- If you guys have any questions drop them in the comments below! So far I really like this G-Shock, but there's two problems.

It's great to see Casio bring this G-Shock back to the basic standalone functions that make their watches great: Multiband 6, Tough Solar, and Mud Resist. These are the triumvirate next-level features that justify the steep $380 retail price.
This is a buy once cry once watch. I'm confident it will last until its calendar runs out in the year A.D. 2100. It will stand up to the rigors of Blue Collar work or extreme sports -- especially the nasty and dirty ones.
The Mudman does all the basic watch functions plus displays readings for altimiter, barometer, and compass. It does this WITHOUT BLUETOOTH!
Revolutionary for the G-Shock lineup, the Mudman proudly displays LARGE NUMBERS on its LCD screen.
But speaking of the display, here is the problem: at certain angles the screen looks dim and at night the reaading can totally disappear. And I'm talking about the positive LCD display. If you care about legibility DO NOT BUY THE NEGATIVE LCD Mudman!!!!!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The steel pointer pen I use is the Zebra F-701, which costs a bit more than a typical pen but it's money well spent in my opinion. It won't break and you can buy replacement ink cartridges. Just don't lose it!

Thank you so much for calling out the problems with Casio's negative displays. They have gone absolutely nuts with negative displays for some reason.
It’s like just when you think they got it out of their system here comes a new $2000 carbon fiber square… with a negative display.
@@JimKinkade STN negative displays aren't that bad when you compare them to the normal ones.
They suck
What a great review, just subscribed on the spot, the bit of your review that resounded with me was where you said not having a watch that needed to be linked with your phone that was linked to your life. That's what I want an easy to read watch I didn't have to link to anything & the basic ABC functions, the negetitive display never bothered me as I just moved my wrist till I could see it, I'm wearing it now & as a landscape gardener the solar function will get pleanty of use, well done.
Bro said "thiiiccckkk" like it was ass. 😄 Thanks for the review, getting this watch!
This watch was automatically going to be a part of my collection when Gshock dropped the video for it on their channel. I've got the green 9400 with the negative face, but this time I'm going with the positive display. The king Gshock is a massive watch, I only wear it during the warmer months because of the size, and in a bulkier case makes it uncomfortable when I wear multiple layers during the colder months. I like how casio put the Pro Trek Pathfinder compass feature in this model. Both of my Pro Treks are the most accurate out all my A.B.C watches.
The King is a short sleeved watch for sure! I hope you enjoy the Mudman!
Jim, great review. I am waiting to get mine today.
From what i have seen i really do not see it dull, but i will let you know tomorrow once i get it this afternoon.
Thanks Jim.
Great! Since I've worn it more I've gotten used to the glare. It's a real tough watch. I hope you enjoy it. Let me know!
What is the verdict?
Awesome voice and video! Btw, what is the name of your 5 stars watch?
The other watch is the GBD-H2000. I gave it 4.2 stars in my review of it but I rounded up to 5 because I like it.
Thanks for the review dude. Appreciate the tangential annecdotes.
Thank you, sir! I can't stop the tangents!
Thank you for providing such a detailed video! It's fascinating to see advancements like MIP technology. Hopefully, in the future, we'll witness the emergence of large displays incorporating solar and atomic time, all without the need for Bluetooth.
That’s my dream!
Subscribed. Thanks for the detailed review!
I appreciate it!
Could be my favorite review of all time. With over age 50 eyes, I'm going to roll the dice with the display, large numbers seem perfect. Merica.
Thank you, sir! The Mudman has large digits! It’s so much better than the tiny digits on most G-Shocks. Let me know what you think. 🇺🇸
I was planning on getting this watch to serve as my one and done digital watch, but after I saw your hiking video, I was very disappointed by the legibility.
The irony is that I had completely ignored the GBD-H2000 and had no idea what it's actually capable of.
However, I've just ordered one and I'm interested to see if it's any good for me.
I technically wanted a solar + atomic digital watch, but I don't mind watches with rechargeable batteries, as long as the battery life is solid.
The legibility on the H2000 is terrific with its MIP display. It doesn’t have atomic but you can synch the time with GPS.
I will say this about the GW-9500: the naked eye can cut through the reflections better than the camera. So it’s not as quite as bad as the video makes it out to be.
Great review. I like it becouse you use this watch as it sould be used. Maybe you can make another one after two or three months of use? Greets from PL
Yes, sir. I will update the review in due time. While wearing at work for the last couple of days, I already like it more. Thanks for the comment!
I totally agree with you on those black displays, I hate them
I don’t know how they get the green light to leave the Casio factory.
Im not a big fan of casio negative displays either and much prefer positive or MIP but i have been really been surprised with the display on my GX-56SL-4 King. It’s definitely not as legible as a positive but I’m never unable to see the time. It’s a beast on my 6.75” wrist but it’s my preferred work watch because i know it can take a lickin and keep on tickin.
