Gotta do what ya gotta do!
But you still did it so it's forgiven 🙃
its ok ..ive watched it twice now... haha
Manny, great video as usual.
Just a minor comment.. The 11 aperture blades do not "produce" smooth bokeh. The main purpose of the 11 blades is to MAINTAIN circular bokeh highlights when the lens is stopped down. Wide open, the bokeh highlights should be circular, whether the lens has 11, 9, 7 or whatever number of aperture blades. The lemon shape bokeh is due to mechanical vignetting. The 85mm GM has lower mechanical vignetting, that's why it renders rounder bokeh balls.
Cheers!
I shoot fashion and beauty and I'm by no means a super professional, big name photographer but I have been using a 24-70 and 70-200 for about 2 years now and I've started to move to primes. I use my 55mm 1.4 Zeiss for probably 70% of my compositions, my 24mm GM for those rare occasions where I need to compose wide and I just recently started looking at 85, 100 and 135 lenses to replace my 70-200 but I've quickly found out that since my main lens is a 55mm, the 85mm focal length doesn't really offer anything special compared to the 55mm and I'm not really getting that much closer with it either so for me it was a fight between either the 105mm Sigma or the 135mm GM!
I have just decided I will order the 135mm GM because I really don't like how Sigma makes things in the image look... It's hard to explain, it's like I would focus on the model but then everything around the model would be one dimensional and flat, like you couldn't tell how far stuff was from each other, like for example, if you had two cars one behind another, they would literally just look like you glued two car stickers on top of each other, whereas when I tried the 135mm GM, it would make everything look 3D, just like my 55mm Zeiss Otus does and I LOVE THAT kind of look because it reminds me of those old film and cinema lenses! Plus it looks more realistic because it's not just a flat image and for fashion and beauty shots that's SUUUPER useful and makes the model stand out from the environment even at f8, f11 or f16!
And the 135mm focal length is MUCH BETTER for head, head n shoulder, waist up, close up and detail beauty shots, since I use 55mm for basically everything else!
If I have to choose one lens from these and the price is gonna be almost similar.
I will go for Sony 85 G master, because it will be lot more versatile indoors because of shorter focal length.
And f1.4 will work pretty fine in low light.
I love how you say 1-2-3 out-loud when you take a photo - I always do that, although backwards, 3-2-1. Anyway, just dropped by to say hi and thank you for your guest appearance in mine!
Don't think one of them can replace the other. I'd use them both for their different ranges. With my current Nikon setup I'm switching between my 35, 85/105 and 70-200 during weddings, depending on the situation. If I switch over to Sony, which I probably will eventually, I think the 35, 85 and 135 GM will be the trio I'll carry. No need for a 70-200 when there's access to such a stellar 135. If I need the 200mm range, APS-C crop mode on the prime will probably be as good as the physical 200 on the zoom.
did you happen to make this switch or will soon?
Dat compression with the 135 😍
Dude I get so pumped for your videos every week keep up the good work😊👍
End part was the best. Your wife always makes your video that much more comical and fun to watch. My dream is to be a successful photographer/videographer as you.
That intro is everything
I see you up'd the production value. Keep dropping the great content bro. Respect
because of you, today I bought 85mm 1.4GM, I can't wait.
To put a full synthetic oil is the best you can do to your engine 😀 You probably meant semi synthetic 10w40
About to buy my first Len for My Sony A7lll ...I so confused which one should I get : Sony 135 or Sony 85 1.4 .I shoot portraits
4 years after and someone is struggling with the same question. Can you give me an answer? lol
Man! The 135 is a beast. I love the idea of getting a Sigma lens but generally speaking they are so loud compared to these native lenses. Totally agree with you on the pricing.
Loud?? What! I have the 20, 35 & the 135 native Sigma Art for Sony e and they are all totally quick and silent!
@@fotomats8651 Congrats man. To answer you question though, yes. Vast majority of the Sigma lens I have come across and reviews I have seen, the auto focus is loud. So loud you can her it in post at times.... Why are you yelling though? You alright man?
