️ Not to mention the force free trainers that encourages the bullshit LOL. Anyways, use the tools you want, just train the dog.
Right....but collars/slip leads have been proven to damage the windpipe in dogs that pull so they aren't any better, and front lead harnesses do limit pulling while as those things don't. No equipment is actually going to resolve a dog's pulling issue. Some things can help but only teaching loose leash walking and leash pressure will actually stop a dog from pulling.
My dog chokes himself out if he uses a collar so harness is the only way to entire he doesn’t choke and vomit on a walk… he doesn’t even have to pull that hard to get it started.
This only works with young dogs. A rescued dog over about 4 won't understand and will pull and pull until they cough or choak themselves out. Excessive pulling on a leash/lead can iritate and damage the trachea. If you have a middle or older aged dog that pulls try a gentle leader.
I just started walking my neighbor s husky. They don't walk him. He is going on 3 years old. He pulls beyond belief. He is choking w it. I made them get a harness he still pull. What should I do. They don't walk him enough so he is so confused when I walk him. Please help me with some advice. Anyone. I'll try anything. I want him to be happy walking not pulling. Thanx
So you are saying "I am unable to train my dog when he is comfortable, so I torture him to get what I want." Prong collars are banned in many countries and pretty much every well educated dog trainer uses harnesses.
Imy dog wears one of this leather collars that have a chain that gets tifhter to the size of the neck so when walking normal its soose and if he charches its a snug fit. But he also wears a harneszwit 2 bands so i can pick him up into aurprison if he does go totally out of control or if people are too afraid of him so i tell them i hold him secure and there is nothing to fear. He is with me since a month and his reactivity got a bit better but if he encounters multiple triggers he is simply to out of it and e need to carry him a few meters off the road to put him in sit to calm down. Thats why i like the harness it helps me carry him off to a better distance for training
Dogs are never the problem. If your dog is out of control YOU haven't trained them properly. Using pain and intimidation to control your dog is morally wrong. These animals are literally bred to serve us and, with correct training and positive reinforcement, will do anything you ask. But continue to abuse your dogs if you want, just know that when they bite you, it's your fault
My dog escapes all collars and most harnesses. We use a harness with an extra strap around the narrow part of her waist otherwise we'd lose her. Unfortunately, she was grown by the time we adopted her and had learned how fun getting chased is. It is the one habit I haven't been able to stop. Otherwise she is an awesome dog.
How come you never mention martingale collars? They work perfectly for this. I mean, if your suggesting a prong? (Which I have no issues with) But I’d try a Martingale first.
I think if you have a small dog that's well trained a harness can be used to pick them up in situations when you need to but the leash should be attached to the collar. I feel the same with gentle leaders it literally breaks their neck if they pull back your snapping their neck, and they can't open their mouth it is more abusive than a harness or prong collar. I like prong collars BTW only if there used correctly
Harnesses are essential for small dogs. Their trachea can collapse, especially when their older after years of being on a collar leash. This happened to my sister in laws dog, who rarely even pulled, it was devastating.
I agree to you, but only if you exclude very small dogs. The power difference between the human and those dogs is to big, so even a very light correction with a collar or an unfortunate situation, that can come up especially during training can injure those dogs severly. On the other side, most of those breeds are kind of dwarfed and therefore ill by default, so you shouldn't own them at all in first place...
Prongs, slip leads ect are absolutely not necessary and any trainer who suggests them don't know their trade. The info in the video is absolutely absurd and incorrect. As an AKC certified trainer/evaluator I don't approve this message.
There are situations where a harness is the best option, but I do agree not to use them day to day walking. I trained mine with a prong, I don't even put it on properly anymore, she knows when it's on to behave lol
You should start off first with the hornets but maybe after you train your dog with the harness you take off the leash to make sure they're actually used used to the other dog to make sure they don't attack the other dog or nothing
I just have personally never seen a single dog that behaves well with harness on. I do believe if you use it well then yes, it could be very beneficial but most of the case it’s just encouraging the bad behaviors of the dogs
@DrewIrish I definitely would never use a harness for a big dog. You have nearly no control with it, and it makes it way harder to handle the dog it can even get really dangerous. I have always a normal coller on my dog (livestock garden mix), and I use it when I'm just out in nature. He is normally of lesh anyway. If I go to a higher distance, please like the city. I use the prong collar. It makes communication way easier, and he responds really well.
And for the love of God do not use a gentle leader there's nothing gentle about them the first time your dog lunges full tilt at something it's gonna need a chiropractor at best at worse your dog's gonna snap its own neck. And to anyone who wants to argue first tie one end of the lead to sturdy object roughly 30-40% heavier then you then take the lead and out it on your head (not your neck) and give yourself full slack like you're in a nece heel. The run as fast as you can in any direction and se how it feels.
@willbutler2639 Well if you think a gentle leader is a proper way to train a dog you're wrong. And if they are only for use with a properly trained dog then why do they need to close off the dog's mouth like that??? They shouldn't be used on any dog even a properly trained dog will do better with a traditional collar. The point of a gentle leader is to stop them from pulling a task which it fails miserably at. You can say well, if that happens. It's not a properly trained dog all you want. But at the end of the day no one has a 100% control over their dogs actions. And you have to ask yourself what is gonna hurt them less when you dog inevitably behaves like a dog and does dog things. Or when you fuck up and give it a free command while it's still on. You're only human.
This makes absolutely no sense! You have way less control over a dog on a harness! I would definitely recommend a prong collar. And yes I have experience with aggressive dogs.