Hi Jim, thanks so much for your detailed review and awesome vid. Good to know about the glare, visibility and wings issue on this G-shock GW-9500! I remove wings (if they are separate parts) or cut them off some bands if they are integrated in to the band. On Pro Treks like yours, I remove the wings and the bands and use a 22mm NATO or ZULU type strap. Single pass straps are my preference, with less material, more comfortable/streamlined, plus you can get them in multiple styles, colors and lengths for larger wrists. Not sure how the single pass affects the break-a-way tolerances when working with rotating equipment, you might need to perforate it to create an artificial failure point? Might consider that with the Casio band as well? Be safe man!
Thank you, sir! That ProTrek would be a really great hiking watch with a Nato strap. I'll try that out.
Seiko once had really heavy duty quartz divers... Never seen thicker push pins, thick glass, 30 years of bikeing, diveing, underwater work, direct impact on concrete, wall, never broke... First service was 2 years ago
They don't make them like that anymore, huh?
Great review.
1) Is it possible to use a Nato strap on the GW9500 [ I have a Protrek 3510, similar to your Protrek 3500, and i ran nato strap through it without using a Nato strap adapter] ?
2) Do I need to use a Nato strap adapter for the GW9500?
3) Is there a Nato Strap adapter for the GW9500?
You like them nato straps, huh? Right off the bat I'm going to say:
1. You cannot run a nato strap like you can on the ProTrek. The Mudman has one large center lug rather than two lugs on the side.
2. Yes, you'd need an adapter.
3. I have not seen an adapter.
I'll research this to find a more definitive answer. (maybe there's an option I don't know about.) I just wanted to get this info to you quickly but it may not be 100% accurate.
@@JimKinkade Thank you for the info.
YES negative displays are a scourge that needs to die. Even the MIP displays that are an improvement still suck compared to positive displays.
Whats the point of having a watch that's difficult to read even under the best circumstances? Style? NO thanks I prefer to be able to read the time
I was surprised to see the negative LCD option on the Mudman. I hope it’s the last time Casio makes that mistake.
Hi there and thanks for the great video! I've bought the new GW-9500-3 Mudman to compare it to my beloved GW-9400-3 (both green, negative display). I must admit, though: The new 9500 is indeed more readable than the old 9400 at almost any angle despite the duplex LCD, at least for me it is! I have discovered a strange phenomenon on my G-Shocks I owned so far and would like to know if you or someone else could help me. Being in a place without radio connection I mostly rely on manually correcting the time.
Now, over the years I have observed something I haven't read about anywhere (and another channel only had a general info about different factors causing quartz crystal irregularities that affect accuracy, another one has not replied to my comment): The accuracy of an individual watch seems to vary! E.g. the 9400 I have has been CONSISTENTLY off about +2 secs per month after the last atomic correction by radio 7 months ago, now I manually set it, and it will be around 1 sec slow per month! That is not the only G-Shock I have observed behaving like this, temperature or mechanical reasons are definitely not the cause. Now my question is, what could cause it? I have tried varying the length of pressing the button that resets the seconds, but it has not made a difference.
Do you or anyone else have a clue about what's going on? It would also help me decide which of the two watches I will keep (the 9500 going even a little slower still after several setting attempts). Thanks very much and God bless (I agree wholeheartedly on your frequent quote of John 14:6)!
That's a really good question. You're saying that the watches gain or lose time at a different rate based on how it was initially set? Someone here may know that answer so I'll ask it in an upcoming video. I'm planning to test the accuracy of multi band 6 compared to bluetooth and manually setting the watch.
@@JimKinkade Thank your for your answer. I cooled down only the 9500 for a couple of hours in the fridge and then set both watches via the app Wave Sync Pro that simulates the radio calibration signals in remote areas. Yet so far I am unable to reproduce my findings. The latest results will most probably remain unchanged (9400 will fall back 1 sec/month, the 9500 about 3-4). But again, for the 9400 that is definitely a difference compared to the long previous period. I can't think of any other way right now to cause this...
nice review keep it up
Just picked up the last Rangeman Japanese domestic model on Amazon yesterday, this new model is nice but I wish the font on the Mudnan was thicker and darker plus there’s a lot of unused space on the dial
I know! I agree. Did you get the yellow Rangeman with the carbon band?
I got the black and red Rangeman with the carbon band, would’ve been nice if they put in a newer module with the MIP but oh well…that’ll happen when my girls head into high school in 10+ years lol
Working in Japan I’m seeing lots of G Shock watches and stores devoted just to G Shock watches alone which is great. What I haven’t seen is much Pro Trek watches. I think they are going to slowly drop them or limit their new models. This 9500 watch has all the best features of a Pro Trek in a G Shock watch style. The Pro Trek watches I think are looking dated such as the PAG 240 which at one time was pretty great looking.
