The Ancient Teachings Of Bhakti Yoga

  • The Sanskrit word bhakti is derived from the root bhaj, which means "to revere," "to share," "to partake," and "to worship." Primarily meaning devotion, it encompasses a range of meanings, such as attachment to love, faith, and spiritual knowledge. Bhakti is both a process and the result of the union between the bhakt (the worshipper) and the Bhagwan (the worshipped). As a process, bhakti is complete subservience to the divine will, and as an outcome, it is an end in itself. The purpose of devotion is neither wish fulfillment nor any higher purpose such as liberation or salvation; it is a simple concept of unconditional love towards the object of devotion, which may be a theistic God, an impersonal god, a living being, or even a thought or emotion.
This love knows no expectations, fears, or rivals. It expects nothing in return and is purely unconditional. The sole purpose of loving is to immerse oneself in an unending stream of divine love. Love does not emerge out of fear; one does not love in order to avoid hell, but rather in the face of love, concepts of heaven, hell, sin, karma, and liberation are all transcended. One becomes passive in their actions as there is complete surrender towards the beloved; all actions are guided by intense love. Love of Bhakti has no rival. A person who is truly in love will see the object of their love as the highest ideal. It may be that in many cases human love is misdirected and misplaced; however, to the person who loves, the thing they love is always their highest ideal.
The ancient treatise on Bhakti- the Narada Bhakti sutra explains the essence of Bhakti in its opening lines-
It is of the nature of the highest love for this oneAnd of the nature of the immortal blissOn attaining which a man becomes perfect immortal and satisfied forever. On gaining which one wants nothing, laments over nothing, hates nothing, delights in nothing, and is never enthusiastic in anything earthly.Experiencing which one becomes exhilarated beyond self control, stands perfectly still, and revels in the self. [2-6]
The notion of love is central to the idea of Bhakti. This love is an emotional, intense, and passionate longing for the beloved, not limited to the realm of physical or sexual desire. It involves an intense contemplation such that the lover and beloved seem to become one. There is an annihilation of separateness - a dissolution of the distinction between "me" and "not-me." Unless the union is with the entirety of creation, the distinction will persist. Hence, in Bhakti, the beloved is the Supreme itself - the one who is both creator and creation. The identification of self with the Supreme occurs, leading to complete fulfillment, satisfaction, desirelessness, and eternal bliss.

Most people have lost the ability to understand how to love unconditionally. Many are raised in godless conditions and are given no love from their parents. This breeds anger deep within them, and that anger is what forces them toward conditional love. How will we truly open their eyes to see the reality of their ways if they do not wish to open their eyes? It becomes increasingly relevant to be a "good person" in today's world. However, I find that, in retrospect, more people become jaded. I often feel as if trying to help others does nothing but brings pain upon myself. The sadness I feel for the lost who can't see the true God hurts me. I will probably take my life at some point, but for now, I continue to try and help anyone who is lost, regardless of their insults and apprehensions. Life is a vicious cycle, and losing my daughter has opened my eyes to all the world's sufferings; it's all I can see now. People are hurting, in pain, and lying to those in their lives. No one truly understands the pain of another because they are so caught up in their own pain. They have been conditioned this way. When will the cycle end? When will we become one again and understand what love is truly about?

Try to stay strong my friend. I don't know why such terrible things happen. It sounds like you are a good person, because a lot of people could care less about others. I'm sorry to hear that about your daughter. I do believe that you will see her again one day. You are here for a purpose and it might not make sense right now but I'm sure it will one day and I know that you have people who love you. Sometimes you have to heal yourself and not worry about others for a while. I'm really sorry for your loss. Please take care. 🙏

Sorry for your loss Austin. Life is a vicious cycle and the people just seem to make it worse by the second. Bhakti without Gyan results in dualistic fanaticism. It is important to remember that the goal is to realize one’s own Atma. Jesus said “The kingdom of heaven is within” The Bhagavat purana is clear that Gyan and Bhakti are the two wings of the bird. They are both needed.

@@MrCw64Not true, you need some knowledge and wisdom even to write this message, it is not by devotion only that you live your life. All humans have a heart and a mind and both are needed to live a balanced life. Jnana means to use your heart and mind to search out the truth as it is. You will need to verify that truth by your own Atma. If you take someone else’s word for it, then it will remain someone else’s knowledge and will not satisfy you.

@@MrCw64 We find Shri Krishna himself saying in the Gita that for one with devotion, he gives 'Brahmna jnyanam' in the end, which is liberating. It is even clearly stated in the Bhagavata Purana (as you're talking about Gopis here), that he imparted Divine wisdom to them. There are multiple occasions throughout the Mahabharata, including Krishna - Arjuna samvada in the battlefield - The Bhagavad Gita where wisdom is given much importance by Shri Krishna himself.

You describe in essence what the Platonist philosophers call the Erotic ascent. The ascent begins with desiring with Love (Eros) the beauty of a particular sensible body. Second, the lover recognizes the beauty shared by all bodies. Third, the lover recognizes and desires the beauty of soul and of the sciences. The ultimate object of Love (Eros) is the Form of Beauty itself, which is the very face of God.

    • @francoenrico1258

I agree, and I would say that the face of God, at least one aspect, is nature itself. Therefore the story in the beginning of this video could be seen that the man was indeed in devotion to God.