@@anthonyblodgett2227 Sorry, but video work don´t bother´s me... For Photography they are all totally silent! cya
@@fotomats8651 No need to apologize. We are just talking man. Best wish. Have a good one.
@@anthonyblodgett2227 we probably misunderstood... likewise
Wow, actually I do not consider bokeh very pleasant. I was expecting same oomph as 135 Zeiss Sonnar, but that sir, did not happen at all.
Manny, you are right, 85GM is much nicer in the bokeh department and I am definitely keepin' it !
What is the difference between this lens and Sony 20mm 1.8
great review ..showing us the result of pictures ... keep going bro 😍😍😍
Dunno whats sharper...The lens...Or your shape up
I think the 105 is the best. no distortion like an 85 but you dont have to back up far as hell for full body.
I've GM135 , Sigma 85DG DN 1.4, Sony 90 2.8 Macro G lenses.i have to sell one of them at least.i just can't decide.help me please.
Get the 24 GM and keep what you have
Your content is so intuitive, thank you 🙏 I always look forward for new videos
Great review. 3 years later still no Ned 135mm from canon, wonder how much that would cost
good channel as always, not too serious, light humor, simple facts
Diana rocks! LOL Thanks for the vid Manny! I think you're right, the 70-200 is excellent for portraits and it's a more versatile lens. In your opinion, do you think it would be beneficial to get the 85mm 1.4, or just stick with my 70-200?
You and Diana are adoreable. Love the closing scene.
And I am still keeping my Batis 135 f/2.8. Thanks for another informative vid. You inspire me.
Good video Manny. You and Brandon Cole are by far the best photographers on RUclips. You guys should do a collab. That would shut down RUclips. Similar styles
I loved how at the end when Diane came in to say goodbye, when she left you watched her butt all the way out the door :P My man!
2:00 You realize that wide open, the aperture blades have NOTHING to do with the football (more commonly "cat's eye") bokeh balls?? It's caused by optical vignetting. The aperture blades are fully recessed wide open.
So is it possible at any number over 1.8 the bokeh may be circular?
@@jamesmbryant6349 I tested in Liveview my Sigma 85/1.4A with a bokeh ball right at the corner becomes circular at f2. With my Sigma 135/1.8A, it's f3.2. With my Nikon 105/1.4E it's f8!
sandb very good info!!
I was going to comment on that. Football bokeh is caused not by the aperture blades but by the shape of the front element and the plastic around it when the light doesn't hit it straight up. You can visualize it by holding the lens front facing you, then tilting it up or down. What is a circle from the front becomes more football shaped as you tilt it. And that's why the bokeh looks like that. It's the same thing with my Samyang 135mm as well. The 11 circular aperture blades allow the bokeh to stay round as you stop down, instead of taking, say, a hexagonal shape. An other experience you can make for the shape of the bokeh is to cut a hole in a piece of black cardboard. The bokeh will take the shape of the hole. So if you shape it like a star, your bokeh balls will turn into stars.
This is correct, here is a demo of why it happens:

Aperture blades have an affect when changing aperture :)
Great videos Manny. I like you style a lot. Fun, full of insight and no bullshit. Just the things I like to see and hear. Yeah!
Why did it blur out @3:52 ?
Possibilities are endless
It’s his dick
5:18 again
I was about to buy the sigma 135 but now i will have to pre order the GM.
Just curious why you don't upload in 4k? No disrespect intended; your work is awesome, just wish I could appreciate your direct sharpness comparisons on a 4k screen. Hard to get a feel for a comparison of something shot at super high res when the comparisons are presented in 1080 :(
Great video as always , but am more tempted to get the Sigma 105
Your wife cracks me up. Another good vid. Thanks.
oh cool. knew the model at 1:55 looked familiar. saw her at another Sony event in NYC too.
Great video. A number of blank spots for some reason. Not sure if your new format works, but the content is still rock solid.
ok that B Roll intro was sick 😋
INTRO IS FYYYYY-YUUURRR
censored? or forgot to add spec text? whats with that blur? Manny whats going on man xD
Sold! Look forward to more samples!