That’s a really good observation and deserves an entire video for this discussion! The Mudman competes directly against the protreks!
@@JimKinkade I will add that G Shock watches are cheaper in the U.S. too in most cases. They do have rare models though, that are all but impossible to find in the U.S. market since the pandemic.
Thanks for your review. I bought this watch as I really liked the simple display and big numbers. I thought it would be easy to read whilst on the go. I had to return it as the contract is very poor. My cheap £30 Casio AE1500 is far superior. I’m now looking at the new Protrek PRW35 with STN LCD and all the features of the Mudman. Thanks again.
Sorry the Mudman didn't work out for you! The PRW-35 looks like a great watch. Let me know what you think.
Hi Jim, I am a UK viewer of this video, which is very informative and helpful. I have had several Casios over the years, and sold all of them except the GWG-1000.I have never had a negative display! What purpose do they serve? I also think that the Casio engineers just want to show how clever they are, rather than give customers what they really want. Would you recommend the GW-9500 above the GWG-1000? Many thanks. Terry Davis.
No! Keep the GWG-1000. It’s a highly regarded Watch and has sapphire glass. The only advantage of the Mudman is that it’s thinner.
The negative LCD displays look cooler. So I think it has more to do with fashion than practicality.
Thanks for watching from the UK!
Hi Jim, thanks for your quick reply and helpful comments. Keep up the good work. Terry Davis
Your GWG-1000 has a negative LCD display....that's why you can't read it.
@@adamski101 What's the point of any display if you can't read it?
I have the positive display one of these and its a great watch - the legibility on it is weird though - in some lights its the most legible Casio I own i.e bright sunlight and in some lights its the worst as it depends on how I tilt my wrist to read the time.
Got used to it now and love it but I know that a lot of people are having major legibility issues with the negative display version.
Then again, apart from the new Rangeman H1000, I have always had legibility issues with Casio negative display watches and won't buy one.
Thanks Jim. I completely agree with you regards the GW-9500 display. I've now returned mine to G-Shock UK for a refund having been so disappointed with the poor contrast. Earlier this year I bought the GW-9400Y which has absolutely superb contrast levels (I read somewhere that Casio upgraded the 9400Y display for its release). It's also a fantastic looking work watch in black / yellow.
Sorry you had to return the Mudman, Alan, but I understand. I decided to just deal with the screen issues. However, I’m going to look into that yellow rangeman.
User interesting comparison with the Rangeman GW-9400Y, which I am also interested in.
Is it just the Y model that has the upgraded display? Or do the other colourways have the same upgrade?
Finally a ProTrek PRG-340-3 style Dual LCD!!!! for a MudMan for the compass, Baro and Alti complications. Basically the same guts..The Toyota version GW-9500TLC-1 $440.00 is cool. They teamed up with Toyota Land Cruiser and Auto Body..GREAT REVIEW.
The Mudman is better than people are giving it credit for!
@@JimKinkade you’re right brother
I love small precise design watches and digits and G-shocks ARE huge and Casio please, please make a line of g-shocks which are sized for regular size wrists, please. This guy has a big wrist, and the watch still looks huge.
There’s a slew of more diminutive G-Shocks coming out now. I’m going to test some of them out.
@JimKinkade Interesting, I've been waiting for years now. Please do, possibly something with the 3ple sensor.
I always loved them, but it is just awkward to wear a big brick-like apparatus in day to day life. As you said, especially when you know regular casio are also though enough.
Thanks
Onest review! Great Job! I was never a fan of dual layer display (ProTrek have some.....).
Thank you, sir. The dual layer seems like a good idea until you try and read it.
I had protrek 2000 with positive display and had absolutely no problems with reading. I tried this new mudman in shop and negative display is really bad ( at least in artificial light with many reflections). Weirdly even positive display is not that great. Seems worse than in old Protrek. A shame - i realy like this watch in every other aspect
Yes i have the orange Version and the Display is very difficult to read. it is very dark. 😢
That's the problem with those negative LCD displays. They look good but they are really hard to read. I don't know why Casio keeps making them.
11:15 They actually made the G-Shock version of the Protrek back in 2013 with the GW-9400 RANGEMAN
What you say is true based on the functionality. But I’m taking about how Casio straight up took the ProTrek analog module from their ProTrek and stuck it in the Mudmaster. The Mudman module is from the PRW-35. I think the rangeman module is unique.
What would you consider the durability of this watch? Looking to get a good one for my son for his Basic Training graduation.
Congratulations to your son! I consider the the Mudman to be super durable and I wear mine to work in the oilfield. It would be my choice to wear on a combat mission.
