    U both look like fantastic people to be with! So down to earth and humble. I’m in my mid 20s, and surrounded by very successful “friends” that boast about their fancy house and cars. Good to have found u guys on RUclips so I feel less alone about the hard work that comes with buying a house.

    Your video gave me so much encouragement! I had just applied and am lucky enough to get a ballot number. Though it takes 5 years for the BTO i do worry about financial wise like down payment and stuff during this pandemic period as well.

    Thanks for the great video, really appreciate you both sharing your experiences and even giving us the financial info that most ppl won't share. I'd like to hear from you guys on what you wish you knew before u got your house or before renovating/furnishing and what things would you change if you could go back in time. Looking forward to more videos, take care!! :)

    • @hillaryarieltan
      @hillaryarieltan  4 года назад +1

      no problem!! ☺️ hmm i think we more or less managed to find out the info we needed when it came to getting the house and renovating/furnishing. if we could go back in time, i think we would have spent more time furniture hunting at warehouse sales! i feel like because of the covid situation, we were a bit taken aback and we didn’t have that much time and headspace to really hunt for the best deals for furniture. that’s one! and another is, we might have gotten a kitchen hood HAHA, we didn’t know how much we would enjoy cooking our own food so we didn’t install one 😂

    Hello, thanks for sharing your experiences and tips/advise!
    Would like to know more about the cost for flooring/tiles itself as I heard this is commonly the part that cost the most for renovations. Thank you and have a blessed marriage!

    (I haven’t watch finish) I’m wondering, how did u deal with finances between you and your partner? The guy paying more seems to be the social “norm”. What if the girl has more income and savings? How to split big ticket items, daily expenses and bills? What if someone wants to buy something a bit expensive sometimes?

    • @hillaryarieltan
      @hillaryarieltan  4 года назад +2

      hmmm the both of us don’t have very strong opinions about the guy having to pay more and we are both very transparent with how we manage our individual finances. so.... we basically pooled together all that we had for all the expenses, it’s the same for all our bills and daily expenses now too. i think the idea of the guy having to pay more probably comes from a guy’s desire to provide for the family, which is a wonderful desire and nth wrong with that! but for us, i think we recognized that for my husband to provide for our family, it doesn’t necessarily have to come in the form of finances. he can provide emotional support, provide by serving in the house, doing chores, provide by guiding us as a couple in making decisions, and so much more! which is why i think, we aren’t as particular whether he pays more or i pay more, so long as we as a couple are able to provide for ourselves and our future family.
      if one of us wants to buy sth expensive, we’d discuss and come to an agreement as to whether or not it would be wise to make the purchase, or maybe we should purchase it at a later time, etc. so far i think we’ve been quite agreeable, likely also because we share similar values about money :~) and i’m very thankful for that!

    • @happyleaf9635
      @happyleaf9635 4 года назад +2

      hillary ariel Hey thanks for sharing! For my case, my income and savings are much more than my husband. Sometimes I don’t feel so good paying more, even tho most of the time is 50-50. Most of my friends and relatives have husbands that pays for 80-100% of the expenses and bills (they feel that the guy should, or else why marry). Good to hear your selfless mindset! Makes me feel less alone haha. I know couples should not be so particular and calculative about who contributed more, but sometimes I just can’t help it but to feel envious of others!

    • @hillaryarieltan

      ah i see. wah thanks for sharing so honestly!! things that many struggle with but are probably too awkward to say 😅 well, social norms will always be there but i guess we don’t necessarily have to follow them if we know that there are better/more loving ways to work through these things. and we’re all just trying to figure out what it means to be loving in our relationships :~) i’m so glad that you are standing up for what you believe in, even though they might not be the norm and even though it can be difficult at times. all the best girl! ❤️

    What is most important is your relationship and starting your lives together in a sound financial position. Keep things real , make moments count and stay grounded.
    You have a lovely cosy home , tasteful and warm.

    Why did y’all ROF when y’all knew financing the house (and the wedding together) will potentially become an issue?

    • @hillaryarieltan
      @hillaryarieltan  4 года назад +6

      hello, thanks for the question!! 😊 i think in weighing the options, both of us decided that we wanted to prioritize being able to live together/having our own space after getting married because we felt that it would allow us to grow and deepen our relationship as a married couple in those initial months to years of our marriage. both our parents’ homes weren’t able to accommodate us if one of us moved in to live with the other family. so in the end, we agreed that we would rather have our own home and start with just the essentials, doesn’t have to be well furnished, instead of renting short term while waiting for a bto proj to be done. also, our wedding was relatively low cost because we initially planned for just a simple church wedding, no banquet! so the cost was still manageable, assuming that we kept our home minimally furnished for the first year or so. but eventually, when our wedding got cancelled we got the extra cash to spend on our home. hope this answers the question!! tried to summarize our thought process as much as i could :’)

      my husband just saw this comment and wanted to add on :~) it was something that we had prayed about at that time, and though we knew we might not have had enough, we decided to go ahead with the ROF attempt and trust that God would provide the finances we need. and true enough, in interesting ways, He did!