Greetings from Vietnam. You are like the Kanye West of photography. You're my inspiration.
I don't know why press tech stresses so much on those aperture blades.
If you shoot wide open they should be perfectly stowed away and will not influence the bokeh.
The light shape is just a factor of the front element cutting on out of focus zones
Couple goals.
Can't wait to get back to photography I'm so anxious 🙏🏾
Hello from Germany :) ..I Love your Videos ... I Love your LR Presets .. thank you..
Ending was soooo sweet ❤️
Reupload? Relike!
Thank you for this review Manny! 🤘🏽
Great information as always, Manny I love my 85 but I'm still discovering it's full potential I've been using my 85 mm for about 3 months, ive been watching a lot of your videos to help give me some ideas as to what my next lens should be, Im Only 1 year and a half years in ( new guy ) any suggestions as to what my next leans should be as a all around type of leans?
Hehehe do a video with this Sony 135mm GM and the A7r4!
Ohh yes!!!
that intro could be a sick, sick ad for the makers of this lens, man. good job 👌
I believe we will soon see a new 85mm f1.4 GMaster Mark ii with the quad XD motor system. The speed and reduced focusing noise will really put it above the competition. I love my 85 f1.4, but low light focusing can be a tad frustrating.
Id love to have it, both because its a sharper lens and! Newer lens motor adjustment.
But inside I haven’t the studio room length literally. So for that i have to stay with my 85gm
Manny love your work mate , so honest :)
Finally Sony has released its 135mm/f.18... Hopefully it will be priced at a more affordable range, although I am not going to buy it in the near future.... Nice comparison with the Sigma 135mm/f1.8 btw, Manny...
Heard it will be £1900
Time to trade in my SAL135f18Z! Nice video Manny!
I like the end when the wifey comes in. Real life! 😊
1st, click on video, 2nd, hit that like button before watching, 3rd Sit back and enjoy the mad knowledge 🙌🏽😅🔥🔥🔥📸🎥
What happened to the video? why is it blured??
Girl was underage
Honestly, I can't afford either of the two so I will buy the Sony FE 1.8 85 mm. Sony should release more G series lens for enthusiasts. We need more mid range glass for Sony.
Brooklyn here!
I have a 135mm lens that has perfect soap bubble bokeh, which had cost me only $30. Yes, it's a manual focusing lens. And yes it's over 40 years old. An Olympus OM Auto-T 135mm f3,5...
L
Awesome video! Can't wait for the full review!
Thanks for the great video! :)
good work as usual
Hi, I'm Ivonne, thanks for your videos, I'm a beginner in photography, could you tell me what high-quality polarized filter I can buy for my Sony 35 mm 1.4 GM lens. Thank you for your advice.
I think you did a great job on the analysis - I think you're right about the price points and the reasons why the Sony is a perfect match for...Sony. As for the football shaped bokeh balls - can you tell us if this is a factor of just...physics or is this something that eventually lens manufacturers will be able to fix? What I mean is - do bokeh balls just naturally get that shape when they are off to the edges or is there something in the manufacture that contributes to this?
That censorship tho..
LikeLupin3rd yeah what’s up with that?
He’s a cop. And Sony threatened him. He didn’t want any beef with them so he folded. He’s a family man. No shame in doing what’s best for them
Sick video man - Thank you Sir.
Dope ass location!! For some reason, this 135mm lens has been all over my feed. It's like it's calling me! lol great video as always! My only question would be the distance from the model and just communicating w her and how would this be at a wedding?
I think your wife’s picture is at the Sony display counter at my local Best Buy in Southern California. Man she’s pretty!
You will get cat's eye bokeh at f1.8 in the corners as your aperture doesn't come into play wide open. The corners are still getting clipped by the lens barrel . You have to stop down 1 or 2 stops to get the circular bokeh.
Awesome piece of glass!
How are you Manny. I have Sony 70-200mm 2.8 i’m thinking about purchasing Sony‘s 135mm 1.8, I do event photography and portraits so do you think it’s worth picking up Sony’s 135 mm 1.8.