I can’t quite tell but I think that its four stopper buttons would thwart the possibility of putting a standard Casio wire guard over it?
I don’t think you could get the wire bumpers on it but I haven’t tried.
Screens need a MIP - especially the negative display ones.
Shame
True. The MIP looks really sharp. But I don't think the solar charging can keep up with it.
Put a single pass nylon Nato or a regular two piece nylon strap on your PRW-3500-1CR, that will take care of the hair grabbing, and try the same on the gw - 9500 Mudman.
I'd try the nato on the PRW-3500. But the Mudman is my work watch and I hesitant to wear a nato around rotating machinery.
Or for someone talking for an hour at his desk over a watch...That simply just looks cool. I don't fkn need it for its functions...Just wanna look like a cool terminator dude
The Mudman is genuinely tough and tough looking! I haven’t looks tested it in the office because I’m not really allowed in there.
Just got the green one with the negative dial. Dial is not the best in terms of legibility. But the watch’s other functions are great! I love it.
This is my first “non-classic” G-Shock. I used to stick to the DW models - 5600, 6600 and 6900. Basic ones.
Nice. Congratulations on your new watch. I agree the visibility is frustrating but I love the durability.
@@JimKinkade Your videos helped me with the decision and you made me consider the positive display. For me, the green looks cooler. So, it all went down to a coin toss between the two.
I had a mudman , I had good luck with it for about a year , it was the carbon with the plastic back and it started foging up after coming on from the cold or it got wet
LMAO
Wife: "Where did that watch bag come from.."
Jim: "Some how it got on my order.."
I thought I clicked NO when it asked if I wanted a bag.
@@JimKinkade 😂 I’ve done that with my ford F350 fx4 diesel dually truck restore parts. And I’ve forgot to click no as well. 😂
My protrek does all of that
The Mudman is a ProTrek in a G-Shock body.
Casio has some odd deal where they know what is a home run yet they refuse to apply the new great screens used for the GBD200 move variant yet they won't use it for other models like this one. Casio makes everyone wait several variants until they eventually come around to finally giving the buyers what they want. They do this in a few different models unfortunately.
yea, that drives me crazy! The perfect G-Shock is always right around the corner.
@@JimKinkade , for the most part Casio wise I'm a mudmaster 1k 2k guy along with the only screened Casio being my rangeman GPS which is a brick. Unironically I prefer automatic divers but when the jobs or fun times are rough & tumble then it's Casio all the way. Funny I watched your video , saw the screen issues & somehow " by accident " 😉 ended up pulling the trigger on that black & yellow Japanese market rangeman 9400YJ-1JF soooo i guess thanks pffft lol hehehe but that screen clarity is pretty damn awesome.
Great video. But I believe you're barometer needs calibrated.
It seems like it always needs a calibration!
It's really unacceptable for this price that it has a dim display. I want them to go back to Pro Trek's compass for easier reading. Might be happening for the next wave of these watches after all the complaints.
That would be good. It would be nice to get an easy to read GShock.
Are the wings pulling hair in this model?
For me, yes, the wings pull my hair when I adjust the watch. If you want one that doesn't pull your hairs, look at the GBD-H2000.
It look like Pro Track
You are astute. It is a ProTrek in a G-Shock body.
cool review
Thank you, sir. I hope I didn’t go off on too many tangents.
@@JimKinkade tangents are the best
Bro, the king isn’t that hard to read compared to the rangeman 9400 negative display. That is the worst visibility on a watch I’ve ever seen
Negative display, agree with you big thumb down.
I've handled both negative and positive.
Positive display all the way!
Bro your video is so long! It makes us 🥱
Put it on before you go to bed.
All Gshock straps are carbon reinforced and will never tear.
Who told you ?

Gshock straps are tough but I think only carbon reinforced straps are carbon reinforced. As an example look at the GW-S5600U.

HEY!! I'M THE 113th "LIKE"!!!!
Nice! 👍 Does the number 113 have significance for you?
@@JimKinkade 🤣No, I'm just goofin' around. I do like the watch though. I've had a GW7900 (blackout version) for about 4 or 5 years now, so when I look @ GSHOCKs, I'm also looking for Multi-band 6 and solar features. This is why I've come to despise automatics. Automatics are expensive, but that's about all I can say about 'em. They're more expensive, and less accurate.
@@jebstuart3 yea, you wear a watch to be on time. And with the multiband 6 you never have to worry.

You should take 3 points off for the reflection issue and the bad legibility!! Love the watch but now i don't want to buy it.. a tool watch should have good legibility!! Disappointed.. i was going to buy it but thank god i watched some review videos ... oh and it pulls hair ..🤦🏽♂️
I just got used to the legibility issues after a while. The durability makes up for it.