I see why you like the "Manuel Focus" in that lens. 🤗
On the concrete? the bag is right there?!?! lol. That hurts my heart lol.
right
After comparing a lot of Sony vs Sigmas the Sony just performs so much better. For the most part they are faster, sharper and better build. Sigma is good but not Sony level.
The football shape bokeh “balls” is not really due to the amount of aperture blades, because most lenses will render round balls in the center of the frame. The football shape is due to vignetting and gives rise to a more swirly bokeh that some people like.
I think the Sony 135 has less vignetting than the Sigma. The Sony 85 GM is almost unique in this department.
Manny talking about engine oils now? So what grade should I put in my high performance engine? Haha i kid, love your stuff.
Great Video, thanks a lot!
I purchase the Sigma 135mm f1.8 Art and used it a few time and trust me it’s a fantastic lens and super sharp hard to beat the price, now I believe in using native lens for my Sony’s a7iii but I’m going to sell my Sigma 135 f1.8 Art and put it to Sony FE 70-200mm f2.8 GM I don’t see a need for a 135 lens not even a Sony 135 GM...
I own 3 lens Sony FE 50mm f1.8 (nifty 50) great lens and under rated..
Sony FE 85mm f1.4 GM (what a dream lens)
Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM
Yes they are expensive but you serious about photography and want the best of the best that’s the way to go..
Ps.working on my Sony FE 70-200mm f1.8 GM
Yasssss! Love this Manny!
the sigma 135mm 1.8 art for e-mount ist also much sharper than 85mm gm. thanks for your review.
Weird black out moments @ 4:21 manny
what happend 3:58?
Thanks for the comparison with the 85, it's great to see the difference. Now, considering the weight difference is 180g, while not negligible, strictly speaking not a deal breaker - if going strictly about image quality - where, if at all, it has leg up on the sigma 135 ? I did view both of your videos and there doesn't seem to be a significant difference, but i might have missed something. Now, considering AF, how much worse would you consider sigmas af to be?
Hey Manny any tension or bad blood from Sony since you left the program?
Is this ideal for sports in any way?
Great intro. Do more of this. Was the intro shot on the 135mm 1.8?
Thank you sir Mamallapuram SunLight Studio Balu
wow very nice lent, sorry for my request, but is it possibile to see a raw of the sony and one of the sigma?
what is your opinion Manny Ortiz, compared to sony 135mm f1 8 za sonnar t* carl zeiss ????
Hi Manny , I am tempted to get / try out a Sony , what do you use and what did you use for this test . I am drawn to the A73 because of the smaller files , but i would like your opinion as I can not afford to waste money from my pension . Thanks and keep the good work .
Manny - This might be a dumb question, but do you set white balance before each shoot, or do you run with auto and correct in post?
Please help, in my lens when I turn it up and down it feels like something inside is loose, is that normal?
Damn that third model is gorgeous
I can't believe it.....
I just found this lens Sitting in a camera shop, So I snatched it up
Thanks, bro I almost bought the 85mm and so glad I didn't after watching this
regards, Rick
I want to get it too instead of 85mm but not sure if long distance will be a real issue or not. Or if using 135mm is just like 16mm that requires a special skill. Any advice appreciated!
@@elias38
it has a special purpose IMO
I love it and I use it for video also
You will need to be about 20 feet away from your subject to get full body shots but the compression and Bokeh are the best I've rever seen.
No special skill
Just stand further away and put your subject between you and the background for the most blur
That intro sequence was hot you definitely need an intro for your videos Manny
The oil thing I think you got backwards lol they have synthetic 1030w lol it's just a thicker oil better for warmer weather in winter not so much as it's a thick oil but understand where you going, it's like synthetic vs regular non synthetic oil lol 👌😊 but other then sweet video
I thought you would be more hyped about this lens to be honest. I thought you loved this focal length, I remember you talking about the Samyang with high praise back I the day. You seems less excited by the adapted sigma, native sigma and gm 135s in comparison.
